6:00 pm
there is both curiosity and excitement about the two leaders this city is now playing host to and i hope that a city once synonymous with war could perhaps become a symbol of something else i feel very happy because world leaders are coming to vietnam to talk about peace to see each other and to shake hands. i think this is a good opportunity for hanoi and it can help us in many ways i'm proud because i was born here and i think the fact that donald trump and khinjan are in hanoi shows it's a safe city i think it will change the way the world thinks about theater. at this temple worshipers burn incense which they consider to be a link between humans and heaven and now this city itself may become a bridge between two men who've in the past threatened nuclear war. adrian brown al jazeera family. and i watch house correspondent committee health that is live at the international media center in hanoi so what will donald trump be trying to
6:01 pm
achieve with the summit committee he's actually talked about have no expectations what does that mean. yeah donald trump has continued to tout his unique round of diplomacy he has been spending the last couple of hours in his hotel where he has been tweeting quite a bit in fact one of those tweets he referred to is what he's selling to north korea and that is the future a bright future of economic opportunity calling that future awesome if in fact the north korean leader kim jong un agrees to give up his nuclear arsenal it's a high stakes dinner that will be taking place in just a couple of hours where as you point out the two will be meeting for the first time face to face since their historic summit in singapore but having said that donald trump is a bit defensive of some of the coverage of the his meeting so far at least with some of the vietnamese officials of what he hopes to accomplish with the north
6:02 pm
korean leader he has been tweeting rather extensively defensive in fact of the sort of criticisms in the media across the united states and also around the world that so far very little has been accomplished in terms of that goal of denuclearization he calls that false reporting and has also been rather critical on twitter some of the criticisms domestically essentially from democrats who say the president has not accomplished very much pointing out one tweet that if he hasn't accomplished that much then why did the democrats not do that when they were in control of the white house so clearly some of the criticisms are on the president's mind even as he is preparing for that first face to face with the north korean leader for dinner ok so a little bit distracted by the criticism what about the controversy the current controversy him but he had the trump woman noirmont and collins testimony against him has that followed him to hanoi and told.
6:03 pm
well as i pointed out that seems to be some of the distraction that is going on in the president's mind because there is some pretty damning testimony at least in all appearances from the prepared statements from his former lawyer and fixer michael cohen in those prepared statements we know that in front of the house oversight committee michael cohen will be. providing documents that he says will prove that donald trump had knowledge of illicit acts for which he has pled guilty to in federal court in the united states namely that the president wrote a check from his personal account for that hush money that was paid to adult film star stormy daniels with whom the president is alleged to have an affair and contrary to the president's denials michael cohen is expected to testify that he knew that one of his associates was speaking with wiki leaks about releasing hacked e-mails from the democratic national committee so this is expected to be very damning perhaps that's why in one of the many tweets the president has been sending out he's been pushing back calling his former lawyer
6:04 pm
a man who once said he would take a bullet for the president a liar and in fact saying that he's lying in order to reduce his prison sentence so a lot of distractions in advance of this very high stakes meeting here in hanoi committee thank you very much for that finale that's committee how could live and hanoi let's go to our diplomat diplomatic editor james bays he's also in the city and i don't know how much you heard of what committee was saying james but it sounds like you know with those distractions that controversy following him he might need a wind today. absolutely president donald trump is often in the storm back home and i think he's not to be isolated from that the fact he is here in vietnam trying to negotiate on what right now is one of his foreign policy successes he's here in the vietnamese capital of the last couple of hours have been taking a wonder through these teeming streets is interesting for me because less than
6:05 pm
