labeled a threat to brazil by the incoming president will look at the battle with people. who were spying for displaced syrians now there's a call for help for thousands affected by flooding. so that four people have been killed in election related violence in bangladesh in the southeastern city of chittagong security is on high alert as people cast their votes for a new parliament election campaign has seen violence between supporters of the government and the opposition the prime minister who's aiming to win a fourth term has been criticized for cracking down on the opposition in the lead up to polling day let's go straight to charles stratford a correspondent who's in dhaka and charles a couple of hours out from polls closing and troubling reports emerging of violence . that's right now. confirm now that
3:01 pm
four people have. reportedly been killed two inches are gone and the other two in a district called camilla both these areas are known to be strongholds for the opposition with respect to where we are here at this polling station in dakar the situation here is being has been calm this morning but again we're in reports from some of the people that we've spoken to here most notably a group of one of the scribes this polling agents representing the b.n.p. the banker nationalities party the opposition party here now agents polling agents from all parties to come to polling stations on voting day and they're here to monitor the process and crucially to witness the counting of the votes now this b.n.p. this opposition polling agent told us that he and his colleagues another thirteen men had their identification papers taken away from them and what he described is
3:02 pm
what manhandled away from the scene they weren't allowed to enter the polling station i've spoken to also representatives here from the election commission that were very nervous about going on camera they can confirm that they are hearing similar reports from voting stations polling stations around the city so as we've been reporting. this election a lot of violence certainly the opposition saying that at least ten thousand six hundred of their supporters were arrested be detained in the build up to the election. a number of people killed as well of course the ruling party here very keen to point out that they've lost supporters as well killed in this violence they say that at least six of their supporters were killed by what they describe as oppositions thugs. and they're very keen to say what they believe is a free and fair election here and they say that these figures that are being banded out by the opposition are hugely exaggerated but of course the fear is certainly
3:03 pm
amongst opposition supporters here is that this kind of level of intimidation or fear is going to keep people away from the polls today and as you say we are two hours away from the polls closing it's quiet here at the moment it's lunchtime we do expect more people to come in cannes their ballots in the coming couple of hours but what about the. it's fair to say is not of the government has done pretty well in certain areas. yes certainly with respect to the economy the government has been commended by the world bank for example for quite impressive growth figures in recent years at least six percent we know that there are huge infrastructure projects that are ongoing here that are being built including for example the hydro. nuclear power station there is a great expansion of these economic zones as well a lot of emphasis put on the success of the manufacturing the clothing
3:04 pm
manufacturing industry here that is contributing billions to the economy the opposition say that it's not really filtering down to every day people positions say that they accuse the government of spinning off vast amounts of money in corruption cases from some of the. the investment being put forward by the chinese and the indians for example the government is also being commended for the way it's handled the refugee crisis seven hundred thousand or so range of refugees displaced across the border from myanmar last year was described as the largest refugee crisis in the world at the time now residing here in bangladesh the current prime minister has government commended for that but i think when you speak to the people on the ground generally that you don't get a sense of fear and intimidation you get a sense that they have had enough of the awami league and its government here.
3:05 pm
and they talk about what they describe as a battle between what is described as the to make remarks and politics of this country shake a scene and who is. terms already and her opposition leader who was jailed in february that is in jail the moment serving. a number of years for corruption cases who is also the the wife of a former leader of this country and who herself. to terms representing if you like jailed the opposition a lot of people will say it is time for major change and they are complaining that there aren't the necessary political platforms to voice their concerns and get the kind of things done that they want done in this country in the future so it's a very complicated situation here. politics is often described in bangladesh since one nine hundred seventy one the independence of this country as flip flopping
3:06 pm
between the beginnings of democracy and the military dictatorship we'll just see the end of the day or in the weeks ahead just how much of a free and fair election has been held here today. thanks very much and david time being a chance for us there in dhaka well polls are open in the democratic republic of congo in the long awaited presidential election there the congolese are choosing who will succeed joseph kabila has been in power for seventeen years about one point three million people from three districts been excluded from voting in a decision that's caused protests in the lead up to the whole. my only concern is that we have this every day. and for the maid to be grown. up for the space and clear and the world doesn't. want to see the creepy things and they don't believe that this isn't the place because of us.
3:07 pm
but. shouldn't. and the wisdom to be. that's josie could be let's go straight to our correspondents a polling booth in kinshasa joins it completely the outgoing president saying the elections are free and fair is that the view that you're hearing. well here right now people proceeded with voting the day of polling began with renshaw rain but that didn't put some people off people very keen to vote the rain stopped just a short while ago people now walking through the muddy streets coming up more and more coming line up vote you're asking about whether people see it free and fair some opinion polls about that suggested that about half were just over half of congolese people don't trust the electoral commission and that trust has been further undermine when the electoral commission announced that people couldn't vote
3:08 pm
in three parts of the country all of them opposition stronghold of the candidate martin. the polling began in the eastern city of beni activists there where there is no voting taking place set up their own polling stations they made their own people as the papers and hundreds of people have lined up to vote in protest they don't have ballot boxes that using plastic sacks instead people there are objects strong because being excluded the reason the electoral commission gave were in a bolo outbreak conflict people that don't believe it they think they've been excluded because they support the opposition and that this was a tactic by the electoral commission to try and reduce the vote count. for the opposition candidate mark in fact that's why they're lining up today to vote in protest mark a real big change obviously ahead for d.r. see how hopeful are we of a peaceful transition. we're still waiting to see the opinion polls that ask people how they react is the ruling party's candidate
3:09 pm
was announced the winner about half of the respondents said they disputed about half the respondents said they'd take to the streets there is a lot of skepticism about the ruling party and about the electoral commission but in the last week for so opposition candidates diverge for calm of course they don't want to risk being accused of violence or of turning a poll of violence as the results are counted in the days ahead and when the results are announced waiting to see how people react now have the already been in the last couple of days unrest some of those eastern cities that are being excluded from the polls opposition supporters protested police tried to break it up with live gunfire and tear gas some government buildings was burned so if people feel that cheated out of a fair result and not given a credible election possible we'll see more of that kind of unrest in some parts of the country are marcom thanks very much indeed that's picture from kinshasa marking
