3:00 pm
but once the police jumped out of cars with guns making sure that no one was of the everyone had stories of coyotes around the city seems to the whole city has been locked down the school shot the social service eve rebuilding in christchurch even one being told to stay hard and it's been a second shooting at a mosque and what about fifteen minutes drive from the first mosque we don't have the numbers the fatality we've heard reports and we can see people being taken injured and to hospital we do know that the bundle of cricket team were at the games evan you're mostly the first shooting took place saying at this stage no figures are being released we just know that multiple people and and we do know that the we've understood their fatalities but images have been released to us that really is and i'm holding story and the gunmen us in on the loose in the city and just a quick update new zealand police now saying that they have they're not aware of other suspects beyond the four that they've arrested after the mosque shootings but
3:01 pm
they can't be they can't be certain about that four people arrested three men and one woman one australian national arrested that information confirmed by australia's foreign minister scott morrison but new zealand police saying that they're not aware of other suspects in these incidents so perhaps we might be reaching the end of the shooting incident in christchurch which was an active situation for a number of hours we also spoke to another reporter and use even on a burnt francis who is a reporter for television new zealand and she gave us this update at the time. we've just received in the last couple of minutes a notification from police that the lockdown across all christchurch schools all schools in the canterbury region has now been lifted that means children who have been kept in school for quite a long time more than they used to three hours over to from when schools would normally finish they can now go home much to the relief of their parents obviously
3:02 pm
families of those children will have spent a worrying few hours hoping that all the children will be safe in those schools so police say that means there is still a large police presence across the city but that those children can now go home for the evening what about the mosques the situation at the mosques. well the situation remains unchanged obviously the these two mosques that were the scenes of these horrific acts are now crime scenes but of course there are a number of mosques across the rest of the country is the muslim population is not big at sony about forty six thousand people at the last count but there are mosques around all of the main seems as of new zealand and in much smaller towns as well with these communities will congregate so police have said that as a precaution and a precaution only they don't believe there's any active three to those mosques but as a precaution they have sent patrol cars to every mosque around the country that they're
3:03 pm
aware of and they're also asking that mosques keep their doors shut until they say this threat is over. and you know i think for for our viewers it's very important to understand you know the situation in new zealand in what we're dealing here is an unprecedented event for the country police in new zealand not on these events the shootings don't happen in new zealand as the do in the united states for instance so what sort of response can we expect after this from the authorities and from the public. absolutely you are quite correct new zealand is just not used to seeing. at the moment of course they will be on high alert and they are all. the responses have responded across the country focusing on the region so it's two way street really i suppose for many people it will be reassuring for others it will be a reminder that this could still be
3:04 pm
a situation that develops and one that we are still uncertain of the most of all with this fully and interesting the during his news conference the police commissioner was asked whether he would describe this as a terrorist attack and he didn't see whether he would is that likely to change. what we know from the reports we have put out by the men purporting to be the gunmen before he went on this attack he certainly has described his actions or his planned actions at that time as being a terror attack because we are so unused to any situation like this in new zealand no doubt they are taking some precautions with the way in which they describe what has happened today and no doubt it will be a developing situation in which they look back and assess how this was handled what warnings they were that how will these agencies respond and whether that would be considered a terror attack the prime minister was hitting back to wellington the softer tone she canceled the rest of her duties to meet with the militants who response teams
3:05 pm
and try and work through just exactly what has happened and how they deal with this going forward you know as we speak and we're watching the latest pictures we have from outside of one of the mosque outside of. the scene of one of the attacks and the people gathered there trying to comfort each other as you said new zealand doesn't have a big muslim community you say about forty six thousand people you know tell us about the reactions and also had they been warnings is you know are hate crimes an issue in new zealand. well it's a tricky one to answer really because it wouldn't be fair to say that there is never a high crime new zealand you know needs to own these sorts of situations there have been crimes in the past that could be described as hate crimes but certainly nothing on a scale like this this is unprecedented an attack on a community that had no reason to expect anything like this should ever happen to
3:06 pm
them they came to new zealand for safety for peace and security quite often many of our muslim population might have come from as refugees to this country expecting that this would be a fresh new start in the safe life that they wanted and certainly today would say that that was something they should have been able to expect and didn't get from our country and that they haven't been kipps but certainly from the people we've spoken to that one news has talked to that mosque a deeply distressing afternoon what should have been a peaceful prayer time for them turned into horrific scenes and that will take them many months many days to process what has happened to them that was a burns francis a reporter from new zealand speaking to us earlier from oakland they have been lots of reactions of course to these attacks in christchurch new zealand attacks at two mosques one reaction here from head and krok the former prime minister of new zealand who says very shocked to hear of shootings and many deaths and injuries at christchurch christ church new zealand mosque where people wear it friday prayers
