on the brink. with two men facing off for power. one of them self proclaimed interim venezuelan leader. to al-jazeera. this is al-jazeera. hello once again from doha everyone i'm come all santa maria and this is the news hour from al jazeera ready to go humanitarian aid from the united states arrives in colombia waiting delivery to the venezuelan people. also thailand's king says his sister doesn't have his backing in an unprecedented move by a member of the royal family to stand for election as prime minister and decision
9:01 pm
day the white house must respond to congress within hours on whether to sanction saudi officials for the murder of journalist jamal khashoggi in sport ten people have died in a foreign one of preserves most famous football clubs the place happened flamingos youth team training center in rio de janeiro. so venezuela's president nicolas maduro says that u.s. backed humanitarian aid arriving at the border of his country should be distributed to the poor of colombia instead his troops are under orders not to let through my dura says the venezuelan opposition is weaponize an aid in using it as a provocation but help is needed for millions of people living in poverty health systems collapse madeira blames u.s. sanctions his opponents though accuse him of mis management well the number of people who fled venezuela now stands at three million those who remained. during

some desperate conditions as to raise a birth she gained exclusive access to a hospital were at least fourteen children have died from contaminated water in the past week. this is the producer tricks emergency room at the louis the hospital in the venezuelan city of. about three hundred kilometers east of us here dozens of children are in desperate need of proper treatment most of them have been diagnosed with a more b.s. is a form of dysentery transmitted by contaminated food or water lady check on stall to reality is three months old she suffers while her mother says she has been abandoned the out of air my daughter has diarrhea she almost had a heart attack we have nothing you arrive here and there is nothing i was in a crisis because i thought i was losing her children here have diarrhea with blood in it and they are vomiting but nobody is helping us i want this government out now it has destroyed us. we were allowed to film because staff here say they want the
9:03 pm
world to see that they are unequipped to save children's lives just this week fourteen children have died the figures could climb you can see how desperate the situation is here there's several children and each one of this very people are telling us that there's no medicine and there are not enough syringe is among other things many of the children that are arriving here are dying from one day to another madeline in my teen years baby boy was one of them he was two months old on tuesday night he died he's forty remains in the hospital because she hasn't been able to get together the money needed to buy a coffin in the didn't but i don't i don't live there is nothing here they have no medicines they don't have food and now my son as did. people who believe the outbreak was cost when a switch by broke and contaminated the local water supply there was no chlorine or
9:04 pm
other chemicals in supplied to treat the water parents with their children continue to line up for treatment staff at the hospital say they don't have the resources to help. with any of them here three years ago we stopped receiving goals and alcohol there are not enough syringes or serums to hydrate children. the government of president. denies there is a humanitarian crisis in venezuela however he recently announced he is reforming the country's health care system. this is a public company recovered by the revolution because while it is going to produce all the medicines made for its public health care system and social security we can reach everyone like it should be and socialism. the situation in the hospital is one of the reasons why the self declared entering precedent of venezuela one way though says humanitarian aid is urgently needed but some aid officials advice if it
9:05 pm
does a rival it needs to be carefully managed. it didn't work on the work of humanitarian aid is a mechanism that every country has it's a mistake to make politics out of this there are great needs in venezuela and it has to be controlled managed by the united nations and other agencies so it reaches those who need it. a crisis that has people at this hospital watching and hoping that their children will survive. but of venezuela we've got with us now who is a former senior venezuelan diplomat at u.n. security council level he's joining us from new york first of all this idea that president is saying the age should be given to people in colombia that's quite extraordinary that seems to be actually ignoring the fact that there is a humanitarian crisis regardless of the politics. thank you thank you so
9:06 pm
much i must tell you it does not surprise me because since two thousand and seventeen we have been denouncing this humanitarian crisis and actually i had the opportunity to denounce it to the i.c.c. and to be a witness to the oas a panel independent panel for crimes against humanity in order to appreciate the money chewed of this situation it is a crime against humanity to act and induce imposing a humanitarian crisis to remain in power they have been weaponized starvation and medicine scar city for at least two and a half three years where more than half a million people have already perish infants are newborn children are already born under starvation and dying and more than eighty percent of the mothers after them we have more than seven million people on their starvation three million people
9:07 pm
