word about where his whereabouts exactly and the condition he's in now let's remember several activists have been arrested since the protests began the government has reported that at least eight hundred people have been arrested most of them activists and people who are participating in the protests more protests planned for today here and presumably more focus as well on the way the government has responded to these protests. well the protests have already started in the university of what any and how to whom students came out to protest against president obama and wishing you the security forces responded using tear gas to try to disperse the students but they're locked in within the university campus and they say they're having a hard time trying to get out because there are security forces stationed outside and they're worried that they too would be arrested just like activists have been arrested over the past few weeks now people are saying that they will continue to protest that they will continue to do it straight until president i'm going to show your step down something he said he's not going to do he's been accusing the protesters of being infiltrated by foreign agents of his term them as traitors but
1:04 pm
he's also said that his security forces the police and the military have nothing to do with the killing of protesters now people who are reporting activists who've been keeping track of the people who have been killed in the protest say at least fifty people have been killed the government is this feeling that figure is saying only twenty six have been killed and that it's not the security forces but there are questions about who is doing the killing in sudan. the home of dr bao because he didn't come to the house in a constant stream of mourners since he was shot during an anti-government protest on thursday his house has also become a meeting place for supporters and sympathizers who are. of my five children he's my only son he never had a problem with anyone but he was always wanting to help those in need. three of our sisters are also doctors they say he was shot by members of the security forces are to makeshift clinic that he set up in the capital. the family showed us a photo of

1:18 pm
switzerland for the annual world economic forum this year's theme is globalization but there are several who will not be that u.s. president donald trump and u.k. prime minister to resign may are both dealing with domestic issues back home china's cooling economy is likely to be high on the agenda that's made worse by its recent trade war with the u.s. and the international monetary fund is warning it could lead to a global economic slowdown as we mentioned probably the biggest name missing this year is donald trump our diplomatic correspondent james bays looks at the impression he made last year and his impact on the global economy since then. one year ago when president trump arrived in davos the business world was already aware of the unpredictable nature of the u.s. is most unusual more than president most of the well read intellectually focused and strategically minded business leaders who attend this annual gathering could
1:19 pm
not be more different from donald trump a man who once ran casinos and arguably sometimes ran his empire as if he was in a casino yet when he came here he walked around the holes on a victory lap he was proud of a strong economy united states is doing fantastically well and he stated here as he did many times elsewhere that he was most happy to be judged by one metric the stock market is smashing one record after another and has added more than seven trillion dollars in new wealth since my election it didn't stay that way increased volatility at the end of the year meant two thousand and eighteen ended up the worst year on the us stock market for a decade so would trump receive a similar reception if he was coming to davos this year i asked a leading economist i know it's quite different from last year he had just passed
1:20 pm
the big tax cut and they were about to increase spending for the economy in the short run was very positive and so there was a sort of a legitimate optimism about the u.s. economy a year ago what's become clear is that that was a short term boost not a long term boost and i think one has to look at the way financial markets have behaved of the last several months as at least creating circumstances where a recession is probably more likely. than it would have been otherwise james phase out is there. a james joins us live now from james what can we expect that they want. well we have a gathering of world leaders and business leaders as ever here in the end in divorce but of course president trump as you've just heard is the most notable absentee he will be represented here not in person by anyone but his secretary of
1:21 pm
state might pompei or will be addressing the delegates via video conference or washing to do you see the whole of the u.s. delegation the treasury the state department the white house no one came here in the end and president trump didn't come here very different scene from a year ago when president trump seemed to be on a victory lap henry kerr is the economics editor of the economist newspaper henry perhaps you could compare a year ago i was here there were really triumphant scenes with president trump in the hole behind you the mood is different yes exactly well a year ago the world economy was in a very optimistic state it was really at the peak of the world economic boom the story in two thousand and eighteen of course has been one of gradual economic deceleration and there are mounting problems it seems coming out of china and you've got the shutdown in the u.s. brics it so i'd say a slightly more worried move in davos this year tell us a little bit more about those figures coming from china is the worry china's own
