and i think we've seen this manifest in various ways you know in the last couple of years we had a massive episode of. muslim violence last year we've seen barely any kind of you know accountability or you know anyone being held to account and there's a huge amount of impunity speaking about the government a warning was issued by police i think on april eleventh about the possibility of suicide attacks on churches how how is that dealt with i mean this is a really good question because this kind of came up today after with the government government's kind of press conference to the public that said oh the you know we were aware of this you know when we've seen this kind of in action time and again we saw it last year we keep seeing it in various kind of political context and in terms of violence as well and i think these are what the government need to be held to task on and we're seeing very little pressure being put on the government to actually provide answers where they should be providing answers it's an extraordinary lack of accountability and it's infuriating if this lack of
6:01 am
accountability continues could. could this feel another cycle of violence we've been hearing that there are fears of retaliatory attacks taking place well i mean this is a reality that we kind of have to prepare for and i hope the government is giving serious thought to we had what was dubbed a coup steer and you know this created a lot of political instability but you know again the aftermath of it in terms of you know. trying to kind of understand what happened and trying to kind of resolve a lot of the issues that came out of the coup have been incredibly slow and it's the same thing in terms of violence like this where we need to worry about you know how things could potentially escalate course it's a terrible you know. thing to kind of speculate based on lack of information which is why there also needs to be transparency in terms of you know the government communicating to citizens and a lot of the information that we've seen come through has been through politicians

from london there is more still ahead protesters in the bangladeshi capital demand justice for a young woman who was burnt to death after reporting sexual abuse. censorship and scandals how bad fits to showcase the world's fastest growing film market at the beijing film festival and then later in sports a crucial win for liverpool in the english premier league as a regain control of the title race. comedian is set to be ukraine's next president rodham is lenski was the wild card in the election with no political experience other than playing the president on television but he has now secured a resoundingly victory in their all votes exit polls give him seventy three percent of the vote while the incumbent petro poroshenko got twenty five percent. you know . i will never let you down i may not formally be president yet but as
6:04 am
a citizen of ukraine i can tell all cost soviet countries look at us everything is possible. our shango has already conceded defeat but has also said he has no plans to quit politics altogether. do you. agree. do you crane's this month i will leave the post of the head of state this is what most of you have decided and i accept this decision i will leave office but i want to announce firmly i would not leave politics. alive now to robin far stable pay any crane in capital kiev and rob it has been a remarkable rise to prominence for not to me as a lansky but has it been fueled by his popularity or frustration with the ruling elite. ever since he announced that he was going to run that was on the thirty first of december twenty eighth new year's eve he has been leading in those polls so immediately.
6:05 am
his campaign team were able to get him recognized by the ukrainian ukrainian sorry public as someone that could lead the country whether or not they believed it was because he could somehow turn into reality his fictional t.v. persona or whether it was a protest vote still kind of remains to be seen that was certainly a lot of frustration with petro with petro poroshenko he claimed that he had done a lot for ukraine and that he had kept it on its european path that he had managed to get western support with ukraine's war against russia in terms of sanctions against russia done things like it visa free access for ukrainians to europe. but ukrainians just didn't get this message or didn't really see the real changes that they wanted changes in terms of the tackling of this sort of systemic
6:06 am
corruption where you have this oligarchy can lead to controlling things now many ukrainians see it was part of that problem being a wealthy businessman himself and there was scandal still surrounding him. and his political elite so yes i think it's about the ukrainians deciding that they had had enough of that this was a protest vote and this idea that it couldn't get any worse that they had nothing to lose and i think this hope that somehow volodymyr zelinsky can turn fiction into reality in terms of that honest character that he plays on television a man from humble beginnings who is going to somehow play things differently in this country and take on that corrupt elite that is the hope but all that. concerns and suspicions about how zelinsky is going to govern and about his own potential ties to.
