that israeli officials will it here too if this tentative deal is actually reached folly thank you very much for that mohammed jump june reporting there live from gaza while our leaders say stability in the middle east hinges on the creation of a palestinian state they have been attending the thirtieth arab league summit indonesia's capital tunis the summit is being held against a backdrop of division war and unrest across the region with conflicts in yemen syria and libya also on the agenda tenacious president said c. has called upon arab leaders to send a message on the importance of establishing a palestinian state. we reiterate no attitude that this arab land is occupied land in palestine with the rich ignition of the international community we need to consecrate the policy and we are against the violation of the land therefore we need to do everything we can to put into the occupation and reach peace and stability regional and international levels imran khan is following the

summit for us in tunis joins us now live in iran some strong language from the leaders that we've heard from so far on the palestinian issue. that's right it seems to be palestine palestine palestine not swat the key message is from all of the keynote speakers everybody has mentioned the issue of palestine but it was actually the palestinian president mahmoud abbas who has just been speaking that made a point that will have rolled with some of those arab leaders of been talking about palestine he said the current situation of the palestinians is down to the fact that the u.s. president donald trump has acted out of norm's with everything that's happened in the past by recognizing jerusalem as israeli territory by recognizing the occupied golan heights as israeli territory by cutting funding to the united nations refugee agency that this is the reason that the palestinians in their current predicament
10:02 pm
so whilst everybody else has been saying that it needs to be peace they need to be a palestinian state it was the palestinian president who actually squarely pointed the blame at the u.s. president donald trump singling him out by name so even stronger language coming out from the palestinian president now lots of people have been reacting on social media talking about the fact that the arab league has been talking about the palestinian issue for the last thirty years yet nothing has changed so they feel that nothing will change unless there is a radical shift in the language that the arab league uses will that happen in the communique the final communique is going to be issued in a few hours time will it be strong enough language to satisfy both the palestinians and give them some hope that this arab summit is a turning point or will it just be yet another arab summit communiqué thank you for that imran khan my far as saying tune it says bring in our senior political analyst
10:03 pm
. for more on this story the arab summit iran said there's strong language on the palestinian issue or from arab leaders he seemed to be talking the talk but will they walk the walk. well actually it's worse than that it seems that behind the scenes my understanding is that they don't seem to agree on how to approach or how to accept or not accept the deal of the century the initiative that's coming from from and mistress because of the division some would like to embrace whatever comes out of washington something to take and build on others rejected a totally as unacceptable because it doesn't include the basics of a solution for the palestinian issue and hence they decided instead of addressing the question of the american initiative that's coming up for them to be talking about generalities regarding the policy in issues still talking about the need for a palestinian state east jerusalem as its capital and souls of course now i want
10:04 pm
you to listen to this sound bite from the arab league secretary general marwan. gade who said the region must wear together to solve its problems take a listen. his show you know when yemen or libya our people are suffering in syria in yemen and libya and you know that i'm speaking now of civilizations of importance in the middle east i want to remind you that many of our people are suffering from crisis and civil wars and we know that the political situation is the only thing that can consecrate stability there are no winners in civil wars the winners and losers are both losers are on his calling for unity for countries to work together but unity is far from what we have right now within this league within this club with several camps where do things stand right now as far as we've talked about the palestinian issues but the other main issues that are affecting this region actually the hosting president sips
10:05 pm
a cold or dubbed the summit as the summit of sort of verity and it in my nation. probably the solidarity is more or less symbolic and the determination a theoretical at best there are two issues with this one not only are the arab leaders not working towards unity so that at the and resolving a lot of the issues even in the opening speeches we didn't hear a single arab initiative to actually take on something like libya like yemen etc you know there is all of these issues but they're going to the united nations exactly all saying the united nation let them say that exact right but the more important bits is that they are the ones responsible for a lot of the originals problems. a lot of the enter a regional problems are caused by arab leaders because either they're exporting the instability or because they are projecting instability on their neighbors in order to weaken them and to preserve solidify a power
