continues to many of them wish to go back to their homes and are hoping and expect a turkish led military offensive east of the free cheese river may make that dream become reality. so there are a lot of moving pieces here to make sense of it all our senior political analyst bill schneider is joining us here so the national security advisor john bolton has just said this in the past hour or so that u.s. turkey military to military talks will continue next week and he's also saying that he hopes that talks with turkey will produce results that are acceptable to both sides so what are the results that are acceptable to both sides and if i may add on to that because we have a view on facebook asking will the u.s. be able to ensure that turkey won't go after the y.p. g. which is one of the sticking points really well certainly it has this leverage now very before. for me for the united states to be able to pressure turkey to do things as it wishes when you don't have forces on the ground you have very little
12:01 am
to negotiate with i think. my theory that is my speculation is that's exactly what john bolton tried to do see when when all the signs were including president trump saying we are withdrawing john bolton surprised us last week by saying we're not withdrawing we're staying until the iranians leave until we find out if i so and we agree with the turks about the future of the north north. i mean the northern syria which usually anyone with would know would take years and years and years so what was he doing apparently he was trying to improve his leverage in negotiations with president added to one well guess what president or they wanted to him go home i'm not meeting with you i only meet with the president so i think it backfired and in fact there is there are reports that from the american military that they say we do not think orders from john bolton we take orders from the commander in chief sue the minister of defense so are we simply in
12:02 am
a situation now where the u.s. syria policy which has never really been clear from the beginning is just being driven by internal u.s. domestic politics basically what the that's definitely the case the idea would drawing is politics not policy politics not policy but the policy that they're trying to build on the basis of the politics has been stated by pompei yesterday and by bolton throughout which is look we might you would drawing militarily from syria but we're going to we're going to remain engaged diplomatically and other means through our allies we're going to be putting pressures we're going to be engage and maybe they would use the air force you know if you don't have to be on the ground in order to take certain military actions so they value to remain engaged in syria and in the region in general and let's remember while turkey you know has certain national security interests of its own it is still
12:03 am
a nato member it's still an ally of the united states it's that. pendant on being not certain a number of things just like there are says the paint on turkey so i don't think president simply going to go wild enough in syria just because the americans left i think at the end of the day now he has more leverage to do some of things he really wanted to do but at the same time he will be sensitive to what the americans want to do another story you were referring to pompei in just a moment ago we know that on friday he is in the u.a.e. as well as train what is the message that he's taking to the leaders there what we have two issues here issue number one is and the day he arrived to the region his special or the u.s. special envoy to the go through to solve the gulf crisis and to in order to build the middle east strategic alliance together of his of iran and and also rules and didn't see any quit that was a slap in the face to the secretary of state to quit the same day he arrives here so i think there's going to have to be some damage control now by the scripture
12:04 am
said to say look we're going to need to do these two things and these two things are number one resolve the gulf crisis with qatar and i would say with kuwait and all none. by the u.a.e. so is the arabia beheading so i think that's why there is intense journey throughout all these skits once that's done there americans really want to put this myth is that the middle east certain jiko alliance along with jordan and egypt and as we heard from pompei yesterday he would hope only israel will be part of this in order to confront iran and so on so forth but let's start with the first one certainly they're going to have to resolve the gulf crisis because one of the main factors for the escalation of the gulf ice in the first place aside from saudi arabia and you know in the limits is president trump pouring fuel on the fire in the gulf by standing along you know saudi arabia and also what the little realise that he was deceived by the crown prince by the princes for that matter in saudi
12:05 am
arabia and there you see now america has responsibility we hope that secretary pompei you has the support of the president in order to actually put some pressure on abu dhabi and riyadh to you know get on with business in the gulf and after that what's going to happen in terms of the strategic not being if you will in the region we really don't know how this is going to or without i cannot see even though a lot of things are done secretly now i can see the gulf countries not of a saudi arabia for that matter really getting in getting on board with one alana's with israel against iran while the palestinian issue has not been just very briefly then why is it that pompei o announced now this international group or meeting whatever it is that he called it that is going to take place in poland in the next few months focusing on iran well again this is politics and policy at the same time this something that a person from considers to be a central theme for his campaign presidency and middle east policy and i think the
12:06 am
idea of trying to use as many are as us possible to continue on is there and we heard from pompei oh he thinks a lot of people. getting on board i think a lot of people are confused because just a couple years ago everyone was askin to be on board to lift sanctions now everyone wants them to impose sanctions on ok thank you well you may recall the just about twenty four hours ago the secretary of states he spoke at the cairo university saying that president trump has made the decision to bring our troops home from syria but this isn't a change of mission well look at this comes elisa rice barack obama have all spoken in cairo to promote their middle east policies and in this opinion piece joe maccarone looks at what the three cairo speech just tell us about u.s. foreign policy and if and how it's actually changed over the years you can read it on the home page of al-jazeera dot com and you can also get in touch with us here

