feeling cool of mad thanks to the rain and it looks like that system will only slowly edge its way eastward into friday taking the wet weather with it actually easing a little bit as it does so but behind us still not warm perth only getting to 16 school force in the southeast as well with melbourne just getting to around 18 but at least it's not too windy here on like new zealand did speeding credibly windy the winds have been gusting nearly $150.00 kilometers per hour in places but they are now beginning to wind down so for many of us that should be a little bit better as we head through the next few days so lots of cloud a fair amount of rain for the south island on thursday but i think that should clear away for friday and then there should be more in the way of drawing weather up towards the northern parts of asia plenty of dry weather here the latest system is now working its way away from us in japan.

military headquarters in khartoum demonstrators have been camping there for weeks demanding a civilian government and an end to military rule a position to say they will not meet with the military council again until security forces are removed from the protest site and there's responsible for firing on demonstrates is our arrested. and martin part is a journalist who's covered sudan extensively he joins me in the studio so what do you make of this breakdown in the talks is it to do with this the violence has erupted or was it that they've come to a very difficult sticking point and i think this is the crucial stage now because they have agreed that there will be a transition period 3 years that they will share the. council which will run everything the question is now on the supreme council which is the leaven person. committee which will actually run the whole of sudan who has the balance of power
5:51 am
will it be the civilians or will it be the military and this is obviously the absolutely not of the entire issue and on this the deadlock they were supposed to resolve it within $24.00 hours will they be able to and what about the i mean the. violence tell us a bit about the people who might be responsible for the shootings and why they're significant well there were allegations that the security forces which. the vice president to miti attacked the crowd on monday there were number of deaths. and it's quite possible the same forces are involved here he is after all the kingpin in the whole of the military structure that is responsible for holding the whole of the security forces together and i dare say that he's not too happy about the idea of sharing power with the civilians if the forces of freedom and the more change are going to really take control which is what was whole process has been about then in a sense it is
5:52 am
a threat to his power base so in general terms do you think that we're not a stage where the it's a kind of a suspension and they might resume talks or do you think it's more serious than that actually things are broken down. i think it's impossible to know at this stage you know let's hope that they can commence these talks i mean the one thing that has been absolutely characteristic of the entire process it's been going on for months now what since december has been the resilience of the opposition the way they've been able to mobilize thousands of people onto the streets you know sometimes maybe as many as a 1000000 this is never been seen before in all the time i've covered sudan i've never seen demonstrations that kind of size and being able to hold out for such a length of time so ideas they are trying to mobilize again but the people against them are absolutely ruthless must have to stay there for the moment i measure to get to have a morgan live in khartoum as they were you getting any kind of spin now on this decision to suspend the talks and the any noises off from this.
5:53 am
well at the moment lauren the protesters are happy that the opposition coalition seems to be listening to them and taking their sides lots of things have been happening over the past 6 hours starting with the shooting at protesters by what protesters have identify as the rapid support forces there saying that it's happened when they when they saw forces tried to remove the barricades and they rejected bags and then the shooting started at least a dozen people have been injured around 5 o'clock and 6 o'clock local time when the shooting was going on the situation has calmed down since then the opposition coalition has been out in the streets talking to the protesters they've been also checking on barricades they told the protesters that the barricades of the sit in are the barricades that were set up the parameters that were set up on the 6th of april when the sit in started and they're saying that the protesters should stick to that certain area because if they try to go further than that then there will be repercussions and the military may use force just like they've seen not just today
5:54 am
but also on monday evening when there were at least 4 people killed and more than 200 people injured so the opposition coalition have been going around talking to protesters there's been some barricades that have been removed over the past hour they're saying that they are trying to clear the streets like the military said they should otherwise they will be using force which is what we have seen over the past few days so as much as people are happy that at the moment the opposition coalition is listening to them demanding accountability for the for the for the attacks that happen and for the loss of lives just like the protesters are they're saying that they want to see what's comes next will there be accountability and will the opposition stick to their demands of having an independent investigation open to see what happened over the past few days including today and how much do all these events set back the formation of a transitional government. well at the moment it's not clear how much said back it would have already seen the opposition coalition and the transitional military council council announcing that today's meeting which in which they were
5:55 am
supposed to be deciding the sovereign council the council that will be effectively guiding the transition period they were supposed to be agreeing on that today but that meeting has been called off due to the tensions and the violence that happened around 5 o'clock local time they have not set a new date there is no clear information as to when they will be meeting meeting again and let's not forget that there has been a lot of tension between the 2 sides they've called of talks before and then they came back again to the negotiating table to sort out things yesterday we heard from them that a breakthrough was made they have agreed on the legislative assembly structure that agreed on the executive council and the fact that the opposition coalition will be choosing their members there yet to agree on the sovereign council and its mandate the opposition coalition wanted to be a ceremonial council while the military council wanted to be the body that is guiding the transition period so they have a lot of things to talk about but it's not clear if they will be able to talk about it in the coming days especially with a lot of tension and a lot of mistrust between the opposition and the military council have
5:56 am
a moment thank you very much indeed a lot of thought is still with me as a journalist who's covered you don't extensively mention that the issue of accountability in this kind of weird period before there is a transition government where does the accountability lie or i suppose it lies somewhere between the military and the security forces the opposition that is the point it is such a fluid situation at the moment this is the crunch moment it either will succeed or it won't there will either be democracy in sudan and this will be seen as a guiding light to the whole of the frankly of the region everyone's everyone is watching on tenterhooks to see how this develops and if it if it is successful it will be really seen as something along the lines of the algerian situation where there has been a real transformation martin platt thank you very much indeed for your analysis thank you. and your state department has ordered all non-emergency government employees to leave iraq immediately and the order follows a warning by the u.s.

