made clear what they don't want we must all work constructively together to set out what parliament does want. that's why i'm inviting m.p.'s from all parties to come together to find a way forward one that both delivers on the referendum and can command the support of parliament this is now the time to put self interest aside commons responded by saying hello and talk to the prime minister when she rules out a no deal brokered. last night of talks with party leaders turned out to be simply a stunt not a serious attempt to engage with the new reality that is needed no sooner had she said the words in parliament than the government confirmed that she would not take no deal off the table so i say to the prime minister.
9:20 pm
i am quite happy to talk but the starting point for any talks about brics it must be that the threat of a disaster is no deal outcome is ruled out take it off the table. or the top story in ten years the red cross says everyone missing after tuesday's attack on a luxury hotel complex has been accounted for at least twenty one people died in the year sol term the first funerals of the victims of being held in nairobi also doctors in zimbabwe say at least sixty eight people have been treated for gunshot wounds after mass protests this week more than a dozen to have emergency surgery there have been days of demonstrations across the country in protest against the doubling of fuel prices. well in tunisia thousands of workers run strike demanding higher pay the protest follows a breakdown in negotiations between powerful labor unions and the government

the united nations condemns reports of excessive use of force in sudan as troops fired tear gas at demonstrators. also seven people arrested kenya there is the victims of the nairobi hotel attack which killed twenty one people. and having survived a no confidence motion in the u.k. prime minister asks rivals who tried to push her out for compromise. and a leading rights group accuses the saudi government of a pattern of lawless behavior which has been exposed by the murder of journalist. and i'm lee harvey here with all the day's sport that's twenty three time grand slam winner serena williams dominated the third round of the australian open in melbourne we have that story and plenty more for you later in the hour.
9:50 pm
welcome to the news of the u.k. prime minister trees of mayors having talks with rival party leaders trying to find a way forward on brics it she's reaching out after. no really surviving a no confidence vote sparked by the crushing defeat of her e.u. withdrawal deal the prime minister has until monday to present her plan b. to parliament and if she fails to get it approved then britain faces the real prospect of breaking away from the e.u. on march the twenty ninth without a deal to avoid this the british government could propose to negotiate an entirely new agreement and this could mean asking the e.u. for an extension to the departure deadline other options include calling for another referendum a snap general election or even cancelling breaks it all together and all of this the prime minister has flatly ruled out what treason may says she's disappointed that the labor leader jeremy called in has failed to take part and cross party discussions he has responded by saying that i'll only talk to the prime minister
9:51 pm
when she rules out a no deal breaks it last night of talks with party leaders turned out to be simply a stunt not a serious attempt to engage with the new reality that is needed no sooner had she said the words in parliaments than the government confirmed that she would not take no deal off the table so i say to the prime minister again i'm quite happy to talk but. the starting point for any talks about brics it must be that the threat of a disastrous no deal outcome is ruled out take it off the table. let's cross over to our correspondent jonah hole who's at westminster in london of course jonah you know invitation by the prime minister over across party lines to try and find
9:52 pm
a way forward and that's the real problem she has doesn't see it because there's another d.-day another deadline and that's obviously next monday. yes it's not entirely clear what she's trying. but we seem to have a slight problem with that connection to general try to get back to him of course and get the updates on what's going on certainly in london but of course the ramifications of what happened over the last few days are now transpiring across europe the prime minister the prime ministers of e.u. states for example france has held a cabinet meeting to discuss ways to prepare for a no deal brics it edward phillipe says more than fifty million dollars will be invested in the french ports and airports to alleviate the impact of a so-called hard bricks in the contingency plan focuses on cross border trade and
9:53 pm
transport fronts and the rest of the e.u. insists the brits it deal agreed with the prime minister is the best it can offer to it might be flexible on the departure date for the u.k. as david chaytor explains from brussels. one european lawmaker unkindly described the scenes in the house of commons of the last few days as a theater of the absurd but make no mistake a tall european leaders are taking very seriously the prospect of a no deal breaks it approaching on march the twenty ninth all european capitals now making sure their contingency plans are in place they'll be reviewing those over the next few hours and few days because at the moment that prospect means that it's not only the united kingdom's economy that could be badly damaged but also the european union's there are talk of this talk of the recession looming here
9:54 pm
in europe there's been a downturn in the german economy the main engine of the european union and also worries over spain italy and of course france in the middle of the leisure on the yellow vest crisis so they're all looking to their own plans at the moment but hoping some sort of resolution can come forward now the main concentration is of course on trying to push back that cliff edge brags that which appears on march the twenty ninth now if reason may can come up with some solid new strategy with across party talks then i think you'll find a good reception in the european union to the idea of moving back to that cliff edge to later in the year to give more time for a new strategy and new ideas to evolve let's cross back to a journal who last us a few months ago sorry about that we were talking about those cross party talks so what's reason make it actually achieved before another deadline which is next
