would go where this was and obviously this has been going on for months like i said i am this international says at least forty people have been killed activists to flee safety with the government saying that the death toll is twenty four now people are saying that it doesn't matter what the government will do the president said he's going to try to change it seems the president said he's going to try to prove the economic situation but people are saying to put this promises over and over again and the only thing they want is one him to step down and see somebody else to control sudan have to cross through to the divine president who said he's not going to step down and between the people who say they will continue to protest until he does. of all is the executive director of the world peace foundation at the fletcher school at tufts university joins us live from boston now thank you very much for taking the time to speak to us reports from sudan suggest that that has been the use of excessive force by security forces that do you fear they'll be more bloodshed. i think of as things go for sure will be more bloodshed the key word here is sustained protest and not just

in khartoum also in a number of major provincial cities and perhaps it's in those cities that we should those other cities that we should be more concerned about lethal force so this sustained protest is move is meeting an apparently immovable object president bashir who has expressed no indication of any significant compromise let alone stepping down so i fear there is more of this to come if you mention the provincial cities where there could be developments that we're not necessarily aware of all perhaps is a lack of information coming from these places do you think we have a clear picture of what is happening in sudan at the moment. well i think overall we do have a clear picture which is as your correspondents have said the most widespread sustained societal least supported protests against this government for

for thirty years since it it came to power very much redolent of the protests that brought down the previous military dictatorships of abraham upload in one nine hundred sixty four jeff and he married in one thousand nine hundred five and of course the the arab spring protests of of of eight years ago and remarkably despite the provocations from the security forces despite the fact that there are ongoing rural insurrections in different parts of saddam these are overwhelmingly disciplined nonviolent protests and it is that commitment to nonviolence to a peaceful change that has meant that the death toll whether it is forty or fifty one one doesn't know but the death toll has been far less than it would have been if these protests have been met with the kind of ruthless military action that we've seen in response to military insurgencies in darfur in the south and in the

nuba mountains economic problems have now led to calls for political change will president bashir be able to write this out. well he has one set of very strong cards to play which is that in the past and in other countries faced with this sort of protest the critical factor has been the army the army has has been a more or less independent national institution with the army command taking of the decision of the critical point to abandon the president the president and stand with the people now in the case of saddam the army is deeply divided and president bashir has a deep and personal encyclopedic knowledge of the officer corps and moreover he has a separate parallel national intelligence and security service which is also extremely well armed which can be a force commensurate with that of the army in khartoum and other major cities so

the senior military and security officers do not have that sort of institutional cohesion which would allow them to turn against the president so i think it's very likely that we can have a stalemate that president bashir will be able to stay in power for for the time being while the country continues in this on pass in this economic and political crisis thank you very much for your analysis alex deval executive director of the world peace foundation affected school at tufts university you're very welcome. now to our other top story this hour the white house says a second summit between donald trump and north korean leader kim jong un will take place at the end of february junks lead negotiator a new pay to play mystique in young child as hell talks with the president and secretary of state might impair trump's first meeting with kim jong un took place in singapore in june of last year but he joins us now from washington passy what

more do we know about the talks have just taken place and what they might might try to accomplish in s. second summit. well somewhat for us to frustrating lee at least for the media we didn't see very much we saw a brief pause for a handshake between your secretary of state mike pump a on the chief north korean negotiator kim yong schol but we do know that after that the meeting apparently well well enough to travel to the white house and had a ninety minute meeting with u.s. president donald trump after that the state department says the secretary basically treated the north korean delegation to lunch at their washington d.c. hotel then we saw the white house press secretary come out and say things went so well we're going to go ahead with the second summit it's going to happen at the end of february and yet to be determined country although there's been a lot of speculation that it will be vietnam in vietnam now there this is been controversial president met with him in singapore he came out after the means said sleep well everyone's problem solved and basically said north korea is going to

denuclearize they haven't done that according to sources inside the u.s. government the u.s. has been asking just for a list of what weapons they haven't have not been able to get those and there's a fight over what denuclearization actually means but for the white house as part they say look what we haven't seen are a missile tests or any new nuclear tests and that is in itself progress so this summit is going to be an attempt to actually push it forward because right now we've had a proclamations but we've seen no concrete steps to actually get to the goal which the president said was already solved so there will be pressure at this summit to have something more than what they had at the first summit but from the white house perspective they say this is progress talking means something thank you very much from washington patty calling. in on the developments president trump has denied allegations that he directed his then personal lawyer to lie to congress of plans to build a trump tower in moscow accusations have been made been in a report by buzz feed news well now damage.
