9:00 pm
be a better place religion disappeared yes. i know and welcome to the al-jazeera news hour on live from doha with me elizabeth broderick coming up in the next sixty minutes truckloads of women and children leave the last remaining syrian stronghold ahead of its eminent. the president of pakistan a minister of. other there's a real risk of conflict with india after last week's bombing in the disputed region . a border tunnel project connecting italy and france as to what's being called the
9:01 pm
lowest point of diplomatic ties since world war two. and four years after nigeria's president promised to clean up this oil mess we'll look at whether failure will push his reelection. and i'm with all of your support the united states announce former world number two golfer steve stricker as their captain for the twenty twenty writer cup i'll have that and more if you later this news hour. dozens of trucks carrying women and children have been leaving the last remaining i still held pocket in east and syria the u.s. backed syrian democratic forces say they expect to recapture the village of the group within days it's believed there are about three hundred isis fighters there who are using civilians as human shields and holding them hostage imran khan has the latest from gaza that's near the turkish syrian border. at least ten trucks
9:02 pm
have left the alba whose village carrying women and children now the civilians have been a real concern for both the united nations and the syrian democratic forces in effect both the united nations on the center and democratic forces say i see a using those civilians as human shields now it's in ice was interesting keep the civilians there because it stops the s.t.'s from coming inside the village now the village most of it has actually been completely destroyed and the civilians and living in what is effectively tented camps in the outskirts of that village now given that they've now been able to leave yes the ethyl very confident they'll be able to go in and deal with isis fighters although the i suffices had a very long time to prepare for this fight they knew it was going to come at some point and they've asked to dig tunnels and what we're hearing is a lot of those are suffices in those tunnels so there's still be a very tough fight for the syrian democratic forces now as i say whilst all this goes on we still have the situation in iraq
9:03 pm
a bond camp on camp is controlled by the f.s.a. there is a no man's land effectively about fifty five kilometers before you get to these russian and syrian opened kori doors now these corridors so-called humanitarian corridors allegedly going to allow syrians in the camp mostly women and children to be able to go north however there's a real suspicion let's hear what a few people have sight to see the crossings opened by the regime and the russian military police are claimed to be safe but the people here are not feeling any safety or stability people here feel as if they are drowning and looking for anything at all to rescue themselves the road to the camp has become my original i am for me personally if i leave it would be army to go from one death trap to another and if i found a safe place from a my kids in my family i would guard finishing the game on the shot by putting the crossing is a good step but we wanted to be our the same by the un because i'm. lies we've been
9:04 pm
told before nobody believes these crossings are safe so despite the fact that there is a very desperate situation in the camp people are running low on food on oil. combination or water and they are living effectively on top of each other this is a very real suspicion of the russian and syrian motives and this although the window came to an end nine am this morning it was open for twenty four hours it's unclear whether the russians and the syrians will keep the corridors open for any longer. let's move on to other news now the trumpet ministration is facing an investigation into whether it's trying to sell sensitive nuclear technology to saudi arabia a bypass and legal norms a committee in the house of representatives led by the democrats says whistleblowers tipped them off with warnings that corporate interests are being pushed ahead of the north and the american people mike hanna reports from washington d.c. . the twenty four page report is extensive and reach in detail providing names
9:05 pm
dates and specific communications relating to u.s. nuclear technology in saudi arabia the oversight committee under representative elijah cummings based the report on what it calls whistleblower accounts evidence provided by career officials within the administration deeply concerned about what would appear to be a deeply corrupt process circumventing congress what is surprising us is the scope of u.s. government officials. directly involved and d.s. business to business talks. with out this close and potential economic interest in the work that they were doing and that is certainly what is new among those named in the report to president trump's son in law and adviser jared cushion or who refinanced a deeply indebted new york building with a company called brookfield business partners which had just acquired a nuclear services company westinghouse electric under scrutiny as well question
9:06 pm
his ongoing relationship with the saudi crown prince mohammed bin salman. and central to the report longtime trump supporter and one time national security advisor michael flynn who the report says was deeply involved in pushing a nuclear plan for saudi arabia that included the construction of as many as forty saudi nuclear plants the report says michael flynn was a paid advisor to a company known as i p three international during the presidential campaign through the transition period and even while serving as national security advisor the report ends on february the twelfth that is last week president trump participated in a white house meeting with private nuclear power developers initiated by i p three international and as a democrat led oversight committee commences
9:07 pm
