phase that will be leaving sudan and we go and we're going to have to wait until tomorrow morning to see how people are taking this reaction this announcement currently they seem to be very happy rejoicing in the fact that they have the power and there they have the voice to remove anybody who they do not want to leading them so we're going to have to wait until tomorrow and see if they are happy with general abdul fatah or if they feel like he too has a tainted past that is not very well known and they will try to also remove him from power as you say it's very important to see now how the protesters digest this news that we've had tonight thank you very much really appreciate it morgan there for us and hard to there is obviously a great deal going on but we'll have kristen salumi she joins us live now from the united nations in new york and of course we have heard parts of the international community calling for the civilians to be involved they want civilians involved in this transitional process they also call for violence to be avoided at all costs
5:01 am
tell us about what happened at the u.n. today. well the united nations and the international community has been watching the situation in sudan very carefully almost as soon as word got out that omar al bashir had been deposed the united kingdom and europeans on the council were calling for a security council meeting to review the situation they haven't taken any specific action yet but certain members of the council have been very outspoken including the united kingdom who said that the call for a two year transition to a civilian government just wasn't good enough they were worried that wasn't fast enough. but they were also concerned about the situation of protesters their rights being protected the high commissioner for human rights has spoken out about that the secretary general has expressed concern so well no official action from the security council yet fair to say a high level of concern and as the president of the security council put it the
5:02 am
fact that they even met on this issue so quickly should send that signal and it seems that there is some response taking place in sudan to these concerns by way of background i should point out that the united nations has been very involved in the situation in darfur in the security council in particular this is a body that we know for being divided in many of the world's conflicts incapable of coming to a consensus and being able to act because of divisions in the council but some fifteen years ago the security council came together over the situation in darfur and actually referred the president omar al bashir to the international criminal court it was the first time ever that the security council ever referred a head of state an acting sitting head of state to the international criminal court for prosecution on work crimes and specifically genocide for the situation in darfur and it's interesting to note that it is the general who just stepped aside
5:03 am
that was in charge of military intel. mogens at the time of this campaign he has been sanctioned by the united states for his alleged role in these atrocities that took place in the darfur region so perhaps not surprising that he would be stepping aside to avoid controversy we heard from sudan's shahrzad affairs here at the united nations seeking to calm international concerns saying that the transition would happen and it could happen more quickly in fact if the situation on the ground warranted it that the military was committed to civilian rule and so on but he stressed that it was a domestic concern clearly not wanting the international community to get involved the government the military government has said that. bashar will be. face justice in his home country not be sent to the i.c.c.
5:04 am
sudan does not recognize the international criminal court so just by way of background there is a lot of concern from the united nations from the international community no official action by the security council here yet but a promise to stay engaged and keep focused on the situation and meet as soon as next week if necessary if the situation goes in a direction that they're not happy with over the weekend and we will have to see what the reaction is and right now we have some live pictures coming to us and they are coming to us from sudan where you can see a sense of jubilation a celebratory atmosphere at this the initial reaction the immediate reaction to the announcement from the military council that the chief was stepping down so the defense minister had been said that he is going to be stepping down as head of that council and that replacing him will be left in
5:05 am
a general abdul fatah. he will be the new he will be the new leader of the transitional council and certainly the reaction that we're seeing on the streets to suggest that the protesters are pleased with this news being to a correspondent and the the perception of but hahn is that he is not someone that has been tainted by the behavior on the crimes in the actions of the regime he is perhaps someone that people will be eager to watch very closely to see what he does next but of course the question is whether he whether he makes swift moves to involve civilians in the process because this is absolutely key for the people you see here on the streets and they have been out there on the streets for several nights now at the military headquarters and hard to and it was hugely significant that some days. they were allowed to approach the building itself but then
5:06 am
continued to continue to spend the night there for several nights now and this in the face of a state of emergency and a curfew but the military have essentially left the people alone they have been allowed to continue with that protest many thousands of people gathering there and the initial reaction is one of celebration and perhaps relief at the transitional council appears to be listening to that demands listening to their concerns by replacing the head of this transitional council with a new figure and now we must make wait to see what he will do next but of course these protests come after many months people initially taking to the streets because of the dire economic situation in the country inflation was a problem unemployment rising prices. really struggling to survive
5:07 am
a spiraled and morphed if you like into something great some very ambitious political demands that the regime must be the president tomorrow bashir must go and not only have they managed to achieve that after some three decades of off to some three decades of a model bashir after some three decades of a model bashir managing to hold on to power and that had been protests in the past but never have we seen such a strong and sustained movement and this is real staying power they have stayed on the streets in defiance of the authorities and in defiance of the regime and look at what they've managed to achieve what morgan is watching all of this from hard to and we are seeing pictures here of people celebrating.
