inspiring documentaries from impassioned filmmakers. nice documentaries to open your eyes on al-jazeera. new yorkers are very receptive to al-jazeera because it is such an international city they are very interested in that global perspective that al jazeera provides. this is al-jazeera. this is the news hour live from doha coming up in the next sixty minutes. war protests against sudan's president omar al bashir is he addresses a large gathering of supporters in the capital. the stars of five days of debate in

the u.k. parliament leading up to a crucial vote on the prime minister's breaks that deal with the e.u. . president u.s. president donald trump calls illegal immigration a humanitarian crisis the democrats accuse him of stoking fear. and from flexible t.v. screens to intelligence household devices we check out what's on offer at the consumer electronics show in las vegas and on peter stammered with the developments in the investigation into state sponsored drug use by russian athletes moscow says it's ready to hand over material from its anti doping agency that in more sports news coming up. an anti-government rally is underway in the sudanese capital khartoum keeping up the pressure on president to step down just a few hours. addressed his supporters in the city calling for unity and accusing
4:02 pm
foreign powers of stoking the unrest legislations have spread across sudan since mid december it began over the rising cost of food and fuel and government corruption. however remain defiant that you know. we are all together hand in hand joining forces to maintain stability however some are adopting foreign agendas being operated by outside forces to the sudan however we reiterate those who are seeking power they are welcome however there is only one route to grab power it is the ballot box it is only through transparent free elections and it's up to you the sudanese people to decide to have a morgue and joins us live now from khartoum and have always or bashir there at an earlier pro-government rally very keen to show the support that he still has yes lower he's been he's been very can his party has also been very keen to try to
4:03 pm
show that these two of the past three days of anti-government protests that has happened that started in december and it's been going on for three weeks means nothing and that he still has the borders and people backing him up until he runs for elections next year now he has spoken about the protests and he said that people have been the people who will be protesting have been infiltrated by what he described as foreign agents and he seems to believe that those people who are protesting do not have a legitimate reason and this is not the first time president bashir is saying that has been saying about for almost a week now he's spoken to people on the eve of independence of the countries it's the third independence anniversary in his book and again yesterday to the military in their open i reckon i'll state where protests started but basically he's trying to show that he still has support and that all the opposition and all the anti-government protests means nothing and he will still hold on to power until elections next year but the anti-government rallies continue to get underway you were at one earlier the protesters managing to keep up the momentum.
4:04 pm
yes they seem to be very eager and very keen to continue with their momentum we were very early we've seen people chanting slogans like downfall the downfall of the government that they want to regime change and they say that they're protesting peacefully they were protesting peacefully but they were not met with peaceful means that they have been tear gas fired to try to disperse protesters hundreds have been forced from their from their demonstrations the big gathered back again so it seems like they're very eager to keep on with the momentum and still president bashir steps down something he said he's not going to do so basically today has been a reflection of the state of the nation of sudan people on one side demanding that the president step down and his twenty one year rule and the president and his supporters and the other thing that they will mark a step down they will continue to hold on to power until elections come next year have other any negotiations underway between these two sides. no not at the moment because people who've been protesting it's been largely sporadic people have been organizing themselves based in neighborhoods there is a sudanese professional association that have been mobilizing the protesters over the past few days but they're not the main body that have been there not the only
4:05 pm
body that are basically running these people in these anti monster and to government demonstrations so president bashir and his ruling party at the moment doesn't have a specific side he can negotiate with and he doesn't have what it takes basically very thing that all these promises of economic reforms of increasing civil servants salary ranges mean nothing to them they say that they've heard these promises over and over again so with president bashir having no specifics that he can negotiate with and with the process that feeling that they've heard these promises over and over again it seems like this will be clinton for quite a while have a morgan brings the very latest there from khartoum thanks ever the british prime minister tourism is insisting there is no alternative to her daily as she tries to persuade parliament to support politicians not debating the agreement which sets out the terms of precedence departure from the european union that is supposed to happen in eighty days but on tuesday night may suffered another setback the plans and parliament made it more difficult for a new deal outcome. given this house is now rejected no deal will the prime

minister protect thousands of skilled jobs in the automotive industry and others and rule out no deal it is absolutely sensible for this government to prepare for no deal and those preparations are even more important given the position taken by the right honorable gentleman with an opposition front bench that is opposed to any deal that the government to go see it with the european union it's even more important that we prepare for no deal the deal protect jobs and security and delivers on the referendum and he showed back it. and a whole life for us now in london and a busy few days ahead for the u.k. parliament now and sunny difficult times the prime minister now breaks the deal. yes i think a very difficult few days ahead as well as you say for the prime minister leading up to that meaningful vote next tuesday we expected to happen on her brakes
4:07 pm
a deal you'll recall it was dramatically delayed in december the government fearing a big defeat i think a defeat certainly still very much on the cards and with that in mind. and please in the house of commons who are opposed to the direction the government is taking you up or to opposed in particular to the possibility of a default no deal for example are fighting back effectively in open combat now with the government inflicting their first defeat on tuesday night you mentioned it there a vote with cross party support tabled by the opposition labor party complicating the government's ability to use taxpayer funds to pay for any no deal breaks if it continues on wednesday with an amendment later which could be far more significant an amendment which if it is approved by this majority alliance in parliament would mandate the government to come back within just three days of losing the vote next
4:08 pm
week three days cut to the mandate is twenty one days with a plan b. a statement outlining its vision of what happens next and what's more that statement would itself be amendable by m.p.'s who could at that point attach to it then version of what should happen next including the possibility of a second referendum so as soon as the end of next week you could see happening here in the house of commons to resume a's brigs a deal voted down the labor party who've all but promised to immediately table a vote of confidence in the government to try and trigger a general election and possibly by the end of the week even a vote on a second referendum barry and sing at the dais to watch dana thanks very much for brains abstain that from westminster. now malta says allow two rescue ships that have been stranded at sea for weeks to dock on its shores the maltese prime minister says forty nine people on board the vessels will then be

