on those tropical storm makes landfall. of widespread flooding and landslides. the u.s. from some protests against syria as the trump of ministration prepares to withdraw its troops plus. you can see the game is only played by older generation the younger ones have different tools to play with. in iraq a board game five thousand years old struggles to survive in this age of social media. welcome to the program the u.s. government's partial shutdown now begins its fourteenth day in the deadlock of a funding for president trumps border wall appears far from over well late on thursday the new u.s. house of representatives now controlled by the democrats passed a package of bills aimed at bringing an end to the shutdown but it's likely to be blocked by the republican majority senate and the president because it does not
1:02 pm
include funding for a border wall with mexico well trump renewed his demand for the barrier saying it would stop thousands of what he called criminals from coming in. you can go to a barrier you can go to whatever you want but essentially we need protection in our country we're going to make it good to people of our country want it i have never had so much support as i have in the last week over my stance for border security for border control and for frankly the wall or the barrier rolls in jordan has more now from washington d.c. do you solemnly swear it's a day of firsts for the one hundred sixteenth u.s. congress do you solemnly swear that you knew faces and some familiar ones being sworn into office and then getting down to work. democrat nancy pelosi still the first and only woman to serve as house speaker returns for
1:03 pm
a second time back to play younger more diverse and more liberal legislators who want reforms in health care the economy and immigration in the movie but pelosi also has to temper colleagues desire to investigate and perhaps impeach president donald trump but first ending the federal government shutdown democrats will be offering the senate republican appropriations legislation to reopen government later today. we will do so. or do so to meet the needs of the american people to protect our borders and to respect our workers that first move likely is going nowhere the senate majority leader explains why the senate will not take up any proposal that does not have a real chance of passing the schreiber and. you know during a presidential shouldn't your in other words president donald trump says he will
1:04 pm
reject any short term budget that doesn't include five billion dollars to build a wall between mexico and the u.s. something democrats oppose earlier on thursday trump blamed the democrats for the impasse quote the shutdown is only because of the two thousand and twenty presidential election the democrats know they can't win based on all the achievements of trump so they are going all out on the desperately needed wall and border security and presidential harassment for them strictly politics analysts say this does not bode well for the eight hundred thousand federal employees who aren't getting paid and for the millions at risk of not getting emergency food aid health care or other services provided by the federal government we don't just have divided government the president of one party and the house of representatives of another party but we also have divided congress where the house and senate are controlled by different parties so that's a relatively unusual set of circumstances that makes it even more complicated for
1:05 pm
us to. for anyone to try to negotiate and find common ground on a prickly issues so far republicans and democrats say no reason to compromise because they both think they're right neither party has paid a political price because of the shutdown and that's how this is become the first drama of the new session of the u.s. congress rosalind wharton al-jazeera capitol hill well let's bring in ross feingold he's an asia political risk on a list and joins us via skype now from the taiwanese capital taipei it's been two weeks now since the u.s. government shutdown began how is it affecting already nervous global markets i mean investors seem unsure which way to turn. well part of this period did overlap with the christmas new year holiday so whether it's global markets foreign governments companies looking to do business in the united states and they need to work with us government agencies haven't felt the full brunt of the shutdown yet but now that
1:06 pm
people have returned for the new year holiday the longer this goes on and that the two parties cannot reach an agreement that the president will sign of course if there's going to be increasing concern with with investors as well as global markets yeah we know the dollar has been slowly sliding downward since at least october last year there are of course many reasons for this like the fed rate hikes that the trade war with china etc but how do they turn this thing around well ultimately the party leaders who were just discussed to report mcconnell and below sleep are going to need to reach an agreement that they know the president will sign clearly this is going to involve a larger purpose for border security whether it's a wall or a barrier we see the administration is showing some flexibility but the democrats are going to have to move a little bit and the republicans might have to reduce some of their expectations but there's going to be needs to be some latitude on both sides i think more latitude is needs to be shown from the democrats if they are going to get the president to sign something. on in terms of the border the bigger picture we know
1:07 pm
a u.s. delegation is visiting beijing next week to resume talks with china of a terrace the reality though is that these tires have eaten into corporate profits that have contributed to stock market decline so is this game of brinkmanship lotzen last well into twenty nineteen do you think. well the business community wants a deal but they want a deal that also achieve some of the goals which lead to this situation and that includes market access in china and greater protection for intellectual property the chinese are likely to are for things in that regard but whether they are in forcible whether it's different from previous commitments that the united states government feels china has not upheld remains to be seen so for the trade issues the ball is very much in china's court to offer something i think we should expect they are going to make significant offers to the visiting u.s. delegation next week the business community again they're eager for a deal they're eager for access to the markets they are eager for some stability
1:08 pm
