application in more than two hundred years plus there's a mood. for our politicians to get together. a priest to criticize politicians at the funeral of murdered journalist and byram a key calls for unity. on paul recent doha with the sport its advantage i.x. in the champions league semifinals maybe tottenham to move a step closer to the biggest much in european club football. we begin the news hour in venezuela where the government says a coup attempt by the opposition is being defeated this follows an earlier call by the opposition leader one to remove president nicolas maduro thousands of demonstrators have clashed with security forces outside an airbase in caracas armored national guard vehicles ran down protesters while soldiers used tear gas

and live a nation to break up the crowds the violence broke out after an early morning call to action by wide though from the lack of a lot of air base in a video shared online he said he had begun the quote final phase of a plan to oust lead to a row and urged the military to join him why don't was accompanied by a well known. position the figure leopoldo lopez who had been freed from house arrest he says he was released by members of the army on the orders of lopez and his family have now sought refuge at the chilean embassy a warning some viewers may find images in this report now from side a hideout the starving. this is how an homage to military vehicle in caracas responded to antigovernment protesters the crowds had come out after all call by opposition leader one to join him and soldiers that have defected. these men are

fighting against the venezuelan military they want support for. the fighting continues between forces loyal to and against president nicolas maduro in caracas crowds gathered to join the opposition. was that's despite the government vowing to end what it calls an attempt to cool it so i get out of here because they've called upon us the military is pushing us away but you came here in peace when. we went to the us. had posted this video on social media saying he now has support from soldiers to begin what's he called the final phase of a plan to remove president maduro. hours later the man who declared himself as interior president in january called for more members of the military and public to

join. the political will for the polish for everyone to come out into the streets at this moment and to back what we've built over the years we're now here in the streets not only with the international community and not only our citizens but now with the national forces who are backing the citizens the future and progress so it's an airport. moment for venezuela. here paul de lopez also came out in support of quiet just hours after being released from house arrest the prominent opposition figure was accused of inciting violence during antigovernment protests in twenty fourteen he says he was let's go by soldiers from declared their loyalty to quite so and thinks more will join. the custodians are with us because stadiums came along that have been part of this process came with us and i'm convinced that there will be many more for the military force who will join this process. i owe. but it's not everyone is

