this statement today have made their position clear that they want to be bigger and security and stability and the way to do that i think is to to usher in a new dispensation in the country one which provides for legitimate civilian administration and have to be efforts that move towards that process the army said they're not there to provide ideology and they're not there to provide the options for governance in the country moving forward you know they did they set a two year transition but they get set a timeline for movement towards that civilian administration so perhaps in the coming days will see a softening of their position maybe a movement towards the middle ground which does need to be met some stage by this incident in order to move the country forward within a transitional period or thank you so much for your thoughts on that. protesters
8:01 pm
are back on the streets in algeria to the eighth consecutive friday of demonstrations against the country's leadership they say they are not satisfied with the departure of president abdelaziz bouteflika this month and wants an overhaul of the supercool establishment and the heart of an interim president this week announced new elections for july the fourth and dahlia violin is a resident scholar at the carnegie middle east center in beirut she joins us live from there clearly the demonstrators not happy with the concessions that the authorities have made thus far do you think the protesters have now got momentum and history with them on their side. yes indeed i think they created the momentum the minute that they took up to the street on february twenty second because they took of the region of guard and back then
8:02 pm
you know the region and there is to mate the ability of algerians to organize to took to take up to the streets and to do it in a very peaceful and civilized way so i think the momentum has a read the you know the regime of guard and it is impossible for the region to stop it now you know the victory also that algerian witnessed with the departure of president putin. is is important so they know now what they can achieve with their protest every friday but also with the daily protests you know shouldn't have been organizing the daily protest the union people roy years judges and so on so forth so i think the momentum is here and the start to call is a really winding up if i may say and i do believe that because i've lived with them
8:03 pm
on several march that the algerians are not going to go back home before their demands are met and today their demands are very clear why at the beginning they were asking for president to leave today they are asking for the three b.'s to us communing buried a bit do we and. to leave and they are not happy with the president of transition being a been silent because he is one of the signs of the former regime and they want all of them to be to get out as they repeatedly said it began. there are some reports that there was some kinds of restrictions on protesters coming in can you clarify from your understanding is this an overall trend that the army or the authorities are trying to now. prevent protests quotes from swelling.
8:04 pm
yes indeed you know as a matter of fact for the twenty ninth protest i was in algiers and on the twenty eighth that's a really the just the that movie was trying to block roads from the area which is approximately fifty miles southeast of algiers so these are if i may say the first signs of of. you know strategies off repression there was a road block king's there was the gendarme that impeded people from joining the capitol. years and there was also the use of what canon against a student a few days ago there was also the use of sound cannon so i think this is also the military sending signals that the message is we heard you indeed we
8:05 pm
gave you a few concessions but do not ask for too much. jury move triggered a coup in ninety two it was widely perceived at least that they had support from some western capitals what do you make of the the international and regional reaction to what's going on this time round. while this time we are no longer in one thousand mind and the prove is that the military intervene do differently some analysts called it big. they said that it was in eleven am which means a soft coup so the military i think they are very aware of what they can and what they cannot do we are living in a different time they learned also from their mistakes and they don't want to read it if i may say the scenario of nineteen and ninety two but they also know that
8:06 pm
today you know to live what i do yet lived in the ninety's meaning a conflict with close meaning conflict only with algerian people is no longer possible today you know we are in the two point zero or. revolution if i may say. and there stood the use of social media and they are using social media especially facebook they understood that they can organize themselves they can structure their movement through social movement facebook but they can also be heard and their voice can be heard through social media they use that also you know to video tape and to live stream in case of any repression. used by the region so any kind of bad move if i may say any kind of repression will expose the brutality of the region and the military and this will endure mine the military
8:07 pm
when it comes to the direct neighbors i would say they are and to nisha and of course there is you know. they are worried about the situation in algeria but we cannot also not talk about friends. friends is a big investor in algeria it has economic interests but also. cultural ones that there are millions of algerians living in france as well so for the moment i think the french president emmanuelle learn from his mistake and he hasn't been declared anything so far and i think this is the best thing to do it because i'll julian's you know showed their refusal for any foreign hand and the signs were very clear when i marched with them they were saying. to our duties which means my

car get busy with your vest so anything could be interpreted as a sign of. julian's do not want to do that today revolution is algerian and they wanted to remain and to be solved within. and this is why they are refusing any kind any type of. foreign intervention. to get your thoughts. at least twenty people have been killed in a bomb attack in the pakistani province of blotches than they say it happened in a fruit market in the southwestern city of quester the market is own and run by members of the house are a share minority they've been targeted by sunni groups in the past reports. a powerful bomb a soft target the explosive device is believed to have been hidden among bags of potatoes those shopping in the open air fruit and vegetable market took the full

hello and welcome to the program i'm how he had seen in sudan protesters have been calling for a complete change of the political system what they've got is an end to the thirty year rule of omar al bashir through a military coup but the alternative is unlikely to satisfy many the defense minister says omar bashir was removed and arrested and the army will not be in charge for the next two years the constitution has been suspended parliament's the central governments and regional governments have all been dissolved and a state of emergency has been declared this is what the defense minister had to say . the supreme committee decided to employ a man and what was not in the mind of other people and acts as ishmael period of two years the forces

