the truth crawls and this is the great military victory the crusades an arab perspective episode three unification and this time on the. this is al jazeera. america and this is the news hour from al-jazeera. in washington d.c. way are expecting a news conference from multiple players in the u.s. government shutdown the pictures from the white house where democrat leaders are expected and we're also waiting for a news conference from the president himself. we as you know have been pressing
9:01 pm
for justice in the shoji case for months now the u.n. human rights body calls for an independent investigation into the. thousands take shelter in thailand as tropical storm makes landfall bringing fears of widespread flooding and landslides. as you can see the game is only played by older generations the younger ones have different tools to play with. and an ancient iraqi board game struggles to survive in an age of digital me. so donald trump and congressional leaders have been meeting aps the white house this friday their meeting expected to wrap up shortly as they try to find some sort of resolution to end the partial government shutdown the masing is. to conclude in
9:02 pm
the next few minutes there was a step forward late on thursday though when newly empowered democrats in the house of representatives managed to pass a package of bills to reopen the government is duly next month that measure though is likely to hit a wall in the senate and president trump certain divvies habits anyway and for that very reason the senate leader mitch mcconnell is calling it all political theater in a waste of time remember it is now fourteen days since both republicans and democrats failed to reach an agreement over donald trump's five billion dollars demand for border wall so i would call it political theater not productive. so i've made it clear of several occasions let me say it again the senate will not take up any proposal that does not have a real chance of passing the schober and getting a presidential signature what we're asking the pres the republicans in the senate
9:03 pm
to do is to take yes for an answer we have sent are sending them back exactly word for word what they have passed so there's something very wrong with this picture it can't possibly be that the president is saying i will never sign but the republicans in the senate have written there something very negative about the role of government meeting the people's needs and doing so in a timely fashion the latest with kimberly how great is that the white house kimberly cameras reporters lining up pretty much everywhere at the moment talk us through what's going to happen. yeah the bottom line at the moment there's still talking they being the u.s. president and congressional leaders democrats and republicans but really all eyes on democratic leader nancy pelosi now the speaker of the house in control of the house of representatives who's on record as saying look there's going to be no wall
9:04 pm
donald trump is not consistent with american values and you continue demand for there to be a border wall funding in an effort to reopen the government well that's simply not going to happen for the republicans part we've heard from vice president mike pence that there is no deal unless there is funding for a wall so we have this confusing situation both sides saying no deal unless you yield to my demands what we've got right now is what some are starting to call the shutdown stalemate so we're watching very carefully to see what happens coming out of this meeting things have been a little unpredictable here at the white house the last twenty four hours we saw donald trump showing up unexpectedly in the white house briefing room on thursday something we've never seen before so we've got reporters staking out their cameras staking out there also rate outside the white house outside of the west wing and also in the rose garden what the latest is that we're hearing i was just inside the white house it appears that when they come out of this meeting we're expected to
9:05 pm
hear from congressional leaders and then we will hear from donald trump the feeling inside is that just as we saw on thursday donald trump likes to have the media focus around his narrative and he was the last word so that is the latest update we are expecting some comments coming out of these meetings with the congressional leaders apparently going first but no specific times been given just yet ok while we wait kimberly sort of conflict nor this headline in the washington post in the last couple of hours talking about pay rises for senior officials around ten thousand dollars that seems at a time when the government is shut down extraordinary timing no matter. yeah but at minimum the optics are horrendous what we've got going here is when the funding ran out for the government while the republicans were in control of the house of representatives what this allowed is for a free home pay raises for the vice president for cabinet secretaries political
9:06 pm
appointees especially the top administration officials in the trumpet ministration what this allowed is for that freeze to thaw and that means that they're now going to get outwards of ten thousand dollar raises the optics could not come at a worse time given the fact me but eight hundred thousand federal workers who are going without a paycheck we're now into the first pay cycle as the shutdown has reached into the fourteenth day and this could continue already this is the fourth longest government shutdown in u.s. history go another week and well over it now we're competing for the longest in u.s. history so this is important as both sides dig in not only are the top trump administration officials getting raises but ordinary federal workers are not able to pay their bills in some cases we've already seen private businesses like banks and rest are stepping up to try and help people get through this uncomfortable period it's certainly going to contribute to voting anger but also just general frustration
9:07 pm
with the government that just seems to be increasingly dysfunctional with each passing day and hour ok kimberly said time we'll talk to you again so no three when we hear from one of those news conferences meantime here's some thoughts from eric town who is a political analyst in washington and we spoke to earlier he told us the political blame game will only increase the longer the shutdown goes on. who wants to own a shutdown where you have more than eight hundred thousand americans going without work many of our national parks here in washington d.c. many of the museums are now closed so the smithsonian is not even open right now and so the president simply does not want to own this the markets are now being impacted as a result and so i think the president simply didn't understand the impact and the tentacles that a shutdown would have and so what you're seeing is the president trying as best he can to get this hot potato off as lap the quote the problem now is because the
9:08 pm
president on video called for this shutdown and own it now he's got a government by the rush limbaugh and ann coulter fear of the party and if he and if he backs down he has to worry about that that very fragile and diminishing base and will they continue to stand with them as his reelection campaign begins to heat up let's look more at how this partial u.s. government shutdown is having knock on effects beyond washington erick talked about it seems for example there the fact is this is one of the issues affecting stock markets as well as investors worry about the state of not just the u.s. but the global economy here's rob reynolds now with a look at how finance is a shaping up at the start of a new here. stock markets wildly. a bruising global trade war and slowing growth worldwide so what's in store for twenty nineteen veteran forecaster locke's mana truth and studies leading economic