convinced the door supporters have gathered near the presidential palace to show their support for their leader right now because it was there's no doubt the people of venezuela or addressing his conferred to us in history to defend our country from the legacy of hugo chavez an illegitimate illegal president of venezuela nicholas material but. there's been strong international reaction spain has warned against bloodshed while the united states has once again stressed its support for why don't and the removal of president maduro so afraid at al-jazeera let's go live now to caracas and speak to political analyst amy respond to les who witnessed that those protests earlier on today mr pantelis thank you so much for joining us first of all what is the current situation like now in caracas. we've got an situation
12:06 am
right now in caracas because a complete uncertainty we have most of in israel as a rabbi you know it has a lot of censorship so there is no hope of c.c.r. information if you don't have any media reporting about the situation and most of the people we are going to the social media to find some information on the menu bam are a fake news or with false stories about on the show people they don't know what is going all we don't know where these players the model we don't even know where it is a but i didn't like the room they didn't break the weddell so moment everybody doesn't know what's going on asking the relatives friends if someone has a any information and some an information that has come out of his that you know faldo lopez who of course food with the one who i don't know when that message was made is actually sought refuge in the chilean embassy in caracas he was actually
12:07 am
previously under house arrest and had presumably been allowed out or so he said by the military why those orders i mean what do you make of all of that news coming out there for the lopez refugee in a foreign embassy you can close to look at the low perceived but he's in the a bus the as a guest in order to negotiate we're the government i don't know if you bought this true or not but within that i'm feeling older people do some disappointment people are pulled back to look for the low person who given to work with wide all that would be on the streets writing against nicholas my ludo their support for their position and obviously. we've recently moved the many people realized or told about the the uprising is all there and they are the leaders not of the seeking for the. order to be saved we don't know what is. what is to hold or not. yes i mean we have to specify of course you know it's still day of course as we can
12:08 am
see in caracas and i guess the next few hours are crucial but from where we stand now do you think that perhaps one point zero has miscalculated the kind of support he would have had or or thought he had from the military and other players infinites well i think it is all. this uprising today it's all the luck of organization coordination i think they went ahead of their plans i don't know why but it wasn't very well organized or even organized so i suppose the way though in the local the locals with fear that something can happen before. it will be able to hold their plans political analyst amy to respond to this joining us live now from caracas us or thank you for sharing your views with us let's go live now to daniel schorr i'm were daniel dramatic scenes in venezuela but right now it does seem that it has
12:09 am
actually triggered the downfall of nicolas for the. know like i said to me through a sane just now it does look as though the might possibly have miscalculated he gambled he was hoping to have more military leave then leave their barracks and support him he certainly had some surrounding him in the video that was taken in the early hours outside like a lot of ace but not enough to make to oust nicolas maduro and we've seen demonstrations before in the six years that nicolas maduro has been in power two thousand and fourteen a room most daily tens of thousands of venezuelans on the street the situation since then has only got worse shortages of food and medicine millions of venezuelans have left the country the crime rate is high inflation is out of control yet nicolas maduro holds on he says a lot of opposition obviously people are unhappy there's a great deal of discontent but at the same time it doesn't need necessarily that
12:10 am
all those people who dislike nicolas maduro are supporting one way though in leopoldo lopez that have caught between two stools they don't like what they've got and they don't much like what's to come either so there's a bit of a dilemma there and it does look as though nicolas maduro for now at least is holding on is consolidating his position and will be delighted with that he's done it again is probably what he would say danny as you say i guess some people in venezuela are torn between a different way though but other countries and for example the united states are very clear about who they prefer are the u.s. very much support. the u.s. president saying all options are still on the table but the reality is that it doesn't look like any kind of international action any kind of military or otherwise is going to take place in venezuela to i guess make one why don't the official leader of the country. you know there's
12:11 am
a lot of talk of military. actually united states brazil colombia they've they've all expressed support for it all others have suppressed expressed support of asked both from restraint from both sides there's a lot of talk at the united nation is a group of countries who make in lima recently another group in montevideo in europe why to talk about a way forward but they've mostly just been talking they've not been able to bring the two sides together the mood of government or one way to go together to discuss the future of the really does seem like another standoff with demonstrations on the streets supporting nicholas goes one way though others supporting the government it does seem to be more of the same but at the same time as i mentioned the situation the economic and the social situation continues to deteriorate and i read that question how much longer though he seems to hold on for now how much longer can nicolas maduro hold on for and try and there with the latest there on the situation for his will of daniel thank you well we were mentioning it earlier more now on the
12:12 am
reaction from the united states let's hear from the u.s. national security advisor john bolton he says the situation in venezuela is not a coup but a legitimate president trying to take control all options remain on the table i'm simply not going to be more specific to that but recall that right at the beginning three months ago we said that would be a big mistake for me dura and those supporting him to use force against innocent civilians we feel very strongly about it we felt that way then we feel that way now . so reaction from the u.s. meanwhile then as well as ambassador to the u.n. has also been speaking let's cross to the united nations and speak to a diplomatic editor james space james so what has the ambassador been saying. well very fast moving developments and people have been trying to keep up here at the united nations as you say in the last couple of hours ago some well more cargo has been speaking to reporters he has now called for a u.n.
12:13 am
security council meeting let me just make clear though that venezuela's not currently a member of the security council so it can call for a meeting it can't actually itself call a meeting only a member of the security council could do that he says he believes the security council should meet though because he said what we've seen in recent hours which he says is now over from his view has been entirely instigated by the u.s. appleyard whatever there was a very dangerous incident that was supported by the u.s. government they knew what was happening in that unlike in chile in the seventy's or as in any other country in latin america this demonstrates that the u.s. government considers venezuela part of its property and through war they want to destabilize using domestic agents at the. no i pushed him on whether he believed that president maduro had now survived this particular crisis i asked him whether he thought president maduro and be in power in days and
12:14 am
weeks and months and his reply was what we've seen in the last few hours if that's what they've got then president maduro will be in power for the next twenty years are on the security council meeting which as i said venezuela would like to see no word yet from venezuela's close ally russia on whether it will actually call for such a meeting one complicating factor is we are right now at the very end of the month and so germany is giving up its presidency of the security council it rotates to indonesia i think that means it's unlikely we're going to get a meeting in the coming hours although technically the security council could meet at any time on any day at any hour i do think there is quite a strong possibility that we might see a meeting in the coming days worth reminding you barbara though that there's unlikely to be any sort of agreement at the security council and that's because
12:15 am
there are two permanent members the u.s. who supports quieter and russia who supports madeira. james bays diplomatic editor with the latest from the u.n. thank you. and still to come on the al-jazeera news hour the u.s. looks to designate the muslim brotherhood a foreign terror organization just weeks after hosting the u. gyptian president at the white house heavy rain hampers efforts to deliver desperately needed aid to parts of northern mozambique which were flattened by cycling kennett's and could this man challenge for the world heavyweight title or we'll have that story coming up in court. sudanese protesters say the army isn't serious about handing over power to civilians it comes after talks between the military and opposition groups appear to falter over the makeup of a joint ruling body the army says it wants to chair the council which will be the

