and. i think it's very vague but at the same time i think it leaves a very very open door here so i don't think republicans should be gloating quite yet as they have been today i have received multiple e-mails from the republican party stating that this is a win for all americans but this is also you know the witch hunt is over deeming this as a witch hunt seems to be completely inappropriate seeing as this was something that was raised to an investigative level that was you know something that the president was dealing with for goodness the first two and a half years now of his presidency so i think when we when we look at this we do really have to think about the severity of it and recognize that this isn't a win for america today it's sad that this ever even had to have happened with that said i do think that again there is a window open here for there to be further indictments now i know that there weren't any in this report but people have been indicted interim circles so i do think moving forward this will be referred to either congress or to other
11:01 am
courtrooms across the country such as the southern district of new york where we know that there's a pending investigation in litigation against people interim circle where he is named as individual number one yeah i don't trust them so those are those are those investigations potentially more problematic for trump going ahead. i would i would say yes i think that this investigation while at this point again a very vague conclusion here i do think it opens up doors for this to really continue on in the court room as a legal battle which means that in any of those districts such as the southern district of new york where again he's being referred to as individual number one that tells you that this is a serious issue and that he's going to continue to face these types of investigations and potential litigation for those in his circle moving forward what do you make of the democrats cole or rather their suggestion that the it's really general can't be trusted in saying that he has a record of bias against the smaller investigation specifically. i mean it's pretty
11:02 am
hard to combat that seeing as the president himself has said that the bar is in his corner and that was one of the reasons why he wanted to select him as attorney general and this was all during barres nomination to attorney general so i do think that the democrats do have a leg to stand on with that at the same time it is trump's attorney general so when we were reading this four page you know kind of document here that basically highlights the quotes of barr and rosenstein not of muller i think there's a lot to consider there which is again what muller actually said in the report so i do think it would be important for transparency to be done here which means that bar should release the full report and i know that he left a very very small paragraph in this document that talks about that but i do think it would be good for him to pursue that avenue moving forward so we the public can see what is in it congress can make their determinations and deliberations and see
11:03 am
what they need to do in order to move this forward whether or not that becomes impeachment or whether or not that becomes a further investigation where house committee takes that on i guess we'll see moving forward all right thanks for joining us from d.c. once more head on the al-jazeera news hour including a good will a year we'll have more from kenya where drought is threatening a million people with starvation. trump card benjamin netanyahu has a sleeve ahead of his appearance at the conference in washington. in spore in germany to get a much needed win to one of their worst years in living memory peter will be here with more on the. first time lines pro-military party and its main opposition are neck and neck an early election results it's the first parliamentary polls since a military coup five years ago with most of the ballots counted.
11:04 am
charles party has seven point six million votes about five hundred thousand more than the main office party. florence louis is in chiang mai the hometown of exiled former prime minister talks and shit a lot but first we'll cross over to scott heiler and bangkok to give us an update scott on the overnight preliminary election results coming in that in there really hasn't been too much movement on those numbers that you just read through but what's interesting and neck and neck is really the best way to characterize what we're seeing right now between falling flat out which is the pro military government party current prime minister is their prime minister candidate and then put die that is again led by exiled former prime minister taksin shinawatra they are pretty much neck and neck and i say that because you know you see that in the last numbers are ahead in the popular vote but who is ahead
11:05 am
in the seat vote and that is really the more important number because that determines who will be forming the next government here in thailand but you know we still have some time to go we have about five hours before we expect a press conference from the election commission to release unofficial results we were expecting that on sunday night that didn't happen and then the counting was paused overnight but we're seeing things will probably hopefully kick back in in these hours before this press conference there's a website that they have that we can see the as the as the numbers are tabulated but again unofficial figures were hoping in about five hours time bring some clarity to that but again neck and neck with these two top parties one is surprised though two is future forward now this is a brand new party this election cycle they really targeted youth voters the young voters the first time voters are about seven million first time voters since the last election coming of age since the last election about eight years ago they are in a strong third position right now so hopefully