eating from the garbage cans it is not only a failed proxy mafia state but it's inhumane to make muck of the needs of the venezuelan population that have been no press by this totalitarian regime have you go any theories as to why why what ok let me put it this way we know nicolas maduro we know his side the leadership we know he wants to hang on to power it's how he operates but why puts all of that above the welfare of the people who you say supports you. well certainly it's first of all it's a self-inflicted economic meltdown for their own interests of grand corruption so after that happened they have utilize his social control and political control on their they homeland card is that c.t.e. chinese card is
9:08 pm
a digital called that he's used to monitor the actions of the people that he wants to control for his electoral purposes for the rest it's complete political opera tide so it's a management of their resources in order to men saying control and to keep their regime in power so now under the new administration over our interim constitutional president one way though he has requested as this suffering president he has requested the international community to bring international humanitarian aid and of course it seems as you've noted is that they've blocked the entrance of the humanitarian aid and i think that this is aiming possible humanitarian international intervention with military support to be able to protect the civilian population in venezuela let's talk about that aid at the border it's
9:09 pm
obviously very much needed but i mean how far can that even go that amount that is there if it were to cross through tomorrow let's say this is a bigger problem than that isn't it and one of wide or whoever were to take over eventually as president would have a huge job turning it around well the interim president one way though has. tend all the golden bridges also offered amnesty through a law passed in our national assembly now it's on the side of motherhood zero to keep ga slighting danger national community and not providing or allowing first of all to step down and allow the legitimate government to. enter their humanitarian aid and to have this transitional government to put order in an already okupe territory by at least forty percent of the territory is under
9:10 pm
eleven far and hezbollah so we have this failed proxy mafia state with international ties to international terrorism that has not allowed the international humanitarian aid to enter the country to relief millions of venezuela they're a distressed and starving quick word on the military because it's the military control and whether that aid comes in or not do you foresee a moment where the military is in siding with president maduro yes i believe at least eighty percent of the military made medium and low ranges are suffering the same consequences as a civilian population but you we have to remember that as we speak at least a thousand political prisoners have are being tortured at least two hundred military prisoners are also being arbitrarily detained and forty four people have
9:11 pm
been shot in the face and he did genitals so we're talking about is a very difficult situation also for the military that would like to step out because their their families are also under distress and also probably threatened but i do believe they would do the right thing and they would stand by the constitution and by our interim president juan y.-o. and allow the international humanitarian aid to come in. dana joining us from new york thank you so much for your time do appreciate it. on friday the deadline passes for president trying to tell congress if sanctions will be imposed over the murder of saudi journalist. part of the so-called magnitsky act which gives the u.s. president a hundred twenty days to investigate and determine if foreign government officials
9:12 pm
committed human rights violations as part of the inquiry trump is expected to send a report to a group of sentences outlining whether sanctions are justified despite a cia assessment linking the saudi crown prince to murder trial has continued to support muhammad's. and whatever the president's response it will likely be seen as an indication of whether his administration is willing to hold saudi arabia and more specifically the crown prince accountable. at the white house to talk us through this one number one thing kimberly does the u.s. does the trump administration actually have to abide by this deadline. it doesn't have to at least that's how it is being interpreted by this white house it appears given the fact that these are co-equal branches of government the white house and the congress the congress has requested that the white house supply this information but it the l indications are at least at this hour the white house is
9:13 pm
not going to comply with that request even though it has been triggered on the global make its key act so we'll get to in a second what congress intends to do but for now i can tell you we had hoped that we would hear from the president directly about an hour ago he left on marine one to go for his annual physical at walter reed medical center he avoided reporters' questions on this issue we did press the deputy principal white house press secretary hogan gidley about this i asked him if the white house was going to respect this deadline that is imminent he said simply i don't know we're left looking at the information that came out of the state department on thursday from the spokesperson there actually saying that they share the deep concern and outrage over the death of jim hoffa shows he the murder of shit off they have consulted with congress and then they referred us to the actions that were taken in a river of twenty eighteen namely the seventeen individual say actions or sanctions put on seventeen individuals i should say block their assets under u.s.
