least of our colleague mahmoud to say and old journalist detained in a gyptian jails free mahmoud's and all his colleagues we stand for press freedom. oh. and live from here at al-jazeera headquarters in doha. welcome to the news aid with strings attached food and medicine destined for venezuela is talk at the border as nicolas maduro refuses to allow allow it into the country the u.s. donated aid was organized by the opposition and some see it as an effort to undermine the embattled president will have a live report from caracas also on the great what next in the murder investigation
6:01 pm
of president donald trump as ignored a u.s. congressional deadline to respond to the journalist killing is refused to blame the saudi crown prince but his secretary of state says those responsible will be held to account and it's a summit meant to focus on the plight of refugees but a lot of the talk at this weekend's african union summit in addis ababa has been about egypt's president. about to take over the leadership of the organization nearly six years after the a you suspended type. of people in haiti are calling on the president to step down off the accusations of corruption will tell you about the social media company and in minding accounts of it it's an on site you can get in touch with me on twitter. here with a news grid live on air and streaming online through you tube facebook live and at al-jazeera dot com thank you very much for joining us trucks loaded with aid from
6:02 pm
the united states have arrived at colombia's border with venezuela setting up a showdown between president nicolas maduro and u.s. backed opposition leader. missouri's refusing to allow the aid into the country says he is not ruling out authorizing us. yes intervention to force majeure a from power let's take a look at what exactly is in those eight tracks according to the u.s. agency there is enough food to feed five thousand venezuelans for ten days there are hygiene kits for seven thousand five hundred people including soap and toothbrushes they are nutritional supplements with six thousand seven hundred mom nourished children and also in the shipments high energy biscuits to feed ten thousand children for a month at speak to teresa bowles live for us in caracas bring us up to speed for us with the situation as far as this aid is concerned will it ever get into the country. well that's
6:03 pm
a big question what we know right now is that some trucks with aid have started to arrive to the border between colombia and venezuela most specifically to the city of us who are saying it's mostly sold nutritional and energy by bars some medicines among other things this is expected to help between five thousand and ten thousand people obviously not enough to help most of the venezuelan people who are struggling we also know for example that at the border between brazil and venezuela there's no information whether the food has started to arrive over they are but the opposition is saying that that would be one of the entering point we know that the bali vireo national guard which other security forces here have set up a checkpoint there not to prevent any type of aid from riving there but a local indigenous community set up another roadblock in order to demand that aid from being allowed into the country so definitely the humanitarian aid the possibilities of it entering the country is definitely going to spark tension because the government says that it won't come into the country because it is as it
6:04 pm
is expected and if they if they believe that it is a way that the united states has of intervening in venezuela and the other question of course terisa is whether this aids promise by the u.s. and canada will go enough will be enough to how the people in need in venezuela. well of the opposition is very sickly saying that this is a first ship and a first attempt to get that aid into the country of course the government says that it won't allow in what the opposition wants to do it for it to create a humanitarian corridor in order so that the aid reaches those who need it the most mostly three hundred thousand people whose lives are a desperate require we're just a few days ago we were in a hospital in the city of buffalo about three hours away from where we are right now where at least fourteen babies have died because of contaminated water this is according to doctors and nice have been treated treatable disease but the doctors
6:05 pm
that the hospital say that they don't have the medicines that they don't have the syrians just among so many other things so of course this is the first step the government is saying that this is not of this is just a political operation a political show by the opposition in order to stop lies the country and how do venezuelans feel about that precisely to reset the fact that their livelihoods their lives are in a way being politicized here in this crisis. well there's lots of politics involved in this whole operation for one way the law is a way of showing that he can achieve something bring into the country some type of relieve without having any real power because the cut the government i think control is a government of. a little what's at stake is that they're saying that venezuela is not a beggar that they don't need anybody's help that they have enough resources in order to cope with the ongoing situation what we've been seeing for example on twitter our government supporters are basically laughing at what the united states aid is
6:06 pm
going to look like saying that it's dehydrated beef among other things saying that in markets like this once there's food for everyone well in markets like this one there's lots of fruits lots of vegetables some eggs the big problem people tell us is that they cannot afford it because food has become too expensive because of hyperinflation without without a round look i minimum wage you can only buy four packs of eggs and that's why people are protesting and they have been protesting because they say that with their salaries they cannot feed themselves thank you for that to resupply reporting there live from venezuela's capital caracas to resubmit on twitter and if you've missed it on t.v. watch her excellent report on venezuela's health care crisis that she was just talking about there she visited as she mentioned a hospital in the city of boston on a three hundred kilometers east of caracas where fourteen children have died in the past week from contaminated food and water heartbreaking stories at al-jazeera dot
6:07 pm
com is where you can watch theresa bowles report let's now bring in our social media producer and a lot of the conversation online has also been about the fact that aid is being politicized in venezuela is crisis and there's a conversation every day coming out of venezuela and on is that one is right on the conversation on is mainly this time how the u.s. aid should be perceived as i said earlier volunteers in the coming border city of course have prepared a packets of venezuelans and they can see. flour lentils rice and cooking oil as well as personal hygiene items and that's despite president nicholas moves or raised refusal to accept that u.s. aid and in a tweet to madeira says the humanitarian aid is a show to humiliate us see says and pretend to justify a military aggression he says if you want help stop the blockade the persecution and the aggression towards venezuela also courting on the opposition to access sensibly and with common sense and all of that was in
6:08 pm
a tweet but also the other person that has been tweeting is that aid was requested by him and he has begun going around municipalities in venezuela to gather support for the aids in fact he even funked us congress speaker nancy pelosi for her support of venezuela's opposition and the humanitarian assistance and he resorted to twitter to do that while the u.s. national security advisor john bolton he dismissed calls for negotiations with president to door and what he has called his cronies as wise as time timing that were damaged or shown he will never because they're in good faith he says today's the one year anniversary of the failed dialogue in minot can republic as an example but this person who has been tweeting he actually disagrees with a sentiment saying venezuela needs the lifting of sanctions the end of minutes to threats and the return of billions of dollars that actually belong ceases to the venezuelan people and another person here's another surveillance show you a says the media peddle stories about venezuela refusing us while ignoring facts
6:09 pm
about a scene venezuelans national wealth and that just gives you an idea that there are people who are pro the u.s. interfering and those are our guests and we keep seeing that more and more and we want you to be in touch with us as well if you have any thoughts on this land a lot of people in touch with us about the situation in venezuela sarra a commentary on facebook from jennifer who says the situation in venezuela is the direct result of the legal sanctions all suffering has been created by. the oil hungry us another comment from yes seen also on facebook the people of venezuela capable of finding relevant solutions without any interference of external powers thank you very much for your comments you can keep them coming get in touch with us all the different ways to do that on the bottom right of your screen right now don't forget to use a hash tag a genius great. moving on to other world news not and it appears as if donald trump will not take any action against rabia for the murder of jamal khashoggi but one of his key advisers has suggested they will be consequences the deadline has passed
6:10 pm
for the u.s. president to tell congress whether he will impose sanctions on saudi government officials under the legislation called the magnates act trump had one hundred twenty days to outline any action he's previously said he doesn't want the shoji issue to jeopardize u.s. relations with saudi arabia mike hanna has more now from washington. president trump departs for his annual medical exam declining to on such shouted questions on any subject all indications are there will be no response to the deadline set by the senate following the murder of jamal khashoggi the senate sent a letter to president trump invoking the global magnitsky act which gave president trump one hundred twenty days to investigate the murder and impose sanctions against those responsible in a follow up letter to the senate asa president to specifically investigate any role the crown prince mohammed bin solomon o.m.b.'s may have played in the murder in
6:11 pm
b.s. the crown prince is a wrecking ball. they get complicit in the murder mystery shogi think he's crazy. i think he is dangerous and he has put the relationship at risk but president trump has steadfastly insisted the us solve the relationship is more important than establishing accountability for murder it's all about america first we're not going to give up hundreds of billions of dollars in orders and let russia china and everybody else have a it's all about for me very simple it's america first saudi arabia's senior diplomat continues to deny any involvement by the kingdom's leaders in the murder refusing to react to a new york times report that the crown prince is on record as saying he would use a bullet on jamal khashoggi the report dismissed as based on unknown sources and the following tweet posted on the saudi foreign ministry account we will hold who