11:06 am
a couple hours will have some clarity to right now it's looking like it was last night with those top two parties neck and neck and how are people feeling there if this is not the results that was really expected at this point. no there there a couple of surprises particularly see that. the pro military government party doing so well they're expected to do pretty well but not as well as they're doing right now i was expected to be well on top and they're not so that is a surprise so reaction on the streets it's interesting to obviously depends on what party they're supporting determines how they're reacting today but gun of you know a sobering response from those who maybe some support to a tie or a future forward they're saying look the deck was stacked with the military party going in so we kind of expected this we just need to work through this there was one that said it was actually quite interesting that they are looking forward to when the governments formed and then they can hopefully there's the side of the
11:07 am
government they support will start to contest the power of the military in the new government in the new parliament so kind of gearing up already even before the unofficial results come out to get ready for that for that battle and others just kind of reserved to the fact that hey look this is how it went this is a democratic process so kind of accepting the results but again we'll see how that that kind of meets out over the hours to come and then we get the unofficial results and toward the end of the day then we'll wait until the official results will come probably in the days and weeks to come all right we'll speak to them later on scott hyland thank you let's not bring florence luis joining us from china my and that's a north of thailand of course a stronghold of the el cid leader in exile tax and really have not lost an election florida since two thousand and one so what is the reaction to the preliminary results coming in. that's right you know in the north and northeast of thailand in the past the way these provinces are voted they've been
11:08 am
able to determine the government and the lead of the thailand but this election it appears that the support from these provinces is not enough and supporters of events the main party linked to thailand and also seen as the main challenger to. the military backed party will support as they say they are surprised and shocked especially as opinion polls that suggest that it would be in the lead not enough perhaps to form a government on its own but certainly but the chance to form a coalition government now and party leaders of high initial comment suggest that they may not accept the results so readily the secretary general of said while they were waiting for official results he also suggested that well there were irregularities in voting and he mentioned that they would like to check and look at the disqualified and spoiled ballots now according to the election commission there were about five point five percent of votes that were disqualified including over
11:09 am
some overseas votes that did not reach thailand in time so overall supporters and allies of taksin of per thai party it's the reaction is one of disbelief and shock all right and is there any chance at all that blue tie and other parties may be able to cobble together a coalition. well that's uncertain at the moment but it's also looking quite unlikely now and they are trailing behind hollande pressure out in terms of popular vote that's completely unexpected results in terms of constituency seats they are in the lead but only just so by and ten seats that's the three hundred fifty seats in the lower house those are the constituency seats but then there are also another one hundred fifty seats that make up the rest of the lower house and this these seats are located to parties based on the number of votes received but it's through quite a complex formula that basically handicaps bigger parties such as per tie and don't
11:10 am
forget there are the other two hundred fifty military appointed senators who make up the entire upper house who then get a say in picking the prime minister so it's looking quite unlikely that it. will be able to form part of government is looking more likely that the military backed party will be able to be part of government but with coalition partners for and so we thank you not people in australia living in the path of cycling veronica have been urged to stay indoors as this storm crosses over the region port hedland is one of the towns that bore the brunt the winds gusts in the area were up to one hundred sixty kilometers an hour a red alert has now been lifted let's get an update rob mcbride is right there in port hedland what's happening. that's why during just within the last hour or so as you mentioned there this red alert has finally been lifted it's still in place it has to be said further down the coast from here where veronica is still making it says self felt
11:11 am