indicators he says slow downs are part of capitalism upswings and downswings accelerations and liberations are inevitable that's part and parcel market oriented economy. but that cyclical slowdown is worse than fight policy decisions particularly the trumpet ministrations tariffs on foreign steel aluminum and a ray of good. made in china trump also rattled investors with unprecedented criticism of the federal reserve the nominally independent u.s. central bank it's really been a one two punch cycle slow down first then the trade sanctions trade war rhetoric whatever you want to call it and the question right now is are we ready or what is the next punch going to be in are we are we ready for it. in december general motors said it would close five plants and lay off thousands of workers in part due to soaring steel costs companies large and small are scaling

that policymakers make wise decisions and that the global economy doesn't tip into recession on the other hand the optimist who jumped off the higher state building you know what he said on the way down so far so good. so buckle up. good be one. washington. now the u.s. secretary of state will be visiting the gulf region next week. going to visit the united arab emirates saudi arabia among other countries from tuesday the u.s. state department. for an update on the investigation into jamal khashoggi killing
9:12 pm
in october he had said there was no direct evidence connecting saudi crown prince mohammed bin salman to that we'll talk more about this with rosalynn jordan in washington d.c. d.c. he's on capitol hill today and what else to expect from this trip because it's basically eight countries in eight days was it. eight countries eight days not much time for sleep a lot has been packed into the secretary's agenda here not only is he going to be putting pressure on. elevate its credibility about the story that it's been telling about the murder of the journalist jamal khashoggi it's also going to be putting pressure on all eight countries that he is visiting to was do more to try to withstand the influence of iran in their internal affairs the u.s. considers iran perhaps one of its top two or three foreign policy objectives and it feels that if by dealing this face to face being that they might be able to get
9:13 pm
a little further along in their ham pain to isolate iran on the global stage the secretary is also going to be holding a couple of strategic dialogues with officials in doha and officials in kuwait sitting and he is going to be looking at a number of other key issues that really have been on the us his foreign policy agenda for the past year especially the ongoing war in syria the ongoing war in afghanistan the ongoing war in yemen a lot to pack and a lot to discuss but whether their way to come up with anything concrete at the end of this eight day trip is really what remains to be seen ok do you think the gulf crisis the gulf diplomatic crisis will get a look in as well ross because that's something which seems to. lower on the agenda particularly in light of the khashoggi case. senior state department officials have told reporters that this will be on the agenda that the secretary believes that the
9:14 pm
u.s. government believes that the ongoing rift between qatar and its neighbors in the gulf is making it easier for iran to expand its influence around the region in ways that neither of those countries nor the united states would appreciate and so there is going to be an effort to have discussions with all of the members of the g.c.c. during pompei o stops but there's no assumption that any breakthrough is going to happen during the trip there's also the possibility of trying to once again schedule a g.c. summit here in the united states but again officials don't know how quickly that will come about it really depends on what comes out of the discussions during this upcoming trip ok thanks for the update rosalynn jordan in washington meanwhile the u.n. human rights office says a trial held in saudi arabia into the murder of jamal khashoggi is not enough on thursday saudi media reported eleven suspects that appeared in court for the first time state prosecutors seeking the death penalty for five of them but no names have
9:15 pm
been released the u.n. though is looking for an independent investigation with international involvement more from mike hanna he's at the united nations in new york. well the un making very clear that one independent international investigation into the murder of jamal khashoggi a spokesperson for the high commissioner for human rights insisting that it's impossible to adjudicate on the impartiality of the process under way in riyadh the trial there off eleven suspects in the murder beginning this week the spokes person had this to say we are not present in saudi arabia to be able to assess these trials and we can't give an assessment of the trials ourselves we as you know have been pressing for justice in the case for months now. and we've been calling for an investigation independent investigation with international involvement and this