3:07 pm

i've just had one of the ladies or dardar know i'm just hoping that that is not correct witnesses say the gunman was a white male he was wearing military style clothes and a helmet with a camera i was hearing there to shooting up the shooting of the shooting it went on . six minutes or more in. i could hear screaming in the crying and. some people are in or drop dead linwood bosc about ten minutes drive away in another part of the city was also attacked shortly after the shooting at al no police say they have suspects in custody but there may be more on the loose there warning people to stay away from mosques across new zealand we are pouring resources into the area every available canterbury and. staff member and people neighbor the remarriage and see services
3:12 pm
also i. said trading area with visibility to ensure that everyone who needs to get home can get so safely new zealand's prime minister just said this is one of her country's darkest days there is no place in new zealand for such extreme x. of unprecedented violence the people who were the subject of this attack today new zealand is the home they should be safe here the person who has pictured at this violent acts against them they have no place in new zealand society this footage published online reportedly shows the suspect being arrested after the shootings police say they all say found bombs attached to several cars which have now been disabled victoria gate and the al-jazeera. well the former head of the hour nor mosque spoke about his first hand experience with the shooting. at the time or one forty pm the area in front of me and then the gate for us to get

and he came in to one person and he has short man one hundred fifty written and here helmer and he's given the got glasses and here's the address of the military and he's begun michigan of the m. sixteen one and it is. another going to get a gun. and they're here but. what it would not talk me here looking a lot of is tough it is started shooting and the people of the. undershirt in under me. that's a good how do you go one by one if you can and some people that. i want to take you back now to wellington in new zealand where the prime minister of india are there and it's once again addressing me the n.s.a. can assume tonight we believe that forty people have lost their lives and this act
3:14 pm
of extreme violence. teen have died at lynnwood every new mosque three of which were outside the mosque itself. are free the sushi have been killed to dean's every new mosque. there are also more than twenty seriously injured who are currently in christchurch i n a. it is clear that this can now only be described as a terrorist attack. from what we know it does appear to have being well planned two explosive devices attached to suspects of the coast have now been found and they have been disarmed there are currently four individuals who have being at the handed but three connected to this attack who are currently in custody one of which has publicly stated that they were born. these are
3:15 pm
people who i would describe as having extremist views that have really no place in new zealand and in fact have no place in the world. while we do not have any reason to believe at this stage that the any other suspects we are not assuming that. the joint intelligence group has been deployed to employ pushing all of the resources into the situation room the defense force are currently transporting additional police staff to the region and our national security threat level has been lifted from too high for this so i want to assure people is to ensure that all agencies are responding and the most appropriate why that includes at our borders many of you will have seen it in new
3:16 pm
zealand has canceled all tube flights out of christchurch tonight and will review the situation in the morning services as domestically and internationally i continuing to operate i say again there is heightened security there is of course so we can assure people of the safety and the place. to ensure that people are able to move around the city. i have spoken the saving to the mayor of christchurch and i intend to speak this evening to be a mom. but i also want to seemed to those directly affected and facts i'm sure right now in new zealand would like me to share and message on the about. with those who have being impacted today. christ juge was the harm of these victims for meaning this may not have been the price they were born in fact for me
3:17 pm
new zealand was the choice the place a actively kind and committed themselves to the place they were raising me families where they were part of communities state they loved and who loved theme it was a place that many came to for in safety a place where they were free to practice a culture and their religion. for those of you who are watching at home tonight and questioning how this could have happened here where a new zealand. we were not a target because we are a safe for those who hate. we were not for the sake of violence because we condone rice ism because we are an enclave for extremism. we would chosen for the very fact that we are none of these things. because we represent diversity
3:18 pm
kindness compassion. for those who share our values fuge for those who need it and those values i can assure you will not and cannot be shaken by this attack. and we are a proud nation of more than two hundred eighty. one hundred sixty languages and among said diversity we share common values and the one that we place the currency on right now. and tonight is our compassion and the support for the community of those to reclean affected by this tragedy and secondly the strongest possible condemnation of the ideology of the people who did this you may have chosen us but we actually reject and condemn you. who the. perpetrators of those slaughter of the right. of the g.c.