9:14 pm
jurisdiction beyond that all the state department spokesperson would say is that the troubled ministrations continuing to engage with congress it doesn't really give the appearance that the white house's plan to do anything more than that ok you quite often and rightly remind us kimberly about the co-equal branches of government in the united states and that they do have fear a sickly the same amount of power is that very much the case here we know what congress wants to do but without cooperation from the white house can it be effective. well the white house directs policy but in terms of the financing of that policy that is the sole responsibility of the u.s. congress so here's where congress can flex its might and muscle and where it is already doing so what we've already seen is a bipartisan group of senators that means democrats and republicans and this is exceptional because this is a very divided nation right now they have almost near you now to many. are on the
9:15 pm
issue of how they feel the white house has not gone far enough in terms of holding the highest levels of the saudi government responsible for the killing of a hush oshie these are lawmakers have been briefed by the intelligence agencies they are conclusive they point to the crown prince so what they have done is introduce bipartisan legislation known as the saudi arabia accountability and yemen act of twenty nineteen what this would do it would hold saudi arabia accountable for the murder of. and for the role of saudi arabia in yemen something of course the conflict there being called a humanitarian disaster by the united nations now this has to make its way through congress it does have to be signed by the president but what this would do if it was signed into law is it essentially would prohibit the arms sales from the united states from going to saudi arabia and also would limit u.s. military support in that conflict for example in aerial refueling which has been
9:16 pm
something that's occurred in the past so what it appears is that the trumpet ministration in the eyes of congress really has no intention of going any further in terms of accountability so that's where congress is stepping in and doing what it can do thank you kimberly how could slide outside the white house there now all of this as a report in the new york times that the saudi crown prince threatened to go off to jamal khashoggi and twenty seventeen according to the report mohamed been someone told an aide he would use a bullet against the journalist if he didn't return home and his criticism. of the kingdom a conversation intercepted by u.s. intelligence agencies we are hearing though that the former foreign minister of saudi arabia has been in washington now the deputy foreign minister and has rejected those claims made by the new york times making those comments in washington today. also still more on shoji actually the
9:17 pm
fiance of jamal khashoggi has called for more international support into the investigation into his murder was speaking a day after the special rapporteur agnes kalama revealed the initial findings of her investigation chilling gruesome audio material given to her by turkish officials and she accused saudi arabia of seriously undermining the investigation stephanie deca with more on that from istanbul. that initial statement from the united nations special rapper ter is a damning while i think it indicates that what we're going to hear in june or the end of may when she presents her findings to the human rights council could be very significant because of course she is the only one who is not politically motivated in this it is such a politically loaded story ms cullum have is the only real independent voice looking at the bigger picture now we've also heard from mr fiance changes she's published a book or she's dictated the story to two editors we attended
9:18 pm
a press conference that she was at this is the first time really that she faces the media and takes questions since the murder of her fiance four months ago and this is what she had to say. she should be no announcement no sanction nothing that is imposed will bring back jamal was saluted but in a way it's important in terms of relief even a little bit for those who loved and supported him those who committed this magic get punished and for those responsible to be trite this is what we request she also highlights that perhaps this congress could perhaps take more accountability as to what happened to her fiance but really the bigger picture is that she's still really stressed that she wanted to be able to find the body to be able to bury him and to be able to allow his loved ones to have a place to pray for him i think it highlights again for months all of them with all the political back and forth of this looted story is that there is still no answer
9:19 pm
