no other news organizations. were able to do it properly. that is our strength. al-jazeera. and i'm richelle carey this is the news hour live from doha coming up in the next 60 minutes sudan's ousted president omar al bashir is charged with killing protesters during the upheaval that ended his rule but there's new trouble on the streets of khartoum. copies of poe's across sri lanka after attacks on mosques and muslim businesses social media is shut down. in london with the latest from europe including the ones america if needs to mock some
9:01 pm
restraint is tensions wrong with the world. taking the trade war up another level china strikes back at the u.s. with even more tariffs. in this news hour with developments in sudan alsa president omar al bashir has been charged with killing and inciting to kill protesters in the 4 months before he was forced out of power and april more than 50 demonstrators are reported to have been killed the crowds of protesters from maine on the streets of the capital khartoum and security forces are being accused of using excessive force in the past few days tear gas and live rounds have been fired at crowds it's just gone 9 pm in khartoum morgan is live for us with so here but there's a lot to cover 1st let's talk about what do we know about this announcement of the charges against omar al bashir. well rochelle what we do know is that the former president are going to be here and his close
9:02 pm
a close aides are being charged with inciting and killing and participation in the killing of protesters of course the protests started since december and the government is saying that 38 people have been killed but rights groups and the central doctors' committee which has been documenting the number of people who have been killed say at least 90 people so president of former president on one of bashir is being charged with inciting and participation in the killing of these protesters including people who died within the cells of a secret national security services now the article he's being charged under is article $130.00 according to the sudan law act and the punishment for that is death if proven guilty so we're yet to hear from the state attorney's office when he will be presented to trial for trial what his that he would be if he's going to plead guilty or not a lot of things are yet to find out but what we do know for sure right now is that if convicted president onward former president ahmed bashir will be charged will be punished by death ok and what do we know about where this talks between the 2 sides
9:03 pm
. well the opposition coalition and the military council are still going to continue their rounds of talks they started their 1st one today and it's set to go for 3 days and will end the day after the opposition and the court and the a and the government and the military council came out and said that they have agreed on the structure of the of the transitional government but they yet to agree on how much a presentation the military council will get that was one point of contention they said that the more they're going to talk about how long the transitional period should be the military council has been very in insistent on a 2 year transition period while the opposition coalition wanted a 4 year transitional period that's something they said they're going to talk in the coming days but in the meantime protesters on the ground are not happy with the military council we've we've been there earlier we've seen rapid support forces which is part of the military's firing tear gas find tear gas and live ammunition of protesters to protest as injured we've talked in that we've spoken to activists and they're saying that they are still right rounds of life
9:04 pm
a mission fired and tear gas so while the talks are continuing between the opposition coalition and the military council the protesters on the ground which the opposition regarded as their pressure cards against the military council are not happy with the moves being made by the military council at the moment to show ok have a morgan live press in khartoum thank you. siddons protesters say they will not say ground to the military rulers and a vow to continue their demonstrations outside their army headquarters to all of their demands are met ominous are met some of them in the capital khartoum. at the entrance to the venue of the protests vehicles belonging to the sudanese rapid security forces a ton. of just us guarding the entrance to the square say the security men welcome here some of us you know just we are not afraid of the armed forces or anyone else they can bring as many of them as they want we won't leave here it's either we die here or we get a civilian government. tension is rising at the square with the protesters fearing
9:05 pm
attempts to disperse. the protesters responded by fortifying buddy kids around their comp and calling for more people to rally with them their aim is to increase pressure on the military leadership to handle the politics of billions. we've closed every entrance to the square and we're not opening until we know what the forces are up to they've been attacking us yet we've been peaceful. the protest the son libyan nothing to chance they say they don't want to be quiet time away as one of the security forces come full of them the protests off so far off one of them the only leverage they harbor against the transitional military council and they say that multiple committee. they have also called some of the magistrates leading to the central business district of the coppertone temples are quick to flare between the protesters and frustrated malta wrists including military officers.