are responsible for the death the push to account the question is what happens now the president has ignored the ultimatum the answer is simply nothing they are no punitive measures involved in this process which essentially relies on the good faith of all parties something the president's critics contend is absent in the white house but the stars not mean an end to the matter the question of accountability for jamal khashoggi is murder has rid bipartisan support in congress and the motion is agreed to and legislation seeking sanctions against saudi arabia and possibly the crown prince specifically is being widely discussed in both the house and senate mike hanna al-jazeera washington i live not to hide it here castro in washington for us heidi is a trumpet ministration doing anything to explain why they've missed istead line set by congress. fully the reason given by u.s.
6:13 pm
secretary of state mike pump a.o. in a letter that he wrote to congress on friday was that this was the president's discretion not to act pompei zero cited the powers protected in the u.s. constitution guaranteeing this and also presidents set by previous administrations he also noted that the trump white house continues its investigation of the show she murder all of this created by the response from senators robert menendez the ranking democrat on the senate foreign affairs committee said he was very disappointed by the lack of action from the white house in not meeting this deadline and that it shows that the white house in his words wants the show she murder to be forgotten now these arguments though may soon be moot because on thursday the senate introduced yet another bill under the sea act that now gives the white house thirty days to impose sanctions on anyone that the white house or
6:14 pm
term is to be responsible for ordering the events that led to the murder of jamal khashoggi this is yet another bipartisan bill with support from eleven senators from both parties including trump's biggest ally in the senate senator lindsey graham again it's a thirty day deadline from the time that this newly introduced bill will be passed if that indeed happens the u.s. intelligence services have concluded that the murder was premeditated and is highly certain that it was ordered by the crown prince which saudi arabia denies thanks for that. force in washington d.c. i want to bring in our senior political analyst to the news great for more on this story and i want to start off by reading to you a comment from one of our view is stuff on facebook who says the tragic story of the assassination of jamal high shoji is on its way to be forgotten do you go. with
6:15 pm
that is all likely to be swept under the rug or can the u.s. congress still apply enough pressure on the administration to yield something well let me tell you what the new york times said this morning in its the tauriel about this very particular question as if most of the new york times the new york times give out the whole of the tauriel just answering his question so i would refer him to that because i think they may give some very good argument they say. this this case mustn't go away mustn't die out and we will make sure that it won't work all way in a sense there is enough public pressure now in the united states there is enough media pressure in the united states and congressional pressure in the united states in addition to turkish pressure and apparently perhaps as of next week international pressure investigation into the case over about how can donald trump's hand be. forced on punishing the saudis specifically on donald trump again
6:16 pm
another comment here from from one of our viewers who says why is john putting saudi money above the matter of a u.s. president is this about money at the end of the day what of course i mean state interests and money is big and when you have a real estate mogul like president trump yes money is an issue and there's nothing to shout to shy away from it because president trump has boasted of the fact that he puts american economic interests first and the moral questions after but that doesn't mean that person from will get away with everything because i mean look what we're having here fully almost almost every day every day either the wall street journal the washington post the new york times or some other publication comes out with some scandal or some new angle into saudi arabia into its arrogance in its four leads into its misgivings misdoings into mohammed bin