a year ago i was in north korea and really you're in two different asian cities but the contrast is so great because of course in pyongyang even the busiest time of the day the streets seem almost deserted let's discuss the prospects of this summit with dr lami kim who is from the university of hong kong let me start with that point they're going to negotiate around detail about all the points of the nuclear program but just bringing kim to a place like can or one assumes is going to have quite a big effect on him yeah i'm sure he's a impressed by the health of the city and yet nonstick cannot make development in the hope that he will get the idea that north korea can get there as well by giving up nuclear weapons of course this is a country that once was a bitter enemy of the u.s. so he will see the parallels in terms of the nuclear program of north korea what sort of deal can keep this process going what sort of deal could they come up with
6:06 pm
here that will satisfy both sides and keep the diplomacy going yeah well both leaders on the a lot of pressure to make some progress because the single player game it was disappointment to many people i think during this summit the to leaders will be to agree on something something painful but not like a dramatic deals are over i think president. jiang in will and he dismantle some nuclear missile sites. possibly the younger nuclear facility. president a president trial will give some sort of a konami sanctions relief and also. to declare the end of the war and of the korea or maybe later in the future with the president and possibly presidency as well the thing about the north korean nuclear program is we don't entirely know what it is it may be a little i can only spur the cia think they know everything but there may be
6:07 pm
clandon parts of it yeah we don't really know where their missile sites are i mean some of them when they're not on the nuclear stockpile we don't know where they are however i don't think. agree to disclose all the details of the nuclear programs because at this point there is not much trust between the two countries there is some talk of actually ending the korean war i know the fighting stopped in one hundred fifty three but they only signed in. the peace treaty could that happen here in her noir what's your thoughts on that well technically harbin i thing that's not the most. but other parties have already either and the other part is that participated in the or or the united states china and south korea and china also have this diplomatic relations and so if this two leaders can agree to
6:08 pm
end or if they give it back to the. doctor larry king thank you for talking to us and we'll speak to again a little later here on al-jazeera so that is i think the view of many experts the hope that perhaps there can be some progress here to keep our process going to him thank you very much for that diplomatic editor james live in hanoi thank you plenty more ahead on news hour including struggling for survival the plight of millions of yemenis who spend hours every day searching for clean water for me. a historian who says georgia is trying to keep a lid on the secrets of its soviet past and in sports twenty sixteen anguish premier league champions left the city have a new manager and lives here with that story. the nigerian president has won a second four year term the election commission says he got more than fifteen

electoral commission i'm not. we have breaking out of that report to take you live to the pakistani capital islamabad where prime minister imran khan has been speaking let's listen there yes i know that whole people would have been in trouble there since ten years there have been seventy thousand casualties and since ten years i have been visiting so many hospitals i have seen you know up patients there they have a bomb blasts you know victims they were disabled people their limbs were broken broken legs broken arms. so i have seen that people who are her boss doorway and those people who have been injured then. the families have to face so we have. to india straight away that you want every investigation you are gone. and if
6:11 pm
there is any pakistani involved in that you know we've been able to be unsuitable and responsible for it and this is not in the interest of pakistan that to you all use all of our land for terrorism. and no and nobody from abroad can use. the pakistani line there was no dispute about it to be but already believe it already and beaver fully cooperative people will be able to operating and i always had my doubts that despite all this india is going to take some signs of an action and this is why he said that that will be desperate if you take action and this will be be able to be disciplined autistic bond and no gun trivedi allow another country to come into their country. and then let them do or there and then also be the charge judy and execute it and then i knew that there was indian elections
6:12 pm
coming up and. in spite of all this i told the india that rebill have to. retaliate action so whatever action was taken yesterday in the morning. or in the morning with the air chief and myself and we never took any action yesterday because we did not know that what damage has happened in pakistan. and until be but have not known sponsible this was going to be better for sponsible. that if he had would have taken action and would have and it was that they were. in for the indians that would have not been caught we would have decided to take action today we only wanted to tell india that really odd enough we have the ability that if you will come and if you can come into our land be can all of us come and we can retaliate.
