desperately needing treatment sanctions are hurting venezuela's most vulnerable. new zealand's prime minister has been meeting and attempting to comfort people at the heart of the mosque shooting said i thank she's described as terrorism just seen here in black laid flowers with members of the muslim community in the capital wellington it was the worst mass killing in new zealand's peace time history the country's threat level remains high. earlier police confirm the number of people killed has risen to fifty another victim was found during the removal of bodies from the crime scenes in christ church detectives say twenty eight year old suspect brenton terrance acted alone as they no longer believe the three other people arrested were involved israelian man has been charged with murder accusing an

reverends have denounced hatred and racism. wayne hay joins us now live on the stand at the hospital doctors have been giving a press conference what are they been saying. yes we heard a bit there from the chief of surgery at the christchurch hospital behind me which is where all of the victims were taken after the attack on friday and he very much went into detail about the types of injuries that they have been treating saying that many all of the victims who are still in this some thirty five thirty four injured still in christchurch hospital they are facing multiple surgeries so this is an ongoing situation they also updated the number of critically injured people there at twelve in christchurch hospital so of course the ultimate fear is that that death toll which in itself has gone up on sunday to fifty could go even higher there is an additional person in a critical condition that is a young child who was flown to

a specialist children's hospital in new zealand's largest city of but he was going into detail about some of the situations that they faced on friday and continue to face and he was asked also with the christchurch earthquake that occurred in two thousand and ten and two thousand and eleven of course many people killed in that natural disaster somehow prepared them for what they faced on friday and he said yes they did the scenario certainly help them cope with the pressure and the stress of what they were seeing yes the injuries were certainly very different that they were treating they were treating gunshot wounds of course for the most part on friday and continued to do so but the scenario he said certainly helped them in their response on friday and the prime minister has been promising changes when it comes to gun control what's on the cards. yes she's been very strong on that very quick is well to respond it was inevitable i guess that the debate the discussion in the wake of such a situation such

a massacre of this proportion would turn to the issue of gun control laws and it did very quickly she is saying that the law will be changed and that is a comment that's been echoed by other people including the attorney general here in new zealand saying that in fact a step further that semiautomatic weapons will be banned that seems like the obvious next step i think most new zealanders perhaps would be surprised given that we have very few gun related incidents certainly on this scale it's never happened and most people would probably be surprised that you can get semiautomatic weapons legally in new zealand and it seems that was the case with the main suspect involved on friday so that would be the logical next step for parliament to debate this to pass a bill that would ban simulate a medic weapons the prime minister just under a doing who we're expecting to hear from very soon again said that she's also concerned that they could have been modifications made to some of the guns that

were used on friday so that will also come under scrutiny all right thanks so much wayne hay there and as wayne just mentioned christ church hospital's chief of surgery spoke about the two thousand and eleven earthquake which killed one hundred eighty five people and injured thousands here's more of what he had to say. i don't think there's any doubt the earthquake did have a hearing on it you know. the old adage practice makes perfect weeks and a lot of things and that's part of their process as we live in this case with the event exercises every year the ministry will run. we've had i guess the most significant experience of this in new zealand but the true of the years quake experience in two thousand and thirteen two thousand and eleven so . you know we've been there we've done that well earlier we spoke to bob parker the mayor of christ church when that earthquake happened i do think
6:07 am
in a way although the earthquakes of course were numerous there wasn't just one we had a series of earthquakes that ran for really for eighteen months almost two years that continued to remind people of what they had been through when they didn't know if the next one would be bigger than the one they're just had this is a single terrible incident it's a different sort of event in a way when you think about it if you go back to the earthquake it was physically destructive for every single person this is just targeted a small group so in a sense it's more sort of intellectually more socially destructive but the thing that you've heard from others is that we've learned as a community how to fold around each other in these situations and i was out walking through the city last night different sight seeing people bringing flowers the genuine emotion the genuine support and the desire to to wrap their arms around

finish my update today by a game passing on my deepest gratitude and thanks on behalf of the whole country to the place the feast responders the hospital staff who i meet use to day right through to the teaches many of whom keep these students in lockdown on friday and who will be dealing with the fallout from that for a long time to come i'm happy to take questions. at look as i indicated to you stet i have thought that vice in fact died so that advice quite early on i'm so awaiting receipt of it what i can say though is that absolutely charges and the trial itself will happen in new zealand as for the remainder i'm seeking advice. i

don't want to preempt anything be he will susan lee feis the justice system of new zealand for the tear or ist attack that he has committed here. i think it's not something that i can give advice on obviously that that's an operational issue and at this time i can't give anything for you the details on that raghad i have had an indication that it will be through the charges lie but the as to the specifics about as i cannot provide them. just come. it will be a ten hour i was one of more than three she recipients of a minute manifesto that was mild to hours nine minutes before the attack took place it did not include a location that did not include specific dates house on advise that within two minutes of its receipt at least smile office it was conveyed directly to palin