country until elections are held one hundred reports now from two. so then stop generals warned their patience has limits they want the protesters on the streets of the capital khartoum to remove roadblocks checkpoints and allow trains to bring food supplies across the country or they were there we are responsible and we have to take responsibility as a military council as a transitional military council we have to protect the citizens and protect the law we will not accept any chaos or attack on civilians and their properties and properties of the state and we will deal with this firmly and in accordance with the law this is what you wanted to clarify to the sudanese people we did not want to add insult to injury. the army's warning comes after talks with the opposition hit a snag the two sides have agreed to form a new body to run the country until the next elections the army wants
12:17 am
a majority in the transitional body. and so far it has avoided an escalation that might lead to an armed confrontation and evolve them we have made many concessions for the sake of protecting our nation and preventing scenarios similar to what happened in neighboring countries we want to talk to end quickly so that the tension deescalate. but the young activists behind the mass protest movement toppled president omar al bashir who worry the military is buying time to prevent a civilian takeover. they say they want the army's role as a stick to it and its influence contained during the transitional period. in a press conference on tuesday so that his professional association denounced the military saying they have no desire to give up power to civilians here illegally. the military council is not serious about transferring power to civilians it is clear they want to keep power and retain it for themselves this is unacceptable the
12:18 am
revolution did not take place in order to stop a unilateral military regime and another unilateral military regime therefore this will not be accepted and is not acceptable but strong statements that sound ultimatums have replaced the soft and optimistic language of the last few days casting doubts over the prospects of the talks that are now stalled until further notice. khartoum or protestors have refused to comply with the military's request to remove their roadblocks and barricades remain in place throughout the two mohamed reports that there was a confrontation outside the sudanese military headquarters protesters attacking that demand for a time to civilian rule to the gates of the building that houses the country's military rulers this after the transitional military council last fall the reopening of roads bridges and railways blocked by the protesters that order

completely changed our course for. almost immediately the protesters began reinforcing the body creates they say the military's real intention is to disperse them. the governor's. order i have all but no one can remove those barricades i have been put by the protesters to particular lives and i really can remove it. until now this has been a happy place for weeks the protesters have sought here chanting and singing themselves hoarse but they need peace justice and freedom as tension rises their message to the transitional military council is simply hand over power and. the impact of the blockade of the somebody's kid bridges is being felt across the cup at a traffic gridlock so called one of the few streets in central hub tunes that are still open they follow solomon has been a taxi driver here for more than twenty years. and was done

business is bad my income has gone down by up to sixty five percent since the roads were closed. four minutes sudanese the fault of going back to anything similar to the bush era years is unbearable and for now the protests. have the protests not destructive but it's all well we would not have seen a close roads or even protests if we didn't have grievances talks between the military council a position parties and protest organizers to form a transitional government a continuing but more deal has been pushed off to several rounds of negotiations the most optimistic hope that the lack of a breakthrough is just another glitch in what is undoubtedly going to be a long process on the talks will eventually bear fruit. out here. but they are certainly not going to. come about the al-jazeera.