at the news grid we'd like to hear from you on these stories you can send your comments to any one of our online platforms were on twitter use the hash tag a.j. news grid our handle is age english we're also on facebook at facebook dot com slash al-jazeera you can send us a message on whatsapp or a telegram a plus one seven four five zero triple one one four nine now the losing candidates in the democratic republic of congo's presidential election says he won a landslide victory martin fi ulu cited figures from catholic church observers showing he took more than sixty percent of the vote this contradicts the official tally which crowned his rival felix just a caddy the winner for you who is planning to challenge the results in courts now the head of the u.n. mission in the democratic republic of congo has been briefing the security council on the situation and she warns of growing violence in response to this beaut over the results. why the results were greeted by sea
12:08 am
by scenes of joy in some u.n.c. and you yes strongholds many lawmakers supporters received the news with a sense of disbelief. regrettably serious security incident where noted in several locations most concerning lee in a clearly who drove vans violent protests have reportedly left at least twelve dead including two national police lunched and ten civilian killed by live ammunition as well as significant public property damage we'll be live from just a moment on what's happening on the ground but first we go to our diplomatic editor james bays who will tell us what's happening at the united nations gents. well the
12:09 am
u.n. security council has convened you heard there the special representative and the head of news go the peacekeeping force layla's the ruki she gave her briefing saying that the election went off correctly but of course the challenge is not just about the election and the voting it's about the result and that is what is being currently challenge that's why the security council is being briefed by a large number of briefers you can see the pictures there live we're now seeing the zambian foreign minister from the regional grouping sadec they were one of the observer groups we've just heard from representative the african union they sent eighty observers into the d r c they said that they didn't see major irregularities and they rely on the outcome as announced we've heard too from sandy that is the electoral commission that is on the ground see the president of sani making it clear that he was organizing the election in an atmosphere of mistrust he said that
12:10 am
the election was not perfect but they did the best they could and he believes the outcome and what he's announced is a correct result although it could be challenged in the courts he told the security council that he doesn't want anyone to cancel the election because that would mean organizing a new one and the d r c would be without a president for very many months what we still have to hear from and i think the security council is listening to everyone on this particular occasion because of the controversial circumstances is send co that's the grouping of the catholic bishops they had the largest number of years on the ground and they are the ones who are saying they think there may well be a problem with the results i've spoken to a number of senior diplomats on the security council they are very concerned about the situation a situation where maybe potentially the wrong opposition candidate has been. declared the winner but they're also privately telling me that stability here is
12:11 am
important and if the security council was to say that they thought there were problems with this result what would that mean going down the line in d c in terms of the situation on the ground keeping things calm and avoiding any violence all right let's find out about the situation on the ground james bays thank you for that update from the u.n. and that is where. us from from kinshasa and to first tell us about the opposition candidates martin sayulita so you'll excuse me who has now reacted. that he's relying on numbers from his own tally and the tally from the kept the kitchen he thinks according to those numbers he's the one who should have won the election he's got to give evidence of course and explain how he got to these numbers and how does he plan to do that what he's planning to go to court on saturday way he will brief a couple of judges on his spine of the explain why he thinks he should have won the
12:12 am
judges live in listen to what b.s. to say if they throw the case out it means that really his days are numbered because you know gratian will take place on january eighteenth so on saturday if the judges throw it out they will officially declare the k.b. as president elect and then on january eighteenth actually giving will be sworn in as president if that happens and however one of our viewers on facebook to saying this that the congo is really trying to have a peaceful transition what is the mood now on the streets like. well people will at some point hope will i think while and there's no violence of course reeling off to the middle duration then this will be the first democratic transfer of power since independence from belgium in one thousand think the big deal lot of people but they are closely aligned about how the next few days will play out is mark if i you to doesn't accept that it's out he tells his people to go
12:13 am
onto the street compulsion is the fear it could be violent it stayed quiet today in kinshasa in other parts of the country i think people are waiting to see how the next few days and of course what happened on saturday went by you to prevent his finding he judges in court. thank you so will there be a peaceful transition of power that is the topic of the latest episode of inside story it's now available to watch online at al-jazeera dot com so it's the day hundreds of thousands of federal employees in the u.s. should have received their paychecks but their pais been blocked by a political fight over funding president trump's demand for border wall as a partial government shutdown enters a twenty first day if the deadlock continues into saturday it will be the longest consecutive shutdown in u.s. history nine departments including agriculture homeland security state transportation states transportation interior and justice are all affected some
12:14 am
eight hundred thousand workers right across these departments are not being paid roughly four hundred twenty thousand of them have to keep working because they're classified as essential personnel applications for unemployment benefits are piling up as the shutdown continues and thousands of federal workers are looking for assistance to get by well close to washington d.c. is the state of maryland that's where more than twenty thousand federal workers have been affected and gallagher sent us this report from its largest city baltimore. this government building in the heart of downtown baltimore is normally a hive of activity its doors are now closed its workers furloughed and the impact on the streets close by is clear over the last few weeks mohammed has seen his business declined sharply it's what's. he tells us who leave the area if things don't return to normal soon if you see you know a lifestyle. like nothing here you know is. the business.
