5:00 pm
so daniel this vietnam summit has it moved the process forward in any way. well that remains to be seen and many people are force disappointed there wasn't some breakthrough but james the diplomatic editor was correct in his report previous report that generally these processes work from the bottom up secretary pompei own president were clearly when they stated these are very difficult processes the agreement will be very complex but the working level experts have not had the opportunity and the time to do that work in to fulfill all of the required steps to draft a comprehensive agreement and i think the north koreans were stonewalling on this and wanted to get in the room with trump because he is. showing that he's vulnerable to being manipulated but fortunately in my view he did walk away if in fact it was going to be a bad deal it's better to walk away than to sign
5:01 pm
a bad agreement so now it will go back down to the lower levels and hopefully the process will work out but the kind of information that was revealed today we didn't have to send the president that is states halfway around the world to find that out i think our diplomats if they had been given the opportunity could have found that out so and also another thing i think people under appreciate or underestimate is the propagate propaganda value of the summit to north korea i was watching the north korean news broadcast here in the studio a couple of a couple of hours ago and the propaganda value was really tremendous how the north koreans presented this their leader sitting down with the peer equal to president united states so for that kind of gift to north korea we should extract something the next time before we have this kind of summit if they have as both these leaders quite like the optics of this kind of sum isn't the way it's plays out to that base back home domestically kim jong il so be very pleased to have.
5:02 pm
praising north korea's economic potential and indeed the lead to himself. yes well i think that is a true strict statement but up until now north korea has followed this so-called beyond in line that kim jong un is credited with from two thousand and thirteen basically it's a strategy of pursuing nuclear development both on the military side and the civilian side along with the economy but i think they're incompatible goals so if president trump is clear in that and u.s. diplomats are clear that to achieve that economic success and prosperity you have to abandon the nuclear program because they're just incompatible then they will be forced to make a strategic choice but if we just deliver all of the economic goods and north korea
5:03 pm
is willing to is not willing to abandon its nuclear ambitions then they're going to in line would be correct and achieved and they could be a nuclear power with economic prosperity which of course i think is something we should try to avoid ok daniel pinkston at the moment thanks very much taking time to join us there from seoul well north korea's foreign ministry delegation has left china. to give she's live for us in that beijing of lot of questions at that press conference as well were taken by chinese journalists what's the reaction that we've seen there in china so far. well china just finished its of foreign ministerial press briefing and basically it's said that look negotiations from our experience are a long drawn out process and we hope that the true sides can continue to have this dialogue now china will not be surprised by today's result they're not going to be
5:04 pm
surprised that there was no agreement although china wants denuclearization we have to remember that experts here have been telling us that any any progress that would be made in the hanoi summit would be limited and incremental but that's not to say that china won't be happy with today and i'll tell you why china sees north korea's weapons not as a disease itself it sees north korea's weapons of as a symptom and the real disease is north korea's paranoia north korea has a huge threat perception from the rest of the world specifically from the u.s. and as long is it has as it has that it will not give up its nuclear weapon so for china the fact that donald trump and kim jong un sat down for the second time the fact that donald trump called kim jong and his friend china will see that all as a very positive steps in the right direction what china wants to see is north korea slowly opening up it wants north korea to eventually be a normal country to eventually be a country that it can do trade with in the future that has trade relationships with
5:05 pm
other countries so it would see this as a just a step in that right direction would china have liked to have seen donald trump announcing the u.s. lifting at least some of the sanctions that says on north korea. definitely and i think this is probably one point that china is likely to be quite disappointed about i think china has always pushed for the lifting at least the partial lifting of some sanctions and some experts that we spoke to in the lead up to the hanoi summit said that something about china would of really wanted we have to remember that china doesn't really believe in the efficacy of sanctions because it sees the fact that these and these nuclear weapons are a result of this paranoia what they see as the only solution for north korea to ever really consider getting rid of this nuclear power is for to become strong in another way strong economically for it to develop economic strength to have more confidence in itself in that regard so this is why although china is imposing the
5:06 pm
u.n. sanctions on north korea it continues to be an economic lifeline for north korea most of the food most of the energy comes from beijing beijing is the biggest ally and trading partner of north korea it wants to see the regime succeed and this and to that end they want to see economic development so they're likely to be disappointed by it no movement on that so that's probably something they would like to see dialogue continue on and something that could possibly be lifted in the future ok to train e.u. joining us there from beijing thanks between now one person who will be closely following the developments in hanoi is the south korean prism in that he's expected to offer new proposals for him to korean engagement on friday joins us live in seoul the robots being served there in south korea they of course will be giving very close tabs on what's happening in vietnam. did you mention their moon jay and he was expecting to be watching as indeed we all were the signing of this agreement