the white house says it's considering designating the muslim brotherhood as a foreign terrorist organization the move could bring sanctions against the group and companies and individuals who interact with it egypt's president of the five reportedly urged president donald trump to make the designation egypt the band of the muslim brotherhood after the two thousand and thirteen military military careers and before on this story we can speak to mike hanna who is in washington d.c. for us mike what do we think is behind this decision. well certainly the meeting between president trump and presidency c. earlier this month played a major role in it egypt has been pressing the united states to describe the muslim brotherhood as a terrorist organization since president trump came to power also saudi arabia of course has been discussing this matter with president trump it is likely saudi arabia for example creating the gulf blockade against cutter because of what it
12:22 am
sees as cutter support for the muslim brotherhood but there is a nother possible reason and that is a domestic one certainly president trump looking ahead to the twenty twenty lections is well aware of how well or how distrustful his base is of the muslim brotherhood or indeed any organization that bears the name muslim. and mike so far what's been the response from the muslim brotherhood itself. well the muslim brotherhood has issued a statement saying that it intends to continue what it says it's moderate to political process and the role that it plays in a number of democratic countries in the middle east it also expresses concern that president trump is siding with what the muslim brotherhood calls autocrats such as president fatah al sisi so certainly the muslim brotherhood saying that it is going
12:23 am
to continue its work as a political organization one must remember too that the brotherhood has played a major role in democracies in tunisia in morocco and of course in egypt itself where it came to power in a democratic election in twenty hundred twelve before being deposed by the selfsame presidency see in a military coup so this is going to be a point of concern perhaps should the definitive go through by the united states and that is how does it continue to maintain relations with countries like the newseum morocco jordan all of which have a strong muslim brotherhood participation in their democratic system and then of course there's turkey president one a strong supporter of the muslim brotherhood turkey a very critical component of u.s. policy so there's a lot of problems ahead should the u.s. finally decide in this internal process to go ahead with this move i can there with

the latest on that story from washington d.c. mike thank you. at the u.n. refugee agency has criticized u.s. president trump over proposed new restrictions on asylum seekers' president trump is there acting immigration officials to introduce a fee for asylum applications he also wants to ban those who enter the country legally from working until their claims are approved it's the latest effort by the u.s. government to stem a growing number of central american migrants crossing the southern border. history has been made in japan with the first imperial abdication in more than two hundred years in a brief ceremony of the imperial palace emperor akihito stood out from the throne to make way for his eldest son when have reports now from tokyo. after more than thirty years on the throne emperor akihito made his slow final walk into the serum o'neill room in the imperial palace as was so often the case
12:25 am
throughout his reign he was accompanied and supported by his wife improves michiko akita then spoke for the last time as emperor of japan much it is fortunate that i have been able to perform my duty as imperator would perform trust and respect for the japanese people for thirty years since my ascension to the tram to the people who accepted and supported me as a symbol i express my art felt thanks so much. there was little fanfare all fuss surrounding the ceremony which lasted around ten minutes that low key nature of it was perhaps fitting for an emperor who sought to change the perception of the role one of akihito as legacies is that he modernized the imperial family by attempting to make it relevant and because of that there is still widespread public support for it according to polling and there was also overwhelming support for this abdication. in a surprise speech three years ago he said he felt his health and age would prevent
12:26 am
him performing his duties but he had to stop short of saying he wanted to retire because there was no law allowing for abdication but the message from the palace and the support for his wishes from the public meant the government had little choice but to pass a one off law or allowing for the abdication. to do more with the day of publication i really flipped the point along us all with the emperor has not flew said the happiness and sadness of the people of libya once again the feeling of the prospect and tanks among those at the ceremony the oldest son of akihito crown prince no he told you on wednesday will become the one hundred twenty sixth emperor of japan that will be his day this one belonged to emperor akihito after a few minutes the education was complete the eighty five year old offered a bow and a moment's reflection before leaving the room heading for a quieter life wayne hay al-jazeera tokyo still to come on the al-jazeera news

12:28 am
heavy rain will continue there on wednesday it could be even gusty winds we're going to talk about that but as we go towards thursday going to be seeing that air of low pressure make its way towards western russia and things start to clear up a little bit we do have a isolated areas of pockets of rain right across the region nothing too bad but we are going to be seeing still some lower clouds across much of the region too well here across the west unfortunate for paris you did have a nice day there on wednesday twenty one degrees but now coming down to about fourteen degrees as we go towards thursday with rain in the forecast there well cross the northwestern part of africa we are talking about clouds here across morocco but as we go towards the end of the week those clouds really begin to expand and we also get some rain out of it anywhere from iraq over here towards parts of algeria we are going to see in calls for showers in algiers could be seeing some rain as well which when you went to greece there tunis we do expect to see some rain in your forecast the temperature of twenty four.