12:15 am
to bring you know. darryl but it's been a federal employee for decades this isn't the first government shutdown he's lived through but the longer it lasts the harder it gets for his family or drop of gas in the car today or do our way to the weekend do. buy groceries today or from the way to enough going to be a long from things that can get a little bit cheaper in all twenty three thousand federal employees across maryland are either working without pay or of been furloughed it's one of the worst affected states and the impact is widely felt when this partial government shutdown ends there's a good chance that the eight hundred thousand federal workers will get back pay for those contracted by the government to rely on federal resources to provide services that can mean the difference between life and death the future is less certain nevertheless we've met people here so committed to what they do that continuing to
12:16 am
work not knowing where their next paycheck will come from native american life lines receives federal funding from a now closed government department staff to provide support for addiction mental health and vital medical services not that i can save everyone but at least being here they know that they have a home and a safe place to be and we won't be able to pry that. and it worries me if there's no resolution by saturday this will be the longest government shutdown in u.s. history it's a prospect that many here and across the u.s. consul for to face and he gallagher will join us now from baltimore so as you're saying it could become one of the longest government shutdowns in history and no paychecks coming through at all and we see from your report that people are having a really hard time coping they really all this is the human face of political argument when you put the rhetoric to one side over the last couple of days we've
12:17 am
met people who are simply struggling making incredibly hard choices you know i read one report from a homeless charity that says most of his in this country are two paychecks away from being homeless that's just how desperate people law but it's not so much about the federal workers who most likely will get by pay when and if this ever ends it's those contractors that you really have to think about people cleaning toilets in airports cab drivers local businesses who depend on federal workers to make their living who are facing the toughest choices here they don't get by pay when and if this government closure finally ends and it's those people that are perhaps suffering the most we just filmed in baltimore for two days and you saw the kinds of people that we found there the last lady in that report continuing to work despite not knowing what her next paycheck is because she knows that what she does the services she provides are the difference for many of her clients between life
12:18 am
and death and when you speak to people and see who do they blame for the shutdown and do they feel like they're being used as pawns stuck in this political stalemate . there wasn't one person we spoke to in baltimore that didn't feel like they were being used as a political pawn in this argument between president trump and the democratic party to a person they all feel like they're stuck between an argument should be fixed sooner rather than later asked for blame most of them in support of building any kind of fence or wall along the us mexico border that those are the political beliefs i can't speak for everybody that is affected by this but the real truth of the matter is the longer this goes on the deeper the suffering gets we've got one terminal just closed down in miami but we heard about that yesterday that will seriously affect lots of customers because t.s.a. agents on going into work and the longer this goes on the mall those kinds of effects of the felt but it's the effects on the families the effects on those
12:19 am
businesses related to federal workers that are really hitting people hard this is a serious situation now i think for many people on this day when their paychecks turned up with a big fat zero on them that the reality of this political argument is really hitting home all right and a gallagher thank you so as with big news stories like this one conversation spill over naturally to social media sarah has been looking into how those affected by the shutdown sarah really coping well i mean i know see that's a bleak picture painted the. of basically going up by the day but rather than sit idle many of them are taking part in process that popping up across the country in fact and some of them have had to make some very tough decisions whether it's scaling back on expenses juggling to pay bills rent even taking up a second job or loans just to survive and in times of need people tend to ride
12:20 am
together we're seeing a lot of stories on social media americans trying to do whatever they can really to help federal workers and their families as well and this is an example restaurants opening up their doors and one of those people who is doing. it's activist and top chef jose on dress and what's he's saying that he's going to use while he's already joined in the movement he's offering free sandwiches for lunch for what he calls the poor men and women of the federal government republicans and democrats at every restaurant of his in washington d.c. says until they get paid again and there's also a cafe that's across the road from the national zoo in d.c. as well it's also offering free coffee despite losing money they say that the offer that free coffee while those supplies lawson is just a small thanks to their federal friends and also photos are being posted on social media even just in the last few hours and they're showing rows and rows of food that's being prepared at food banks again especially in the d.c. area but it doesn't stop there because