3:19 pm
. what i can inform you of this time that. those states as far as i'm advised currently in custody were not on the security watch lists that i'm sure will be a question as if they would if they were no one from a security perspective and they were not on any active watch lists of course the police to currently questioning those in custody so beyond that is not too much more i can say this time is that after they were told what the screen will i think that gives you an indication there at least from then there were a god is so they weren't on watch list so it's not a matter of someone having slipped under the right again it is early days that seems sure and so i can give people at this time people are in custody or recently being questioned the commissioner of police will be giving an update again roughly somewhere between ice and i used to see those the question said perhaps you can put
3:20 pm
to him again during should i think hey think they can actually teach an old muslims here. for the whites to be white just because i think we should be vigilant against the idea of extreme ideology and extreme violence and violent acts and he thinks putting too much of the focus on. all of us the old you will notice from the language that you hear from those who can our intelligence and security services that. it focuses on extremism regardless of where it comes from we need to be blind in that regard it needs to absolutely focused on three eight and ideology and extremism because obviously that is what we have experienced today in this is for me. and. we have undoubtedly experienced in a take today that is unprecedented and like anything that we have experienced before but as i say new zealand has been chosen because we are not
3:21 pm
a place where violent extremism exists we reject those notions and we must continue to reject them this is not an enclave for that kind of behavior for that kind of ideology we will and must reject it this is a place where people should feel secure and will feel secure i am not going to leave this change new zealand's profile none of us should for it we're told. intelligence agencies. want to warn all. obviously barry it's an indication to that they had not acted in a way that warranted it again i feel free to ask the questions at this time i'm not in a place to give you additional information beyond their. version of the very very telling question from clear. which. one i'm the. one it's my understanding at this stage is that they weren't on watch
3:22 pm
lists again i don't want to go too much here on the set is too early days you'll also understand i want to jeopardize the case that might be taken in the future as well i do also want to acknowledge that i have been contacted by prime minister scott morrison i speak with him directly as soon as i'm able. to. not at this stage but simply the minister of foreign affairs and the prime minister of australia have contacted. d.p. prime minister myself going to. the edge of the victims. not at this stage i will have been amongst other members of the public who will have seen the footage is to enjoy being brought to christchurch i may and you certainly can see from that footage there is a real ryan show of ages c.-a my imagine that they would have represented particular brothers fathers sons. i haven't had
3:23 pm
a breakdown of the stage sorry it's not information i can share what is your source to start her breasts and then she is in. my heart this is. the. women's house of. horrors. these are obviously questions that at this point i'm not able to give additional details on. that a fiend is in custody now so i can give that assurance he has been apprehended he is also. accompanied by two other associates he is being actively question obviously these might be additional questions that you could put to the commissioner of police to you asking him to call the islamists instead of salute again as i say i've given you the advice i've given me about watch lists but obviously these things are absolutely questions that will be asking and clearing access to firearms. this was your last that you. and i had crossed
3:24 pm
into the exhaust. they. weren't cherished this stage only asking people to continue to follow the advice of the police yes we have ever hinted they had been three individuals abraham did however the police are taking for granted that the in my might well be others that they in my need to be born into custody have gotten a raise. to expect that but they haven't ruled it out so plays in the meantime continue to listen to police advice but i also want to give assurance to paypal the police are obviously incredibly active on the ground they are bringing in additional police officers the defense force of bringing them down so just listen to the advice that's available to you but we are ensuring the security of those who are moving around in christchurch at this time. it was a risk to the. principle that he's
3:25 pm
a fool to all of that nor he did not directly connected to the attack sort of question so early at least partially it is my understanding nice use of a lot of the research. in connection to the takes today all of the individuals that wasn't there would be a question for a commission of bush i'm not sure if there's something crime i voted to share but i know anyone who is a threat to the public to the relief of the those risks. ideology and what is there certainly that is the assumption that i would mike at this stage we've seen from one of the if in does that they have publicized their ideology i have no reason to assume anything other than that those of us who have been arrested would subscribe to the same ideology which i can i hold this climate of like very soon and this is not in a position to to give away additional details on the on the citizen ship at this