a large scale investigation the question is whether house republicans will commit to it as well. washington. well this is the latest example of how the u.s. president sees his relationship with saudi arabia which is the first country donald trump visited after becoming president he's often talked about the importance of arms sales to sell the and says they're worth more than one hundred billion dollars despite growing anger over the sale of the emraan war in yemen trump as opposed congressional efforts to stop u.s. involvement in the conflict despite international calls for an investigation into crown prince mohammed bin sultan monts role in the murder of journalist. the us president says relations with saudi arabia mustn't be undermined and trump has ignored a one hundred twenty day deadline for a report on kushal murder requested by the senate the iranian foreign minister referred to kushal tweeting first a dismembered journalist and now illicit sale of nuclear technology to solve the
9:08 pm
arabia fully exposed u.s. hypocrisy let's get more on this now we're joined by mark fitzpatrick he spent twenty six years in the u.s. state department and is now the executive director of the international institute of strategic studies is joining us live from washington d.c. mr fitzpatrick always a pleasure to have you with us on our jazeera i want to talk more about what mohamed jobs every has been has been saying but before i do that as we mentioned what twenty six twenty seven years with the u.s. state department can you put what's in this report into context for us how usual or unusual the allegations in this report. these are very unusual because there is a clear legal obligation before selling any nuclear technology to get a congressional approval the administration submits a. request and then in ninety days if congress doesn't oppose and it goes through
9:09 pm
but no approval was submitted secondly there's an ethical clear ethical violation of individuals in the administration who stood to profit from it advocating policy and then there are the proliferation concerns of even selling nuclear technology to saudi arabia which has made it clear its intentions to have a nuclear weapons option so there are strong reasons to be very concerned about this report and i guess amongst those reasons those very strong reasons what mohamed jobs the reef has been saying is probably lower down you know what he calls hypocrisy the sort of optics of looking at selling nuclear technology to saudi arabia while pulling out of a mock do you to stop iran from developing nuclear weapons. yes i think that's also quite relevant and that's plays into the third important concern i raised about proliferation that the saudis have made it clear they want
9:10 pm
technology in order to have an option for nuclear weapons and it's the exact reason why the trump administration has been so harsh on iran because iran has had a similar nuclear hedging strategy there was a deal done to try to control it and blew up the deal so on the one hand. damning iran for adhering to a deal and giving a free hand wanting to give a free hand to the saudis who haven't agreed to any limits on their nuclear technology is a real yes it's hypocrisy and what could come out of this investigation how damaging could it be for the trumpet ministration and for the individuals who are implicated and as some of them have now left the administration. well so i think that bringing this to light really. makes it impossible that the
9:11 pm
congress would approve a nuclear technology transfer to saudi arabia but the way the law is now structured the congress would have to block it by a veto proof majority in order to prevent it from going ahead so there's still a chance that despite all this clearly an ethical behavior that a deal could still go through and it represents for the middle east and if the saudi arabia were to use technology for pursuing nuclear weapons would be horrible so you know i hope that the congress will be able to stop this deal or at least continue to investigate it and the trumpet ministration won't go ahead the raise some issues of legal concerns and yes but. if if the f.b.i. or the justice department were to bring suits against individuals who clearly violated ethical considerations i'm not sure that in the trumpet administration though the
9:12 pm
f.b.i. or the justice department would do that mr fitzpatrick thank you as always for your time and your expertise we do appreciate it that is mark fitzpatrick live in washington d.c. thank you. now the president of pakistan administered kashmir has told al jazeera that there's a risk of war with india after last week's bombing in the disputed region forty one and the in power military soldiers were killed in the suicide attack. has claimed responsibility well earlier we sat down with. we reject the allegations that the indian government has made and we all saw denounced the kind of frenzy that indian ruling party and the extremist groups have victor up there in india and the kind of anti pakistan and ticklish mute sentiment that they are weeping up there is a very very negative and this is pushing the two countries to the brink of war and
9:13 pm
we are against this kind of warmongering the other reaction that i want to give is that there is a bigger reality there is this incident of course and pakistan has denied any responsibility. but at the same time i would like to say that there is a bigger reality there and the bigger reality is that for the past seventy one jeers midis have been brutalized and about half a million views have been killed in the past. seventy one hears i think that the united nations secretary general and the united nations security council both must get involved and broker some sort of us deal between the two countries if you don't call it a deal in deed at least they should try to deescalate the situation because this is the responsibility of the united nations to remove any threats to international peace and security and there is
9:14 pm