a bit here or at least people have been allowed now to get out this red alert basically is a lockdown it means you stay put you take shelter from the storm and people have been in that position for the best part of two days now if i can stand back and let john get a shot here this is something we haven't seen for those two days here in this part of the western australia coastline this is the coast road here people are actually now out on it police are going out working out which areas are now safe which areas are flooded we are expecting of course still more rains from this storm system possibly more flooding but it has finally allowed people to go out and assess the damage from this finally the storm is still making itself felt here although the effects of it are gradually reducing but that's one of the problems with this storm during is it has lasted so long it is lingered along the coast is tracked along the coast basically scouring this whole area and normally we do expect these storms to
11:12 am
go inland and dissipate very quickly it is further south from here it's expected to go west finally into the indian ocean and people here at least will be glad to see the back of it during the cyclon trevor had already touched down and with this cyclons i can veronica what might be the long term impact of these storms. that's right there we did a really quite unprecedented you have two storms at the same time the long term impacts here that will be some damage but we haven't heard of major infrastructure damage just thankfully no serious casualties possibly the big dislocation has been in the northern territory where as you mentioned cycling travel touched down a number of indigenous communities were displaced thousands of people to be evacuated from that area they will be expecting to know when they can go back home but coming back here to port hedland there is another factor here and that's the
11:13 am
economic impact port hedland is very important if i can ask john to look at the over the horizon here this is a rise in these usually full of bulk carrier ships these the ships that carry iron ore from this part of western australia it is a very big contributor to the steel industry and in fact some people are reckoning that there might be a follow on impact to steel production in china normally the horizon is full of ships all of those ships are now way off out at sea waiting to know when they can come back in and resume carrying of iron ore off to the world market so it may only be a temporary impact but it is i think a timely reminder that the experts keep warning goes there is not only a human trice to these severe extreme weather events there is of course also a dollar price tag dury ok rob mcbride thank you ten years government has warned more than a million people are risking starvation as a severe drought grips the northern half of the country rainfall has been low for
11:14 am
months killing crops and leaving people on able to feed themselves properly only last year kenya was in the group for its worst flash flooding in recent memory thousands of hectares of farmland were destroyed half a million people lost their homes the government denies that anyone has died from hunger yet but critics believe as many as twenty people have starved to death catherine sawyer reports from turkana county. it's weltering in the more i village as from this dry desolate land here to receive food aid from the humanitarian agency world vision there's a drought in kenya and the government says up to a million people in thirteen of the country's forty seven counties need argent help hiders in the northwest region of two cana a some of the worst affected here they receive saugor rice bins and cooking oil to last them at least a few weeks a lot about i'm going to go i'm very happy to see this food and make sure it lasts longer for my four children before you go away from community centers the more
11:15 am
desperate the situation gets at he can loria band ses how fourteen year old son long narrow died last month from manu tradition. we did not have food so you just used to add food he grew week by the day until he died that's when sam when we first met us were the only volunteer health worker in the village shows as well long hours buried the government denies others have also died of hunger thing and then i'll go with you was just bones he had never come to the health center for any treatment of any other ailment he had just been eating wild fruits and nothing else . wild food which grows near rivers is what you can is return to when they can't find other food at the cans has spent is doing its best to feed his remaining family until more help comes. we just need help if we don't get it then we'll just continue eating the fruit and wait to die there's nothing else i can do the

government blames the drought on the drains the crisis is made worse by locusts invasion last year i mean all diseases and conflict many in this village escaped another area after cattle rustlers attacked them and stored there anymore it's may day now we've been in this village for a couple of hours and we haven't seen many people making break first lunch most of them are saying they don't have anything for dinner as well they say that they've run out of food aid they received at the beginning of the month looking male quis boiling the last of her cheek i borrowed from a neighbor of the sleeping hungry yesterday i know i'll have to share the food with those who don't have she tells us. in this village and many others that are harder to reach time is of the essence i delayed response to their plight will only make things worse catherine soy al-jazeera. northwest kenya. the