9:55 pm
monday. yes that's right i mean she suffered that bruising defeat of her breaks the deal on tuesday night followed by a reprieve on wednesday surviving a vote of confidence in parliament but undeniably weakened to resume a as prime minister and her government as well of course and allegedly now on this in search of a compromise consensus by reaching out across party lines but not everybody is biting let's talk more about this with my guest jonathan lisey's deputy director of the think tank british influence thanks for joining us jonathan the search for compromises on. precious little sign of it out there will trees amaze is a parody reaching out to other parties while refusing to budge an inch on how redlines all the other parties are resolutely opposed to bret's it with the exception of the labor party which wants her to rule out a new deal and to rule in the customs union both of which she's failed to do so it
9:56 pm
doesn't seem obvious what's possible advances she can make to her cause without budging on the customs union forcing the markets or no deal the suggestion is she's just buying time and using these talks as an opportunity to try and persuade m.p.'s to vote for her deal on a second round of voting and keep this threat this this is perilous. threat of no deal hanging over them if she does that that would be a great betrayal of the british people in a sense that running down the clock is not a responsible course of action and you know what's what's to stop her doing that will parliament ultimately has to has a say over whether she can remain in the government can remain now if she is winding down the clock to the extent the no deal becomes the v. chosen path if you like then the optics and the numbers will change very quickly and parliament i think will then agree to have no confidence in the government and
9:57 pm
so she will no deal is simply not an option the parliament will do absolutely everything it can to stop that happening because while there isn't a majority there any breaks it option at the moment there is a massive majority against no deal so in other words the only way to actually ensure as you put it that no deal can take place is for yet another vote of confidence to take place possibly another one after that and push it so close to the knife edge that everybody sort of decides they've got no option but wait to see what theresa may brings back to the commons on monday but it seems the first thing the she'll cave on if you like is to extend article fifty she says she doesn't want to do that but there is simply no way that we'll be ready to leave the e.u. on the twenty ninth of my. even if she gets her deal data three so that really is the first thing to go share with the e.u. and then we can deal with the other options so those really are perhaps three or four things the first one is to have may's deal as it stands which is simply out the question because it will be very stout handsomely the second is to renegotiate her deal to have a customs union which will bring in some labor m.p.'s dried out last tories the
9:58 pm
third one is to renegotiate that deal to make costings ian anderson will market the so-called norway plus option again that will bring in some some remain as dr vass lot of right says there's no guarantee it'll be a sensible compromise the fourth one is have no breakfast at all and that will come after a second referendum or in extremis a unilateral revocation of article fifty by the british government ok john we'll leave it there thanks very much for running through all the options with us we know of course that monday is the date by which by the government has returned with its preferred option a plan b as sort of vision of what might happen next then they'll be a series of discussions about all of those other options next week and a vote to take place the next big vote in parliament tuesday week the twenty ninth of january indeed and of course a whole between the two through the day jonah as the twists and turns continue with the breaks at issue thank you. there will be more protests across sudan as the un warns the government against the use of excessive force the demonstrations have become the longest and most sustained since long time president omar al bashir has
9:59 pm
been in power they wanted him to step down over a week on a me and rising prices sudan's government says twenty four people have been killed since the unrest began four weeks ago but rights groups put the figure more than forty. volleys our correspondent force live in khartoum and the public really at large still not very happy with the government's handling of the economy all the steep rise in price prices of really basic goods and those demonstrations continue even beyond the capital. well so here it is the most stations are considered the longest wave of protest against the government since the independence of sudan and they have been now spreading across the country today for instance the the organizers call for widespread protests and that includes khartoum and at least eight other cities in the east and in other parts of the country here in khartoum or does this try to
10:00 pm
converge to the center of the city for what will be the first for the second time since the beginning of this wave of protests and they could not because security presence has been heavier than ever before and the intention of the protesters was to march to the presidential palace and to hand again a letter asking that president omar hasn't been to attend his resignation and leave power but they could not they were dispersed very quickly but the other parts of khartoum well tests are going on for at least two hours now small pockets of protesters gathering here and there are being chased by security forces there has been sort of also protests as i said in other cities of i'll still go out on the expectation is that people will be more able to gather in other cities in the outskirts like in the far flung parts of the country because of the presence of the security there is less than in khartoum so it's.