as to who ordered the killing even though the u.n. has been pretty clear that this was or that the highest levels of the saudi government and of course his body the body of mr zuma has still not been found. here is what's coming up for you on this news hour why the world's richest man is accusing the u.s. tabloid of blackmail digging deep the desperate rescue attempts to reach people trapped after avalanches in the himalayas and sport she smiling through the pain we will hear from skiing great lindsey vonn there in the final race of the. king says it is inappropriate and unconstitutional for his sister to stand as a candidate for prime minister in next month's elections the surprise announcement that she's running came earlier despite the royal family historically staying out of politics when he has more from bangkok. the politics in thailand can be volatile
9:20 pm
and unpredictable this revelation took it to another level changing the political landscape. today i with other time party leaders have submitted the name of a nominate a prime minister for the party who is princess. cityward in a. straight away it all to the dynamics of the election campaign in a country that's been politically divided for years that. is a big advantage over all the other parties and you know the other candidates most likely would not want to be seen running down the. princes relinquished a royal title in one thousand nine hundred ninety two after she married a foreigner but is still regarded as a princess and part of the royal family she's now divorced features regularly in royal ceremonies and is also a singer and actor appearing in two movies making this move particularly intriguing
9:21 pm
is that the party she's joined is backed by former prime minister taksin it's you know what he was removed in a coup in two thousand and six and lives in exile he's always been seen as anti establishment and has been accused of wanting to change the political structure of thailand by reducing the power and influence of the monarchy this is the official launch of the election campaign which was completely overshadowed really by the announcement just before it began from the thai rocks a chant party it's an announcement that has big implications on the campaign the election and potentially the formation of the next government technically the princess is not covered by thailand's strict laws designed to protect the monarchy from criticism but the law is broad and open to interpretation and abuse campaigning against could lead to a jail term the announcement is being seen as a setback for the man who led the two thousand and fourteen coup current prime minister. also on friday he became the prime ministerial candidate for approved military power. that means he now has to run against a member of
9:22 pm
a royal family he's sworn to serve and protect as an army general his party says the nomination of the princess may violate the election law because it brings the royal family into politics there's a sense the move by thai rocks a charge could go either way towards political reconciliation or more polarized nation wayne hay al jazeera bangkok well a few hours ago before we had the reaction from the king in thailand we were speaking to the man on screen now anthony nelson who's the director of the east asian pacific practice at albright stonebridge group a so thank you for coming back much appreciated to talk about interesting development what do you make of what the king said it's. in a way it's sort of understandable from his perspective but it really throws another spanner in the works. well it's an absolutely stunning turn of events. most observers simply didn't expect this because it didn't seem it would be
9:23 pm
possible that the princess would make this decision without clearing it with the palace in advance particularly since there were rumors circulating all week that this might happen so either the palace attempted very quietly to make clear they didn't like this one the princess ignored it or the king a knish really approved this and then changed his mind or there simply was no communication whatsoever but either way it's a really shocking turn of events and it leaves one of these significant talks and linked parties likely with no prime minister candidate to nominate because the deadline has now passed and means the spotlight turns back to. a tie and some of these more traditional opposition leaders but there's no doubt this introduces a real element of chaos and uncertainty into the as you mentioned tuckson as in former prime minister shinawatra and his political affiliations how
9:24 pm
important are they still inside politics in fact does this whole episode still prove that they are still very important. well talks in linked parties have won every democratic election in thailand since two thousand and one or so and i think most people expect that toxins parties will take the largest share of the vote in this coming upcoming election now because of the heavy restrictions built into the constitution that provide a big advantage to the military led candidate it will be very hard for them to outright win enough to take control of the government but they still are expected to be an enormous factor and even if they don't. secure the premiership they will still be able to have a huge voice in legislative affairs in passing budgets and other issues so they remain tremendously important the big question was whether this move by the
