state even addressed the one hundred sixteenth congress to a close as you'd expect it was a wide ranging speech it began with the heels of the democrat controlled congress to put political divisions aside to the interests of the country to keep the economy infrastructure the middle investigation the budget the war in migration simply put walls war can born save lives he said it took in health care funding the cost of prescription medicines north korea there's to be a summit between president trump and kim jong il and in vietnam on the twenty seventh and twenty eighth of february. he touched on venezuela isis iraq afghanistan military spending and iran plenty to talk about we have steve plamann standing by for us in washington d.c. he's the washington it's a washington that is a launch for the atlantic will come to steve in a while but also watching that speech al-jazeera white house correspondent kelly health who's on capitol hill kimberly that come to you first what do you make of it
6:31 am
. i think you could look at this speech in kind of four parts the first one is the president's effort to recognition that this is a very divided nation and so there was quite a lengthy bit at the beginning where there was this effort to reach out and try to appeal for unity among his a very divided congress one that it should know now is reflected by the fact that this is controlled by democrats the president talking there that this nation he believes needs to be gart governor as two parties as stead one nation but what was really interesting in all of this is that even as the president was calling on his political opponents to kind of project. the politics of revenge of resists he was also issuing a bit of a veiled threat to them essentially what he was saying there with respect to talking about the ongoing probe into whether or not there was collusion between downturns presidential campaign and russia he sensuous called this
6:32 am
a ridiculous partisan investigation and then said if there's going to be piece of legislation under the words i'm going to sign your laws that you pass here in congress there cannot be war and investigation so it was of our moment where the president was essentially calling for unity but also saying and if you don't give me what i want to have not going to cya your legislation to last so that was a little bit unusual and the president also spent an awful lot of time talking about the one issue that has really divided this country in the last thirty five days we saw that government shutdown of course and then the fact that we're in ten days away from short term funding running out once again over this issue of the border wall along the southern border of the united states and mexico the president did sort of characterize this is a moral issue saying that he felt that many democrats simply were not taking a reflecting the priorities of the american people in terms of safety talking about
6:33 am
how this was an increase in crime as a result of illegal immigration and really being very productive in the language essentially pointing out a fact that is true in the past many democrats have voted for a wall along the southern border of the united states and mexico but he the way he characterized again was not perhaps very unifying he said that wealthy of political donors push for open borders while living lives behind walls gates and guards is so that was very provocative i think the last part that we sort of need to look at in all of this is the issue of national security or how he characterized his foreign policy i think that was pretty significant not only did he tell what he believes were some of his successes particularly when it comes to north.