9:06 pm
even ambulances fitting the sickest. of the protesters. before being allowed to. cars and buses no longer apply these routes into the city so people entering the city from these sides are forced to walk. i wasn't good at doing that it's very difficult we were forced to get off the bus because of the close road we will be forced to walk home later protesters and security forces also confronted each other in the suburbs of the city the deadlock in talks between the a position on the military is adding to the tension on monday the military council announced they had resumed talks with the opposition and we're making progress will break out but unless a deal is reached soon a confrontation between the protesters and security forces seems almost sutton. her to. ensure a long and overnight curfew being enforced nationwide after attacks on mosques and
9:07 pm
muslim owned businesses and the government sparking social media apps to prevent the spread of false information from sparking bench attacks alleges tension is high following the easter sunday attacks last month which killed at least $250.00 people now fernandes joins us live from sri lanka now so now there are a few hours into this curfew now houses all playing out. the situation was quite done earlier busy busy on in the afternoon and going into the evening particularly in the towns that we had northwest of the capital colombo there were several towns which tended to be flashpoints where you had violence erupting you had with businesses busy very close that were being. such a number of these places being torched by unrelieved basically mobs there were
9:08 pm
a mix of people some reacting to post on social media others essentially being carried by the momentum by the sort of anti muslim sentiment that was beaten that she waited over the last couple of hours and they were giving went to emotions and frustrations over the years we've that have been building over the last few weeks here in sri lanka but since the clampdown over the police emergency starting with those flashpoint towns and then extended einen wide busy at the moment that is an uneasy calm the security forces and the police using strong arm of the law literally there are a huge amount of busy security forces that have moved into these flashpoints we've had pictures coming in from some of our people in the ground that show water
9:09 pm
cannons for dispersing of crowds we've seen extra security on the streets and a very sort of a heavy presence to try and contain and ensure that this violence doesn't spread so now it's always controversial when social media is is totally shut down and an open society there it's controversial thing to do but having said that can you tell me about some of the things the way that that social media was playing and so the tensions. absolutely we've had at least one came to the beginning of all this violence to show busy that pointed does risky to the social media as the cause as the spawn that started off so we didn't have the post by. by busy a young businessman essentially leading to the fact that some the services had resumed once again you know along the lines of busy it being too early and people
9:10 pm
should be setting breaking because they would because i need to know that just that comment drew the i obviously of the christian community. surrounded this young man reported to be a ms in business and surrounded the 6 of business and from that on it was almost a domino effect. the premises for a sack and then on you did have other incidences as was now there's also been a lot of busy sort of scam on the ring and humans that have been spread on social media on these platforms being passed on 5 obviously given the comments that this country so on these 5 no one wants to be caught napping no busy one to wants to take the risk so every time there's a story that you know that is and then there's going to be a massive explosion in any number of cities you know warning of explosives event
9:11 pm
those warning of assailants who are going house to i was attacking people people of becoming very very steady almost low just and prudent takes a backseat and literally panic in time annoyance takes over and that's what we've been seeing the show so this is not helping obviously in terms of restoring calm allowing people to get back to their day to day activities because every time things appear to be 2nd. there's a new wave of violence. that kind of. really. being. all around and that is one of the. restrictions social media. tend to. make. for the violence tensions have said.
9:12 pm
but something. i mean even the. busy busy 5 very very clear saying that the security forces are. all options to them and they 1 are very very hard on anyone. violence. 1 against anyone. else and as life for us and sri lanka thank you and now. markets are plunging off the trade war between the world's 2 biggest economy steps even further officials in beijing have announced they are raising tariffs on $60000000000.00 worth of u.s. imports starting june 1st made this in response to the announcement from donald
9:13 pm
trump on friday that the u.s. is doubling duties on chinese products for $200000000000.00 retaliate or the measures have rattled global stock markets and heightened fears of a prolonged trade war in the world's biggest economy china is playing the waiting game as the u.s. heads towards the election season as a transitional reports from beijing. as for the impact on chinese consumers from this trade war it's really hard to detect certainly there are no signs of panic no long queues outside of shops but several months from now if the president from delivers on his promise to basically you know tax everything that china exports to the united states then of course you could start to see a negative impact but of course you know the state controlled media here will make sure that no negative coverage appears in the media and of course unlike president donald trump xi jinping doesn't have to worry about reelection and of course less
9:14 pm
than a few months from now we will be entering the election cycle in the united states and the feeling among some analysts is that because of that china is playing for time it knows that in the swing states there are farmers who are being hurt by these terrorists and these are farmers who may not be able to endure a 2nd year of losses u.s. stocks have tumbled sharply on monday after china's planning for talia tory terrace ellison is at the new york stock exchange to give us a fuller picture of him how this is all playing out day. yes not very good quite frankly this is shaping up to be one of the worst days on wall street since january 3rd of this year so that gives you an idea of how bad it's been so far on this monday there's a lot of worries the markets do not like uncertainty and that's exactly what we're seeing now with the trade war between china and the united states that has escalated significantly now what we've seen on wall street is that the dow was down
