eight hundred fifty passengers but airlines found they couldn't fill all seats on the a three eighty s. the cost of maintenance and operations also exceeded initial estimates. well. al-jazeera is economics editor and he joins us now live in our studio and that what's been behind this me of by emirates so let's look at some of the numbers behind here because that's where the real economics of this is and this is a reason why it all falls apart if you're buying a a three eighty it cost you four hundred fifty five million dollars that's a heck of a lot of money now if you're buying a seven for seven it's four hundred million but that's such a small difference in the huge in the airline industry but if you take a look at this now to fly a three eighty it costs twenty nine thousand dollars per hour to fly a seven three seven which is used by most low cost airlines it costs nearly three

thousand dollars an hour so you can see it's like a tenth of the cost and so airlines are looking at. the bottom line and saying you know how can we make the math work on this to fly it's a three eighty you have to have sixty to seventy percent of the plane fall at any given time otherwise you're going to be flying at a loss now it's been lost making for airbus as well and after spending fifteen billion dollars developing this plane this is one monumental a disaster for them in terms of their business model so they're getting rid of this particular plane it's got huge competition for more efficient planes one they build themselves which is the a three fifty which emirates will buy and the other is the boeing seven eight seven both are kind of composite plastic planes and so they're more efficient in terms of the amount of fuel they use but even at times when the fuel price was extremely low airlines were reluctant to invest in this particular

plane because they couldn't see the point because most of most airlines they like to fly point to point so if you want to fly from london to say. to milan you want to go directly there's no point in you going from london to say. katz or anywhere else and then fly him back so the whole idea is that the airlines want to use smaller planes which can help you to go from point to point and it makes it easier to fill them with passengers presumably and and cheaper to run absolutely and this has been a huge cost to airports as well because. heathrow airport spent four hundred fifty million pounds trying to build up the infrastructure from improving the runways from wide. taxiways so that basically they could use this plane ok thanks very much for that avid and i'm sure we'll be talking to you about this throughout the day thank you at least twenty seven members of iran's

in fact as one republican noted democrats didn't seem concerned when the previous president began helping the bombardment of a country that would have been nice if our friends were equally concerned with president obama actually was committing us the kinds of activities we're talking about but things have changed and if anything anger has grown on capitol hill for several reasons the white house's refusal to meet a congressional deadline to definitively conclude whether crown prince mohammed bin salman was responsible for the killing a new york times report that revealed u.s. intelligence had intercepted a phone call in which the crown prince threatened to put a bullet into the journalist reports that despite having been officially fired as a result of his role in the killing of south alcatel he remains a close aide of the crown prince and the report that u.s. weapons supplied to saudi arabia have ended up in the hands of al qaeda fighters in yemen but it was seen as a split between conservative and progressive democrats the republicans did manage

talks to succeed though there has to be some goodwill on both sides both sides are trying to reach a framework of a deal that they can put to president xi jinping and president donald trump for them to sign but there are a number of sticking points for the united states it's the issue of verification making sure that china sticks to its word on what is agreed here in beijing i understand that the two sides are discussing a mechanism whereby tariffs would be automatically raised if china didn't keep to its side of the bargain now of course the united states has other complaints it believes that the way china does business is unfair many of its trade practices it wants reformed in particular the vast subsidies that the government gives to domestic companies here in china and of course there's also the issue of companies here in the united states who enter into joint venture arrangements with chinese