mitri security but the assurance i want to go visit head it provided details that could have been edited on immediately it would have been but there are unfortunately would not be such details and that if it pretty chilly. to receive it in a broader think it was i understand it was two are generally not like it was it did not go directly to him to me i did not directly receive it and as i say it went over through she a mouse including mating media including the palin me tree tourism disk quite widely but again the fact that there was an ideological manifesto with extreme views attached to this attack of course is deeply disturbing. sorry have you read the elements yes i have

heard from. you we having at we will have a conversation a cabinet tomorrow a discussion around any potential potential or form obviously i've already indicated they will be changes to our gun laws there will be more detailed discussion with cabinet tomorrow i have good insane reports but as yet unverified of potential activity but as yet i haven't received official advice as to whether or not these been any change in and just says that's something i have asked for for follow up information on. in the main. i want to get to the bottom of whether or not that has indeed it could. have the the lethal. say that. again.
6:25 am
we cannot be due to from the work that we need to do on our gun laws in new zealand they need to change regardless of what activity may or may not have happened with gun retailers they will change. again as i've already indicated there will be changes to our gun laws we will be discussing some of the more detailed policy elements at cabinet tomorrow and of course i have had conversations directly with the d.p.p. prime minister as you would expect already but again i'll leave until we've had those policy discussions before i give you through the detail. of what. you know. we will have an agent
6:26 am
say up date for all members to mars i expect that we will have a wide ranging discussion there are a couple of specific items that i wish to discuss directly gun policy is one of them but. the issue around watch lists and how we can ensure we give assurances to the public that our agencies have the tools sane age all of that will be on the table tomorrow. high. wife. extremism is of course an issue that agencies focused on and aware of and as i've said for many months now because in particular of the global suits that we have seen in the

music to viz that they have been very active in that space but again as i say we need to make sure that we are looking more broadly at the work of i didn't say he's not just our intelligence services. at our borders to ensure that we've taken a comprehensive approach and do everything we can to prevent any kind of activity or action like this in the future has to give in with you know at that high level of. three he's do we need you looking at him with a more broad daylight to say than they've to to up the security status as well but . i really rely on the advice of. the says and i can say yes to provide advice really directly to us and of course the ministry of foreign affairs in trite as to what might not might be nice to siri i haven't received anything specific to that nine. hours.
6:28 am
i believe sorry. i would need to verify if that is indeed the case but my understanding is what we received did not have those two towers. if we could've if we could've absolutely we would've looked again i reiterate this was received by . the recipients nine minutes before guns were fired within two minutes of its or state it went to our parliamentary security but again the vice we have from police. actually by the time any of that a mouse and a details could have been passed on they were already receiving most one one calls and responding and someone was the entire can into custody within thirty six minutes we have a very specific protocol around when we were safe material like this that it does
6:29 am
go for immediate response to parliamentary security that's always been the protocol in place when we receive threatening material. such is the protocol that has been in place i would need to ask from an operational level bart police and security why that is the immediate response but that is the protocol that someplace would we find out so i was the question. my my preliminary advice is that the team thousand dollars that is available could be used for those purposes. again it would be obviously up to the individual discretion of family members as to whether or not that's what they would be seeking but my understanding is it could be used for that purpose.
6:30 am
i have not but i understand look they could be certainly circumstances where. that might be seen i haven't received any direct advice or suggestion of the need to get to a case that the stage in fact is we can directly on the ground so we'll be available and not connecting people directly for consular assistance for instance they obvious it is. certainly if that was an issue i would want to hear about and say with there or not they would arrangements that could be directly made for for that purpose.
6:31 am
look i mean it's something that i actually would want to sic some advice on and to him some of those distinctions because of course when it comes to extremism and inciting violence demarcation met between domestic and international was as i would have thought in some cases difficult so i would i would want to ask agencies before giving you a definitive answer beer but as i say as i've said before in this case obviously very close cooperation between new zealand and australia. do we have an unconfirmed. we have provided a provisional less directly to families that has not being formally released for the fact that it is not a formal lest it is however something that the families were asking for until formal identification has taken place that lists won't be released. i can i cannot say that question. yes.
6:32 am
and again we have people working closely on the ground particularly red cross who are able to reconcile the information that they have both about who's in hospital on the missing list obviously. teams are weakening as quickly as they can on victim identification. obviously in these cases a number of. sensitivity around formal identification. as you can imagine this was a particularly violent act. i cannot confirm anyone into we have formal identification.
6:33 am
any other guy yes i can confirm that we have a delegation from touquet who will be visiting new zealand to bring their. exploration directly of solidarity to the muslim community here and we welcome that at this stage it's not clear. the number of to kish nationals affected but that is obviously a significant muslim country who were short spray says solidarity with new zealand and we welcome that. and i haven't had direct advice on that look i wouldn't rule it out for commemorative services for instance but i haven't any had a formal indication at this stage.