5:07 pm
which are obviously never materialized we're still waiting for an official reaction from the presidential office the blue house we are waiting for that to come but i think there will be a sense of disappointment in fact just this afternoon thursday the blue house spokesperson was giving a regular briefing when in fact the news of this early cattail months of the summit arrived he was asked for a reaction taken quite by surprise by the speed of this news saying that undoubtedly the speed of the dialogue between the north and the south could well be affected but expressing optimism that the dialogue will continue obviously there have been improving relations over the past year or so but even as recently as yesterday when the blue house has been the managing expectations i think like everybody else there were suspicions that maybe there hadn't been the kind of progress made that people had been hoping for quoting from the ancient chinese
5:08 pm
proverb that a journey of a thousand miles takes one step saying that even if there was a small agreement it should not be regarded as a failure. idea of no agreement i don't think had crossed the minds of diplomats of government here in seoul and they are getting to grips with this the next question will be how they can maybe actors in to me jury again of the over the past year or so we've seen on a number of different occasions laura the moon j.n. stepping in when we had the on again off again run up to the summit last june in singapore moon j.n. beating with kim jong un to get things back on track it remains to be seen now whether his or interjection is needed once more people here in seoul were hoping for this a successful. summit to pave the way for an historic visit by kim jong un to south
5:09 pm
korea possibly as early as april it does seem now as though that might be in question or it does now put emphasis on that some of that visit by kim to maybe get things back on track that remains to be seen i think there is a sense of disappointment that there could have been just a small agreement they could have agreed something to move things forward i know that the a lot of the problems center on this whole question of lifting of sanctions as president trump said they were asking too much what people here in south korea were hoping for was not so much a wholesale lifting of sanctions but giving very specific exemptions to allow the government of south korea companies here to embark on joint economic projects with the north and i think there will be a feeling here that that wasn't too much to ask they could have got that from this summit and obviously now disappointment that there hasn't been those exemptions and
5:10 pm
kept on going on his way home now or well still be able to tell this as a big success twenty. as everybody keeps saying in a way that kim jong un seems to be playing for time he has had a meeting with the leader of the free world a second meeting he has had a summit meetings with his the enemies counterparts there's talk about obviously as we mentioned another summit with with moon so in a way this part is part of the rolling diplomacy that he's having with all of his neighbors but interestingly in north korea itself while we're all getting to grips with what is a very bad news technically coming out out of hanoi in north korea they're only hearing good news because of course with the way that the censorship there operates we are watching on north korean television their recount of yesterday wednesday's
5:11 pm
events in hanoi. does seem slightly anachronistic in this age of digital me instant media that you would be telling your people what's happened yesterday on this summit but believe me in north korean terms this is lightning fast often these kind of reporting of these events take days or even after the leader has returned to pyongyang before people in north korea are told there has been a summit like this so it is quite unusual people in north korea are being told about this summit as it goes along but a day late or so we are hearing from north korean newscasters about the success of the viet nam visit it's about meeting with donald trump about how the amicable dinner that they have been having and so on it remains to be seen laura what tomorrow friday the people of north korea will be told about what has been happening today ok many thanks for joining us from cell robin that bright.
5:12 pm
well donald trump is also on his way back home to washington d.c. where as can be held at mentioned much attention has not been on vietnam it's been on the testimony of donald trump's former lawyer michael cohen. has that full story after more than six hours of testimony michael cohen seemed to be fighting back tears this was a day of high drama that ended with this ominous warning given my experience working for mr trump i fear that if you loses the election in two thousand and twenty that there will never be a peaceful transition of power throughout his testimony cohen leveled a series of serious allegations against the president perhaps the most serious alleging that while in office the president wrote a personal check for the payment of hush money as part of a criminal scheme to violate campaign finance laws and the top democrat says he's convinced the president of the united states committed
5:13 pm
a crime i'm basing that on what has already been found here they think oh. mr cohen is pleading to charges where he said he will direct it to commit a crime but a president other allegations the trump lied about his tax returns being audited that he lied about pursuing a project in moscow and that the president's personal lawyers told cohen to lie to congress about it that he believes the president didn't know that his son was meeting with russian officials to get dirt on his opponent that it is possible trump defrauded banks and insurance companies cohen says the president was told in advance that wiki leaks would leak damaging e-mails from the clinton campaign an allegation wiki leaks denies and he says the president is being investigated for other yet unknown crimes that he couldn't talk about you know what cohen from did not hold back he's a racist he's a con man and he's a cheat. republicans countered cohen is
5:14 pm