6:13 pm
so did they too had crossed the border they were shot you don't and i'm going to say that the pilot solve with us. the problem is this that from where do we go from here this is a. turn pink and i am addressing india it is very important. that really use some business. do. you know as many wars that have been in the world there has been miscalculations in it all nobody had thought about it is that when they've built is a dot the border. or personal of a water a finished is it was going to finish in a few months it took six years second of all ball hit a clerk thought that he will conquer russia you know it was saw at this that. they will be delays and that there will be damage for russia and then the water on
6:14 pm
a border on terror and do be a good bit think that they will be seventeen years that they have this event in pakistan and brought about did anybody think that this will happen so all the history off the war tell us that there is miscalculation in the wars. drawer what ever what sons you have and what type of weapons we have. again b. of the us miscalculation can be afforded to shelby not think about it that if this thing escalates from here the way will it go from here no it does neither in my control nah it's in your control so i'm saying this again i'm i'm saying that please cooperate we are ready we told you. that what ever heard a tragedy in full mama is there what ever investigation what ever sadness it caused to you we can defy it very we will go and fight with your against editor but i will
6:15 pm
say this again to you. that better sense should prevail bishop sitdowns we should have a have a talk and thank you very much. so we've been hearing that the pakistani prime minister. who's been addressing the nation about the incredibly high tensions between india and pakistan over the last few days they started on february fourteenth in fact with a suicide bombing in indian administered media in which he just mentioned he said whatever tragedy took place in. we'll fight with you referring to india we will fight with you against terrorism the attack was carried out the group jaish e mohammad the pakistani group jaish e mohammad took responsibility for the attack and india has said that the pakistan . government that the military supports the group and have not done enough to fight
6:16 pm
against them our correspondent in iran has been i believe listening in and he's joining us live from the capital islamabad we had been waiting for this address in iran and it was it was emotional appeal even to the indian saying that they're ready we are offering to cooperate and that the greatest wars have been caused by miscalculations and that they can't afford a miscalculation here. that's right people a group glued to their t.v. screens watching this address and as you say it was an impassioned plea cooler heads to prevail on the mistakes not to be making but it's also a reiteration of the prime minister's previous position where in the days after the february fourteenth the tacky bit on television in a similar address the nation away he said look if the indians have evidence please
6:17 pm
share it with us please allow us to take on these groups that was actually criticized by members of the indian government saying well actually jaish e mohammad the group have claimed responsibility for it you know where they are you know where that leaves off so why are you all. for intelligence sharing with the pakistanis along maintain that the indians do need to share intelligence with them that this is a common problem to both countries so he's reiterated his position on that was very impassioned speech and he wants cooler heads to prevail it seems that he's taking the diplomatic approach to this he hasn't used language that my escalate tensions in fact he's giving us a warning from history. but hit and run he did say at the same time that they decided to take action today he said they didn't take action yesterday because they went sure how much damage was caused by that what pakistan says was an dia releasing a payload and dia of course says that they actually killed many fighters many jaish e mohammad fighters again he said they decided to take action today because it's
6:18 pm
very important for pakistan to tell and dia that if you cross our space and attack us we can do the same. that's absolutely right and one of the reasons for that is pakistan's own serenity and its own defense if the prime minister had taken a contrary position to the pakistani army who were wanting to take action then he wouldn't be prime minister for much longer if pakistan's history is anything to go but you don't simply go against the army and survive i would but there is a seemingly much more different relationship with this prime minister and this in pakistan so it's likely that the army and now the prime minister and now negotiating as to what to do next so wait and see what the indian response if any might be like they said earlier they have actually released pictures of one of the pilots they've also showing pictures of the site of where the downed aircraft actually is this is a big ratcheting up of tensions so it's now about whether it's diplomacy or whether
6:19 pm
it's military action and that will come from the indian response to what's happened now if it's a diplomatic response it will likely be a negotiation over the two pilots that the pakistanis say they have one of them we've shown pictures of and it's about negotiations those that say situations happening right now take a little bit of a while to get in place for now it's all about public statements from the prime minister there and so cooler heads to prevail on the pakistani side so we now need to know what the indians white say in light. of the part of this estate and ron thank you very much for that as and ron con what the latest live and now in a few minutes we'll have the weather with kevin but still ahead on the news our border while more on the attacks on donald trump's immigration policy that hollande he's aboard and it's called formula one legend watches has all the teams had to pay
6:20 pm
for pre-season testing is here with that story. well we bring you a lot of pitches of inclement weather across the world but today is going to be a little bit different here across europe we are dealing with some high pressure that is dominating it what it is doing is really clear in the skies of letting a lot of the sun across much of the area want to show you what's been happening here in brussels take a look at the video that has come in actually yesterday they broke the temperature record for february twenty point two degrees is what they hit here in brussels of course everybody was out in the street with the picnics as well as taking in the sunshine and this has been the trend over the last several days and today's going to be another day just like that all because of high pressure is dominating the region and that means the we're going to see more sun today and those temperatures
6:21 pm
are going to be in from the mid teens into the high teens some locations of terrace still seeing about twenty degrees there but over the next few days what's going to be happening is this high pressure is going to start to make its way over here towards the east and things are going to break down a little bit more towards the west that means we're going to see more rain across here parts of the u.k. so those temperatures coming from one thousand down to about thirteen degrees in london more rain and wind in your forecasts and then as we go towards friday well things across europe are going to look a little bit more like average for this time of year we're going to start to see those cooler temperatures and snow in the forecast. whether sponsored by cats are in. for some. say. the way of life. a battle is raging between the whaling industry and conservationists as the future of whaling in icelandic waters
6:22 pm
is decided. people in power killing whales are not just. when the news breaks a few minutes ago we were able to hear a huge explosion fifty people are still missing when people need to be heard and the story needs to be told we need to invest in development and you can best making sure the people are not left behind al jazeera has teams on the ground joined up for this historic step in american politics to bring you more rewards winning documentaries and life moves on and on line.