12:21 am
a congressman from texas that's congressman dan crenshaw he on thursday tweeted that he will forego his pay in solidarity with all of the federal workers he tweeted that he cannot get paid while federal employees he says financial future hangs in the balance and that's his letter they're requesting that but he also joins more than seventy members of congress who've refused to be paid since the shutdown started now some lawmakers have asked for their pay to be held while others are donating them to different charities and it's not a small sum by the way because house members and senators do make an average of about one hundred seventy four thousand dollars a year and famous comedians also across the u.s. have also been covering this story and some of the biggest shows one of them took it a step further and every night this week we've been giving some of those people jobs a monday we had a prison guards in with a ban on tuesday with a foreigner fireworks security with guillermo last night a t.s.a.

worker trying to help me search people for pot and tonight. tonight we welcome a gentleman who does air traffic control and let's bring him in. so you can see quite a lot being done there but one of the main concerns for americans in all of this has actually been the national parks they're hugely popular tourist spots not just for tourists but locals as well and they stand to lose quite a lot because in of a few days ago that she told you about trees that have been dying at a park that's an example so is that conversation that's happening on social media but community volunteers all helping to try and keep the parks going especially this one in fact some of the protected trees in this park in california have died because of vandalism so that just gives you an idea of what people are saying we want to hear if you are part of the shutdown and we want to hear your story and you can get in touch with us at the hash tag aging news grid so we thank you and we do continue to cover the human impact of the shutdown on our web site al jazeera dot
12:23 am
com as it spreads right across the united states particle hayne has filed this report where she takes an in-depth look at the toll that it's taking on federal workers. here watching the news grid on al-jazeera if you're with us on facebook live we've got more on the hour house democrats have to make it rain subpoenas on president trump that's coming up on facebook it's from our colleagues at a.j. plus in fact and we happened just a moment we'll look at the case of the two reuters journalists serving seven in here president sentences for exposing an army massacre of fraud been java ledgers. hello again welcome back we're here cross the western part of the levant we have seen quite a bit of snow and rain over the last couple of days things are looking much better
12:24 am
but i want to show you some images that have come out of parts of lebanon expression the higher elevations look at all the snow that has accumulated across this area now the still to be dealing with the snow but there is going to be some rain coming into the forecast over the next few days but look how high those snow banks are this could turn very messy as the rain comes into play saturday really not looking too bad here across much of the region but we are going to be watching that weather system coming out of the mediterranean and there is the rain by the time we get to sunday no snow and that's going to cause quite a bit of a mess if those temperatures do go down below freezing which they may in the overnight hours that could turn icy for many locations well here across the gulf we are looking at clouds across much of the area particular up here towards the north and that is going to be we are going to be seeing a mostly cloudy day overcast day for many locations here for so for doha twenty two degrees here on saturday going to bout twenty three maybe a little bit more of a break in the clouds as we go toward sunday afternoon and then very quickly across parts of madagascar mozambique very heavy rain shows had been the trend over the last few days we are seeing those coastal showers continue across most of the area

those are the headlines on al-jazeera and these are the most read stories right now on our web site al-jazeera dot com the top spot mohammad been cited as a touch with his former saudi. so you can read more about that story by heading to al-jazeera dot com if you look at the fourth story the wives of reporters shocked over. a verdict that is our next story coming up. so high court. rejected an appeal by two reuters journalists who are serving seven year prison sentences wallowed and so were convicted of breaking the official secrets act by reporting an army massacre of muslims the reporters say they were framed by police who gave them classified documents heiler has an update from bangkok. the high court in yangon announced that it had rejected this appeal in the

afternoon on friday they said that there was not enough evidence that these two gentlemen were innocent so they were saying that the conviction was upheld and also is when it comes to how long they would spend behind bars they were sentenced to seven years back in september there was a possibility with the appeal that that sense could be reduced but the court on friday the high court in yangon saying that there was a suitable punishment of seven years because of the severity of what this case was about that it threatens to harm national security so these gentlemen for now will stay behind bars according to the high court in yangon for seven years now very soon after the word came out about this on friday the editor in chief of reuters made a statement today's ruling is yet another in justice among many inflicted upon why lone and. they remain behind bars for one reason those in power sought to silence the truth reporting is not a crime and until meehan maher writes this terrible wrong the press would mean mars