but whether it's a deal that addresses their concerns and one that the trump administration can accept that really is up to china just a final thought from you before you go i mean investors tend to seek sanctuary in the dollar during times of market instability but with a growing thea's over a slowing economy and worries about china that you've just talked about is the dollar is still a safe bet it should be as obvious they reach a budget agreement which we should remain optimistic that they will near term there could be some kind of deal with china so there's just as many reasons to be optimistic on that from going into twenty nineteen and there are reasons to be pessimistic about the next few weeks are going to tell us that's going to go over the medium term or out into the first half of this year so we should be optimistic i would say on those two main issues the trade disputes with china as well as the budget and that might help investors regain their confidence in the united states market and then and the slide in the dollar ruslan go thank you very much for talking to al jazeera. storm public has made landfall in southern thailand bringing
1:09 pm
heavy rain and winds to over twelve provinces poets and schools have closed as forecasters are predicting waves up to fall. as of people have been taken to shelters set up by the government of florence and he joins us live now from the on in the coastal move province and now that storm public has made landfall just bring us up to date on what's happening on the ground well. yes well time for a tropical storm made landfall as about twelve forty five in the tongue right specifically in district. initially for cost the eye of the storm was also initially for cost to pass through the i dunno where we are now it's a hundred and fifty kilometers north of the camera that has since changed it was still feeling the effects of the storm it hasn't stopped raining all day the waves extremely powerful and strong much stronger than is normal that coming much much
1:10 pm
further ashore people have been told to stay out of the water boats and ferry services flights have been suspended in council for the rest of friday but it really is. the main focus of attention because this is where this is the area that's bearing the brunt of tropical storm now according to time disaster. thousands of people have been evacuated not just enough but also in other southern provinces schools as you mentioned have been closed for the day some of these buildings have been turned into floods shelters people have also stocked up on food water and petrol supplies in case they are cut off by floods over the past few days a week asian officials also gave orders for reservoirs some reservoirs in the southern provinces to start releasing water this is so that these reservoirs can take in additional rainfall by decreasing the potential for flash floods and it's also the end of the oil and gas industry that's been affected the energy ministry
1:11 pm
says more than. two thousand workers have been evacuated from offshore oil rigs as a precautionary measure torrens we know that thailand is a big tourist hot spot how is the industry lucky to be affected do you think. this time this this weather pattern is not likely to last for very long in fact for costas are expecting this storm because it made landfall a couple of hours earlier than expected it should cost the whole cost of the southern provinces of thai then hopefully by saturday afternoon or early to say just before what was initially for cost now is still going to dump heavy amounts of rainfall so that is still a threat of not just severe flooding but also landslides and mudslides but authorities say they are prepared for the situation they've already ready to back to a ship that just they've got a bomb system in place it just means that some tories will have just stick out on
1:12 pm
their own waited out on saturday and friday because flights and ferries that this happened suspended which means there's no way off the island there's no way to get off i'm not calling sea tama as well but if they stay put then they should be saying now as i said this weather system is not expected to last seven shouldn't have a prolonged effect on the tourism industry in southern thailand all right so florence maybe then close some of florence thank you well for a closer look at what to expect in thailand let's cross now to our meteorologist ivan carbon how how bad is this likely to get well as florence said we made landfall just about four hours ago the storm is going to weaken now that it's on land from a tropical storm to possibly a weak tropical storm or even a tropical depression so let's put the satellite image into motion for you you can see the clouds affecting not only most of southern thailand but also into myanmar as well this is what we're looking at right now in terms of the speed when it made landfall we're talking that the storm has sustained winds of seventy five. as for
1:13 pm
our making a speed of eighteen kilometers to the northwest it's going to continue making its way towards northwest across that very narrow strip of thailand right there and into the southern tip of min mar as well so we're going to still see over the next twelve to fifteen hours as across into thailand we're going to see quite a bit of heavy rain across this area we've already seen in one location about one hundred ninety nine millimeters of rain falling just in the last twenty four hours so the amount of rain coming out of the storm is still quite impressive as we go towards saturday the storm is going to enter on to the other side into the adamancy so we're going to watch net and then really still continue to bring a lot of heavy rainfall then continue to make its way into the bay of bengal even the end of a nicobar islands could be seen as very heavy rain into this area as we enter into sunday as well as into monday so in terms of what we're going to be seeing left in terms of the rain well still very heavy rain across much of that area we do think there's a potential to see as much as another two hundred fifty millimeters on top of what
1:14 pm
we've already seen so that means the flash flooding the mudslides and landslides are still going to be a big problem back here. all right kevin thank you very much lots more still to come here on the news hour including going nowhere saddam's president rejects coals by protesters to step down and a new cancer texan device that could save thousands of lives plus. find out why this n.b.a. star's been branded a traitor far will be here with more later in the program. now reports say eleven people from the same family have been killed in airstrikes by the u.s. led coalition that's been fighting eisel in syria local sources say the attack happened at the village of that's in the darrow's or province it's close to iraq's border and is an area controlled by ice so it comes as the joint investigation by