6:23 pm
have to have you with us on the al-jazeera news hour these are our top stories both end there and pakistan said they've shot down each other's fighter jets islamabad says it's down to turn and in planes and captured two pilots one at the hospital says it's shot down one part of the aircraft and lost one of its own. nigerian president mohammed the heidi has won a second four year term the main opposition though has rejected the results and will mount a legal challenge in court and u.s. president made. reinvaded kim jong un and the vietnamese capital in the next hour for their second summit. well meanwhile the president's former personal lawyer says he's looking forward to in his words telling the truth about donald trump's contacts with russia and alleged criminal conduct michael calling has been given testimony to the senate intelligence committee he said to serve time in prison for
6:24 pm
lying to the committee and twenty seventeen on wednesday he'll be given public testimony on sensitive and potentially explosive topics at this point in time i really appreciate the opportunity that was given to me to clear the record and to tell the truth and i look forward to tomorrow to being able to in my voice to tell the american people my story and i'm going to let the american people decide exactly who's telling the truth. well let's go back now to one of our main stories donald trump and kim jong un meeting in hanoi we're joined by b.j. kim he was a south korean diplomat with an adjunct professor at the university of our own studies and he's joining us live from seoul very good to have you with us on al-jazeera so how are these talks being viewed where you are you know south korea has perhaps the most to gain or lose from how much is achieved in hanoi. right we have we sense some mixed feelings here the majority of people seem to take
6:25 pm
the side with prism and jane and his government believing that this is another important step towards peace you know the kind of process that has begun since last year ever since president gene meeting with kim german early last year and then followed by the singapore summit and so on so certainly the majority of the people seem to be hoping that substantial progress will be made this time again adding on the result from last year but however there is a minority view conservatives are very much concerned whether trump will at the end as a result of this talk in hanoi announce something there will actually considerably compromise south korea's capability to defend itself if north korea keeps their nuclear weapons in one they are in on or another what they call a small deal or whatever in that case the south korea will be threatened by continue to be threatened by north korea that has nuclear weapons and as we see these talks for costs more on the present and the future of nuclear capability
6:26 pm
conservatives here are very much concerned about the past nuclear capability meaning the things that north korea has produced and then keeping in their pocket and of course after the end of the singapore summit you know these two signed a declaration saying that north korea would commit to work towards complete denuclearization of the korean peninsula how much progress has been made on that and when you talk about how south koreans are hoping for more progress what does that look like to them. here the majority seems to believe that unfortunately not much progress has been made the majority are keeping themselves their hope in place that actually we will see actual real meaningful progress being made from this point on but i think the majority believes that since singapore and up to this point actually there hasn't been a really meaningful progress i mean you know we all have all our hope for peace very seriously here but however in terms of potential progress so far the majority
6:27 pm
view is that we haven't seen much then therefore we need more from this time seriously and again mr ken what does that you know the more i look like beyond signing declarations. not so stay freezing something in younger insight for instance but doing more about the other sites and then for the dismantling youngun could actually give people peace you know peace of mind and then going over a younger side and then addressing other areas other sites where north korea may have their nuclear capability would greatly add to the a sense of comfort here but right now what we're hearing is possible three days only at the younger site of the nuclear nuclear activities in the future and that's really giving a sense of unsettling sense to the minds of especially the conservatives who are very much nervous about south korea's future self defense and safety and security
6:28 pm
here mr kim thank you as always for your time we do appreciate it that is beijing came live in seoul thank you now the syrian government and if our lives have intensified attacks on the problems of well more than forty civilians reportedly killed in recent weeks the bombardment has been targeting towns along the main road which links syria with neighboring countries and is in a hole the reports reclaiming the damascus aleppo highway seems to be the objective . attacks are intensifying and they are indiscriminate civilians are the majority of the casualties in. the southern countryside of it live is an active frontline. towns are now battlegrounds. they're being targeted by syrian government forces and their allies the northwestern province is supposed to be a deescalation zone and a turkish russian guaranteed ceasefire should be in place. was going to