3:26 pm
stage barrie cassidy. well i would. say it is invest in the food you know as this point i think it's an opportunity to really acknowledge the work that the police are doing you know the brain. of a suspect and extremely volatile situation really putting themselves at risk on our behalf and i want to acknowledge that particularly also disarming. the explosives that were as i understand attempts. two the suspects car as there were two of them and they have being disarmed to now but obviously that was a high risk situation gives us an indication that there was a degree of planning around what has happened today for a suicide attack but i can i cannot speak your light around what the intention was but again it was attached to the suspects suspects vehicles. no not at this stage. of the same message for any other vehicle of which there were
3:27 pm
a lot like look my and my message would be. we should not be pitcher waiting sharing giving any oxygen to this excerpt of violence and the message that sit behind it we should all be condemning obviously what has happened here today in the peaceful nation of new zealand and what all of us can at least so is ensure that we do not sheer sprayed or actively engage in that message of hate we have been given assurance that our online. forums where some of those images have been shoed are actively being remote but i just ask people don't shoot them carrying. this is not who we are this egg was not a reflection of who we are as
3:28 pm
a nation that is why so many new zealanders every new zealander i imagine will be shocked by this today because this isn't who we are you know this is something that we all of us actually reject and of course it will take time to heal and tonight our thoughts and our priest need to be with those affected but i'm sure of course that all of us. want to retain the identity we have as a nation because that's why those who live here live here. here. of course i didn't see as always need to be prepared we need to be vigilant we need to ensure that if we have a good and ect like this on our shores that we respond quickly to give assurances to the public that we can protect them and they safety is top of mind so we are always prepared and we personally prepared for these things to happen an event like
3:29 pm
this of course is always a shock but for agencies we were ready for the early in. the series. ok because that's the problem is that we simply must always be vigilant obviously we've left three level from low to high that's of course so that we can continue to give assurance to the public around the safety that means we have our response for eigenstates at the border at the polish effect at every level we have a heisman response and again that so we can give that assurance of of safety to the public are going to. take up the call certainly as i say of course events like this we always have. in place and of course will always be working to ensure that we've adequately responded. to it off i'm very king to travel as soon as i can but of course within reason taking advice from the police around when i
3:30 pm
can do that in such a way that doesn't end and to feel with their operational would my hope is that the very latest start the better i'll be down there tomorrow going to be a signal from scott morrison is there any willingness around the world that have contacted you in the wake. of some of that and i have come directly to the ministry of foreign affairs in tried but at least are directly certainly from a strategy or at this stage often research is a conveyed via social media as well and i'm sure you would want to thank them for the thoughts and their offer of assistance and if you want it to play at the hospital even the way that we did it was aggression sinaloan are i haven't i haven't had any information that that confirm stayed at all not if it was and i found it all unfolding in our i cannot confirm that i do feel free to put that question to the commissioner for the version. of the whole movies where there are intelligence agencies. just won't quit on them why don't they see the
3:31 pm
most when are you going to be meeting with whom we could. speak. like they reconvene with. in the safe thing you will appreciate barry that at the moment our immediate response is on ensuring the safety of those and christ ensuring that the police have everything they need from an operational perspective. to secure the areas and be assured that everyone who should be in custody is acknowledging that they have moved extremely quickly to have those individuals already in custody of course we will continue to look at the details around the suspects. and every element of this attack but tonight it's about securing the safety of others. in the only woman there were at this stage again as i say three being a reste and we have no reason to suspect at this stage there were others but we haven't obviously ruled that out at the stage or use firearms. i cannot give you
3:32 pm
one hundred percent sure an assurance of that but certainly we're all three connected with the getting additional security or the security that. look at the stage obviously i'm one of the members of parliament that always has a security detail with me. obviously the moment that we were informed of this situation there was a slightly heightened presence but i expect that that will probably resume back to to my my normal presence. to. the super user. defined as to look i can't give specifics around who was directly involved at each mosque and nor i'm i'm sure at this stage that state that we're sharing to feel free to put the question to the commission of our. case the speaker.