plans to keep new zealand syphon to assure ensure that this never happens again last week on may eighteenth of march cabinet agreed to establish an inquiry into the christchurch mosques tira a take today cabinet a grade the inquiry will be a royal commission. while new zealand is and muslim communities around the world grieving and showing compassion for one another they are also quite rightly asking questions on how the steere attack was able to happen here this includes questions around the accessibility of semiautomatic weapons the role social media has played generally in the focus of the intelligence and security services there are questions i too have asked and of course one says too as well and short the inquiry will look at what could have or should have been done to prevent the attack it will
11:19 am
inquire into the individual and his activities before the terrorist attack including of course a look at agencies would look at the actions of the the g.c.s. bay police customs immigration and any other relevant government departments or agencies and then next two weeks the precise terms over france will be finalized including the lead for the royal commission and its generation what i can say today is that there will be a focus on whether our intelligence community was concentrating its resources appropriately and whether they were any reports that could or should have been a lucid them to this attack it is important that no stone is left on tune to the get to the bottom of how this act of terrorism accrued and what if any opportunities we had to stop it included. in particular as i've said many times before i want recommendations on how any such a check in the future can be stopped i do want to say that royal commissions are
11:20 am
usually reserved for mehta's of the gravest public importance and it is clearly the appropriate form of inquiry for this instance. i am pleased to share with you today though that in the coming week at the end of the week on sunday i will be traveling to china i will be in beijing for meetings with president xi jinping and premier. so that is the live scene right now from wellington new zealand prime minister just. speaking live having held a cabinet meeting and this of course more than a week after a gunman killed fifty people in two mosques in christ church and what she said is that there is an inquiry now that is going ahead to look at what could have done or what should have been done to prevent that attack that took place in christ church
11:21 am
and the inquiry will also focus on the intelligence community and she's looking for recommendations on how such attacks can be prevented in the future war updates from new zealand and when we get them. for the time being we'll tell you about boeing because it's summoned hundreds of pilots and regulators as it tries to manage a crisis that's cost twenty billion dollars a market share after two crashes it wants to return its seven three seven max planes to commercial service following a world wide ban boeing has been at the center of two fatal aircraft crosses in five months orders worth more than five hundred billion dollars are in question while the seven three seven max jets remain grounded. still ahead on the al-jazeera news hour it was already one of the arab world's poorest countries we'll look at what years of war have done to yemen's economy. will also find out why mexico's president who promised more help for the vulnerable is counseling social programs.

living on the top stories on the al-jazeera news our u.s. special counsel robert muller his report has found neither donald trump nor any of his officials knowingly colluded with russia during the twenty six the election campaign but the report didn't draw a conclusion on whether president trump attempted to obstruct the course of justice thailand's pro-military party and its main opposition put tire neck and neck an early election results it's the first parliamentary poll since a military coup five years ago. kenya's government is warning more than a. people are at risk of starvation as parts of the country endure a severe drought conditions in thirteen counties are continuing to worsen with widespread vegetation. the leaders of framing india and honduras say they will recognize jerusalem as israel's capital following the lead if u.s.

president donald trump the announcements were made at the annual american israel public affairs committee conference in washington romania plans to move its embassy to jerusalem. open an office there for trade and cooperation the move has been welcomed by israeli politicians but will anger palestinians who want east jerusalem as the capital of a future state now the top rivals for israel's prime ministerial ship are both in the united states ahead of elections in april benny gantz is a serious contender to benjamin netanyahu he'll be hoping to create a strong impression at the american israel public affairs committee on monday stephanie decker reports from jerusalem on the campaign now unfolding in the u.s. . two men bashing it out for the israeli leadership one a political veteran the other a military one but a political novice both now in the united states to address apac the powerful jewish lobby group at the state of this route that. prime minister netanyahu knows
11:27 am
apac well for benny gantz it's a first but he is familiar with washington because a lot of people don't know about that he goes because he lived in washington he was a military attache he worked in the embassy he's been on capitol hill he knows these people dance is due to give a major speech to apac on monday but he could be overshadowed by netanyahu who is meeting president trump the same day so it will be interesting to see what exact goodies president from give them both in words and deeds meaning the fact that it's and you know will sit there in the oval office in a wing chair with president trump and president trump will say i'm looking forward to working with it and you know for the next you know four years or more is going to be significant for both men these really prime minister already brings with him a sense of victory trump tweeted last week that it was time the u.s. recognize the occupied golan heights as israeli territory as part of the syrian golan heights or annexed by israel in one nine hundred eighty one and israel has

