6:52 pm
what benjamin netanyahu said at the beginning of his regular weekly cabinet meeting saying that these massive attacks as he called them against what he said were terrorist elements inside gaza would continue talking about the reinforcements that he's sending to the area in terms of israeli artillery infantry and armored corps that came after we'd already heard from the army that they were sending an extra armored brigade to the area just in the last few minutes in fact indeed just as we were hearing that sound coming out of gaza that somebody coming out of gaza behind us we could hear more what sounded like iron dome interceptions of rocket fire coming out from the gaza strip five minutes before we came to where we saw some of those intersections just over gaza territory behind us about five or six rockets being intercepted so the israeli army says that there were some four hundred fifty rockets that have been fired so far that number i think will rise given that we

a speechwriter for prime minister ariel sharon thanks very much for being with us. so that i didn't know west jerusalem was occupied i mean people do say east jerusalem is although i don't agree well what the question was for me is all the pied that's a fact it's not recognized under international law but that's a subject for another discussion i want to ask you about what's happening we want to ask you about what's happening in gaza right now what do you see as the prospects for a cease fire at this point well first of all it's not a great way to start the holy month of ramadan i mean this is really bad all around for certainly the people living in gaza and of course the israelis who yesterday were bombarded with hundreds of rocket attacks and that's still going on the prospects for a cease fire are the same as they were meaning prime minister netanyahu seems very committed about not escalating what's going on he seems very concerned about the

humanitarian issues there and in fact was highly criticized over the course of the last number of months for making certain concessions and for allowing money to come in the qatari money which is being paid for some hamas salaries and for some other humanitarian issues in gaza so he's really acted responsibly he's not interested in escalation i think the question is is what does the other side want what is the mosque going to do and why they escalated at this point and what are they hoping to get out of this and we just heard the israeli prime minister saying that he has ordered the military military to continue to step up these attacks on the gaza strip and we were just reporting of that palestinian civilians killed including a fourteen month old baby so how does that square with what you're saying that the israelis are not escalating this. well israel is responding to hundreds of rockets

being fired into its civilian population yesterday and today meaning so israel has to stop that stopping that is hitting military targets you have i even heard in your report that the israeli military called up a building to make sure that there were civilians that were evacuated so there is concern that civilians are not caught in the crossfire but we know from past instances both with buildings and when the palestinian leadership their hamas leadership is put twelve and thirteen and fourteen and fifteen year olds to charge the fence that they use children and sometimes women as human shields which is why i don't want to send enough air so that i don't really know what it's almost a double war crime what evidence do you have to say that that the hamas leadership is directing fourteen and fifteen year olds to do this because this gets to i want to get to my next question which is the context in which all of this is happening. because. we have you thin in gaza seventy seventy percent youth unemployment

in gaza a health care system that is collapse and society there are drinking poisonous were all of this is a result of a more than ten year blockade that israel has directed on gaza and many palestinians we speak to there are saying that they have no other choice than to do what they are doing these protests along the border they haven't said that hamm ass or anybody else has been directing them to do this you know ok so again maybe we can we can argue you can have your perspective i can have mine. we can settle it i'm just guessing i was and i see it fact. you know and if you look at who's been shot at the border and who goes up and you look at the pictures of twelve year olds on the fence throwing flaming molotov cocktails and flaming kites it is a little bit different but that's your perspective the u.s. the fact is is that the people are not drinking clean water there and there is

israel is monitoring what goes in there simply because the thousands hundreds of thousands of tons of cement that have gone in in the past ten years are mostly used for bunkers for the hamas leadership or they're used to dig tunnels instead of using that aid whether it's food whether it's cement whether it's of money or other things to take care of the civilian population there which is in dire straits at this point there's no question that there is a humanitarian issues there the question is you know what does come os do with the fifteen million dollars that they get it you know they pay themselves salaries and what are they doing for the people there and why are they taking all of the resources that are coming in and using them to fight israelis meaning you know prime minister netanyahu and israel has tried in a number of occasions both to allow certain aid in allow goods in but oftentimes those those goods are used in order to attack israel so you know it's unfortunate for the palestinian people because there's two million people.
