switzerland for the annual world economic forum this year's theme is globalization but there are several who will not be that u.s. president donald trump and u.k. prime minister to resign may are both dealing with domestic issues back home china's cooling economy is likely to be high on the agenda that's made worse by its recent trade war with the u.s. and the international monetary fund is warning it could lead to a global economic slowdown as we mentioned probably the biggest name missing this year is donald trump our diplomatic correspondent james bays looks at the impression he made last year and his impact on the global economy since then. one year ago when president trump arrived in davos the business world was already aware of the unpredictable nature of the u.s. is most unusual more than president most of the well read intellectually focused and strategically minded business leaders who attend this annual gathering could

not be more different from donald trump a man who once ran casinos and arguably sometimes ran his empire as if he was in a casino yet when he came here he walked around the holes on a victory lap he was proud of a strong economy united states is doing fantastically well and he stated here as he did many times elsewhere that he was most happy to be judged by one metric the stock market is smashing one record after another and has added more than seven trillion dollars in new wealth since my election it didn't stay that way increased volatility at the end of the year meant two thousand and eighteen ended up the worst year on the us stock market for a decade so would trump receive a similar reception if he was coming to davos this year i asked a leading economist i know it's quite different from last year he had just passed

the big tax cut and they were about to increase spending for the economy in the short run was very positive and so there was a sort of a legitimate optimism about the u.s. economy a year ago what's become clear is that that was a short term boost not a long term boost and i think one has to look at the way financial markets have behaved of the last several months as at least creating circumstances where a recession is probably more likely. than it would have been otherwise james phase out is there. a james joins us live now from james what can we expect that they want. well we have a gathering of world leaders and business leaders as ever here in the end in divorce but of course president trump as you've just heard is the most notable absentee he will be represented here not in person by anyone but his secretary of

economy or is it the worry of the trade war between the u.s. and china i think a bit of both the worry is the impact that the trade war has on china has on confidence and then the ability of a slowdown in china to sort of rebound on the rest of the world particularly europe the g.d.p. figures this week in china weren't actually much worse than expected they were pretty much in line but there was some very bad trade data last week and of course the trade data is more clearly linked to their to the trade war even if that goes away even if a deal was struck between trump and cheating paying there's of course still problems in the chinese economy that trying to sort out all the bad debts in their financial system and that's still going to be doing to slow economic growth i think they see. so then when we look at the economic situation and a possible downturn coming and combine that with the us political cycle we have a president who's now in his second year of a four year administration i assume the nightmare scenario for president trump is

a downturn even the recession in a year's time election year yes i say so and i'd say that explains some of his actions i mean perhaps not so much with respect to the shutdown but over the last few months the kind of comments he's made about the federal reserve raising interest rates it looks like they're going to hold off this year now most people say any financial markets expect but certainly if the fed tightens monetary policy a lot you might get a downturn in twenty nineteen or twenty twenty as you say that coincides with the electoral cycle in a way that wouldn't be good for the president so just to finish off on that an election year with a recession how likely. well there are plenty of people forecasting i wouldn't say it's more than likely but it's a it's a it's a distinct possibility and recur the economics editor of the economist thank you for joining us here at davos has an important speakers coming up i think the big thing to watch though as i mentioned there is the contribution from the u.s. coming from a far by video link the u.s.

is warning of a global slowdown u.s. president donald trump is one of several leaders who stayed away to deal with domestic issues at home. all right let's speak now to a senior political analyst. in london so when we look at davos there's a lot of problems in the world right now. but it seems that there's a lack of leadership to solve them at the moment what's your take on that. well absolutely and you can judge that from not those who are present in davos this year but those who are absent from davos this year and that's basically the leaders of some of the countries some of the world's leading economies including the united states but not just the united states but also the united kingdom china india and so on and so forth so there's really a the absence of the of the world's leading economies is a testimony not only to

a slowing economy but there are crises today in those countries political and economic crisis as we know like the shutdown of the united states whether it is also the yellow vests in france and the up evils of the middle classes the terrible slowdown in china the worst since one nine hundred ninety political instability in india were of course more these facing somebody challenge after the original elections and so on so forth so everyone has problems on what is clear is that none of these and a lot of others want to show up and out of us and boast because really in the end of the day while that was might be a forum for some dialogue and and some you know effect of sort but in the end of the day it is a sort of you know top of the shoulder congratulating of the global elites that are proving to be more and more disconnected from the people around the world and we

mentioned earlier that globalization is is the theme of the forum this year how would you assess the state of globalization particularly that. this whole phenomenon of populism which is very much against that is. still very much apparent right now. well certainly the slogan of the war the canonic forum in terms of improving the state of the world is not only pompous it's proven since nine hundred seventy one to be far from anything like that in fact the leading problem in the world today after many were lifted out of poverty in china india brazil and other countries is rising inequality and that's the last place you will look for to read a result of that it's another thing that's becoming also a problem especially with the from administration being so present is of course the question of climate change so all i know there are huge problems facing the world