9:16 pm
has not happened yet now while we are aware that a trial has taken place in saudi arabia this is not sufficient first of all and second of all we are against the imposition of the death penalty in all circumstances a number of human rights organizations have also cost out some of the legality or impartiality of that process in riyadh also calling for some kind of international independent investigation into the murder but the situation is that the u.n. is quite capable of michigan ating such an investigation by itself all it requires is one of the legislative bodies of the united nations the security council of the general assembly to give a mandate to the secretary general to start such an investigation however it would appear that un members are looking for some kind of political cover they want one of the interested parties in the situation to approach the security council or the general assembly and make such a request the interested parties turkey and saudi arabia that's unlikely it would
9:17 pm
appear that saudi arabia would make the request turkey has insisted that it does one some kind of independent international investigation headed by the united nations but as yet it has not made an official request to any of the united nations bodies. here's what's coming up for you on this news hour turkey pakistan and a controversial businessman with multinational interests why this visit by pakistan's prime minister to turkey comes at an important time also more protests against the government in sudan with the report coming up from cartoon sport the grand slam hopeful putting in some extra work at the start of a new tennessee's. tropical storm public is battering southern thailand after making landfall on friday a fisherman's been killed and others missing after their boat capsized in the

it is are going to be announced soon police in sudan to fire tear gas to disperse anti government demonstrators have gathered again after friday prayers protests as one present owner of a ship to step down there is anger of rising food prices and government corruption and at least nineteen people have died since the amorous started last fall from have a morgan in. once again it seems people coming out today to protest against president obama to be sure and demand that he step down and his twenty one year rule now would all thought of three weeks ago when people started complaining in the city of hadera about the rising price of bread and other living commodities they said that inflation which is about seventy percent which is at about seventy percent is quite high and very unbearable for many of them that quickly escalated into protests demanding that the government president obama to share has been very defiant since the protests started he said he was going to try to improve the economy and yesterday he spoke to civil servants saying that he's going to increase their salary so that living conditions become better for them but people have been saying that they've produced promises over and over again now let's step back and see what

three weeks of protests have done to sudan. educational institutes have been closed down social media platforms like twitter facebook and what have have been blocked by the government so that people cannot call for protest that is filled happening despite the government shutdown of social media so people are saying that they will continue to protest amnesty international says at least thirty seven people have been killed but the government is the beating that figure and says only nineteen have been killed and several have been injured in the protests but people have been very defiant they say they will continue to protest this if they will continue to demand that the president step down and the president says he's also going to be very determined to stay in power until elections in twenty twenty so it's not clear where this would end and how long it would go on for but what what is the fact is that president bashir has never had to face like the protests this long before he has faced protests during his rule yes but never for this long and he seems to be very confused about how to handle it because people have not given him much of an option besides stepping down something he said he's not going to do so this may be going on for a while before solutions are found if ever there is one the u.s.