not free and in march commitment to rule of law and democracy remains in doubt now for the future what could happen to these two journalists now that their appeal has been rejected the defense can appeal to the supreme court in myanmar's capital neighborhood or there's no indication or word that they will do that yet and then the only other option for them is unsung suchi the state council the leader of myanmar issues a pardon but again there's no word if that's going to happen either. well thousands of youngsters have been protesting in brussels against climate change and they've been posting their videos to social media sorry you have the details on the story yeah we actually found out more about this because of the amount of it is that the prices say magine being stuck in your car running late because of thousands of flemish teenagers blocking the rights. any this time they have a clear message that they'll continue to miss school every thursday until the government takes action against climate change now this is the scene in brussels

the full climate much started in front of parliament and made its way through the city. but the minister of education reacted by saying they shouldn't miss out on their education. reform deaf ears because the students say they'll continue to protest with a march already planned later this month there denouncing the government's refusal recently to sign a twenty four declaration in poland agreement calls for concreteness reduce carbon pollution as well as global warming and this is the girl who inspired the school strike for crime it movement's sixteen year old greer to two and buys one week is on rather the week twenty one of not going to school this is her latest photo but she posts a bear and she was part of a story that went viral and that's how she became known and she ended up giving a speech at twenty four on the need to take action now before it's too late. but

i've learned that you are never too small to make a difference. and if a few children can get headlines all over the world just by not going to school then imagine what we could all do together if we really wanted to you know only talk about moving forward with the same bad ideas that got us into this mess even when the only sensible thing to do is pull the emergency brake you are not mature enough to tell it like it is even the burden you leave to us children. but i don't care about being popular. i care about climate justice and the living planet very quiet person quite quite feisty greta started the hashtag fridays for future and i love this picture here because this one says make the world greta again and that's why today friday in finland and
12:32 am
other countries around the world students are striking in fact this tweet here was taken outside helsinki's parliament and it's this post this is the picture here that they've posted you can just see there outside of parliament and the person who wrote this tweet said that the message at the parliament house accuse clear adults and decision makers must act to ensure the future of children and young people as well and people that we're hearing this message are also from the federation of young european greens based in brussels because that's a coalition group taking on politicians in the european parliament. we're going to be back next year with the european elections are taking place and it's one of our generation's biggest opportunities for the european project back on track with the federation of young european greece we want to build a more sustainable more solar cells and more welcoming an inclusive europe and in many respects we already did exactly dead part of basra hears young green members of the european parliament of infighting every day. and the moment that momentum is
12:33 am
continuing because so far ten climate strikes are planned on the eighteenth of january and that's just in switzerland but also students in other countries have been taking part for example this one here was taken in uganda and they're quite pleased to continue they said doing more and his also a message from flossy in ireland calling on others to join in next month's protests this is a shout out to all those little and we need help because readers are trying to strike outside every school and i wanted to show the government that we do need an education. well so far the protests have received a lot of support on social media and these are some of the messages like this one that we're seeing this presence is young people trying to shake things up for the comments are not irresponsible but more responsible then opinion makers and politicians will keep an eye on that story especially on the future prices that

a number of countries told me that they're in a somewhat difficult position if they were just looking at this morally from the information they're hearing then perhaps they should call for more inquiries into the election perhaps they should speak out quite strongly about a result that seems suspect but they say that given the fragile security situation in the democratic republic of congo perhaps the best thing to do is to favor instead stability in trying to get the various opposition candidates to try and find a way to work together james at the u.n. thanks very much let's go from the u.n. to the congolese capital itself kinshasa and speak to al-jazeera is haram a tussle so most of all you know absolutely insistent that he did win the election and he's prepared to take legal action. while much of it is according to his own tally and the tally from the catholic church he thinks he won the election but