a spiraling crisis wrists at the southern border in two thousand and seventeen was the lowest in forty five years the number of would be migrants detained last year was list them half of the total arrested in two thousand and seven every week three hundred of our citizens are killed by heroin alone ninety percent of which floods across from our southern border more americans will die from drugs this year then were killed in the entire vietnam war but this is contradicted by the drug enforcement administration which in a report last year said virtually all of the heroin sold in the united states comes through legal points of entry thank you and in a joint appearance the democrat leaders in the house and senate dismiss the address as nothing more than cynical korea mongering this president just used the backdrop of the oval office to manufacture a crisis stoke fear and divert attention from the turmoil in his administration
4:11 pm
the president's address and the democratic response has affected no change and at the weekend this will become the longest ever government shutdown in the nation's history mike hanna al-jazeera washington as go live now to our white house correspondent kimberly harkat in washington d.c. and can the house this televised address from donald trump being received. it doesn't appear that has moved the dial at all laura seems that those that supported the president supported his effort to keep the government closed in an effort to try and get that five point seven billion for physical bare along the southern border with the united states and mexico that they still support him and those that were opposed still are opposed it doesn't appear that not only did donald trump persuade the american public but a similar criticisms are being leveled against the democratic leaders that spoke
4:12 pm
right after him namely nancy pelosi the house speaker and also chuck schumer the top democrat in the senate so what we have here is just sort of a digging in of heels even further the gridlock that donald trump was supposed to when he was elected sort of try and break up a new washington over sorry hardly seeing evidence of that now having said that in terms of the crisis which the president tried to underscore in his view is the situation certainly there's no dispute between democrats and republicans that there's a problem in fact politico a poll going into this speech put forty two percent of americans believe there is a crisis and another thirty seven percent believe there is a problem along with southern border so americans are in agreement about this situation in the southern border that there is a problem with illegal immigration but the difference comes in how to solve it so this is what we're looking ahead to whether or not the congressional leaders can it
4:13 pm
is simply were to stared out who's going to blink first and reopen the government so that eight hundred thousand furloughed workers can get back to work and where do things go next kimberly. so there are number of things that are going to be happening in the next twenty four to forty eight hours we have the president heading up to capitol hill he'll be talking to sort of the rank and file republicans many believe that they are starting to show some cracks feeling like they are being blamed for the shutdown not the democrats and as a result are starting to want to cave in if you will so we're going to see the president in a couple hours time heading up to capitol hill along with the vice president to try and continue to rally the troops at the same time a few hours after that we've got the congressional leaders that means the top republicans and democrats in the house of representatives in the senate heading to the white house this is going to be another example of them trying to come to some resolution what the president we should note his speech said could be done in about forty five minutes but they haven't been able to accomplish it thus far we're going
4:14 pm
to see that and then we know that the president on thursday will be heading to the southern border where he continues to make his case that this is a crisis in an effort to try and resolve this issue but so far it does not look promising doesn't ok kimberly many thanks for bringing us up to speed with the ins going on that. john heilemann has been following the journey of hundreds of asylum seekers from central america trying to cross into the united states. many feel vilified by trump's speech. we were in one of the impromptu shelters that been set up into one mexico to try and help central americans trying to get across the border into the united states and give them some support and shelter this one's in the church we would we watch president from speech with them in the first reaction here was really people quite offended especially his depictions as some people crossing illegally as criminals he told stories about a murderer and about
4:15 pm
a rapist they said you can't just stick his head in the same bucket there's a lot of good people here trying to get there they were talking about why they've gone in this dangerous journey north of the president trump actually alluded to saying that things are so tough back home they didn't have a lot of choice even because violence because of the gangs the really terrorized vast parts of the countries where they live all because of poverty trying to escape make a better life for themselves in the united states some of them are doing the virus asylum some of them. willing to jump over the fence hand themselves in straight away and then start the asylum process that way and some are simply saying that after really hearing about president's current posture and their chances of getting into the united states that way they're just going to try and pay a people smuggler and go across the border obviously that's been happening for some time now and it's what president trump is trying in part to prevent by putting up this wall but illegal migration and apprehensions of the border have been going
4:16 pm
down for more than a decade in the united states he also made a point the president about drugs he said that the war will almost pay for itself because it will stop vast quantities of drugs being trafficked over the border to the u.s. actually most drugs pass through ports of entry into the united states this along with the lines of people and vehicles going through the wall wouldn't necessarily affect that but this is become a potent political symbol for the president and for his opponents in a battle that he's determined to win. plenty more still ahead here on this news hour including. teachers and doctors and zimbabwe joining forces to make a stand against the government's. need to. visit china a day ahead of schedule plus erfurt adult all. the player fans want to see in action at the australian open will have an update on the

agenda for both the americans and the iraqis are two very different things the first thing for the iraqis will be carful cation on the u.s. role within the country itself the u.s. president donald trump visited just after christmas he announced that he wasn't going to pull out u.s. troops from iraq he actually did speak to anybody within the iraqi leadership he made that decision on his own so the iraqis would be seeking clarification on that for the americans is very much about the iranian role within iraq you society both politically and militarily will be seeking clarification on what exactly iran is up to here in iraq now iraq actually has a sanctions waiver to do trade with iran so the americans have long criticized that they're the ones that gave them the sanctions waiver but they have been very critical of it as well turkey's foreign minister is insisting that his country will reject the u.s. request not to target kurdish groups in northern syria once american forces leave.