television network c.b.s. has refused a request by egypt to stop the broadcast of an interview with president sisi in the interview with the current affairs shows sixty minutes see she says the egyptian army is working alongside israel against arsal fighters in northern sinai he also denies egypt is holding tens of thousands of political prisoners. so when we don't have a political prisoners and or prisoners of opinion we are trying to stand against extremists will impose their ideology on the people now they are subject to a fair trial one hundred may take years but we have to follow the law and. mr president the organization human rights watch says that there are sixty thousand political prisoners that you're holding today as we sit here and a lot of them need i don't know where they got that figure and i said there are no political prisoners in egypt residences but whenever there is a minority trying to impose their extremist ideology we have to intervene

regardless of their numbers despite these denial rights groups say egypt's jails are filled with political dissidents human rights watch says political prisoners are routinely subjected to torture and right plumbing detention the group also says hundreds of civilians are being sent to military trials for political dissent of course egypt's most notable political prisoner is the former president mohamed morsy overthrown by sisi in a two thousand and thirteen military. when we come back fighting colombia's drugs gangs is now more dangerous than ever so why are community leaders refusing to give up the war on drugs also hackers target political parties except one will tell you who wasn't touched in that. and scored an n.b.a. star who wasn't welcome at his latest game more than he likes.

hello again and welcome back we're here across the western part of the we see here pretty pretty much some very heavy rain and showers over the next few days as these storm systems are coming out of the mediterranean so look at your forecast map here on saturday plenty of snow across turkey down through syria we are going to expect to see an increase of rain as we go from saturday as well as into sunday temperatures are going to be dropping as well so for aleppo nine degrees there beirut a rainy day for you with a temperature of about fourteen degrees and also some clouds in the forecast for baghdad at about eighteen degrees there well that same weather system is also going to bring some cloudy conditions across parts of the arabian peninsula particularly up here towards the north not looking too bad here on saturday but as we go towards sunday we are going to be seeing an increase of clouds across much of that area we could be seeing an embedded rain shower but it's not going to be too heavy at times
9:30 pm
over here towards doha twenty four degrees for you there but down towards the lala it is going to be a nice day to high temperatures into the high twenty's and then very quickly as we make our way down here toward the southern part of africa a lot of clouds and rain particular up here towards the north we're going to be seeing durban with a rainy day for you at about twenty seven degrees and then as we go towards sunday the rain continues and also makes its way up towards johannesburg with attempt a few of about twenty seven degrees there. the arrival of refugees is debated in european parliament's. but the journey itself is little understood. to syrians document the route that has claimed so many lives searching for sanctuary to people in power on

congressional leaders are meeting at the white house they are trying to find some sort of resolution to end the partial government shutdown and the democrats in the u.s. house of reps the representatives have passed a package of bills though to reopen the government until early next month we are waiting for a live news conference from the white house. on pay as to seek an update on saudi arabia's investigation into the murder of jamal khashoggi next week during a trip to reality's good night day middle east tour coming up which will include visits to the united arab emirates egypt and qatar. and the un's human rights offices a trial held in saudi arabia and the murder of is not sufficient on thursday saudi media reported in levon suspects had appeared to court for the first time the u.n. though wants an independent investigation with international involvements. so let's return to our top story as we say there is this meeting at the white house between the president and congressional leaders been happening behind closed doors in the
9:33 pm
situation room within the white house we believe as we wait to hear from donald trump and nancy pelosi will speak to bill schneider in washington d.c. a public policy professor at george mason george mason university and a regular contributor here at al-jazeera nice to see you as always bill we are now fourteen days in tempe shutdown and i would like to know if you can see a way through this because everyone really does seem to be holding their line. well as long as they do that there isn't really any way to do this because the president has to sign any legislation that passes congress the house has passed a bill to end the shutdown it opens most of the government for the rest of the fiscal year until september actually only the homeland security department is given a shorter reprieve and the bill allows them to reopen but only for about a month the president has to sign anything that's passed and it has to get through the united states senate and the leader of the united the republican leader of the

