this is al jazeera. alone this is the news hour live from coming up in the next sixty minutes opposition leader calls on the international community to keep all options open after a day of violent protests along venezuela's borders. booming business versus widespread poverty and unemployment to rival narratives in senegal's presidential election. the pope calls for an all out battle against sexual abuse in the catholic church. and it's hollywood's night to shine find out the films that are capturing the most oscar buzz we look at what's different about this year's ceremony.
1:38 am
but we begin with the crisis in venezuela an opposition leader one of why don't calling on the international community to keep all options open that's after saturday's violent border clashes over u.s. aid that killed at least two people and left hundreds injured efforts to get aid convoys into the country turned into running battles between opposition activists and venezuelan troops. one hundred soldiers have abandoned their posts and joined the opposition in this way and president nicolas maduro cut diplomatic ties with colombia over its support for go i don't know venezuela's information minister has accused the opposition leader of staging saturday's event for another attempted coup it's nothing last year this is a fallacy that's all the supposed government of the wydow is all staged and it's fake what humanitarian aid do you know how many trucks move towards a more bridge to do you know how many nicolas maduro sends daily to distribute food
1:39 am
boxes one hundred sixty eight trucks every day president maduro is moving these trucks and there is evidence and it will get to the truth that there was nothing in their trucks why because it was destined for their trucks to be burned by the vandals as was done yesterday i. sorry allison the n.p.t. is in qatar on the colombian side of the border for osiris sondra what is the situation like there on the on in this morning. situation here is relatively calm after a long day of battles on the bridges connecting colombia with venezuela here the bridges are closed on both venice where they signed to close the border here
1:40 am
indefinitely and colombia said that at least for the next two days this will be the situation there are a lot of policemen on the colombe end side controlling the border making sure that there are no protests and we've also heard that there are a number. of families on the other side of this bridge claiming for the bridge to be open to some of them are migrants who are hoping to cross into colombia and others or. who come to call on me on a daily basis more than thirty thousand in this well and cross this bridge on a daily basis that they're searching for food in medicine that they can find the other side but they also sell things that they buy in venezuela and sell for a profit on the colombian side or work here so they're hoping that this is to ation

could change soon but where there's no indications so far coming from the venezuelan government especially after my bhutto's and now samantha to cut all diplomatic ties with. all do we know that illegal border crossings in the north. in the region of the heat are opening also south of here in although a smaller amount of people move along that border because there are no big cities in this case closer to two crossings and we have also. heard from migration services as you were doing and saying in your introduction that since yesterday one hundred who are members venezuelan military forces defected and are now here in colombia and also that four consuls that the. towns in the other side

of the border in venezuela were able to cross in to colombia. colombia trying to move all. in all it's called school employees back into colombia today on sunday. and what about the next steps. what happens from here we're going to go monday's lima group meeting them we. that's a question on everybody's mind what will be the opposition next step after the failure to move the aid into the country the leader of the opposition the self-appointed president arrived in the capital of colombia. just minutes ago he gave a short declaration there as he landed from a colombian government airplane he bank colombia once again for its help in this situation for storing the aid here on the border and he said that

tomorrow's meeting. will be very important he will be meeting there with the vice president the united states mike pence and with a representative. group of the fourteen. countries who are supporting him in the region plus canada speaking or hearing the clear ations from people close to door it's pretty clear that they're going to ask for a hardening of their diplomatic positions putting more pressure. probably asking the u.s. if they can put even more sanctions on. and also formally can see there in the possibility of the use of force. alexandra thank you let's get the latest now from the brazilian side of venezuela's border mohammed live in park i'ma
1:44 am
brazil mohammed what are the what are you seeing and hearing there. housing violence has erupted again add brazil's border with venezuela and the brazilian army has pushed everybody back what you see behind me that's just one of the border crossings into brazil beyond that is the official border line where brazil after that becomes venezuela so just in the past half an hour there have been renewed clashes we saw tear gas wafting in the distance we are told that there has been out of rock throwing that venezuela migrants are throwing rocks at venezuelan security forces on the venezuelan side of the border we're told also the venezuelan security forces are hurling tear gas canisters and also throwing rocks back toward the venezuelan migrants that are on this side of the border here in brazil really this is very much an echo of what happened yesterday evening that was the first bout of violence and fighting that we saw in this border which had been
1:45 am
relatively calm up until then every day that we've been here thus far everything has been fairly staid and very well organized this only happened yesterday after two vehicles the venezuelan vehicles that had a few boxes of aid supplies on them crossed just a few feet into venezuela stopped on the news on the side of the road in there and some aid was distributed but it did not go further into venezuela and now a few other developments to tell you about brazil's government has condemned the fact that venezuela will not allow aid into that country saying that it is in essence a criminal act also we've learned in the last hour that two venezuelan soldiers crossed into brazil that they have defected that they are now here on this border in one of the shelters that is on this border for migrants or people seeking asylum we're trying to find out more about them to see if we can speak to them and find out about their particular cases but a lot going on right now at a time when you know brazil's army and brazilian officials have said they are going

to continue to respect the sovereignty of venezuela while they do support them as well opposition leader one they do want to see. aid distributed and get in they have been clear from the outset of announcing this plan that all they were prepared to do was to get boxes of aid unclear how many that would be comprised of medical aid and food stuffs on the border and that then they were hoping that venezuelan vehicles would be able to cross and get that aid and take it back into venezuela the fact of the matter is though that there are these going as well security forces that are blocking this road this narrow stretch of road that leads into venezuela there's about ten to twenty of those security forces that have been stationed there since nicolas maduro close his border with brazil they will not allow those vehicles to pass into brazil to pick up any aid so it's a very fluid situation as i mentioned this is really the last kind of thing that brazil would like to see there's many reasons why brazil doesn't want tensions to continue to flare we must remember we are here in this rather poor northern region called hot i must state this is
1:47 am
a state that is actually not connected to the power grid in brazil they rely on getting their power most of it from one of the other reasons why they don't want to see things get too out of hand up here they want to make sure the situation calms down the brazilian forces they're out now they're trying to make sure that things continue to calm down they're trying to deescalate the situation but clearly they are nervous at this hour and worried the situations like this will continue to erupt in the hours to come. in and i'm on the brazilian side of the border with venezuela thanks very much. a quick reminder of who in the international community is supporting president nicolas maduro and who is against him russia says any moves to remove him from power are illegal while turkey has called him a brother china is also standing behind him mexico says it recognizes the current version of venezuelan government while allies bolivia and cuba say they remain