a no liar he pled guilty to lying to congress along with other serious crimes he can't be trusted you know you're a disgrace lawyer i mean you've been disbarred i don't know a juror in america that would believe anything mr cohen says given his past actions and lies this committee laid out a case for why they need to move forward expect that they will in the coming days call for the president's personal attorneys to testify before them ask whether or not cohen was in fact told to lie to congress they're going to want to bring in the people who know the president's finances they can do that they have subpoena power they can make people testify under oath making it clear that this is just the beginning. to call him al-jazeera washington. well i have the news has been more cross border shelling between india and pakistan and the disputed kashmir we can. find suggests that is down to indian planes and captured

5:17 pm
a sign of how seriously people here are taking the tensions though there has been shelling on both sides of the border which is about eighty kilometers in that direction and people are fleeing a lot of people have come to a robot to seek refuge here in some cases people actually trying to leave pakistani administered kashmir all together now pakistani is currently on new delhi there waiting for a response to prime minister imran khan's televised address the nation where he strongly defended his country's right to defend its own borders but said it was time for new delhi and a slow boat to sit down and talk and come to a peaceful end to this crisis now we haven't heard anything from the indian side so far so all the pakistanis the analysts the observers even the pakistani public are wondering what is in the indian mindset at the moment what will the indians do in wake of everything that's happened over the last twenty four hours negotiations to

it's been a month since we last discussed the political crisis unfolding in fairness weigh in on the story in some ways a lot has changed there's been an increase in violence along the country's borders u.s. aid convoys blocked and meetings between the country's opposition leader and latin american heads of state. in other ways if the status quo the country is still crippled by hyperinflation food and medicine shortages continue at present we maintain power but can he hold on joining us discuss this in caracas venezuela and . is a political activist and a co-founder of the caracas quite a cause also in caracas and a tele come anigh and he's a reporter with the new york times and in new york to me upon us he's a professor of economics at science out of form a political advisor to venezuelan president nicolas maduro at eleven but i get to have you here. at a tony i mean i want to go back to the weekend when you on the border and it's how
5:23 pm
do you start the story and tell it from your perspective what did you see what happened was a lot of expectations that saturday would be that day that break this deadlock that you mentioned earlier but your position would be fine to be able to really be a through overly communitarian channel and basically break mcgillis hold on the military. and it didn't turn out like that the date it generated and russia's very early on. protests this crash or at least that national guards on the bridges that led to colombia and the government had to resort to their militaries to arm farms to basically disperse a process there is have is a lot of violence a lot of injuries and the opposition basically failed to bring breakthrough. i mean on a what did you report on from the border. i made my way to the border with a camera crew hoping to get shots of the food coming into the venezuelan side i was
5:24 pm
in a small protest in one of the three bridges and i had to stand for those and while first of all a convoy of national police special forces known as spies pointed at us and peaceful protesters who were there with automatic weapons one of them tried to hit me and tried to hit several other female women protesters who were there and minutes after right in front of a cordon of national venezuelan national guard we were attacked by gunfire motorcades paramilitary groups came roaring by and started shooting i could hear the bullets flying i could hear them ricochet off of the off of the wall as we were we were able to find shelter in a nearby home where around forty persons were cowering in fear we had to crouch down to the ground children were crying women were separating for it separated from their children and it was it was it was a scene of terror and we had to flee to hide out and wait until the paramilitaries left. and they and they and they went on to do the same in
5:25 pm
a different bridge i mean i don't know what you are describing sounds absolutely terrifying to be part of and thank you for sharing your story with us we got this comment though from someone who sees the events of this weekend of saturday in a different light and here says another way of putting this might be clashes broke out after u.s. aid convoys trying to illegally penetrate the borders of a sovereign nation check your perspective as the hash tag there using hash tag hands off minutes away tomorrow what do you make of that take well i would say that . in the past. on folding over events after twenty three twenty third we're going to leave to buy the outcome and that's what we saw this week and i'm not surprised at all. that violence sparked emerged out of this. attempt by the opposition and the survival and the us administration and the
5:26 pm
government of colombia to again illegally penetrate into the territory of venezuela whatever you make of the internal situation of venezuela and whatever your views are on the government of mahmoud of you cannot ignore the fact that there is a regime change policy in motion that has been on folded from the us and the so-called humanitarian mission was part of a political move to generate a crisis of the regime in venezuela and generate regime change so again i'm not surprised that. the actors to be privileged avenue to generate regime change that violence sparked and we are now. very dangerous situation where the violence could become general not only at the border. between venezuela neighboring countries but within venezuela and eventually also with the prospect of
5:27 pm
a potential military intervention to be put out regime change i think it's an idea that you suggest. it's important to point out that these armed military groups are working in tandem with the national guard say that not one of its leaders made his way over to the colombian border with venezuela over a week ago and lined up prisoners the minister of the prison system in minutes while i was also there so it's important to point out that there is a very clear collusion between the violence generated by paramilitary groups and government security forces whose whose last job it was to protect the people of venezuela to me. what i have to say about that is that basically you have the cup kill for a civil conflict in venezuela again you can you can have but it is an extremely polarized country and you can have polarize narratives about the situation of
