confirmed dead that many hundreds missing some of those bodies will never be recovered under tons and tons of sludge which escaped from tailings dam much of that residue contaminated so the operation really to find the survivors any survivors to try to find any any bodies and then to try to stem the flow of this fix large and marje which threatens to be another enormous environmental disaster in terms of the trucks behind you john you're saying the government is moving its infrastructure in to help those that have survived and to find those that might still need help what sort of help is going in. the president has offered as much help as he can possibly muster there have been helicopters the scene very very quickly trucks are moving in i think in the initial stages it's really a case of trying to work out exactly the extent of the damage we know that there was something like twelve million liters of residue of mud and sludge from the

mining company in that dam much of that will have escaped so it's trying to assess just how serious that is the figures of people missing have range from anything from two hundred to three hundred fifty we know that about one hundred of them are probably workers of the mine having lunch at the ministration center near to where that. the dam itself was built in one nine hundred seventy six the company said that it was in good condition and they always tend to say that the workers environmentalist often say that there's not enough investment in maintaining the standards of these dams and they often say as they did in the mariana disaster in two thousand and fifteen they were warned it was a disaster waiting to happen and they're saying much the same in these initial stages about what looks like being another catastrophe here in mena shot ice for a moment will leave then of course follow events with you as you proceed closer to

the disaster zone thanks daniel let's cross over to adriano showrooms campaign if a greenpeace in brazil joins me via skype from san paolo good to have you with us live on al-jazeera before we get into the nitty gritty of who's to blame what's your reaction to the pictures that you are seeing how shocked are you that this sort of similar disastrous happened within four years. hello yes i'm shocked. there's no disaster we've there or tell us them this time improve much ino is said consequence of the lessons not learned by the brazilian government and the mining company is responsible for the tragedy with some market then in my idea and also controlled by find it so i'm devastated as environmental as president to see that this is happening i again just started three years of course once i have seen ready and indeed it seems to involve the same company so very serious questions have to be asked about what lessons were learned from the first disaster and why
9:56 pm
we're seeing a very similar one again exactly the lessons definitely weren't learned and somehow greenpeace as other environmental organisations have been alerting for instance the lead they lose in the name of the environmental license which would have worn it would mean creating a factory of my idea and as importantly sings my idea no we haven't we do not have all the al sows we do not have appropriate trust piracy and what we've been listening from the new government and even we've had a lot of lobby from finding companies is too quick to be lies to make fast tracking of a very mentalizing this is a perfect receive for a tried. case and now obviously we know there's a mining operation in that area but there are very large communities that rely on
9:57 pm
the land where this disastrous happened on on on on the environment itself in that area what do you know about the area and the way people live can you sort of color the picture for us about how reliant people are on the land. that's not the this is the presbyterian idea that the finitely is a social tragedy we still don't know exactly the proportion of the cost that close this. piece so what and this specifically in this area before. we went in might be and that not there were a lot of dumb unities much more people off like that directly because of the the. demand so. that this is the usual now that is concerning more than everything in the social tried to the losing the of many millions the sense of lives we still don't know they are talking about three hundred but they

still don't know in terms of the new president who's taken up office this is most probably his first and most important task and it will give the opportunity for brazilians to see how he deals with this not just now but in the in the weeks ahead . well definitely this is an opportunity for the new government and the president somehow change the recent statements that they've been doing which is to to and weave this patrick of fines and be it was on the environment he needs to position himself in the opposite direction than losing rules of environmental license which would have worn it many times that would create another tragedies as the one that we have seen the past and we are seeing at the moment we should see what the president does say. a new time show yes i'm sure you do want to

see more transparency and we'll see what the president has to say when he visits that disaster zone in the coming hours for the moment thanks very much i'm going to show route for joining us from sao paolo. security council is sent to meet in less than an hour to discuss the power struggle gripping venezuela the u.s. is likely to push the council to composition you know. has declared himself the interim president and he such move will be blocked by russia and china which back nicolas maduro germany france and spain meanwhile want fresh elections within a week or they like america will swing behind inside venezuela the two men continue to rally supporters latin america editor lucien human reports from kusa on the border between colombia and venezuela sam i think that act as an almost surreal scene two venezuelans speaking in the same city at the same time each claiming to be the country's legitimate president i it's a high stakes bet for one guy dog who was proclaimed interim president by the

opposition controlled national assembly on wednesday he's now calling on the military considered the deal breaker in this conflict to support regime change. why don't announce the approval of an amnesty law to benefit army members prepared to abandon me go last month a little while summoning venezuelans to take to the streets what about. those who think that we are backing down that district health gunned down have another thing coming to people who are going to be on the streets for as long as the tale of the war. but at the presidential palace the embattled president responded by making it clear he's not going anywhere. we will defeat the coup d'etat that intends to intervene in the political life through over.