10:06 pm
a tome this is what i call in international relations buyable maniac firemen they claim they want to put off the fire but they are the ones the triggers are in the finals and let me ask you one last question before we let you go marwan about who is attending this arab league summit we saw king salmon of sound arabia the emir of qatar also the egypt's president abdel fattah last minute yes egypt's president abdel fattah el-sisi but no representation it would seem from the you know what would that indicate i think he is more and more. alienated even from the likes of saudi arabia there's a bit of a difference is not nuances between two members of the same camp if you will i think he would've liked to see syria joining this session of the arab league summit because a if you remember just a few weeks ago there really normalize their relationship with the with the assad regime to that would have liked to see a positive language the words normalizing with israel and embracing the trump
10:07 pm
initiative so i think there are a bunch of questions like that i think it's interesting that some of these leaders came in order to basically state their position on the golan heights and because believe it or not president trump is giving him something to say in public so we're against what the you know the primary can present by the golan heights and jerusalem but in private and that's what so put it up sickle they can't do anything about it you know in one thousand eight hundred in the arab league summit then they said anyone who moves the embassy to jerusalem the arabs would have to serve relations with the anyone several nations know what it is they didn't just quickly on the g.c.c. crisis any progress any movement there is it still the status quo completely sidelined the slow. even mentioned on the question of yemen that's really big there was only talk about the a political solution not going to the the the country responsible for the war in yemen nothing about that saudi arabia and the u.a.e.
10:08 pm
and the gulf coast is was completely sidelined cleese from the official general agenda of the meeting thank you so much marlon always good to get your insight on bashar is our senior political analyst on al-jazeera now one of our gerri is richest men and a close bank of president abdelaziz bouteflika has been arrested at the tunisian border. resigned as head of the algerian business leaders for a month there is they had been awarded large public works contracts by the government and helped fund put if election campaigns algeria is living in france meanwhile a gathering for a seventh week of anti-government protests again here algerian president they're rallying in support of the millions of ontarians who are demanding regime change syria's army chief is pushing for the eighty two year old president abdelaziz bouteflika to be declared unfit for office. plenty more ahead on this. including the housing crisis in the fastest growing economy in east asia we'll look

unknown zelinsky could hardly do worse than the current president petro poroshenko he came to power after russia's annexation of crimea vowing to end the war in the east and sweep away corruption the billionaire confectionery king here immortalized in bullet casings and his own sweet and chocolate wrappers has bowed to pressure from the international monetary fund raising utility prices that hurt the poor and he's in a circle he's implicated in allegedly corrupt weapons purchases. see corruption i think we should talk about this that's why reason all of these. painting this is a conversation with president bush and first of all and if he will be elected for the second time i hope that it will make him to sink a vote what kind of place in the history he wants to to get. also in the running

after two decades in politics and three years in prison is former prime minister yulia timoshenko many of her supporters at the final rally in central kiev were bussed in from the countryside drawn by a pledge to harvard consumer gas prices the focus of this election is the economy few promises being made about the war that's the toxic question for all the candidates no one has also done a lot has. no one wants to take responsibility for five years of war after a people's rebellion against russian influence and corruption and ukraine is a country that seems stuck unsure now which way to turn and joe joins us now live from kiev jonah if the comedians alinsky way what are the prospects for ukraine. frankly very difficult or almost impossible to say he's been very very good about his policies how he plans to bring major change to ukraine he has no political
10:13 pm
background so there's nothing to sort of measure him against as much as anything i think the vote for selenski is a protest vote by his largely young younger voters who form his political base people fed up with the unfulfilled promises of mainstream politicians who they see as often as not enriching themselves at public expense for five years on now from those protests on the my down the square behind me here the country still sees corruption rife the economy is held back by i.m.f. imposed austerity measures this war going on in the east and none of the main politicians have any answers for these issues so the fact that was designed ski offers an alternative way shane is something that many voters find very alluring the fact that he has no detail on how he plans to bring that change about is something that people seem to be at this stage in the first round willing to overlook in favor of a vote that really begins to look like

