chaos in the french capital as protests against the president and his reforms turn violent. new zealand's top police officer says there will be a highly visible presence across the country as people return to work on monday after mosque attacks fifty people were killed in those attacks and christchurch that came in a commissioner says there will be extra police around schools businesses and places of worship prime minister just in the ardor and says she's been working with the muslim community to ensure the victims' bodies are returned as soon as possible for the burial and they hope to have them back by wednesday well the prime minister has given more details about the suspect the killers lengthy manifesto which was emailed to her just moments before the attack. i was one of
10:02 am
more than fish the recipients of a mina manifesto that was my old out nine minutes before the attack took place it did not include a location it did not include specific dates house i'm advised that within two minutes of its receipt in least my office it was conveyed directly to parliamentary security but the assurance i want to go visit had it provided details that could have been edited on immediately it would have been but there unfortunately were not such details in their e-mail. now earlier in the day the prime minister is seen here and black a flower said members of the muslim community in the capital wellington victims of the shootings and attacks he's described as terrorism it was the worst mass killing in new zealand says tree and the country's threat level remains high and tributes
10:03 am
are being held across new zealand to honor the victims of the attacks as the country mourns families are preparing to bury their loved ones under thomas has more from christchurch on the outskirts of christ church they are digging graves fifty i need it now the official number killed rose on sunday when police clearing bodies from the two mosques attacked found one they had not been aware of before. a list of victims names have been shared with. the police commissioner confirmed that the man they have in custody brenton tyrant is the only suspect in friday's attacks three others arrested shortly after they took place a not now believed to have been involved. a witness the immediate aftermath of the attacks he was driving past the al gore mosque and saw people running he jumped out of his call to help the wounded and the dying it was

10:05 am
the incident require more surgeries as a consequence of the complexity of the nature of the injuries in a christ church where house volunteers are giving their time and florists their flowers to make bouquet to lay on coffins each one represents a life a family member that wherever mom or day its. own brother or sister. sound if it's smart. there will be fifty bouquets for fifty newly dug graves i'm sure thomas al-jazeera cross church. rituals have been taking place across new zealand this is the scene right now in central christchurch not too far from the mosque on eight pm sunday in new zealand and to be have wayne hay our correspondent in the city and he joins us from christchurch hospital so there
10:06 am
had been as expect a lot of high level discussions between from the government the security they're all giving press conference conferences give us an idea of what's being said and also set the scene where you are. yes well as you mentioned this is the main hospital here in christchurch where all the injured were taken on friday after that shooting happened at the two mosques in this city and there are still more than thirty wounded inside that hospital as andrew mentioned and there are twelve people who are still in critical condition so all obviously the ultimate concern as that death toll of fifty which went up by one on sunday may go up even further i've been inside the hospital in the last couple of hours it's a very busy scene and they're obviously very tired medical staff as we heard from the chief surgeon earlier on sunday saying that the situation the circumstances
10:07 am
that they have been dealing with have been pretty traumatic to say the least right from friday through until now with many people requiring multiple surgeries there are many family members in there as well of course supporting those who are wounded and that is where the bodies of the victims have also been taken the two mosques in christchurch are still very much crime scenes the forensic investigation is still going on inside those buildings but the bodies have now been removed they are all inside the christchurch hospital and one development we may see later on on sunday is the release of the first of the bodies back to the family members and that has been something that has been causing some concern among the family members of the victims about the speed of that process because of course according to islamic customs they would like those bodies as soon as possible after death so they can be buried well that simply hasn't been possible the police are saying look we've been
10:08 am
working with the leaders in the muslim community in christchurch we understand the customs surrounding the religion but we're going as fast as we can the other concern from the families is that a complete confirmed list of the people that have been identified as being killed in the shootings has not been released so addressing those concerns when the within the last few hours was new zealand's deputy police commissioner. many of the families know. there's although they have not been formally identified they are missing a few preview to see. focus to give their loved ones back and to follow the cultural traditions such as the washington showing of the loved ones and we have made promises. to carry out the through through the cultural issues so clearly a very difficult situation for the police there is this and best occasion really is
10:09 am
in its early days so many questions still about what unfolded on friday and exactly what the process is going forward this is a community is still very much in shock still mourning the victims of that shooting and it will be that way for some time yet one of the questions has been about the police response to this was it quick enough or the police have responded to that saying that after the first emergency call came in while the shooting was taking place in the very early stages of it they responded within six minutes of that first call being made they apprehended the main suspect in this shooting brinton tarrant in thirty six minutes thirty six minutes after that first call came in the apprehension the arrest was made by two police officers from a rural community outside of christchurch no shots were fired in that incident he had weapons. explosive devices in that car as well and they were able to arrest him
10:10 am
alive so clearly that seems to have been a relatively quick response to this situation on friday. thanks wayne thanks for that very comprehensive update. daniel darker is professor of political science at the university of waikato and he joins us now by skype from hamilton in new zealand good to have you on the program and i'm going to get right to it there has been discussed many discussions and conversations before about tightening gotten laws in new zealand but why has it taken this incident the shooting and the killing of fifty people for the government to take serious steps. it is true that there have been a number struggles over the past you know one thousand nine hundred ninety eight after a mass killing thirteen people. there were changes made since then it has been difficult to amend the nine hundred eighty three arms act however i think that this will
10:11 am
provide some impetus preclude lee however the changes to the arms act have been pretty used in terms of a private member's bill and have failed in new zealand its interest significance are not registered but rather the gun users and owners are registered once they pass a very strict betting process richard pryor's to. people to advise on their character. requires that they take some sort of gun training course even then. if they achieve zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero acceptance they can accumulate almost as many guns as they would like and do you believe that's what happened in this case with this attacker in particular despite going through that
10:12 am
rigorous as you say examination before being able to acquire this large number of guns. well it's an interesting situation coming up in the last few hours are information about this person's connections with bruce rifle club in milton on the south. this is. a former soldier who thought about joining this club was really appalled at their attitude and their. association with their members it's possible this person had some help in bed just turn. although he had only been in the country for a few months this is allowed there are four others who come in and go hunting for example but he wants the firearms license is
10:13 am
granted there really are not very many restrictions it is true that military style so many automatic weapons required specific permits but to be brought but not religious tradition which is an odd situation. professor daniels or kirk great to have you on the program thank you very much for your insights thank you ok we'll have more from new zealand later in the program but for now let's move on to some other news at least thirty one people have died in eastern zimbabwe as tropical cycle and it die pushes west from muslim baek more than forty people are now believed to be missing after homes bridges and roads were swept away in the flash floods the damage and bad weather are slowing the rescue efforts of this thomas already killed about one hundred people across malawi and muslim baek tens

