as the thousands displaced are struggling to build shelters play fighting very heavy. shouts eighty to ninety percent of roofs were lost and i found people's families and children. really just pulling together the remains of three thing of housing to try and take some shelter from the rain that's been ongoing and the other thing that they found was that really people have been quite terrified they've been in the open for thirty six as it and it's estimated that the winds from the psych loan were blowing extremely hot so about twenty four hours they've passed over some of these places and these these are areas where there's not really any experience of this type of installment in living memory so really quite terrifying and leaving populations in a state shock there's also a prediction that the stormy past back over the sea and really intensifying into

another cycle and we would be able to say where that would go and it's a very scary scenario for people already face so lots in the last couple of months in mozambique very badly on in the first thing to say is that the response. to disasters has been receiving a relatively low levels of funding so far so we're really happy that you're giving this some coverage we dodged that those that can't donate money and we're really pushing governments as well to top up the u.n. appeal to cyclon it die. all right we've got plenty more ahead on this news out. of the one region in spain pinning its hopes for independence on the outcome of sunday's election. and south africa as it marks twenty five years of the end of apartheid. ferrari's young star makes it it

makes a big mistake in qualifying for the. free that's ahead in sports. so all that still ahead but first sri lanka's president has banned two muslim groups accused of being behind the easter sunday bombings the national. security forces have been carrying out raids to round up more suspects sunday mass said catholic churches has been cancelled a curfew is still in effect in the eastern city of calm and i after a gun battle between security forces and suspected attackers florence louis reports from colombo. security forces in sri lanka conducted more raids and made more arrests on saturday in the western town of which is one of the towns that was attacked on sunday police conducted raids in a mostly muslim neighborhood and made several arrests including the deputy mayor
8:03 am
and then in the eastern town of trincomalee navy police arrested a man and found on him gel explosives as well as more than two hundred detonators in the east is also where police conducted house to house a great looking for suspected gunman a day off to a gunfight that erupted between five and security forces now all these developments show just how fragile the security situation is how quickly it can deteriorate and of course the latest developments lend even more weight to what authorities have been warning the possibility of attacks. the hunt for suspects after the easter sunday bombings and security forces to this neighborhood in the town of carbonite on the east coast. shortly after they arrived they say they came under attack a gun battle ensued and some of the fighters are said to have such of explosions in