a sort of wholesale rejection of everything that's gone before and those other mainstream politicians john i thank you jenna hall is live in kiev ukraine man thank you. anti-corruption candidates is on a capital has won some of i guess presidential election making had the country's first female leader of. the liberal noir who has no previous political experience beat the governing party candidate in a second round a vote. is probably euro pentel supporters she saw her victory as a signal for change shall be sworn in in june to the largely ceremonial position. freemantle terrorism of the chin i accept this result with great humbleness and sense of great responsibility i think all of you for being here with me and i promise you that i will be with you let's look for things that connect us let's place to work for a better slovakia's above all the fights fought for personal gains let's invite other people in pursuit of ideas and values that connected us through the election
10:15 pm
it's time now for a check of the world weather has kevin that's right and i'm going to picture what is happening with the flooding situation across the states water is beginning to recede where we had seen some historic flooding across the northern plains want to show you the video of what is now looking like now that the water is going down it's actually devastated farmland we're talking about over four hundred thousand hectares of farmland estimated to be just destroyed for this season alone and they still have to do test to see why how this will play out in the next couple of seasons but it is going to be a big problem and we're still dealing with the flooding as that water continues to slowly make its way down the mississippi and then down to the cell the other big story we're talking about here is the temperatures and it doesn't feel like spring right now it feels more like winter the reason being is we have this front has pushed through not too bad on the south side of that front but on the backside of this front we're only getting into the low single digits today where chicago at four up here towards minneapolis at five the reason being is the jet stream is
10:16 pm
really diving down right now giving us those wintertime feel of temperatures in the morning it is going to be really really cold particular when you see the windchill minus for chicago minus five in minneapolis minus seven in parts of winnipeg tamara's not much better we're going to be seeing those terms of still in the single digits all the way out here towards the east and then again a nother very very cold night where we are going to be seeing freeze warnings in effect for many parts of the south. kevin thank you very much for that plenty more ahead on this al-jazeera news hour including a backlash in brazil dating back fifty five years how the president's crimes are having the opposite effect to what he intends us oh it's how social media is creating a revival in all sorts of various areas in london and one of the most famous coaches in football fields speculation over a big name signing to his club that's coming up in sports with the.

palestinians were killed. and the three frontrunners have cast their vote in ukraine's presidential election president petro poroshenko is up against former prime minister yulia timoshenko and comedienne village near zelinsky. saudi arabia has been accused of hacking the phone of jeff bezos the owner of the shopping website on his own and the washington post hired private investigators after his phone messages were leaked to the national enquirer newspaper is detectives said he was targeted by the saudis as they prodded the killing of washington post writer jamal saudi ministers have previously denied any link to the national enquirer is reporting all this isn't the first time saudi arabia has been accused of hacking a social media producer is here to tell us more so thanks for the well side seams have adopted a cyber campaign to silence those who disagree with the kingdom both at home and abroad i want abdulaziz is one of them he's an exile in canada and was

a friend of murdered journalist and. last june he received a suspicious text message with a link to chop a possible delivery and i can a did research group citizen lobby is confident almost mobile phone was targeted by saudi arabia and infected with spyware. now the surveillance tool is known as pegasus and it's by an israeli company called the n.s.a. group and i have been multiple reports on how pegasus has been used in a number of countries to target civil society in august amnesty international reported that sounded dissident cd and one of its software a search over attacks with pegasus both received messages with malicious links from the same domain that links back to and at the time the company responded to amnesties findings and puts out a statement they said that and i saw a group develop cyber technology to allow government agencies to identify and disrupt terrorists and criminal products they said is intended to be used
10:21 pm