1:22 pm
economy or is it the worry of the trade war between the u.s. and china i think a bit of both the worry is the impact that the trade war has on china has on confidence and then the ability of a slowdown in china to sort of rebound on the rest of the world particularly europe the g.d.p. figures this week in china weren't actually much worse than expected they were pretty much in line but there was some very bad trade data last week and of course the trade data is more clearly linked to their to the trade war even if that goes away even if a deal was struck between trump and cheating paying there's of course still problems in the chinese economy that trying to sort out all the bad debts in their financial system and that's still going to be doing to slow economic growth i think they see. so then when we look at the economic situation and a possible downturn coming and combine that with the us political cycle we have a president who's now in his second year of a four year administration i assume the nightmare scenario for president trump is
1:23 pm
a downturn even the recession in a year's time election year yes i say so and i'd say that explains some of his actions i mean perhaps not so much with respect to the shutdown but over the last few months the kind of comments he's made about the federal reserve raising interest rates it looks like they're going to hold off this year now most people say any financial markets expect but certainly if the fed tightens monetary policy a lot you might get a downturn in twenty nineteen or twenty twenty as you say that coincides with the electoral cycle in a way that wouldn't be good for the president so just to finish off on that an election year with a recession how likely. well there are plenty of people forecasting i wouldn't say it's more than likely but it's a it's a it's a distinct possibility and recur the economics editor of the economist thank you for joining us here at davos has an important speakers coming up i think the big thing to watch though as i mentioned there is the contribution from the u.s. coming from a far by video link the u.s.

is warning of a global slowdown u.s. president donald trump is one of several leaders who stayed away to deal with domestic issues at home. all right let's speak now to a senior political analyst. in london so when we look at davos there's a lot of problems in the world right now. but it seems that there's a lack of leadership to solve them at the moment what's your take on that. well absolutely and you can judge that from not those who are present in davos this year but those who are absent from davos this year and that's basically the leaders of some of the countries some of the world's leading economies including the united states but not just the united states but also the united kingdom china india and so on and so forth so there's really a the absence of the of the world's leading economies is a testimony not only to
1:30 pm
a slowing economy but there are crises today in those countries political and economic crisis as we know like the shutdown of the united states whether it is also the yellow vests in france and the up evils of the middle classes the terrible slowdown in china the worst since one nine hundred ninety political instability in india were of course more these facing somebody challenge after the original elections and so on so forth so everyone has problems on what is clear is that none of these and a lot of others want to show up and out of us and boast because really in the end of the day while that was might be a forum for some dialogue and and some you know effect of sort but in the end of the day it is a sort of you know top of the shoulder congratulating of the global elites that are proving to be more and more disconnected from the people around the world and we
1:31 pm
mentioned earlier that globalization is is the theme of the forum this year how would you assess the state of globalization particularly that. this whole phenomenon of populism which is very much against that is. still very much apparent right now. well certainly the slogan of the war the canonic forum in terms of improving the state of the world is not only pompous it's proven since nine hundred seventy one to be far from anything like that in fact the leading problem in the world today after many were lifted out of poverty in china india brazil and other countries is rising inequality and that's the last place you will look for to read a result of that it's another thing that's becoming also a problem especially with the from administration being so present is of course the question of climate change so all i know there are huge problems facing the world
1:32 pm
economy and the world polity and leaders are falling short therefore in short on the one hand because the bilateral and multilateral are not going very well whether on trade or other issues and the us is really setting the worst of examples on the throw up and mr a should for walking away from the climate change from trade agreements threatening to walk away from even the strategic alliances and so on so forth so really all in or a true crisis of leadership around the world and that force as i said is the last big that has all of it so what we would see in davos is probably at a fraction of that kind of a crisis that you see globally right senior political analyst. joining us from london thanks michael. our group of venezuela's national guard soldiers have been arrested that's after a video appeared on social media showing a sergeant demanding president remove reports you notice. these are members of the believer in national guard in venezuela they say they do