3:33 pm
based. easy. to get. to. this matter standing. we're. sorry but. this. was our. advice has been given to to those who would usually wish to worship at their local mosque for the time being they're being asked to just not to congregate there but in time my hope would be a day that the outpouring of compassion and support that i know new zealanders will want to show you. show it to them to show it to the members of the community who sought to worship so i fully and who were the victims of this of the satanic today and i know new zealand as well want to do them and it's. my understanding that it is
3:34 pm
a relatively short period of time since last entry into new zealand again i don't want to get into too many details around that because it's still an emerging picture of. the story. for. us and what i will say a moment is that they were in on on a watch list again i'm cautious around how much more i say given that we have individuals in custody now i don't want to jeopardize the case but that might be jaish al that the commission of baby will be willing to share already for one look at all look to reconvene and give you any additional insights i can tomorrow or will be keeping everyone updated my plan is to get to christchurch as early as i can and as soon as the police ahead be for me to do so i'm. here remarking on this you know our eyesight in the kind of confusion that that's i think i've been briefed on will make sure that the commission is able to give you information as soon as possible thank you everyone using lens prime minister just into our day and
3:35 pm
addressing reporters there for the second time this fry. after an attack in christchurch new zealand an attack on two mosques just into order and saying that forty people have been killed and twenty others injured in the mosque shootings in christchurch shootings that she has described a terrorist attack to speak to krishna norman now the journalist on the line from wellington for us who was listening in to what the prime minister had to say tell us more about what the prime minister reveals about these a time soon christchurch to. take a listen to reveal the shocking number which i think has probably come as a real shock to all those who keep this would have good big bill and good spirits to pack clean kill the most and then words that to the east of crime church. the more control mosque the big

a mosque where about five hundred people had gathered for friday prayers. again she said this was clearly a planned terrorist attack she said that to explode. had been found attached to cars and they had been dismayed hundreds of people have been praying that that's really. a risk to conviction to the attack. it's it sounds and it was the gunmen who. seemed to. crush it and then he had to accomplish a. well know that. one of the gunmen took a. great team tara to lead the strike. with the promise of more about citizenship before they take the

she said that the national threat level had been lifted from reno too high what does that mean a far as. the security then across the country what is going to change from now. i think. that is so that operators can be more secure. them and take trips to traditionally had a daily security it's great. to see a. city and to take so it's probably most cry. the security a little has been crazy. they. take kids to be taken they were not on the watch list. intelligence court she left and she could see more information about about why that was the case that she did condemn this was a planned attack of the prime minister and so. as
3:38 pm
a prime minister said this this really is unprecedented for new zealand a truly shocking moment for the people that tell us more about the reactions the movie and community was targeted today in these attacks what are people saying you know how are they expressing their sympathies. yeah people are incredibly. shocked that this could be something that could be the say the last time. the public officials said they were there two hundred seats in this country had good sixty languages we're a country of kindness and compassion and i think the guy. does know we're asleep. i was speaking to a syrian family a couple of days ago has just moved and they say that they welcoming and friendly

camp i people who live show that gathering in prayer vigil the christian community of christ to give to get through this incredibly shocking time the suspects. have been. identified as three men and one woman one of them being an australian national and we had that confirmation from the australian prime minister and he said that australia was going to be involved in the investigation somehow do we know a bit more about. where i. am of them astray him play something share information and i'd imagine that this is a pretty big inquiry to get to the bottom of these people. how they could stretch it there's how they apply the same all of them to. that and

people killed according to australia's prime minister a new zealand's rather prime minister just in the on dearne here's what she said about the attacks just a short while ago. it is clear that this can now only be described as a terrorist attack. from what we know it does appear to have being well planned two explosive devices attached to suspects vehicles have now been found and they have been disarmed there are currently four individuals who have being apprehended but three connected to this attack who are currently in custody we new zealand. we were not a target because we are a safe harbor for those who hate. we were not chosen for this act of violence because we can darn racism because we are an enclave for extremism we were chosen

for the very fact that we are none of these things because we represent diversity kindness compassion for home for those who share our values fuge for those who need it and those values i can assure you will not and cannot be shaken by this attack when as you heard there from new zealand's prime minister one of the suspects arrested was an australian and national four people have been arrested one of them an australian national information that was confirmed by australia's prime minister's morrison we grow. we are shocked we are appalled we are. and we stand here and condemn absolutely the tech that could to die by an