more suspects with access to explosives are still on the loose florence li al jazeera colombo. a man is in custody in the u.s. after a shooting at a synagogue in the city of california four people were injured in the attack on the chabad synagogue shooting happened just after celebrations had begun to mark the final day of passover. he has been following this story for us from washington so she what more do we know about this. in fact we can now confirm that one adult female has succumbed to her wounds so that's one adult female who has died in this attack two adult males and one female child are said to be in stable condition in hospital what we understand there is around eight hundred g m t it's last day of passover so the ceremonies are due to begin at this out the synagogue about thirty seven kilometers north of san diego in california around eight hundred thirty eight
8:07 am
hundred thirty two g.m.t. but the police got a call the troops were being fired within the synagogue and authorities were racing to the scene what we understand is a nineteen year old white male from san diego thirty to thirty seven miles south was inside using an assault style weapon according to police officers thought perhaps perhaps in a office dean or something very popular weapon here in the united states and four people were injured interestingly then he left the sort of dog and was pursued by a member of the congregation who was an off duty border patrol agent who was armed who followed of a shot at the gunman as he drove away perhaps hitting the car according to law enforcement were not doing any other damage but then as authorities were racing to the scene they receive a message all new the only on the on the communication systems from the shooter saying this is my location come and get me effectively and authorities approached
8:08 am
his car he immediately surrendered so that's how it all ended now what we're trying to figure out is the motivation but double trump certainly and indeed some local officials already stressed and this was an anti semitic attack it is notable this did occur six months to the day since the pittsburgh synagogue shooting last year. if this separate these go to the. people that were affected the family is. obviously right. now based on my last conversation looks like a hate crime arguably. arguably with respect to the city california near san diego and. we're doing some very heavy research we'll see what happens what comes up at this moment it looks like a hate crime but my deepest sympathies to all of those affected. president trump there giving his reaction to what he did as you say the authorities treating as
8:09 am
a hate crime saying that it was hard to believe but many people though will be saying it's not that hard to believe given the spate of hate crimes that have we've seen in the u.s. in recent times for which the president has him self has come under criticism for not doing enough to address she had. right we are those always we should always be clear we should always put this is the context of u.s. history the u.s. has a long history of white supremacist violence against against minorities but clearly there has been a spike donald trump and this is been an issue just in the last week where once again he said that the the extreme right wing rally in charlottesville and twenty seventeen there were good people on both sides even though this was an explicitly far right wing white supremacist rally where anti semitic trumpets drums were made it's interesting too that the n.b.c. at least has named the gunman and the house has been. a sort of manifest of sorts
8:10 am
in the name off of this government if it is indeed this person that has been circulating in the last few hours which is a white supremacist anti semitic christian fundamentalist document where all sorts of the usual tropes we hear against jews are being mentioned and so on interestingly there if this is indeed written by the government he doesn't think donald trump is right wing enough but this will add to that idea of the growing confidence of white supremacists in the u.s. so i think we can if this is confirmed to be a hate crime we can expect this to be politicized pretty quickly not just from the left but also from the right because the old trump is using the rise now of the some of the crimes as part of his platform to going into twenty twenty which is suggesting that the democrats are anti semitic party because more and more speaking out against the illegal occupation of palestine and against the extreme right wing government of binyamin netanyahu this is along with the strategy of an yahoo to. criticism of the occupation of the violence of the occupation without the semitism don't trump is now using that as his campaign platform so it will be interesting to
8:11 am
alter it actually has a big campaign rally coming up it will be interesting to see whether this does immediately get sucked in to that political rhetoric that the we're seeing around the issue about the semitism right now. thanks very much you have a chance the life i stand in washington. our leader of hamas has called on palestinians to unite against donald trump's a peace plan is made her near says the deal does not include plans for a palestinian state and says the u.s. president is favoring israel is calling for a committee that includes national regional and international players details of transplant are still not known. egypt will not accept an infringement of its sovereignty and we as palestinians will not agree to anybody else having sovereignty over our land we also reject being moved to an alternative homeland in jordan venezuela has said it will withdraw from the

if you're in eastern canada the moment opined to go there take a bite it's very wet in fact is flooded from all two or three montreal not towards new brunswick there is flooding on the ground this rain not coming out of the sky and it's still called north the snow in places just add to the mix because melting snow is part of the problem that goes away so that sunday by day should be a better looking picture and the next system coming in is much weaker is a bit of rain maybe in new york or just across the border maybe but nothing much to it and it's broken up further west so you've got sort of places to reason dallas no showers and if you follow the tail end apart from a couple showers maybe in somewhere like new mexico colorado utah it's dry but above my head it's the elephant in the room what is it doing snowing in late april
8:16 am
or early makes a little bit late in the season to do that and unfortunately from sunday to monday that spreads across the northern plains states towards the midwest was right into its south so it's not really cold enough to sustain much snow on the ground it indicates there's still plenty of cold air rock and in the caribbean it's a picture of increasing breeze and cloud with a few showers mostly light the bigger ones are around in haiti jamaica cuba and the bahamas the next two days. overthrown and exiled they appoint again same rule all this race meeting you i mean to much film about the struggle of the elected leader of madagascar to return to his country and reinstate his presidency he knows that the troops from spying and you. know do you think this issue is the fault of the