a very serious threat to international and regional peace and security in the region well there is a security analyst and director of the society for policy studies in new delhi and he says world powers can apply pressure on pakistan to take action against those responsible for the attack. i think what india would expect from the global community is that the united nations security council ward prevailed upon pakistan to do whatever is expected in relation to the mamma and the leader of the group as i said muscled used to be listed by the un france is likely to move a proposal to the un security council very sore but we are aware that china has played a negative role in not allowing the listing of muscled so this is the indian expectation from the global community and if the un s.c. is able to i would a consensus i think that would help definitely in ensuring that baathist on
9:15 pm
complies with what the global community expects from me. how many kashmiris working and studying and other parts of india so they have been harassed threatened and assaulted since last week's bombing and many blame t.v. news channels and social media for stalking and violence has to mean reports from new delhi coming in from the tops of the suspect something was standing here they are working hand in us wishing that for our soldiers this is one of many videos posted on social media targeting anyone in india even suspected of being unpatriotic because mary's living in india have become prime targets with many telling stories of being harassed threatened and worse. or this kashmiri student was studying in an indian university when a local mob forced him and other kashmiris to flee he doesn't want to be identified for fear of reprisals against him and other students. he says the violence began
9:16 pm
after a twitter post celebrating the deaths of indian troops in kashmir was spread on campus he believes the post was fake but the damage has been done and the people reported the. spreading hatred. like many marys he says he left kashmir because of violence there made him feel unsafe but later what's happening to them in india. you know nobody wants to stay i'll try and question you know some kashmiri say it's not just social media that stoking hatred against mary's in india they see the mainstream indian media as adding to the tensions and that's leading to more violence several television channels have had near continuous coverage of the attack on indian troops some parents feel the media is partly to blame for cautionary students now being targeted. the way indian media is provoking people and trying to incite trouble i
9:17 pm
don't think kashmiris are safe in india. but others blame india's leadership for not cracking down on the violence criticizing prime minister narendra modi for not condemning attacks against kashmiris or even appealing for calm the silence had been designed precisely. to give give space to every kind of hit it took on the out. looks and grand crevices and crannies every prejudice. the great it is the people used to be ashamed of in the past are now being glorified. the result of that is being felt by kashmiris across india as many now make their way back to. say for being in india. there are plenty more head of news including. collapse. many venezuelans
9:18 pm
seeking treatment and will be here with action from the. ships including. russia's president as one of the united states against stationing its missiles in europe speaking during his annual address to parliament and said moscow wasn't looking for confrontation with washington after both countries pulled out of a cold war era arms treaty the persian said russia would respond to any u.s. deployment. russia will be forced to create and develop weapons that can be used not only towards those territories that would threaten us directly also against the decision making centers that are behind the missile systems which threaten our. three pro european union politicians have resigned from the u.k.'s ruling conservative party over what they describe as the prime minister's disastrous
9:19 pm
handling it they're joining a new independent made up of labor politicians who left their party and anti semitism it adds to the pressure on tourism and she struggles to get parliament to approve her withdrawal deal before the brics a deadline on march twenty ninth paul brennan has more from london. the question now is just what impact it's going to have politically as far as persuading the prime minister to change her political negotiating stance with brussels i think that's unlikely to recent may has proved itself to be absolutely adamant that her way is the right way and her belief it may have a significant impact on the labor side with jeremy corbyn under significant pressure to start advocating now a people's vote another referendum on bracks it's the dissidents who have joined this independent group are certainly firmly pressing for that the question is though whether they can then take it on and become
9:20 pm
a fully fledged independent political party and i think at the moment that looks unlikely they haven't registered as a party it's an independent group and it's difficult to see how they could reconcile the left and right leaning politics in ordinaries in ordinary life and the conservatives have said they are still prepared to vote for example with the conservatives on matters of the economy on security things like that so they're not totally dispensing with their concern conservative ideology just yet nonetheless the timing of this is extremely interesting and as we enter as i say the last four five weeks of the process before this march twenty ninth deadline there is no coincidence that these m.p.'s believe that the timing of their decision to go independent is going to have the maximum impact on the political debate. well then as well as health system is close to collapse with an acute shortage of medical supplies and doctors many suffer from easily treatable problems they've had to travel to neighboring countries for care home and spoke to patients in the
9:21 pm
brazilian city of ballbuster near the venezuelan border. free of the body but full of spirit rafael majorca exudes the kind of calm determination most people in his condition would find hard to muster. before being transported to this hospital in neighboring brazil the thirty year old venezuelan was at death's door and while he's still extremely weak he's also much improved. why the just sexy he had skin rashes pneumonia and all of his conditions would derive from his diabetes which was uncontrolled that's most probably because access to things like insulin is rhea and venezuela is insulin a medication for diabetes patients readily available in most countries the world over but rafael whose aunt watches over him now just as she had prayed over him when he was in a coma wasn't so lucky i've been afraid in venezuela we can't get anything life