of thousands of people have been forced from their homes. you know i feel but. i saw a woman being hit by debris it's not safe for people walking in the situation is very chaotic. scene can move in they said majority of houses ninety five percent collapsed was precariously built up or materials. our correspondent in central mozambique since the cyclamen mozambique's coast where we are going to wrench the reigns in the strong winds rivers of swollen power lines are blown down cyclons are common in the indian ocean at this time of year but few of them hit land and this one has been particularly destructive because it came ashore at mozambique fourth largest city they were and we're still three hundred kilometers from there we're trying to reach there and that's not easy you can see the kind of damage cyclons done even here a whole bridge completely washed away because of this wall of the river because the

enormous amount of rainfall just within the last day or two so maybe trucks trying to pass it to try and reach people in bay where they've had to turn around and take another route in the city of all communications are off the airports closed the power is down so it's very hard to find out what the extent of the damage there actually is with no communications of course and transport routes a lot it's very difficult to find out what's going on also for the people who are there to get the help that they need and ever in asia at least fifty people have died in flash floods in the indonesian province of pop for at least fifty others were injured french away in the provincial capital chair for a trigger at the. floodwaters have receded leaving a trail of mud fallen trees and property. there are plenty more still ahead and. we're going to her. finally rate laid to rest why years after the georgia

10:20 am
the horrific events in christ church and its connection to it brenton tarrant spent at least the first twenty years of his life in grafton before travelling around the world he went to the local school and worked as a personal trainer in a gym his alleged attack on two mosques in christ church last week has deeply disturbed religious leaders in his home town we got insight to you know that you know maybe we all think harry you know. all of the people that are going to leave the mountain the most community in christ church the mood here is somber this is a community grappling to come to terms with one of their own being a suspect in the worst mass killing in new zealand's history it's just a time for the community to gather and just kind of be together get strength from solidarity and hopefully put our roots down deep and sign are we not that's that's

not us what happened and what this guy did is not his not crofton parishioners who know the tyrant family say it's well respected and he's been here for generations like a pipe and farmer. what did you think when you heard that someone from grafton was involved. i wish. others had a message for christchurch people can just reach out and say we. are coming out but you know we just. at present. and hope. you can get some to closure. while the town family has deep roots here community members say it's keeping a low profile following the attack in christchurch we've managed to speak with people who knew brenton tarrant well they say they don't want to appear on camera because they don't want to be associated with the killer of fifty people they say
