so to meet the needs of the american people to protect our borders and to respect our workers that first move likely is going nowhere the senate majority leader explains why the senate will lock up any proposal that does not have a real chance of passing the scheiber and. yes a presidential should mature in other words president donald trump says he will reject any short term budget that doesn't include five billion dollars to build a wall between mexico and the u.s. something democrats oppose earlier on thursday trump blamed the democrats for the impasse quote the shutdown is only because of the two thousand and twenty presidential election the democrats know they can't win based on all the achievements of trump so they are going all out on the desperately needed wall and border security and presidential harassment for them strictly politics analysts say

this does not bode well for the eight hundred thousand federal employees who aren't getting paid and for the millions of risk of not getting emergency food aid health care or other services provided by the federal government we don't just have divided government the president of one party and the house of representatives of another party but we also have divided congress where the house and senate are controlled by different parties so that's a relatively unusual set of circumstances that makes it even more complicated for us to. for anyone to try to negotiate and find common ground on a prickly issues so far republicans and democrats say no reason to compromise because they both think they're right neither party has paid a political price because of the shutdown and that's how this is become the first drama of the new session of the u.s. congress rosalind's warton al-jazeera capitol hill committee helka joins us live

now in washington d.c. kimberly so what will consume less than about the package of measures voted in by the house to bring the shutdown to a close. yeah it has two parts the first would open up the major agencies and fund them until september thirtieth the other part of this package was a stopgap measure essentially it would provide short term funding for the part of homeland security and here's where the sticking point is dare because what was in this package passed by the democratic controlled house was not the five billion that president donald trump is looking for to fund his border wall and the southern border of the united states and mexico what does this mean moving forward this means that the president says i'm not going to sign it when it comes to my desk and that is necessary for it to become law which means that the u.s. senate is not taking up this measure because essentially it's dead on arrival so the president a late on thursday attended the white house briefing room showed up unexpectedly to defend his position saying that it's necessary to stop illegal migrants from

entering the united states. you can go to barrier you can go do whatever you want but essentially we need protection in our country we're going to make it good. for the people of our country want it i have never had so much support as i have in the list week over my stance for border security for border control and for frankly the war over the barrier president says and he is backed up by his vice president saying there is no deal unless there is a wall so essentially it's a game of brinkmanship now which it comes down to whichever side is going to blink first there is going to be a meeting a congressional leaders at the white house coming up in about two and a half hours it's unlikely where things stand right now that they'll be able to break this impasse and what does that mean for the eight hundred thousand federal workers who have been furloughed some of them are not receiving

a paycheck well this is now gone on two weeks that's one pay cycle they don't have a paycheck for the first time tough for some of them that are living paycheck to paycheck and that means that some private businesses restaurants banks for example stepping up to help those things are headed to breaking the history books if this goes on for one more week this what essentially be the longest government shutdown in american history so this is difficult for federal workers and at the same time a lot of frustration with members of congress putting a lot of pressure though now on republicans to try and resolve this given the fact that the house now controlled by democrats has shown good will in trying to pass these packages but so far they have been rejected by the republican controlled senate as well as the president republican donald trump can really thank you. now it's just been announced that the u.s. secretary of state will visit the go free gen next week might pump aoe will visit

independent investigation questioning the impartiality of the saudi court and also questioning possible involvement of the entire saudi system in the murder of jamal khashoggi the issue is quite simply in terms of international law the un any legislative body of the un the general assembly the security council can call give the secretary general a mandate to call for an independent investigation however it would appear that the un bodies are waiting for one of the member states to make that call to the security council or the general assembly to then pass on the mandate to the secretary general essentially looking for some kind of political cover waiting for direction from turkey or from saudi arabia any interested party to make this independent investigation possible at this stage it would appear to be a stalemate but it must be stressed that in terms of international law the u.n.

is behind this there's a lot of speculation in germany this morning as to who might be or might not be responsible for it but people are very impressed by the way this is being done and there are as i say lots of questions asked not that many facts and certainly the twitter account concerned seventeen thousand followers not anything at all since the twenty eighth of december closed this morning that element closed but certainly the investigation is very much open and although as you say angle americal confidential details have not been late very many details of very many of her colleagues have been and so as i say a great deal of questions being asked by federal sources right now now in iraq a five thousand year old boardgame is in danger of being forgotten damas a traditional game similar to checkers that's popular around the world but the iraq you version as. to survive in the digital era as in one com reports the simplicity of dhamma is fighting to grab the attention of young people growing up with video