solomon's excesses whether in the middle east or beyond the middle east so not a big goes by without this thing gathering gathering some movement of sort gathering steam of sorts i don't think it's going to go away it's not on think it's in a dial yet you say the the year not a day goes by without a new revelation and yet we still don't have a special request from. turkey to the united nations asking for an independent international investigation into the matter of jamal khashoggi what are the turks waiting for exactly according to the turkish foreign minister they were waiting for other countries to come through and that they will according to the foreign minister they will be asking for officially for an investigation by the united nations but just to put the you know sort of a in brackets i don't think and i think it's very important the united nations investigation it's very important to internationalize this issue but i think as you
6:18 pm
were stated earlier i think the pressure needs to be on the top administration because in the end of the day who can move the so the saudis on this question who can put enough pressure on saudi arabia some people argue no one can control that the crown prince well if anyone can control the progress it can have to be international slash american pressure or mohamed than some all right thank you very much for that marlon very good to get your insight on this story as always marwan bashar is our senior political analyst you can find him on twitter at marwan bashar and don't forget we've got all the latest developments on the jamal khashoggi case on our special page at al-jazeera dot com all the latest news on then the news lines analysis and discussions al-jazeera dot com. president abdel fatah is about to take over the reins of the african union on sunday and amnesty international fears this could undermine the organization's commitment to human rights in a press release a wry scoop expressed concern over the potential impact is chairmanship could have

a mystery another international force is the root of over and yet you were in egypt recently adam om what does handing over the presidency of the organization to a controversial man like abdel fatah see say about the african union as an organization and where do you see him taking the african union during this next year as is leading the organization. i have visited egypt recently as you sit for me. i went to cairo i went to the shuttle mission i think the summit said that and to be honest i was impressed by the money to the of changes to the want economy clee of the economy investment if rest of just the country is the number one ford and better investment destination today. so do you see something that important and many different companies mcdonough afternoons then three full of attack going to