military of a threat from iranian linked groups but that appears to contradict the view of a senior general in iraq charles stratford reports from baghdad. in 2014 iraq's a senior shia religious leader ali al sistani issued a fatwa urging iraqis to take up arms against eisel this came up to the iraqi army fled to isolate french people in mosul without a fight but led to the establishment of the shia groups noticed a popular mobilization forces backed by iran who were highly effective in iraq in syria fighting in coordination with u.s. led coalition forces but the u.s. is putting increasing pressure and sanctions on neighboring iran and some in washington say what they call iran's proxy militias in iraq are a potential stretch take u.s. interests here including 5200 american soldiers but major general christopher geek the deputy commander of the anti eisel coalition has contradicted that.

no there's been no increased threat from iranian backed forces in iraq and syria where aware of their presence clearly. and we monitor them along with a whole range of others because that's the environment we're in after that statement the u.s. central command issued a strong rebuke comments from the operation inherent resolve deputy commander run counter to the identified credible threats available to intelligence from the u.s. and allies regarding irradiance bank forces in the region the statement said. earlier this month u.s. secretary of state michael peo came to iraq on unscheduled visits because of what he said was intelligence on specific increased threats to u.s. interests in iraq the us has since sent 2 warships and b. 52 bombers to the gulf. mobilization forces under the command of prime minister

idol of the little mahdi in his weekly press briefing he said iraq wants to play the role of a mediator between its 2 our allies and he didn't see any threats to it wore off iraq is currently stable up until this moment we have not seen any military escalation in iraq iraq has expressed this to the u.s. secretary of state iran is iraq's most important ally in the region sharing strong political economic and military and religious ties iraqi politicians and religious leaders have said they will not accept any interference in iraq's sovereignty by any country including iran. the conflicting statements about possible threats from iran has raised concerns that some parties in washington are exaggerating intelligence in order to build a case for some sort of military action against the country now the u.s. state department has ordered the immediate departure from iraq of all known

emergency government employees and many iraqis are increasingly anxious that after suffering years of conflict and political instability there may be more to come china stop at al-jazeera baghdad. joins us live now how these developments playing out in washington. lauren that criticism that are the step this isn't that charles was just talking about in his report of this intelligence that the white house has received about what it says is this very credible threat toward u.s. forces from iranian backed backed groups that is the question here and it is the secrecy of that intelligence that members of congress want to unveil in fact bob menendez the ranking democrat on the senate foreign affairs committee has asked for an immediate briefing from the white house on this intelligence his concern is and .