exclusively for the investigation and prevention of crime and terrorism if and then a geisha arises concerning a violation we investigate the issue and take appropriate action based on those findings furthermore the n.s.o. group has been accused of being an accessory to the murder of jamal she has denied of course any involvement but israeli media reports of that sounds already paid fifty five million dollars for the baker's a surveillance tool a system so advanced is classified as a weapon and requires government approval to sell it the group has already been sued. and misty has actually requested israel revoke its export license and their science in human rights violations and that's not all because sound eurabia has also been using twitter bots a software that interacts with other twitter accounts and can spread whatever message you want to see hundreds or thousands of them flood twitter to boost a conversational hash tag until it takes off on its own in this way you can create a fake trend saudi has used this tool against its neighbor cottage creating fake
10:22 pm
news and propagating it and when she was murdered sad people on these got to work too and then last month at least four verified twitter accounts including one belonging to a us mint geologist acts and used to spread pro saudi messages assad continues to run troll farms in its capital riyadh and its critics say they're being targeted on various social media platforms. sara thank you very much for that joining us now for more on this is mark owen jones was an assistant professor of middle east studies at howard been highly for a university here in qatar his research specializes in surveillance and technology as a tool for pression good to have you with us here on news hour as we've heard say that it's not the first sign that the saudis are accused of using such tactics and in fact since the matter of jamal khashoggi there's been a lot of conversation about this first of all what would the saudis gain from hacking jeff bezos the saudis in theory would gain leverage if they had jeff bezos
10:23 pm
is for jeff bezos is the owner of washington post and as such the washington post were responsible in exactly pursuing justice with regards to the murder of jamal khashoggi so i think if you are saudi and you felt that you had some leverage or some ability to blackmail jeff bezos you could potentially influence washington post coverage of the whole affair and take some of the heat away from saudi arabia at the time in theory how easy or difficult is it for a country like saudi arabia or any other to hack an individual's phone i think if you have the expertise actually it's probably not that difficult there are number of ways to hack phones and these constantly change so there's a whole market for exploits of phone technology every time apple or samsung or anyone release a new phone there will be people pursuing an investigating ways of. exploiting that phone and by exploiting i mean ways of inserting spy once that phone they then sell these exploits to companies that buy them for up to
10:24 pm
a million dollars and then these companies can then create a piece of software that once installed that phone which can be quite easy to do will then give whoever is using the software access to the person's private photos emails videos essentially anything on that and if they're doing this to jeff bezos and i emphasize on if because the saudis of course have denied being involved in any of this or if they're doing it to. basis are they doing it to other people to other countries how widespread a tactic is this among countries this tactic is become the norm so we have saudi doing a lot but we know for example that the united arab emirates of use this time similar technologies against human rights activists like up in months or you know the bahamian government back in two thousand and twelve were using european spy ware in fish it's hoggett activists not just living in behind but living in the u.k. so we know that even smaller countries countries that do not have as much power or clout to saudi arabia have been using these types of technologies to target
10:25 pm
activists living abroad and this to me is really crucial because what we're seeing now is not necessary just state centric efforts to control dissent we're seeing these kind of assemblages of authority in structures often western companies or third certain governments coming together to target people who might be living in canada or the u.k. so we're seeing this globalization of surveillance and repression and i know your research focuses on autocratic states in particular but are they the only ones doing this is this also happening no this is why the government said well this is why i use the term assemblage because actually much of the expertise that is then sold to or thirteen governments comes from countries like america u.k. it's no different from the ons trade if you look at most countries in the gulf where they buy the weapons from it's usually the u.s. or the u.k. so it's these people who have the expertise were selling it to these countries so they can wash their hands of this when the it was mentioned in the clip the pegasus was considered a weapon actually all of this technology should be considered a weapon it just depends how it's being used very interesting to talk to you about the sink you so much on audio and jones are coming into syria for your insight now
