2:01 am
and more anti-government protests to new capital as western governments call for a credible transition plan. so exit polls in israel show no clear winner and an election that's seen as a referendum on the four time prime minister benjamin netanyahu. the former military chief benny gantz from the centrist blue and white alliance was projected to win thirty seven seats while official results may not come until next week gans has claimed victory calling it an historic vote. sure enough the fuel edition of c. being the fuel of this thing that's the federal win isn't lose in elections but we are the winner as we might be new but we're not naive we understand that we've got
2:02 am
to wait for the true results but within a few days will work to calm a government as big as possible. meanwhile incumbent prime minister benjamin netanyahu of the likud party has also claimed victory these are live pictures from the headquarters and salivated that were celebrations at the party headquarters let's go to straight to harry fawcett who is now live for us right there harry i understand new exit poll numbers have come out benjamin netanyahu is due to speak set the scene there. that's right i mean we've been waiting for better or not you know to come here and speak for some time now his arrival appeared to be delayed perhaps for this with very reason because just before you came into the role here you only numbers came out from the two main t.v. channels suggesting that rather than trying best oh perhaps even falling behind the blue and white party it was in front is look at in front that the five to thirty

2:16 am
speaking at the likud party headquarters in tel aviv that's also where our correspondent gary fossett as ads listening in so far that essentially was sell the numbers the final count as an hour that essentially was a victory speech. yes the second victory speech that we've heard so far this evening the first coming from many guns his main challenger and now this one some hours later coming from the leader of the likud party. and so now the prime minister of israel benjamin netanyahu he was very clear in that speech that he had one that is looking. benny gantz and more importantly in terms of the pragmatic next steps that the israeli right and what he said the right along with the leadership of likud will lead israel for the next four years he called this an unannounced to move victory given the circumstances he pointed back here to with us
2:17 am
in the media ranks. in even seeing a chorus of boos from the crowd below so he's saying that despite what happened earlier straightaway after the polls closed at ten pm local time some four hours ago. giving either. dead heat or a victory of some few seats to the rival blue and white party now shortly after that is being recalibrated by the two main news channels to give him a one seat advantage thirty five seats to thirty four to his likud is now saying that this is a victory that he has. to go to the president. a new coalition government and really for another four years very of course be checking in with you throughout in the following hours but we'll leave you to continue monitoring what's happening there at the likud party headquarters so let's take a look at what happens next there are one hundred twenty seats in the israeli
2:18 am
parliament are the knesset and to make it in a party needs to win at least three point two five percent of the told votes that's about four seats no party has ever achieved an outright majority and sixty one seats are needed to form a government the president will choose the candidate he things has the best chance of forming a coalition this person then has forty two days to form a government and if they can't the leader with the second best chance gets twenty days to try and failing that it can even go to a third candidate let's get more and alice's now and speak to our political senior analyst. joining me live on set marwan thank you very much great to have you on set with me. netanyahu in his speech made a point of saying that the first time he was there. as a leader of the country was twenty three years ago what does it say to that he's prevailed until now well first of all that he was a very seasoned politician that he succeeded against all odds after his first
2:19 am
defeat in one nine hundred ninety nine and was able for the last ten years to pull three other victories. i think what is on the other hand a bit more controversial is that you have here a leader who is for a long time now accused of racism corruption. of being a crook potentially indicted on three corruption charges not one not two. basically failed throughout the four terms he served in attaining peace or security for him or for the people on that occupation so really all in all he succeeded in certain parts in terms of israel as it cannot make record israel's certain achievements in high take and so on so forth but on the overall questions of peace and security heathfield miserably and as as i said on top of it all and
2:20 am
that's very important that israel is once again electing basically a next prime minister of a man who is going to be indicted on three corruption charges and who is accused widely of being a racist leader yeah i want to talk more about that before before i go to that let's talk about benny gantz and now this election has been you know described as being moving to the right or even more to the right is that how you would how do you see it well i mean if you look at the programs of each and every party that is presented and that's winning you know a dozen party or so that have won today the elections. two of them are radical religious right the parties one is a skin a-z. one is for a party meaning one is oriental one is western religious jewish nationalist parties and they probably would have fifty seats between them and then we have a very extreme nationalist religious unionist party that also probably
2:21 am
won four or five seat we have a radical right wing russian based party led by a big deal lieberman that's probably going to win four or five seats we have a part to know which is a basically split from likud meaning from the right another five votes or so and we have a number of parties will you know more or less we're going to make it like the new right party like. identity parties who party and so on so forth are even more extreme to the right so basically most of the seats in parliament today between blue white political alliance the likud party as well as all these smaller parties make up three quarters four fifths of the israeli knesset of they are miserably extremist right wing parties and all of them support a part paid meaning separate but not equal rule over palestine and that seems to be
2:22 am
the elephant in the room or one of israel's are the biggest issues in the region and neither party is addressing how they're going to resolve that. either one of them any better for the palestinians well certainly the policies were hoping that the person leaders were hoping for more guns than that then you know because guns is the more ready to engage them. engage them doesn't mean reaching the solution because they've been engaged for over twenty five years and there has been no solution in fact situation has deteriorated jerusalem now is because guys where america is kept out of israel settlements have tripled through boulder and so on and so forth now to be to be quite honest about this what netanyahu just said is not incorrect he did get more votes than ever before than two thousand and fifteen two thousand and nine one thousand nine hundred sixty get he got more seats he did maybe get less maybe as much as guns but
2:23 am
he will form the next government it seems from the bits of pieces that we have thus far from the exit polls that between the two extreme religious nationalist parties and the three other smaller righteous parties he will be the one able to form a government of maybe sixty two to sixty five members are of one hundred twenty mile and bashar a senior political analyst as always great to get your insight and thank you for staying up so they took us and being on set. right these are live pictures from the likud party headquarters in vivo that benjamin netanyahu has just finished giving what essentially wasn't a victory speech but the votes are still being counted and the official tally yet to be announced we will of course be bringing you all the latest numbers and all