5:28 pm
venezuela having again mutually exclusive visions of the same objective reality and i'm not interested in that debate what i'm interested is in focusing on the very deep political crisis that ben as relates make is going through and what are the ways out the ways out of that political crisis that can deliver stability and a democratic and peaceful outcome so making a case for further interference making a case for a violent outcome by the intervention of a foreign government in venezuela whatever again the internal situation is will only lead to a deeper crisis will only lead to a you know the eventually be of this violence is spreading all around the country and this is not a solution out of the political crisis that is why again i'm not interested in comment to this fact of violence here or there ok but when you heart of the major
5:29 pm
point let me just bring let me just bring in president ad like puppets of the us this is what he said at the weekend when he was on the venezuela point have a listen well what we announced today the media the aftermath of this weekend were sanctions against three border state governors or to security in the brutality that took place and prevented the military to come intervention with. another individual within the derision but look i also made it clear the treasury department of the president's direction is also working on a whole new range of financial sanctions that will further isolate. the derision and access to world markets. and tell me in the u.s. isn't the only country that's making it very clear that they have an interest in what's going on politically in venezuela how are you reporting that. the u.s. has become by far the biggest ally or why don't governments in the last few weeks
5:30 pm
the latin american countries also played a big role to maturity or something so it's neighbors have come out very strongly against meant to row colombia becoming a key and we've seen the european nations which have usually have sensitive so except roche share in the consumer trip also recognize quite daughter nicole i'm not sure it's a go so what do it does look increasingly isolated the way we've been reporting that we've been trying to figure out what's going on inside china and russia biggest allies month or so has and how their position is changing you know the government both have big investments in the country and both want to reduce favorably on the other hand and extent that the economic crisis makes the center untenable. that perspective is seen here online as well this is one person who says of the jobber on twitter he says the u.s. involvement is geared toward serving the interests of big western corporations and
5:31 pm
stealing the oil wealth of venezuela the world's largest which the socialist model has prevented so far so we see a lot of tweets like this but this second comment we got from someone who tweeted in is a little bit of a nuanced view that we don't see as often he says even though america always plays double standards their involvement in venezuela is very much needed to save the venezuelan people in many other take us through this idea are there are calls in venezuela are they growing for military intervention. well what i saw after this weekend's atrocities was people that are terrorized are defenseless and live in constant perpetual fear because of these paramilitary groups that have been unleashed but also because of other different irregular actors that control great parts of that its own territory such as yellin and other guerrilla groups as well as drug trafficking cartels excedrin i find it disingenuous to to blame the state
5:32 pm
sponsored violence and terrorism on these defenseless protesters who have led efforts that have been that have been supported by many countries not just in the region but in europe and in asia as well to defend that as one constitution we have to remember that this movement began and on january twenty third when when one way though took the oath of office and obeyance of the constitution seeing as there was a vacuum of power because motos reelection was widely considered a sham so so i did see many i spoke to at least five persons in fact in a state at the border who after they had been attacked by paramilitaries and given this life of terror that they that they live under told me that we cannot do this alone we need military intervention and just basically render defenseless and hopeless and i tell you i don't agree but i would agree that. you know invasion for
5:33 pm
invasion was always kind of a three shot fair into the soil or confines of a radical right wing groups and the support for intervention stephanie brought you know you see people that have been so beaten down by the economic crisis that we just send look you know just regular marie osmond's normal whole class people to any other solution and and that's what's scaring us. through twenty four peaceful negotiation the room for peaceful transition that's a miracle to early is shrinking day by day because of the actions of both sides and they know something you don't very soon. in a military and interesting louche to me i'm looking at what i would i would like a fact a man and i have an interesting situation to take i had amie on a woman take a hat i just never like and then his frustrations with a hostage situation and so i see i see a very difficult path out of a hostage situation through dialogue which has been tried once and again to no avail yesterday now i would just like to point out that my co-host
5:34 pm
are speaking from caracas they were at the border the covert the situation the border travelled back to crack a are speaking to international media so again. the description that there that i've just heard of the. venezuelan society required sorry requiring to be saved by an intervention of marines needs to be balanced frankly needs to be balanced and i and i would disagree also with the with the vision that the window for negotiations has closed i think that on the contrary the the the strategy consisting in the self proclaiming of mr world where you go on a very peculiar once again this is a polarized country everybody has its own interpretation even of the constitution so based on our an interpretation of the constitution the self reclaiming of where you go was intended to generate.