hello again you're watching i just there a reminder of our top stories this hour sudan's protest leaders and the army have reached a deal to form a joint civilian and military transitional council this comes after weeks of protests calling on the military to immediately hand over power to a civilian government. mozambique's government has urged people to move to higher ground in the wake of another powerful cycle or cost this predicting more heavy rain and that could lead to flooding and mudslides. sri lanka's president has banned two groups accused of being behind the easter sunday bombings warnings of more attacks to come so sunday mass at catholic churches has been cancelled a curfew is still in effect in the eastern city of cullman i after a gun battle with suspected attackers. mexico is dealing with unprecedented numbers of foreign migrants seeking a new life over the border in the united states many thousands of them have walked
8:19 am
all the way from guatemala honduras and other countries and that's despite warnings from president trump that they're not welcome manimal rapper low has a story. outside a small church and don't i love mexico several dozen central american migrants are taking a break from the exhausting heat for most of these people faith centers like this church are among the few places left where they still feel welcome. to notice it all in is from us and is here with eight members of her family she says she was recently chased down by mexican immigration agents and hasn't found much sympathy from the mexican people but a symbol that when they think we're criminals but we're not it's true there are all kinds of people in the caravans but we're being cursed for the sins of others some places we've been one even let us use the toilets and my kids have been denied water how could you deny a child water we're all human beings. over the past few months in mexico there's
8:20 am
been a shift in public opinion toward migrants many business leaders in the state of chiapas have closed their doors to central americans publishing videos online for train migrants as disease ridden criminals people in chiapas no longer come out to donate food and water like they once did it would appear the migrant caravans have worn out their welcome. droney leave into also from onto the us says that without support from local communities migrant shelters are a last resort but the shelters can't provide for everyone. is that coming up we're going to say like oh now you we're not on this journey because we want to hurt anyone and we're here because we want to better lives for our families we would never hurt anyone here in mexico they are brothers and we respect them but at the same time we wish they would stand by us because they do feel there is a lot of discrimination against us migrants and that is not fair. several hundred migrants have gathered along the train tracks their goal is to head as far north as
8:21 am
possible. we're standing atop a train car in the town of arriaga in southern mexico many migrants who are worried about being detained while walking on the side of the road will opt for hopping on one of these freight trains this one's called la vista or the beast but hopping on top of one of these trains carries its own risks and over the years many migrants have died falling off the sides of these train cars. just before sunset migrants began to rush the train many of them women with young children. no longer feeling safe traveling in caravans it appears migrants are resorting to the back roads and train routes of the past even if it means a whole new set of risks. when measured up a new disease mexico. a colombian tribunals has ordered the arrest of a former rebel commander because he failed to take part in the reconciliation process head in and. lay down his weapons and twenty sixteen in
8:22 am
a special tribunal ruled he'd failed to provide testimony about war crimes thousands of former fox guerrillas have taken part in the peace process and in return gotten assurances that they would not serve jail time. the united states commission on international religious freedom is calling on its state department to act against saudi arabia the kingdom executed thirty seven people on tuesday activists say most of them who are shias the e.u. has also raised concerns saying the executions would stoke sectarian tensions on a dean man's is serving as a commissioner on the u.s. commission for international religious freedom and she joins us now via skype from philadelphia thanks very much for being with us. thanks for having me i appreciate you letting me join your church and i want to ask you first of all then what does your commission hope to accomplish with this decision. well we really feel it's
8:23 am
important. for the u.s. government to consider lifting a longstanding waiver we give saudi arabia a pass for the gracious violation of their pledges freedom and so so this is giving us an opportunity to draw our attention to the bible which is there and ask the government to reconsider that greater. now as i understand it you you were appointed by president trump and as we know the trumpet ministration has remained steadfast in its support for saudi arabia despite all of the negative headlines the latest news that the executions. the killing of course of journalist jamal khashoggi and some of the other violations that were reported in the news human rights violations in the kingdom so what sort of response have you gotten from from the state department first of all on this and do you expect this to make any difference. you know the sea department really encourages us to speak openly
8:24 am
about religious freedom violation they need to hold back because of our relationship with the illustration so the u.s. mission under this religious freedom we are laser focused on religious freedom so unlike the state department we don't take into account the bilateral relationship security all the other things that the state department has to consider we were formed by congress not twenty years ago in order to do this so that we could call out violations without any of anything else interfering and so we don't have the same constraints of the statement we're able to make the kind of recommendations without having any any any cloud edition so. what do you say to to those who argue that. decisions like this are largely symbolic and they without any concrete action in the form of you know economic sanctions or
8:25 am
efforts to scrap. financial deals and so on with with countries like saudi saudi arabia this one really make much difference in terms of their policies. now i disagree that i think it opens the door for us to dialogue in there are some of us commissioners who had conversations with. with the saudi government i visited in september and met with a whole lot of government officials i met with a lot of people who care deeply about the country they talked a lot about moving towards modernization in religious freedom and so it's important for us to speak out because when these things happen if we don't speak out it's like giving a country a pass for doing that so we really do feel it can make a difference and we've seen countries reach at last and ask us how how they can kind of heartless how can they not be called out by the commission and were able to go through specific things that you can do that would open up religious freedom their country so we really do feel see that we're making a difference and we're still books important to speak the truth and the man's are good to talk to it's great being and thank you.