9:22 pm
just isn't good we can't get medicine we can't get insulin nothing had stayed there he wouldn't be alive today. for the time being rafael is unable to speak but he is communicative his doctor who studied medicine in venezuela still finds it hard to believe things have gotten so bad in her patient's homeland. when i was a student venezuela had to acknowledge that we couldn't find in brazil not just equipment but also medicine we now see that in only a few years the house system deteriorated to the point that they don't even have the most basic needs. in this relatively poor part of brazil the influx of so many even israel is in need of medical care has put further strain on the area's already stretched healthcare facilities walking through crowded corridors of where i'm a general hospital the director general shows me how they no longer have space for all the patients sadly rafael is one of many of them as well as at this hospital
9:23 pm
suffering from a medical condition that should have been easily treatable another stark reminder of the near complete collapse of the health care system in venezuela. before coming to brazil thirty four year old ricci cordoba kept going to see the doctor about the pain in his abdomen he was assured many times it was nothing serious but months after arriving here in the city of boa vista he got the proper diagnosis appendicitis and an old server and i mean in my job in a salon it's a shame venezuelans have to leave the country we will because of the economic situation and because of the lack of medicines for illness and go to other countries who receive us with a friendly embrace. some may call it an embrace others may call it treatment for many ailing venezuelans though it's a much needed road to recovery they simply cannot find at home mohammed atta.

9:32 pm
a tunnel too far at the heart of the ten billion dollar peroration is this drilling machine two thousand four hundred tons of steel churning to the rock nonstop towards italy. this is really the project of my life i hope to keep on and finish the tunnel. but emerging from a citizens' guardhouse on the italian side of the border it's fulvio is a lifetime ambition to make sure the tunnel never breaks through for years now thousands of locals here have been taking part in demonstrations against it the see me. of so many things to be down things attributed to the community and let's say for progress what is being done with this tunnel is a waste of frowns we waste a montane of found wasted. and fulvio has some backing in high political circles it leads deputy prime minister luigi mio head of the populous five star movement he's
9:33 pm
done most to fray relations with paris by meeting with members of the l. a vest rebellion besieging president macron the five stars deputy mayor of children described the project as insanity. the problem in our country the whole of europe and france with a get a vest is that their recent need for public investment but they must be for what needs must. back in france president emanuel macro is struggling to keep the on torrent. he didn't help when he described new populist movements as a form of political leprosy lest the u.s. to do to how it will be any transport links between the west and the east and that's why it is crucial and strategic once it's finished it will connect all the countries between portugal in eastern europe it's like a small reconstruction of europe's version of the silk road. that tell you we've got that the others are making nine. dollars in europe

9:36 pm
league it's more than five star issue there the whole was being against the tunnel because they are a populist movement they say it's a waste of money we should invest this money all their way and so they're trying to pose the ally in allies in their government and they're trying to challenge the north only on the on the issue because the north early is very close to the business community in the north of italy so it's now in this case it's more a domestic affairs than frying france italy attention and if we look at the france italy tensions how much of you know what's being described as the lowest point in france italy relations since the second world war would you say is due to the the current italian government and the fact that you know they are more populist and
9:37 pm
they represent a very different world view to that of the french president and government. the road three sources of tension between france and one is libya because frankly speaking now we are supporting different factions we are in the french the second point is immigration and the third point is an economic issue. schipper is growing by a french ship or. the french are afraid that v. country will be too powerful so in this case now of course this populist government is. the it's very i mean micron is alive the perfect enemy for them they are supporting jeweler joan and they think that they talk and people are closer to your own issues and topics and they are trying to.
9:38 pm
look like france of digitals they think that is what the was the major. european elite you mentioned the two countries supporting different factions different governments competing governments in fact in libya why is that such a source of tension between the two countries the fact that they support different governments in a completely different country and how much of that is because of all those countries france and italy is oil interests in the media. is losing iran and that's a real problem for younger and but it happened even with previous government what happen now is that maybe italy is weaker in the. italy on the world is weaker on the world stage and that's a problem for italian economy in fact in the interests of mr dyleski thank you very much for your time and your insights on this very appreciated that is actually live