9:15 pm
about 400 then it went down about 500 just about an hour ago it was down more than 700 it's gained back a little it's just over down over 600 just down a little above 600 at this point but it's gotten worse throughout the day not better let's look at the dow all 30 companies that are on the dow all of them except one is in the red but what's really interesting about today what has traders really worried is the the depth of this fall it's hitting all industries let's take a look at apple the world's largest technology company down 5 percent about 80 percent of apple's products are made in china boeing one of the world's if not the world's biggest aerospace company down about 4 percent there is worries that china might try to target boeing specifically and then caterpillar which is a company the biggest in the world that makes. construction heavy equipment construction products and heavy equipment big trucks and stuff like this huge
9:16 pm
company it's down 5 percent so you're seeing technology aerospace heavy machinery industry type companies all of them taking huge hits on the stock market and why does this matter to the rest of the world as one trader said global growth comes down as soon as there's a trade war between the world's 2 biggest economies the world of venture is going to feel and that's why we're seeing companies on the stock market that have nothing to do with trade between the u.s. and china also in the red on monday a lot of worry here on wall street all right dave allison though with the latest in the new york stock exchange thank you. when i'm ahead of the news hour and quitting and jail in britain now wanted man in sweden a rape case is reopened against wiki leaks founder julian assange last i requote reporting from lima protein island in oxford nor were ordinary a richer and broader birthrate but author of the course have the big oral property . and he might be

a barrel of laughs but tyson fury has some serious words for the heavyweight boxing division we'll hear what he had to say in sport. as sector state my pompei 0 has made a surprise trip to brussels to discuss rising tensions with iran for more we can cross to felicity bard our european prague castle and our 1st city thanks michelle yes the european union has told mike pump air that it fully supports the international nuclear deal with iran and has called only us to show mark simone restraints held talks with the foreign ministers during the unexpected stopover in brussels the blocks foreign policy chief expressed concern that u.s. strategy towards terror on carries grave risks falls week iran announced it was scaling back some commitments on the 2050 nuclear deal. michael pale heard that very clearly today from the from the us not only from myself but also from the

other ministers of feeling the states that. we are living in a crucial delicate moment where. the most relevant. attitude to take the most responsible attitude to take is we believe should be and that of maximum maximum restraint avoiding any escalation. well our desire is to tasha butler is following developments for us in brussels so natasha might be in brussels then to talk to for ministers a bounce who ran do we know what came out about meeting well it seems that if the us secretary of state might pompei or came to brussels in order to try and weaken the resolve of e.u. foreign ministers and their support for the 2015 nuclear deal then he would have got away disappointed because as you heard there the use foreign policy chief
9:19 pm
federica more greeny said that as far as the e.u. was concerned member states fully support the iran deal she said you know it is a deal that is seen as the best bet if you like for security in the region and earlier in the day we heard that echoed in the words from the german foreign minister high command as he said look the point of this deal is to really to stop iran from having a nuclear weapon it's about security in the region now. made this on shared jeweled a visit to brussels he said he came in order to try and talk to you foreign ministers about the fact that the u.s. says that iran is escalating tensions in the region threatening american interests and soldiers we know already that the u.s. has sent washington and artillery to the gulf because of that the u.s. says that the iran deal is basically is a threat to global security the e.u.
9:20 pm
says it's just the opposite and that really is the crux of the divisions over this and what more greeny also said was she called on all sides to try and calm tensions she said we have to stop this military escalation and she said you know the e.u. will continue to support this for as long as iran compiles and she said for the time being iran is complying i mean e.u. desperately wants to save the nuclear deal but are there any indications about how it actually is going to achieve that given what's happening. well that's the real question margaret he certainly said that eve foreign ministers discussed the iran nuclear deal how to try and save it they know they need to come up with some sort of plan the certainly a sense of urgency particularly after the fact that last week tehran said that it was giving european powers 60 days to come up with some sort of new plan to shield the iranian economy from the impact of u.s. sanctions now the e.u. responded then very vehemently saying that they rejected all forms of ultimatum but
9:21 pm
they know the pressure is on them they've ready to launch from the e.u. payment mechanism called instax that allows for some trade between iran and european businesses but it's really only for small and medium businesses so it's not going to persuade the big multinationals to resume trade with iran because they simply will not want to have the risk of u.s. penalties now greeny said though that this inspects payment mechanism which was supposed to really be up and running in a few months could now be up and running in a few weeks over perhaps an indication that the e.u. wants to try and come up with something a bit faster but again whether it's going to be enough to save a deal that's looking increasingly fragile remains to be seen but if this deal does collapse of course it is going to be a blow for the e.u. powers of diplomacy in brussels thank you. swedish prosecutors have reopened a 9 year old investigation into a rape allegation against the wiki leaks founder julian assange will is seek his