united states senate says that he will not put anything on the floor for a vote that the president will not sign so we are at an impasse it's one thing to be at an impasse bill oh let's just hold on a moment bill because i believe if we go or not the policy is on our way out from the white house now she has held that meeting she's of course the highest ranking democrat now the speaker of the house let's have a listen to what she sense yes please good night and time. and to compensate. and never. ever tell you. that. this is the health of the american people paychecks are being held with help from people who serve the needs of the american people and our border security will

scheffer if you give not resolve this issue we are committed to keeping our borders state. that has always been our principle to honor the oath of office that we take to protect and defend our country and our constitution. we can do that best when government is open and it made that clear to the president. you know i basically same thing is what the leader of the speed. there said the bottom line is very simple we made a plea to the president once again. joe hold millions of americans hundreds of thousands of workers hostage open up the government and let's continue the discussions i pointed out to him for instance a call i got in my office this morning a fire dispatcher from upstate new york said it wife is pregnant signed a mortgage can't get the f.a.a. to approve it now f.h.a. to approve it because the government is closed this kind of situation is happening
9:36 pm
in millions of instances across the united states in one way or another so we told the president we needed the government open he resisted in fact he said he'd keep the government closed for a very long period of time months or even years. the discussion then just that we discussed a bunch of issues as the leader said that was somewhat contentious and we'll continue discussing of course but. it's very hard to see how progress will be made unless they open up the government. that you know are you know. at the moment meeting on their own when you have one we're watching. how do you define progress in a meeting when you have. an under the better understanding of each other's position
9:37 pm
when you eliminate some possibilities if that's a jazz fest long as we make some progress that's not too much of a very very very tightly wound. think that you're right that a lot of those are everywhere you're not your bank you know you do not. say new democrats nancy pelosi and chuck schumer speaking at the white house outside the white house off their meeting inside the white house. with president trump nancy pelosi called it a lengthy and contentious discussion chuck schumer said we made a plea to the president don't hold americans hostage open up the government and continued discussion of going back to bill schneider just now as we speak to him just before that started bill that sounded like a whole lot of nothing basically almost no progress made. that's exactly right and what she said that was most disturbing even chilling was that the president she
9:38 pm
reported the new house speaker reported the president said he's prepared to leave the government closed or at least partially closed for months even three years i mean this is truly incredible we've never had any situation like this in the united states what it means is that the president and congress are not doing their jobs and americans are going to start to get very very angry over it and this is what i want to throw out the already are yeah well that's the thing just before we went to nancy pelosi and chuck schumer i was going to ask you isn't it incredible that politics gets in the way of people the people who are supposed to be served by the fall decisions it is so obvious that they are the ones who are going to suffer here and yet there is this stubbornness on all sides to not get them back. that's right and not only the government workers are suffering but there are a lot of people who use government services and offices are closed people are here in washington where i am right now they plan these trips probably wouldn't for a long time they want to tour museums the museums are all closed there are vital
9:39 pm
public services that are needed and the government offices are closed i mean it is just incredible that the president at least is willing to leave the government shuttered or much of the government shuttered for what he said could be years that is incredible. bill schneider thanks for staying with us good to get your analysis after we heard there from. nancy pelosi and chuck schumer i'm going to check in with kimberly how could he get now our white house correspondents there on the other side of sixteen hundred pennsylvania avenue so it just incredible that there have been three meetings now we should point out i was with mccain least three of these big meetings the first one very much in public in front of the cameras and nothing has been achieved nothing's been achieved reporters as they were coming away from that stakeout that you played just a moment ago with nancy pelosi they were all shouting no deal no deal sensually what this is is we also had a report that the top republican in the senate mitch mcconnell left the white house
9:40 pm
and did not speak to reporters i think it's pretty fair to say that nancy pelosi summed up how that meeting went when she said contentious it doesn't appear that either side with able to come to an agreement of any form or fashion even laying the groundwork for a potential agreement well this is always been the sticking point about the funding for the border wall for donald trump it now appears that just reopening the government is also a sticking point as bill schneider pointed out some news coming out of that meeting that in fact from says he's prepared to keep the government closed for months even years until he gets the funding for the border wall so that he can keep a campaign promise democrats digging in their heels saying we're not even going to talk about border security until the government is open so i it appears that this sort of partial shutdown stalemate has only intensified and is this what it's actually about kimberly not just the wall itself those sensibly that's what we keep hearing about but the fact that donald trump has to show he's
9:41 pm
a fighter and he's and he holds his line and he won't be pushed around by this new democratic house. there's no question that that is part of this we saw donald trump trying to get the last word to you late yesterday when nancy pelosi was getting all kinds of attention becoming the speaker of the house he popped into the white house briefing room to kind of capture the narrative he likes to be the center of the narrative we expect that is about to happen once again we've had reporters and cameras assembling in the white house rose garden where we are told it's possible donald trump will come out and make some sort of statement so this is certainly in part about donald trump he needs to keep a campaign promise because remember in the sort of ongoing campaigning of a us presidential elections it seems as soon as one ends another begins we're already now focusing on two thousand and twenty and donald trump is thinking reelection but the other thing in all of this have to stick this into the
9:42 pm
discussions too and that is the fact that there hasn't been coppery hense of immigration reform in the united states for twenty years congress after congress after congress has failed to come up with some sort of modern immigration system so both sides agree there needs to be reform they disagree on how to do it and that is the stalemate that they're out right now ok thanks for now kimberly hopefully as you say we will hear from president trump himself a little later i want to go back to another of our top stories now the u.s. secretary of state who is making a trip to the middle east what's he up to well let's talk to joshua landis about it he's in norman oklahoma on skype director of the center for middle east studies at the university of oklahoma countries in eight days joshua all through the gulf going through allies. and countries which are feuding against each other as well what do you think my company can achieve with almost one country every day. well