5:08 am
yes as i said marianne people are extremely happy by the fact that they are finally able to experience their power they're saying that they were not happy with the fact that general. was a member of bashir is reaching there saying that he was very much part and parcel of the old regime that they were calling for the remove for their movie so they were saying that they were not on the side of the protests for months where they were not just demanding that president obama and bashir leave they wanted the whole regime the whole system his whole government gone and. was not fulfilling that wish when he took over command of the military council and saxe president i want bashir now they're celebrating the fact that they had the power to make general of the defense minister and the president former president bashir is government and a vice president as well they're celebrating the fact that they had the power to make him step down and appoint someone else whether this person will fulfill the
5:09 am
common the conditions that they want to see in a person leading the transitional government that we have yet to see we're going to have to wait to see the response of the political parties early at the moment the military council said that it's open for dialogue that everybody will be included all political parties will have a participation in the transitional government and that it doesn't have to be two years and the constitution doesn't have to be suspended it's could be brought back if political parties are able to sit down and that the military councils duty is just to make sure that everything is in order and that the country is kept safe and secure whether this new general dunford will have the same conciliate conciliatory tone whether he will fulfill reprise and or fulfill or provide to the people who have been in the streets thousands of people not just here in clinton but iran the states if they feel like he fulfills what they want and then we might see and to the process but then we're going to have to wait as i said for the. reactions from
5:10 am
the political parties and from the sudanese professional association which has been spearheading the call for the protests over the past four months. yes that's right and of course we continue to see these pictures of people out on the streets in the initial reaction is is certainly one of of celebration and elation the interesting thing here is that the military council had previously said that they were willing to talk to to everyone so they want to speak to the people out on the streets they want to speak to political leaders as well and i was just looking that around the time we were getting this big announcement you know there were also reports that a meeting between the armed forces and political parties had been moved so that delayed perspire own but they don't say it was to an unspecified date is that something that might concern people.
5:11 am
well yes that was something of concern the political parties as i said do hold certain wades. into these communities and what's happened. and what's happened of course with the lead the country is going to take obviously as you said the military council earlier said that they do want to open dialogue with all political parties and make sure that all societies and layers of sudan is represented or rather are represented in the transitional government the fact that that meeting did not happen did raise a few eyebrows and people were wondering if this military council will be able to fulfill and represent what the people on the streets wanted but the people on the streets had already answered that question maryam when the appointment was made when the announcement was made yesterday they made it very clear that they were not going to accept the military council they were going to accept a transitional council they would accept a temporary government
5:12 am
a transitional government but they're not going to accept one that is going to be led by the military and this is something interesting because the current person who general hours of had handed power has had has handed power to is a military personnel he's a general and the inspector general of the military so it's people are celebrating right now but we're going to have to wait and see how political parties are taking is how the how they will wake up tomorrow and feel about this one thing that sets apart the new commander right now to continue needer is that he doesn't have the same tainted history that president bashir had he doesn't have the same tainted history that the military council the former military council chairman of new office had. was the military intelligence chief under stari and there bashir is government he was sanctioned by the united states in two thousand and seven for alleged crimes in the western region of dar for president bashir himself is wanted for work crimes crimes against humanity and genocide. making him he was the only
5:13 am
sitting president to be indicted for these crimes by the international criminal court so people are saying that whoever does need the transitional period or is represented in the transitional period they didn't want the person to have the same tainted history and the same kind of closeness to the regime and generally the for the one at the moment looks like the kind of person. all right thank you very much for now have been morgan and how two men actually we can now also speech your honeyed el duque i spoke to him earlier he is he has been participating in these protests he's a university professor i know he's also been arrested on a number of occasions joins us on the phone from hard to and so here we have another remarkable development in the country people were happy about the military's initial steps until it emerged the defense minister was the one that was taking over now he is stepping down tell us about the protest as
5:14 am
a response to this. while in the name of students professors association i would like to congratulate this is nice people for their endure and some for the victory. today we are witnessing an historic. moment in the history of sudan the his the people of sudan the have world tediously to abreu to the past regime the sudanese people or let's say the demonstrators in the streets now are celebrating this moment and everybody is happy with these new developments and. hiring is one one of one of the militant talents who is acceptable to some symbiosis in its people and i think it's a very good move by a very good move and we are going to go to the world together until we're finished with the hot stuff what the people want to see from general abdel fattah han