8:27 pm
us if i could start with you. your protest group was among those calling for bashir to go he has now gone are you satisfied now in our we were calling for the best just for and we're talking about the whole we're talking about the whole system and his vice president of who came out and right now and he's new leader and stated in two years a transitional government and three months curfew is one of the people who is calling to kill the broadcasters so we're not satisfied at all the struggle continues and nothing changed and we think we have the momentum we're very strong. people are out in numbers there's millions out in the street every event is with us even people in the army mid-level and our younger folks are with us so we think we can do it and we're going to continue ok let me turn to you have his mahomet's.
8:28 pm
bashir has now gone but what we have night it's not satisfying the protesters what do you think will happen next i think people are going to continue to protest because this is just like a palace coup is nothing happening they should is not only receive is a hold of him and now is clear on my way to use to do i possible many for a fist as in the center of khartoum they start shouting slogans be fusing the holy statement and this is that meant totally is not satisfactory to them and i think what they are going to do is to continue protesting until a real change happens. they don't actually accept this because it's clear is not addressing the main issue you didn't put in the the country in the power of. in democracy or accountability that is what is missing the statement is victory in
8:29 pm
north korea and clear is just seen to them like a policy i don't think that is going to be satisfactory to them have all these young men and women protesting for. sorry to cut you off if i were to play devil's advocate they will have his mohammed i would say that the army have said they are willing to transition to a democracy and this will take two years that's the time period they have given presumably so that the country can get ready for a transition to a new elections realistically what they are what the protesters are calling for this simply can't happen over night. yeah but but the problem is if you want to really start a transition after you have to do it correctly and you have to start initiate a correct roth for the transition but if the status quo is still activities and all these people who are now in the supreme council of the change are the same people
8:30 pm
the same mentality no change i don't think that is going to take us and the other seems to be astonishing is not and also too many problems years of of the n.c.p. have created over me when. i look at it to be done to actually put the country in the right the of for democracy and look at the transition and i think that has to stop from the thirty's day but i see just this is stephan and i both satisfactory and i do think the mentality of these people who actually taking the lead is that it's a same mentality and i do think they're going to bring the change which is needed which put the country on the pier for doing transition to democracy i think this is for people is just west of time and is just repeating getting what's going on for set yes and i don't think that is going to be accepted and i do think that is going to satisfy the protesters and i'm sure they going to continue protesting until their view of change happens ok let's bring in the whites if you then david shinn
8:31 pm
you're in washington d.c. what do you make of the developments this thursday. clearly if the overwhelming majority of the protesters are dissatisfied with the current plan laid out by the military there's going to be continuing difficulties in the country and something better will have to develop over time i can't obviously speak for individual countries around the world but i suspect there's a lot of skepticism over a plan that it goes out at least two years before the authority of government is turned over to civilians i don't understand why it would take that long i think there has to be a short period where you maintain stability in the country and probably only the military can do that but that can be negotiated with the protesters and it certainly can be a much reduced period of time with some important changes in leadership also what
8:32 pm
changes in leadership david shinn do you think should be brought in that i think the military probably has to identify some of the key civilian leaders that have been involved in the protest movement or perhaps technocrats who are not necessarily part of the protest movement and make them part of the current government in effect bring them into positions where their views are taken into account now not two years from now ok. who would you like to see brought in instead of. the prime that's been lying by the military. ok so let's listen let's make this clear we've been fighting these partisan being on our on from mitt december from then. protestors have come together united have a very clear vision for the transitional into democracy so we have we all are under the freedom and changed to clear ration and within that we have very clear way how
8:33 pm
we want the country to be able to vote and transitional period that will fix the country and get us ready for democracy and this period we had already set for four years we had already set in the technocratic government and we had already decided this will be a civilian government not. a military government so we are very united and we know exactly what we want and that's why we know how to we know that we want to that's why we know that what this government is not so it's not a period where we just want the government to come in we want to figure it out this is not where we at now given if the news of the trouble against this government has been going on for thirty years as a movement against this government we're very well established with very well connected we are very well working together if you let me pursue this point in the cartoon with the fees mohammad's we heard from kooker there that the open.