9:25 pm
princess signified a kind of rapprochement between the toxin linked elements and the monarchy but now it seems with the king's announcement that perhaps that has not happened i know we're in really on child's a territory at this point but do you think this is potentially enough to put these elections off again i mean been waiting years for this to happen it feels like it's such a momentous thing it might be the kind of thing which could could postpone the mcguigan . i would be extremely surprised if they make the decision to postpone them again they've been working towards these elections for quite some time. the current government has been absolutely adamant that they will take place this time there was already a kind of banner thrown in the works by the king's announcement of his coronation but from what everyone understands the king really does want an election to take place before his coronation so i i would expect it's fairly unlikely that this
9:26 pm
completely derailed. the elections once again but of course in thai politics you never know what's going to happen next year anything goes right and that is so much thank you so much for your time do appreciate you coming back to talk us through these developments. now two palestinians have been killed by israeli army fire during protests at the gaza border fence one was the fourteen year old son cheveley was reportedly shot in the abdomen this happened near new units at least seventeen other palestinians have been injured people in gaza are of of course been protesting at the border each friday for almost a year calling on israel to lift the siege and blockade morocco's suspended its participation in the coalition's battle against the rebels in yemen the moroccan government is also recalled its ambassador to saudi arabia pressure has been mounting on the coalition to end its assault on yemen the level of morocco's participation in the war there has not been clear. there's also
9:27 pm
a report from unicef which is highlighting the dire situation for children in yemen just look at these numbers more than six thousand seven hundred children have been killed or injured since the war began and twenty fifteen also found three hundred ninety four thousand children are suffering from acute malnutrition and are in need of urgent treatment and maybe three thousand yemeni boys have been recruited by armed groups the fighting has resulted in three quarters of the entire population needing humanitarian aid and still in yemen the lives of cancer patients in the port city of data are being made worse by the fighting the world health organization says thirty five thousand yemenis have cancer eleven thousand a diagnosed every year but increasingly cancer clinics are closing bremer has more . this should be a weekly visit for how who has jo cancer instead she comes for treatment once a month not only does she have difficulty speaking the drive to the hospital is
9:28 pm
made hazardous by fighting her nephew explains. the distance from our village was sixty four kilometers but now it's one hundred seventy the previous road used to be easier it was paved but now it's completely destroyed. the road linking a day that had been closed since last september now it's on the control of the saudi immorality led coalition which limits the difference of medical and food supplies to the city so a man irony in his life due to the complete siege on yemen and the siege and her data the patient situation is getting worse due to the lack of medicine difficulty of transportation and the extreme poverty of these patients which eventually will lead to losing the progress we achieved in treating some of the cases. with increasing numbers of diagnosed patients in the terry orating security conditions and the only cancer treatment center which is nearby for patients and for day there and the surrounding areas. it's only open two days
9:29 pm
a week and has one doctor to treat all these patients the other doctor was forced to leave the city because of the war. we have five thousand six hundred patients who need serious care we might not be able to continue taking care of these people if there's no support we are exposed to the possibility of being shut down soon as we don't have the operational budget nor the cost of treatment. for now these yemenis can only wait with no idea where that this treatment center will be here next time they need it now that brame algis here still ahead on your news our longing for a more liberal iran we're talking to a generation that's only known life since the one nine hundred seventy nine revolution and in sport the l.a. lakers leave it later the boston celtics andy is here with that and the rest of the sports on the select.