in spain will head to the polls on sunday for their third election in less than five years no single party is projected to win an outright majority after a campaign that's been dominated by the rise of the far right and the issue of catalonians independence sunny day care has more. in the capital madrid there was a awful lot of anticipation as to how the results of these elections are set to turn out the most fragmented seen in years unprecedented situation for this country which has seen really the dominance of two major parties the left wing socialist and the right wing people's party but dissatisfaction with that status quo has allowed the new parties to emerge through that gap of the socialists currently ahead in the polls look set to take most of the votes but they still will lack any
8:27 am
kind of majority to be able to fully form a government they will have to go into coalition if they cannot do that then that falls on the right when people's party will then have to do a deal with the far right party party that has been draining the support from the people's party for the way that it has galvanized anger at the situation in catalonia meanwhile heads of that vote forty percent of the electorate are still undecided and that is something that party leaders have been grappling with all the way to the polls and many people in catalonia hope sunday's results will help their cause independence leaders have been rallying supporters some of them from prison john holl reports. the litters of support arrive from regularly after eighteen months in prison and on trial in a group catalans haven't forgotten pro independence former interior minister for

him and his wife lara and their daughters know that you are kim hasn't forgotten them. as well in losing my dozen reasons. next year we don't celebrate together and his mission is. the trial of twelve catalan independence leaders on charges of rebellion sedition and misuse of public funds follows the region's referendum and unilateral declaration of independence which was met by police violence in two thousand and seventeen it's taken on heavy significance for a movement struggling to reassert itself last in search of a way to achieve its goal. i see very clearly that people don't feel like compromising in the sense of giving up of recognising that they are renouncing it i don't see that it is possible that some people may think that we need more time that it doesn't have to be an immediate but
8:29 am
i don't see any reason nation at all if not now then what is to happen in the interim at the national level spain's socialist government may pay a heavy price in this weekend's election for its attempts to negotiate over catalonia a surge in support for the far right nationalist vox party risks dragging the entire political landscape to the right making a compromise over cattle and separatist aspirations seem less likely than ever if there is to the right and the radical right in spain everything is going to be more difficult because these parties in the right have the explicit proposal of imposing itself. again so it's not going to be only a matter off of. independence project but they're very. very core of the government and the old don i mean that was recovered during their off of the market and so perhaps inevitably there's a quiet shift towards

a more pragmatic approach this is business it is hard to see the republican unless the main political party of the roughly fifty percent of catalonia some support independence some of its leaders as you can see are in prison addressing the crowd here by live video link the message increasingly is that unilateral action didn't work the way forward now is through dialogue and political legitimacy. that means winning as many seats as possible in the national parliament and influencing change from within the dream of independence isn't getting any closer but it does remain very much alive. barcelona. in france antigovernment yellow vest protesters have charged the police in the city of strasbourg the group tried to cross a bridge to get to the european parliament but was pushed back by riot police it is the twenty fourth weekend in a row the yellow vest demonstrations have been held across france protests come despite president mccraw announcing