radicalism is on the rise across the globe and we're told it's everywhere we're told we're supposed to be highly suspicious of everybody and everything but our government policies aimed at tackling radicalization in fact pushing youngsters to the fringes of society the impact is utopian long and there's only so much we can take before you say ok that's me rethinking radicalization part of the radicalized youth syrians an al-jazeera. it's all too familiar and innocent lives ended in an instant. then grief anger and the debate around firearms but for survivors and families of the four then reality often changes forever. faultlines investigates the long lasting trauma inflicted on communities

army isn't serious about handing over power to civilians hundreds of thousands of people have blocked streets throughout the capital after protest organizers called for a day of civil discipline. let's get more now on events in venezuela and speak to sack he's a commentator and author in latin american affairs from the london school of economics thank you so much for joining us here on well we've heard that leopoldo lopez who was house arrest and stood by one where they made his announcement if it standing up to the door is now in the chilean embassy seeking refuge there i guess that doesn't really bode well for how he thinks that this so-called coup is going you know i think certainly significant i think if they felt that this was actually going to result in a serious change i don't think he would have done what he was thinking this morning when he joined bordeaux and i mean. but it really depends on the military now and so far there's only been
12:32 am
a really kind of mind shift towards quite oh today despite the images from the bridge and so on the venezuela he has two hundred thousand people in it but at the moment it seems like only a small segment of the intelligence service and maybe some of the believe are in national guard switch sides because what we do have been hints. at something like this for a while but presumably you must the felt confident when when he spoke on video what do you think the miscalculation was well from what we're hearing at the moment in venezuela it seems that there were some discussions potentially with other members of the armed forces more significant generals including possibly the defense minister and even the head of the supreme court and if they had actually switch sides and that would have made a difference they're not fully confirmed reports but that would explain the apparent kind of rush to try and get something out really before why dole was arrested which was apparently the threat that was made and so they've tried to do
12:33 am
this on a day that didn't plan to do it that's what i'm hearing a lot of venezuela and you know we've seen very strong support from by the united states john bolton national security adviser speaking out saying that the president is still considering all options how realistic is that really and what kind of impact do you think international support had on like those actions i think is had a very big impact in general since the twenty third of january when he first declared himself a kind of parallel president with dura particularly the link with the u.s. obviously but that in itself causes a very big problem because the ideology of the venezuelan military is very anti imperial obviously the u.s. has a long history of intervention in latin america and one of the pillars of chevy's ma was to reject that so even on a logical level a lot of the military will have a problem with that a lot of the venezuelan people have a problem with that but beyond that there's also u.s. sanctions on
12:34 am
a lot of people in the military the possibility of prosecution for human rights violations and things like so they have good reasons in a way to stick with the duro because if they then subject to prosecution after switch of government. they they would be in big trouble essentially unless they have some kind of off from where they could possibly. amnesty all that kind of thing there's no way really that they're going to switch sides so really the conditions aren't there so it's hard to see why at this particular moment they decided to try and launch this murder and briefly if you can if we do a see you see now that operation freedom so to speak has failed what happens to why though now what could madugalle model have you know in store for him. really i think it could go one of two ways it could be that mother finally kind of makes the leap and feels emboldened by the fact that this doesn't appear to have come off and actually arrests quite o. but then that is something that the u.s.
12:35 am
was very clear about that that was some kind of red line so that would still be quiet bold move i think another option would be to just kind of let this peter out because in itself it kind of has taken away motivation from the opposition potentially every time they try to do this kind of maneuver and it fails it becomes harder for the military to believe that the next one is going to work so in that sense i think you might just let this go back to the kind of stagnation we had prevailed late we've seen for months basic you said commentator and also in latin american affairs are thinking of. aid agencies say that they're struggling to deliver aid to mozambique because of heavy rain which is causing flooding and mudslides and the people have been confirmed dead after last week's cycle kenis authoritatively has the latest. tina shoed and her family salvage what they can from their flooded home like thousands of houses in the pool city of pemba it was