hindered but three connected to this attack who are currently in custody one of which has publicly stated that they were born. these are people who i would describe as having extremist views that have absolutely no place in new zealand and in fact have no place in the world. while we do not have any reason to believe at this stage they are in the other suspects we are not assuming that at this age the joint intelligence group has been deployed and police pushing all of the resources into the situation the defense forces are currently transporting additional police staff to the region our national security threat level has being lifted from low to high this i want to assure people is to ensure that all i can say he's responding and the most

firstly could you give us any more details or any updates on the investigation or what's happened since we've heard from the prime minister is there any new information on the investigation that you know of. no the details have been sketchy so i've been learning just as much as the rest of the world has at the same time same with my counselor culpability same as the media it really has been and i think faced the prime minister abhisit destroyed it is no new zealand's darkest and i would most certainly can cope with it but we've been learning it as we've gone and originally began that we thought that no one would do it you know who did it could be dozens and just just recently we've heard that it could be up to forty so it's just just horrifying in a place like new zealand where we pride ourselves being you know one of the safest places in the world that's right it's an everyone has spoken has made a point of saying that this is unprecedented can you give us a sense of there your reaction to this and the reaction of your community. it's
3:57 pm
really horrified you know i think everyone's walking around in a daze it was eight years ago that we've been through a devastating earthquake people are still feeling the effects of that whether it with their physical play or even insurance issues which still dragged on today so this community the city the second largest city in new zealand has been through a tremendous ordeal like years ago which they still feeling the effects of so to go through. through this terror attack you know except the most disgusting violence you could ever major in as is just horrifying in a place that we pride ourselves on our on our love on our tolerance and our community spirit so i think everyone is just gulp snicked getting can you give us an idea of how things given the security situation right now how people are feeling the insecurity now surrounding the city. look i think people
3:58 pm
have dawned on the fic that new zealand will never be the same again i think national security will never be the same again the way that perhaps we have been about things in the past and you look and you say well ok it's in america and bouts of europe but i think there's always been this unwritten belief that it just doesn't happen in new zealand people don't want to say that because they don't want to jinx it but i think everyone that's visits to the country feels that way so you know it isn't like to repeat things about. it's just staggering that we could witness you know such scenes of height and violence like that and you know particularly tolerant country and peaceful city like cross-stitch so everyone is i think still in disbelief i think at the moment they try and they want to be with the families they're giving the kids a big i'm going to have a young eighteen month old son and pregnant wife at the moment we're at home and we're just glad that we haven't been caught up in this but school children have just have been in lockdown so a lot of people public buildings out christchurch city civic facilities have all

been locked down and only recently has that has that been lifted so only now that we children coming home to the parents not be the getting a lot of love from the parents that your prime minister has made a point to say that new zealand has always been a safe place for emigrants are you concerned that this feeling could change and particularly with immigrant communities having in targeted in this attack. look i think that is inevitable but i think we also need to be cognizant of the think that there are bad people everywhere and no one is immune to that i don't think that new zealand is necessarily more interest today or tomorrow in a general sense than what it was yesterday there are just four individuals as far as we are currently just downright evil down to the to the bar and one of them is astronomy and three others unsure where they're from but unfortunately this just this isn't that kind of humanity that unfortunately there are just some people like
4:00 pm
this and unfortunately that struck christchurch today in the community has been rocked by this and we need to be the same again and that animal can tell us about the muslim community and christ terry. where we have a large number of immigrants and particularly muslims that come in and ironically that they love christ which they love new zealand because it's a safe free tolerant country in and says a so we have we have a large immigrant population i'm sure that they will. of shaken into the core but it's not just isolated to this community building on the tolerance of it i think we know where we want to connect to them most of them doesn't matter what rights will create anyone as you know these are our brothers and sisters with an outlook of community and and we feel for them but and we're absolutely devastated for them embarrass that this is happened but but still so unclear about where to for me and so this is just i'm better of hours after it's happened people are coming to terms with it i think there's a new normal for.