extradition from britain swedish authorities hold of the investigation in 2017 when assaults took refuge at the ecuadorian embassy in london but with the u.s. also keen to extradite him it's going to be up to the british government to decide where he goes next paul brennan reports from london. when julian aside was dragged from the ecuadorian embassy in london last month it ended a 7 years siege of the building by british police within hours of assizes arrest u.s. prosecutors unsealed their indictment seeking his extradition for publishing hundreds of thousands of classified documents on his wiki leaks website and with our size now in custody swedish prosecutors are now resuming the rape investigation which was halted 2 years ago. vocal and of death the decision taken by marianne lee to discontinue the investigation on the 19th of may 27th payne was not motivated by difficulties related to evidence. after reviewing the policeman or

a investigation in its current state my assessment is that there is still probable cause to suspect that mr astonished me to break. wiki leaks made julian assange both famous and notorious transparency campaign a celebrated his work governments and intelligence agencies denounced him. but it was an encounter in 2010 during a lecture to a sweden which brought his downfall and allegation of rape was made against him a song has always denied the claim but he fled to britain. the lawyer for the alleged victim says she is pleased that the case is now being resumed. the prosecutor's decision is clear it signals something important and that is that if we want as a quote before the war nobody stands above the law even if your name is julian assange but his supporters say the case has faced political pressure throughout. it is always ready is really closer to distant united states to face.

letter imprisonment or death sentence or for his work. let's look before julian assange is currently in a british jail serving a 50 week sentence for skipping bail in 2012 but when the sentence is served it's not clear what his next destination will be it will be for the home secretary a government minister based here to decide whether the u.s. or the swedish extradition bids should take priority the relative seriousness of each of the allegations will be a factor and the chronology of the applications will also be considered on that basis legal commentators here in the u.k. believe currently the swedish extradition bid should probably take precedence but political factors may well influence the ultimate outcome paul brennan al-jazeera london. from london in this right now though it's back to resell it. thank you to the mystery surrounding the fate of 4 ships off the coast the u.a.e.

was viewed and shared several times before it was taken down and have similar as a senior director of the counter extremism project a nonprofit organization that combat's extremist groups by advocating for effective online regulations and joins us via skype from new york where you shake your time so much so this conference this coming this call to to do something different what is the response been from from the tech industry or from social media companies how are they responding to it. thank you so much it's wonderful to talk to you see this important event it's a really of course an initiative that demonstrate the concerns that precinct of governments have with the spread of extremist and terrorist content online unfortunately we had many of these meetings before each event take companies have managed to ramp up their defense against spreading of this content online but
9:35 pm
however every time there's another big event deals we seem to be going back to the beginning so while this is a good start and vital for literally the 1st time base also a call for governments to put in regulation the internet companies are still very hesitant to accept the concept that the tech industry like any other industry should be regulated as far as its misuse by terrorist organizations is concerned why are they has a tent do they not have the ability the cable the capability the mindset to do something about it why are they has a tent. i think the the hesitation is really a story to one the business model was seen as a positive one connecting the world enabling to overcome occasion and it does all that so take by itself like any other human endeavor is not an negative one but a very positive one but what the industry as a whole as a group did underestimate is that like any other service they could be misused for
9:36 pm
nefarious purposes therefore we need to now work towards a little bit of a culture change and of course mark socket books. at a couple of days ago seem to be signaling that finally the industry accepts the concept that the banking industry their service is likely to be misused by terrorist and criminal organizations and therefore they need compliance regulations by governments in order to justify the additional costs that it will take to increase and better the defenses there is no technological challenge my organization the counter extremism budget has a source that will lift that crawls internet service providers platforms for terrorism content in a very effective way if we can do it they certainly can are you concerned when you talk about government regulation particularly and open societies are you concerned that there is a slippery slope of government going to far in any government regulation there's
9:37 pm
always that fear of it being misused and there is a real feels it's being misused however. this is not good enough good enough an occupant to say there shouldn't be any regulations what we've seen now since 2014 it's been a problem for a long time but since 2014 with the rise of the islamic state in iraq and syria that internet and social media the have become a key tool for terrorist organizations been trying to sell for regular tour brought since that time however. we are not really strategically much better than we were in 2002 in addition we now see a different danger when as you just reported the government of sri lanka is now disabling social media services because they fear that the tech companies are not able to prevent by themselves this rate of extremist content and therefore make the situation in sri lanka even more complicated than it already is so. forcing