africa to be investment that i know is what is something that will be grid from leadership but as you see because this is a different companies with the best billions of dollars at present what does it what what does legal front bring those sorry to interrupt you because i know that egypt along with you know other heavyweights of the african union south africa and nigeria have no not to want a powerful african union so what can we really expect of cairo's tenure to fall could to focus on and now we're going to see a shift in the a use priorities in twenty one thousand. some of the characters we've always given them peace and second it would be that they didn't really meant that diplomacy that's the effect the twentieth but the african you want to focus on they want to find money to raise their capacity to fund the budget of the organization it's almost eight hundred million dollars that is eighty percent funded by outside sources they want to fund it from external sources live it drew with the rest of

the words you were taught us a lot of the trade they have taken from the international community partners and also their fortune to believe this. trade. these all across africa that distributing food limited that the bottom line when it comes to democracy and good governance those are very important priorities but i do believe that they will be addressed at the top and that are african devant we didn't place it like sell it out or money or could do far or names of. death another is to look for something that would be addressed you don't expect the african union to be given free rein to others those issues it has never been the case they have never been able to accept from developing a military coup makers now have done the african union summit or events do pretty good but i think that is all that that we have to fight anybody that is playing against the rule of law and democracy including in egypt and you can see they have
6:24 pm
to define what is their problem to not expect the african union to put it under i do believe that i.c.c. would be a detriment and be that trying to be very pragmatic instead of trying to play really the revolution the person who would bring democrats into governance across africa thank you for sharing your views with us adam again live with us from the car in senegal thank you very much now if you get a chance read this accuracy and piece by toughie maka on al-jazeera dot com he calls the african union an exclusive club for brutish task wants he believes that while africa should resist. political machinations it should still stand up to despotic african leaders a very interesting piece it's on al-jazeera dot com now this year's african union summit in ethiopia will largely focus on refugees and internally displaced people this report from. i share a sunni was thirteen years old when she says government forces attacked her village in sudan seven years on things have picked up she plays volleyball every week at

justice there is still a high you know division between the rich and the poor in iran we have around half of the iranian population living around the poverty line and there is a new ruling class basically running the country not with the crown but with a turban and when it comes to more political liberties also the picture looks quite bleak there is still a lot of human rights violations political repression there is a there is a debate in iran a political debate that is vibrant this is true so this is quite an improvement viz a viz the error of the shah but nevertheless the entire political system remains restricted to a variety of different islamist forces and other forces that say the nationalists or social democratic forces are quite excluded from political participation as we've seen from from the reports by various teams on the ground a lot of economic dissatisfaction. there's

a lot of hardships who do iranians today blame for the situation that they find themselves in i think we have a different picture than during the bush administration the years where we've seen a rallying around the flag in fact in iran where the iranians have basically blamed u.s. sanctions and u.s. policies for their economic situation but now i have the feeling and you can also see that from various protest slogans that the iranians have started to really blame their own government overwhelmingly for the economic situation and what do they make briefly of that country's involvement outside of iran in conflicts like syria yemen what do what do we rein in is make of that country's position positioning externally in this office that this again can be i can refer to the protests logans again so there have been a lot of proto slogans leave syria leave you know other places in the region and cope with us so there is growing realisation about what is in what iran is doing in

the region and there is the sense that you know the regime is basically spending the money that is should be for the people inside but for outside adventures and ambitions very good to talk to you about this thank you so much for coming into the news great a toll on a shot from the brookings doha center here with us to talk about the fortieth anniversary of iran's islamic revolution and there's an excellent film on al-jazeera dot com looking at the events that triggered the homan a movement then led to iran's islamic revolution in one thousand nine hundred eighty nine watch iran one nine hundred seventy nine and not to me of a revolution by clicking on the special series tab on our website at al-jazeera dot com. i let's not take a look at some of the other stories making headlines around the world this hour and a thai opposition party has bowed to pressure from the king to reverse its nomination of his sister her prime minister in a palace statement king corn described princes as bad for office as in appropriate

princess being on the ticket for prime minister that was even before the king statement so we know we'll get some possible clarity maybe some answers on monday morning when the election commission meets but we're also hearing because the king had mentioned that this is unconstitutional and other parties saying it was illegal the constitutional court might also become involved on monday so these meetings happening monday morning will hopefully give some clarity as to what's going to happen moving forward. in other news syrian kurdish forces say they will begin their final battle to push out of the last remaining pockets in the country's north more than twenty thousand people have been evacuated elsewhere according to local media a u.s. led coalition air strike on iso controlled areas has killed three civilians in the east this happened after the armed group launch an attack near a u.s. military base kurdish lead as the air force is supported by the u.s. then fought back near the country's largest oil field in derry's sore a canadian man who killed six people and injured five others at