always maintained that this area is vital to its security. a lot of israelis feel the same way with the golan heights without the belied currently we know that it's also spread digic point for us because this country is a very small very small who are surrounded by people that unfortunately don't like them so much as they live here having the u.s. acknowledge israeli sovereignty in the golan heights is something the israeli prime minister has been lobbying for for years by recognizing the occupied golan heights as israeli territory the u.s. president donald trump is giving a major political victory to benjamin netanyahu and the timing of such a major announcement on the eve of what is a hotly contested israeli election is seen by many as a public and. horsemen of trump for netanyahu for yet another term as prime minister the opinion polls show that it will be a tight race both men aiming to impress in the united states hoping their performances abroad will win them votes back home stephanie decker or jazeera in

the occupied golan heights monday marks the four years since the saudi u.a.e. like coalition intervened in yemen to support the government in its war against the rebels the conflict has killed at least ten thousand people and led to what the u.n. describes as the world's worst humanitarian crisis for groups or has more. the markets of sun are the ones at the crossroads of trade in the middle east. today these traders and market one of the oldest of the city are selling whatever little local farmers can produce prices a steep and out of reach for most the few who can buy are often in debt. and with a smile has a family of eight he's among the millions of yemenis for whom the war has meant sleeping on an empty stomach. the war destroyed the gulf arabs and the saudis and
11:30 am
the u.a.e. destroyed us food prices are ten times higher because the yemeni real has no value at present yemen central bank is split between government controlled aden and who the controlled so now saudi arabia publicly pledged a loan of two billion dollars but only to the bank in aden to keep the currency afloat as of december it had received only three hundred forty million dollars the money from the bank in aden pay salaries of government workers most of yemen's workforce. but five hundred thousand civil servants and who the areas haven't been paid it through here as. black markets like these are try being in summer and in aden it's beyond imagination and. there's a shortage of oil here in aden can you believe that petrol is not available in the petrol stations it is available in the black market i'm astonished to see trucks carrying petrol for eight an oil refineries but no idea where these trucks go and
11:31 am
where the petrol is profits from yemen's booming coffee industry and farms have plummeted because of high fuel prices yemen depended on its all exports before the war production has almost stopped since the conflict began is under the control of emirati back fighters. but the main problem is this the port and what data to which eighty percent of food aid comes in and that is out of bounds for most. the impact of the war and the crumbling economy has forced within twenty four million yemenis to depend on aid just to survive and humanitarian aid is not enough you need a political solution that is going to allow the economy to revitalize that will allow restrictions on imports to be lifted that will allow sellers to be paid the jobs created markets to be revitalized. such sectors to come back to life again so that people. you know slowly can start to sort of resume

a life that used to exist prior to the construct a hope that perhaps many yemenis still have despite the real threat of hunger and famine priyanka gupta are just seeing. the opening of a critical road link in mozambique is helping aid workers reach victims of cyclonic die with most roads damaged or destroyed people in remote areas have been relying on basic supplies delivered by air tony brooklier reports from let me go. food supplies are getting to be or the problem is getting them to the people who really need them. this is what happens when bread is distributed to the needy. people are desperate for every piece they can grab food is scarce and supermarkets supplies are expensive a delivered by air and water is not enough the end six road is the bane road artery from biro to the remote parts of mozambique it was severed in the psych lone you

can get a real idea of the power and severity of this psycho namie flooding that followed by this area this entire area as far as you can see was covered in water it destroyed everything around here the power here even pushed off this car off the road and miraculously the driver escaped he swam to safety but it destroyed about one hundred meters a road that had been newly built by the chinese the road was cut for a week on sunday it reopened after chinese contractors and local workers worked day and night to build a new stretch and restore a vital lifeline that serves malawi zambia and zimbabwe does the road being damage it. you can see we have a situation like better see it is well for us to get there will go out if help is getting difficult but like a state for was there and there was so awful that the country neighboring countries eroded six really important.