9:30 pm
hello there we've got plenty of wet weather across the middle east at the moment the latest area of cloud makes its way up from pass' saudi arabia and up through parts of iraq and iran and we're seeing some rain and some snow out of that system and it's still going to be with us as we head through saturday and into sunday as that works its way eastwards and sort of fizzled out we're still going to see a residual area of cloud and rain across the eastern coastline of the mediterranean so here they could be quite a lot of rain particularly over the western coast of syria i think that's where we'll see some of the heaviest of the falls over the next couple of days even further towards the south and that system is also affecting us here in doha so lots of cloud over post saudi arabia the chance of seeing a few showers there over parts of iran and also q eight as we had three set today but on sunday the system just slips it a bit further towards the south as it does say we've got the chance of hearing the old rumble of thunder in riyadh and also here in doha and it does look like it's
9:31 pm
going to stay rather unsettled as we head through monday and into tuesday as well and we are looking at some wet weather towards the south we got a lot of weather here in the northern parts of stretching all the way across into the northern parts of madagascar we do also have this rather distinctive swell head that is a tropical cyclone but it's moving away towards the southeast and taking its violent weather with it. in the next episode of techno teen looks into the environmental impact of waste management trash is a big business and unfortunately the smelly business to the complexities of recycling with different plastics are together recycling becomes difficult possible and the science that has solution is very easy for us to have a hundred percent recycled material techno on al-jazeera.

the big breaking news story can be chaotic trying to behind the scenes. people shouting instructions and you're trying to provide the best most accurate up to date information as quickly as you can. it's when you come off air and being seen pinned that you realize this is history in the making. this is the news hour at al-jazeera these are the top stories venezuela's president nicolas maduro has described u.s. aid to the colombian porter as
9:33 pm
a cheap stunt the opposition is calling on the military to allow the millions of dollars of humanitarian aid into the country thailand's king says it's inappropriate and unconstitutional for its systems to stand as a candidate for prime minister in next month's elections a surprise announcement that principle. is running came earlier despite the world family tradition staying out of politics should be up against the current prime minister who got a military coup in twenty fourteen. and the saudi minister. in washington d.c. defending his government over the murder of jamal khashoggi in a few hours the white house is expected to announce its decision on possible sanctions. while middle east analysts now that hashimi told us a little bit earlier that he believes the saudi crown prince mohammed bin salman actually shows what he considers psychopathic tendencies. or i think the psychiatry would have a field day interviewing the saudi. crown prince he clearly has
9:34 pm
a fondness for bullets he clearly has a think a psychopathic personality and these are very bad days for the saudi crown prince within twenty four hours there has been two damning sort of developments the u.n. special investigator sort of is pointing the finger to the saudi crown prince but of course the new york times report that you mentioned suggests that according to american intercepts a year before jamal khashoggi was murdered he was talking about putting a bullet in his head and so these are difficult days for the saudi crown prince the official narrative is that when he came on to the scene that he was widely admired particularly by young saudis because he was offering change and there was a narrative that he had a popular base of support but i think it's important to understand that in an absolute monarchy in a regime that is clearly totalitarian it's impossible to know how much support it leader has these recent developments that have completely tarnished saudi arabia's
9:35 pm
reputation completely reveals the policies that the crown prince has been pursuing has to have undermined whatever support he previously. might have had saudi arabia's under a global scrutiny billions of dollars have been invested in trying to elevate the image of the saudi crown prince all of that has been flushed down the toilet because of these revelations related to jamal khashoggi so i suspect if there was a free and fair vote in saudi arabia today he would have a very difficult time you know winning majority support or it's clearly the latter and it's not really world leaders it's more donald trump i think one reason that explains the ongoing recklessness of which the murder of jamal khashoggi was just the last in a series of disastrous policies with it was his firm belief if that to the south by crown prince had donald trump in his corner in fact. there was
9:36 pm