uptick in the number of aerial bombardment the u.s. led coalition has been cutting out against places which are believed to be a hideout for around months the fighters have largely been hiding according to officials in villages on the banks of the river euphrates and so far most of the bottom and have been hitting the villages of hygiene and shot and they are people who fled but there are those who couldn't. who are paying the price of course the u.s. forces in iraq time they want to get us much of the tasco tomba completed before the withdrawal of the u.s. troops happens thank you now the u.s. television network c.b.s. has refused a request by egypt to stop the broadcast of an interview with president. in the
1:18 pm
interview with counterfeit show sixty minutes c c says the egyptian army is working alongside israel against isis fighters in north sinai it also denies that egypt is holding tens of thousands of political prisoners. so when we don't have the political prisoners and war prisoners of opinion we are trying to stand against extremists will impose their ideology on the people the now they are subject to military trial only one hundred may take years but we have to follow the law and condemned it and cannot remember mr president the organization human rights watch says that there are sixty thousand political prisoners that you're holding today as we sit here and a lot of them need i don't know where they got that figure in but i said there are no political prisoners in egypt and lebanon says that whenever there is a minority trying to impose their extremist ideology we have to intervene regardless of their numbers or despite cc's denial rights groups say egypt's jails are filled with political dissidents human rights watch says political presidents
1:19 pm
are routinely subjected to torture and rape while in detention the group also says hundreds of civilians are being sent to military trials for political dissent egypt's most notable political prisoner is former president mohamed morsy it was overthrown by sisi and a twenty thirteen military coup and some of them to me is al jazeera journalist mahmud hussein has been under house arrest in egypt he was detained while on holiday in cairo an accused of spreading false news but has never been formally charged sainz imprisonment has been repeatedly extended despite international calls for his release well as professor of law at rutgers university she says egypt's courts are being politicized. the problem is that the judiciary there's a lot of questions whether it has been politicized and whether there is pressure on some of the judges to convict there's also serious concerns with the evidentiary process where defendants are not given the opportunity to bring forth the evidence
1:20 pm
and even defense counsel got on the record in egypt say i haven't had a chance to defend my client so the process itself has many flaws and that's been documented so but but that's despite the fact that's the second order issue the issue is why are they being indicted in the first place and i just want to know that you know the vast majority of these. detainees are accused of being associated with the muslim brotherhood and what's problematic about that is that this work was criminalized after the president mohamed morsy who was democratically elected was deposed and ultimately in a military coup arrived a kurd and then all of its members who were very open politically who participated in nonviolent political activity became criminalized all of a sudden and if you were even accused of being a member you were automatically arrested and detained so egypt has quite a different regime has created quite of a human rights catastrophe with these tens of thousands of people and some of whom

are also secularists and human rights activists who have nothing to do with the muslim brotherhood u.s. prosecutors and the turkish officials in ankara to discuss the possible extradition of the man turkey accused of plotting to overthrow the government which would have gotten is regarded by the fall of us as a spiritual leader of these billions of millions of supporters in turkey and his movement operates a network of schools around the world was once an ally of the turkish president of typo to one but now he's considered an enemy of the states with his movement branded a terrorist organization or one says goons followers infiltrated turkey's institutions effectively operating a powerless state uses to justify a purge of the on. in the civil service otoh it also says good and orchestrate the failed coup in twenty sixteen but he denies any involvement goons moved in the u.s. since one thousand nine hundred ninety is supposed to say he's there for health reasons but others say it's to avoid prosecution in. what matthew bryza seen

a fellow at the atlantic council and a former white house official he says u.s. president donald trump has become more open to the idea of extradition the whole move the whole atmosphere around this issue in terms of relations between the turkish and u.s. governments has softened as recently as late august and early september the turkish side was simply furious with the u.s. side for not having agreed to the extradition request the u.s. side and president trump were putting pressure on turkey for the release of that american pastor andrew bronson so that the sides were talking past each other and then in recent weeks president trump came out and said you know i'd like to see the extradition happen in the justice department should work on it so now it appears based on press reports here that turkey has provided some debt some perhaps some e-mails and some other data that shows that there may indeed have been plotting between learn and his team in pennsylvania and the coup plotters for the extradition to happen there needs to be sufficient convincing evidence to convince
1:23 pm
a judge in a u.s. court of law regardless of what president trump thinks but that also justice department officials are human beings and if the official line out of the white house had been we want to put maximum pressure on turkey as had been the case last summer well maybe they wouldn't put this extradition case at the top of the agenda now they appear to be putting it at the top of the agenda. now the un's human rights office says a trial held in saudi arabia into the murder of the journalist is not enough on thursday saudi media reported eleven suspects had appeared in court for the very first time state prosecutors are seeking the death penalty for five of the defendants but no names have been released the u.n. wants an independent probe with international involvement and on wednesday the streaming service netflix caved in to saudi arabia's request to take down a standup comedy episode that criticized it sarah curran has an update on that story. american comedian has done man has at the center of all of this has since