6:07 am
the campaign he said very very little in terms of substantial policy plans he said that he's still pro european and he's certainly not willing to qatari cut deals with with russia. but he was pretty tricky as not a servant of the people as his as his t.v. persona was about but a servant of one particular all the dark a man called eagle column or who owns the television station that zelinsky t.v. shows were broadcast dog but zelinsky has claimed all along that it's just a business relationship and that when he entered politics he's been allowed to go in on his own and that he was still and is willing to take on all the oligarchs including who these days is outside of the country and who is accused of
6:08 am
siphoning off billions of dollars of ukrainian money through his own banking banking system so a lot of questions around zielinski. and his lack of experience but tonight at least it seems ukrainians are willing to give this man a child's thank you very much with all the latest from here robyn far stay a walk. that's goes with angeles now i can speak to david dodson who's edited and directed several of la to me is a lengthy films at a time when a reality t.v. star can become president of the united states perhaps it isn't so far cicle for a comedian to become the president of ukraine but were you surprised by slansky victory. yes or no. the last year has been very popular of course in ukraine for you know twelve fifteen years however long it's been that he is in his comedy troupe of are told and you've
6:09 am
been entertaining the country and you know he's at the top of this this larger media company and you cry in the does you know television shows like concerts and feature films they had a vision and everything else oh yeah there's almost iconic presence in pop culture in ukraine so if the people of ukraine have over the past few years then they increasingly dissatisfied with their political will. not altogether surprising they might reach out for someone who has always been a friend to them at least in their entertainment lives he's been a friend to them in their entertainment lives but and in the t.v. series of the people the comedy series he plays a school teacher he suddenly finds himself elected president as a result of his opposition to corruption in the country i mean that that's really not the same as having the academic credentials having the relevant political
6:10 am
experience to take on the challenges in a country like ukraine a country that is at war right now. yes of course there's no question about it you know i personally know the lawyer to be very warm and very sincere he is. very asli interested in learning new things and he's always giving you know the people around him the opportunity to persuade him to convince them of something if you have an issue that you need you know to take up with him but it is of course one hundred percent true that the world is getting into is a fairly ruthless world you know there are people very canny. they have dedicated their lives to you know political manipulation and political achievement and i think you know as sincere as a lot definitely is and as well as i certainly wish and the people of ukraine i hope it won't be too rude awakening when the actually steps into the arena and
6:11 am
deals with these people you know first hand one on one in a situation where they're not altogether motivated or impressed by his celebrity in another or in another world you have spent a great deal of time whacking on numerous projects with him i think that you would perhaps call him a friend do you feel as though he is prepared for that rude awakening. i have to hope so you know he's he is very bright and he is very very. he is very sincere and i keep using that word because i think it makes a difference in how it is that he regards his responsibility this is newer sponsibility is true to the people of ukraine i do believe that he will work harder than anyone to be prepared. i don't know that anybody can really anticipate coming from the world that he's coming from i don't think you can really anticipate
6:12 am
what it is that you're getting into whether or not he's truly prepared i can't honestly say i can honestly say that i do believe that he'll work hard to make himself repaired and i don't think that he'll give anything away that he should. i think he will be conscious at the same time that he's trying to fulfill his his duties to the ukrainian people thank you very much for joining us david del scenario. thank you. to sudan now where protest leaders say they no longer recognize the military group put in place for a transition period of up to two years it follows talks between the army and demonstrators who are calling for an immediate transition to a civilian government ahead of the transitional military council says they're considering protesters demands for a joint military civilian council. or the military council political committee has established communication with all political parties they were asked to provide their respective suggested visions and solutions for the transitional
6:13 am
period and beyond more than one hundred views have been submitted currently examined by the political committee within one week from now the military council will return to them with answers and a final conclusion it is agreed that the former ruling national congress party is out of the process most of the views center on a civil authority and executive government. but protest leaders are saying that their discussions with the military have not been taken seriously and. we reaffirm that we cannot go back to square one we cannot be in three. military blowups we can not allow the former regime to regain power very dream is tempting to reproduce itself we stood good. live now to mohammed val who is following all these developments in the
6:14 am
capital khartoum and mohammed how are protest leaders positioning themselves at the moment are they prepared to completely walk away from talks with the military. well that's what they have said this evening but it remains to be seen whether they will. fulfill that promise or not whether they will really continue to stop and talks with the military council because time of the essence here they have these crowds in the streets they are capitalizing on these cars and the and to see some of these crowds but the understanding is that probably you know if they wait one more week two more weeks to three more weeks they may not be able to go to go and continue to keep so many people in the streets so the military the military council seems to understand that time is playing into their hands they want to wear out the patience and the continuing t.
6:15 am
of the protests they want protesters to be tired of this is the analysis of the protesters so the protesters are trying to give everything they can to invest every power they have in these few days of these few hours today to send the strongest message to the military they want to achieve this before they lose the momentum the two sides seem to be not to be on the same page of course the military council is saying that there is a vast array of components of the social class in sudan which they are listening to talk about more than one hundred proposals from the different components of the social class they're listening to all of the out there studying all those proposals not just the proposals or the ideas coming from the protesters the protesters think that they are the movers and shakers and the owners of this revolution and that's there are so many significant shadowy parties just in name that most of them were
6:16 am
allied to the former president omar bashir and they shouldn't even be listened to they should be just you know ignored just like the. former national congress party so the two sides are not on the same pate. there are differences within the political class about who should be included who should be listened to who should have the final saying in the choice of the members of the government that will rule the civil government the civilian government the military the military council these observateur these differences and playing them playing the all of those sides against each other trying to win time trying to to wait. where are the patients on the nerves of the protesters so it's a very difficult situation coming to a crisis here the time of the is of the essence the military has a spokesman of the military has given a briefing just a while ago in which he did not use that strong language that has been used by the protesters but he said we are receiving proposals we are still studying them we
6:17 am
think we need a week of consultations so that we come to a conclusion and an agreement with the other side he did not comment on the decision of the protesters to cut ties and talks with the political committee which could mean that the military are expecting the protestors probably to tone down their language and come back again to the negotiation table in the next few days thank you very much mohamed vile and. all still ahead for you on the program and prayers for a peaceful future in mali after the political crisis which has seen the prime minister and the entire government resign. and he really just it's a battle that's to be expanded in iraq to cope with the growing number of pell grants. and in support the n.b.a.'s leading scorer of the comes a slow start as least and rockets only one game away in advancing in the playoffs.