this is a hand holding out this is really to reassure i think our allies that are foreign policy is not in shambles or not completely confused because after all president trump. announced that he was going to withdraw from syria very precipitously and this has shaken a lot of people particularly in the gulf the saudis and others who were hoping that the united states would remain there for the long haul to roll back iran shaken israel and of course turkey and the u.s. have a lot to talk about because turkey is now moving closer to the u.s. because of this change in policy and speaking of israel i think john bolton as well national security adviser is going there as well as us again what you say that reassuring yes we're still here don't worry about syria don't worry about iran yes absolutely we're going to continue to push against iran's malignant behavior as he calls it and and i'm sure he's going to say look at israel is in
9:44 pm
a much better position to date because of president trump it's two major enemies iraq and syria are devastated iran has new sanctions and is being constrained and the gulf countries are very friendly with israel today the u.s. is supplying israel with ever more arms and so israel is in a very good position a position that it has never been in before in the middle east is there anything in the middle east that isn't to do with iran at the moment and i say that more as a way that the united states would try to portray it's to pretty much anyone who doesn't that everything comes back to that to iran in a way. well it does i mean for many of the gulf state arabs it does the the u.s. is going to try to put a good face on this and president trump's desire to withdraw from syria say that it it changes a very small part of our policy but not the larger part which is to to
9:45 pm
constrain iran and that is still the heart of president trumps middle east policy so it's good talking to you just went on to thank you for your time pleasure. politicians from germany have been hit by hacking incidents but hackers targeted all the parties except for the far right i have to movement chancellor angela merkel is also said to have been affected but the government says its internal network is not hacked it released personal data including private e-mails mobile phone numbers and credit card details more dominant kane. we know that more than nine hundred politicians from almost every party in germany have been affected many of them from merkel's christian democrats or from her bavarian christian social union allies but it's not just politicians who've been affected here one interesting line it's being reported by several different agencies is that the form

a big impact on the stock market today and i do want people to remember that we've had a tremendous success despite the fact that i'm in the midst of negotiating incredible trade deals for a country that should have been negotiated many years ago by both parties to be honest but many years ago. we are doing very well in a negotiation with china we pretty much concluded our negotiation with canada with mexico we have done the deal and signed a deal with south korea which a lot of people said was not going to happen would be impossible it's a good deal it was a horrible deal it's a good deal i think a lot of this has to do with the fact though that already companies are moving back into our country that have left our country in some cases in some cases they're moving back because they want to be here but in many cases these are or mobile companies that have left and gone to other countries and now they're coming back to the unite.