5:15 am
while the only thing that they want to see. you know they have they have so many demands and so the waiting for the months. to be met if they realize if we realize our demands and i think things will go on the right track if they can to try to to to meet our demands and i think we'll go on the street again so we'll keep watching the government keep watching the work until the so that go back to the right crags that accustomed to that can you never be before they give me can you be most specific in terms of what you want to see but hansei one of the steps that he needs to take now what the protesters want to see from him in the immediate aftermath of this innit. what. was that special from behind. face to start working and forming
5:16 am
a civilian government. the preserve the civilian government shouldn't exceed more the four up to six months and the other thing is that the issue of security and our relations with the international community which has been distorted by the past. moreover i say it all everybody who army in the past three games should be should should should face. trial they have they have to stand before the polls. anything that been stolen from sudan should be retrieved but because we lost a lot so that incident like as we've seen in sudan has been one of the greatest country one be but this riddim destroyed everything so we want to do to restore our past image and want to restore our cause glory would keep working on that is what we are expecting from from. behind there are many other things that would be on the
5:17 am
way you know you do you know of course you know a model bashir took power in one thousand nine hundred ninety is one of the longest serving leaders in the region it's enormously significant that he's no longer that this process now on of rebuilding the country and retaining what was lost that's presumably going to take some time in definitely to fact check at caltech time because imagine you know the country has been destroyed or this destruction has been going on. the city is so it needs time to get things back into shape but we're really really really really really exercise and patience until things get back to to that we want you are fully aware of the fact that things will take time. it's going to take time and how quickly do you expect to see elections because we have seen this incredible these are the most sustained protests the country has
5:18 am
seen it is a remarkable movement but if there are eventually going to be elections and some sort of process the opposition will i suppose need time to to organize itself. well as for the opposition i thing they have already organized themselves and they are lissie they have been organizing themselves since. the beginning of the beginning of all of this demonstrations and. before that you know they have been grabbing themselves and others like the four kings who tricked arm and we need we need to be a need to exercise patience. once again let me repeat the same time that we work together to sing to get back to the right track and. remarkable movements and this remarkable movement will keep on going on this remark
5:19 am
a movement this american woman is a reflection of. it has affected the togetherness and the unity and the solidarity of this and its people and not only that even if you look at the demonstrators and how they work together you can go past the old to the un you know the same the same met the same habits that's the nice people used to do like. sharing things together checking food from one house to another sitting together the same things you know we have we have loved these things long time but now we have seen it finished in the demonstration field. and it is it is good you know it's good to see the type of things. before us and this is i think is good is the book all men for the future of the coming future of the new very briefly
5:20 am
this has come at a price hasn't it because people have been imprisoned people have been show tortured and people have been killed taking part in these protests. yeah. yeah well and about who participate in it and people should appear before the court and any public who are stolen the money of the countries are to. be up here or has to be taken to the court and they will be seen if you know dusty's defense might be proud to say but the thing that's you know would. be just these must be dealt as you say. justice and accountability is going to be crucial if there is to be a rebuilding and reconciliation process in the country i hope to speak to you a little bit later apologies for interrupting but thank you very much for taking the time to speak to us on this evening where we have seen another major development in sudan the defense minister announcing that he is stepping down as

they also want the avoidance of bloodshed and violence but we haven't seen that happen tonight have we because the man who is to replace the defense minister is also part of the military. absolutely and the international community is watching very carefully because of sudan's history the takeover that's happening there and almost as soon as word got out that omar al bashir had been deposed the security council called for a briefing they held that briefing today behind closed doors to get the latest on the situation on the ground but no action from the security council just yet no statement on behalf of the council we're told by one security council diplomat on background that some african members of the security council were wanting to wait to let the african union weigh in over the weekend before the security council took official action but speaking after the meeting the president of the council german

ambassador christophe hoist skin said that the fact that the council met at all and so quickly should signal that the international community is watching and concerned he said that they would meet again as soon as monday if things did not go well over the weekend and also you know the united kingdom has also been speaking out on the situation from their stand vantage point here at the united nations saying things like that they're concerned about the rights of the protesters that there not be more bloodshed and also about the timetable for that transition to civilian government so all of that percolating here at the united nations earlier in the day the sudanese shahrzad affair took advantage of a previously scheduled meeting to speak to the council and attempt to reassure them that the military government in power now was in fact committed to a peaceful handover to a civilian government have