a report where he bragged about having jared cushion or the close advisor son in law to the president in his back pocket so i think that what what has emboldened the saudi crown prince to produce these you know reckless policies at which the murder of jamal khashoggi was clearly the most brutal the amazon chief jeff bezos is accusing the publisher of the national enquirer of extortion and blackmail the world's richest man an owner of the washington post newspaper says the tabloid threatened to publish intimate photographs of him unless he drops his accusations that some of its reporting was politically motivated in a blog post bezos raised questions about american media incorporated or am i's relationship with saudi arabia am i the owner of the inquirer is a strong backer of president trump and although its denied its reporting was politically motivated it says it will investigate the allegations let's try to sort through all of this which she had pretends in washington d.c. is just there's so much in this she is. not just the argument between the newspaper
9:37 pm
and jeff bezos and self but it brings that white house relations it brings in russia or brings in saudi arabia. right it's pretty involved so buckle up. let me take you back to january jeff bezos announced his divorce in january shortly afterwards the national enquirer published its expose an eleven page spread detailing the affair that jeff bezos had was having with his mistress involving photographs and text messages bezos then lowish an investigation with his own security team into how the enquirer got those text messages was this part of some political conspiracy the washington post has since had read all tickle suggesting that maybe government agencies were involved we have no evidence of any of that but he launched this inquiry which according to bay's also in his blog post published on thursday night made the publisher of the national enquirer enquirer david peck an apoplectic with rage the national enquirer that he e-mails about his awesome
9:38 pm
says either you make it make a statement saying this was not politically motivated or we will publish more information about your affair including intimate photos and more text messages instead of capitulating to that bezos goes public with his blog post on the very night and he suggests as far as he's concerned that was a political conspiracy these are the key power grabs my ownership of the washington post is a complex for me it's unavoidable that certain powerful people who experience washington post news coverage will wrongly conclude i am their enemy president trump is one of those people obvious by his many tweets also the posts of central and unrelenting coverage of the murder of its columnist jamal khashoggi is on doubted lee unpopular in certain circles bezos points out that packer and trump have been close but he also mentions the saudis several several times he also alludes to a time when packer was looking for financing and done donald trump introduced peca
9:39 pm
to representatives of the saudi government and clearly that there is a suggestion that this is all part of a political conspiracy it's not there how far up it may go but it certainly led to a great deal of speculation here in washington have returned they thank you for all of that from washington that. let's look at iran now which is unveiled a new long range ballistic missile the announcement was made in an underground facility as part of celebrations marking the fortieth anniversary of the revolution it is a show of military strength off to the u.s. with journey from the iran nuclear agreement last year and imposed sanctions on iran so way are looking at this fortieth anniversary of the iranian revolution we've got the same bus ride that bus ravi live in tehran for us zain there is an entire generation now in iran which is only growing up during the rural parts revolution isn't that what have they been saying two years we close fortieth anniversary welcome all we've spoken
9:40 pm
to a number of people now everyone we've spoken to people of all ages say their biggest challenge is the economy the country's economy is in trouble it's seen a decline in recent months and and what we've heard from government leaders especially is as well as young people big government leaders in particular say one of the biggest problems they're facing is youth unemployment and it's something that they're trying to address as quickly as possible to slow what has been a brain drain of highly educated young people who are either unemployed or underemployed and are leaving the country to try to find jobs elsewhere now this is one of the problems one of the repeated issues that come up when we interview people and speak to people here in iran one of the other problems or one of the other things that we hear from many young people who are supporters of the clerical system of government is that they see the one nine hundred seventy nine revolution the islamic revolution that brought the current government into power as a referendum of sorts that the country of iran that iran should be run as an islam a country with the ideals of islam governing the rules that run the country there
9:41 pm
are also people that feel that the way in which the government interprets and administers those ideals as law they find that to be something that doesn't necessarily define them we met some of those people and here is their story. in dimly lit corners of to haunt young men and women play the blues stealing moments of freedom in private studios might be the closest they get to the big stage. even to damage your gigs and small cafes he says her band gets two songs in before security shows up to shut them down. for a female vocalist in iran it's not just that a woman singing in public is illegal society doesn't recognize my entire life i wanted to sing for me it's like breathing i can't do anything else but there's no
9:42 pm
