no one else in the gulf of a war against iran will have terrible consequences for the saudis the other gulf countries so while the previous owner of the former saudi king wanted to cut the snake's head if you will meaning have the united states fight the iranians until the last american soldier i think this this very particular president is not exactly interested in immediate escalation but i think the saudis and others good in fact create the pretext for increased tension and perhaps escalation but one thank you. also to come here on the news hour including why turkey's main opposition candidate for the stumble man is back on the campaign trail after winning the election in march. we did back in the life of an author an activist to challenge the west's perception of africa. and his ball the team heading to hockey's playoff series for the 1st time in 15 years that's all through the.

now the u.n. general assembly is voting to pressure the u.k. into giving up control of the islands to militias the islands of the indian ocean house an important military base for the u.k. and u.s. but the un's likes to call for withdrawal within 6 months and russia's claims it was forced to give up the islands in $1065.00 in exchange for independence the u.k. has previously ignored an international court of justice ruling that the islands had been illegally taken well the take a silence known as the british indian ocean territory are also the site of a u.s. military base on diego garcia island britain took possession of the $814.00 and held on to them after the independence of militias in 19683 years before that the u.k. had secretly least one of the islands diego garcia to the u.s. to use as a military base the international court of justice issued an opinion earlier this year urging the u.k. to hand over the territory to militias which claim sovereignty over the islands of

diplomatic editor james bays joins us live now from the u.n. james so how significant is this vote and what does it mean on the ground. well it is very significant for the people of. moore particularly for the people of the check your silence now even if you're a keen observer of international affairs you may not be aware of where that is i think some in the u.k. and some in russia snow and that's because there's no permanent population there but that's the point they were removed from the islands in the late 1960 s. just before malicious was given its independence by the u.k. the u.k. kept these islands and did a secret deal at the time with the us to make the biggest of the islands a military base a u.k. u.s. military base where u.s. bombers are now based which was used for rendition flights during the so-called global war on terror that we've heard moments ago in the general assembly from the

it going to lose very badly in this vote the interesting thing to be watching will be the other european nations do any of them abstain robin voting against the u.k. certainly i spoke of. on the way into the meeting to the swedish ambassador orlowski asked him how he'd be voting and he said we'll be voting in favor of international law and he went on to explain to me that means i'll be voting against the u.k. james just briefly what are the legal and moral implications here and is the un vote non-binding. well the legal or moral implications are different i think the moral case the world most of the world apart from the u.k. and the usa is very very plain the legal position it's gone through the court an advisory opinion and certainly marie the african union others saying that that means the u.k. needs to do a deal with the us and get out of there straight away the u.k. those say that this is a non-binding advisory ruling of the international court of justice which is the

but what some say is that if you want to be considered as an honest broker a mediator as the french president does then it's of course very problematic if you are perceived to be supporting one side to the detriment of the other. british prime minister says a 2nd reading of her briggs's bill will help parliament come to a decision on the customs union and whether to hold a 2nd referendum the opposition labor party says may should not bother putting it to a 4th vote in parliament because it won't get the prime minister is also coming under pressure from right wing m.p.'s in their own party to step down may has told politicians they have one last chance to deliver on briggs that. i've set out the 10 points about the new deal there is an issue about customs there is a difference of opinion in this house on the future customs arrangement with the european union that's why it's important that this house actually comes to a decision on that issue this 2nd referendum the 2nd reading of the

there in london jenna thank you. it was once an industrial giant in the u.k. and now in the latest sign of the growing uncertainty in the wake of bragg's it but it still has collapsed putting thousands of jobs at risk loans lee has more from london. exactly a year ago british steel produced this corporate film glamorizing what goes on inside it's plants in sky. high quality tailored manufacturing the sort of thing the u.k. used to be feigned for. all over the world. one year on the accountants of moved in british steel has collapsed putting some $25000.00 jobs in direct jeopardy the government it seems was unwilling to provide just $30000000.00 pounds or $40000000.00 to keep it afloat the opposition cannot believe it also mr speaker i want to express on behalf of the labor party might outrage that the government has again failed our steel industry putting $5000.00 jobs at risk in british steel

20000 more in supply chain this government has failed those people the government will work closely with the official receiver and prospective new owners to achieve the best possible outcome for these sites the government is providing an indemnity to the official receiver who is now responsible for the operations and we will take every possible step to ensure that these vital operations can continue the irony isn't lost on anyone that the news of the demise of british steel comes one day before european elections in which the conservative party is expected to receive a thrashing and the story of british steel plays into a much wider debate about brics it and the future of british manufacturing. it has been blamed in parts for the demise of british steel just like honda decision to close its car factory in the west of england it's widely thought the so-called hard bricks it would lead to the closure of nisanit in northeastern england as well to many voters the points of the exercise was to get politicians to pay more attention

to their communities it's not happening the reality is and it's an uncomfortable truth is that we wouldn't be having these difficulties in the way in which they're presenting themselves this week if it wasn't for the decision to leave the european union perhaps the most startling statistic around british steel is that over the last 2 years alone china produced more steel than the u.k. has done since the industrial revolution in the 19th century maybe politicians think it isn't worth trying anymore but they don't have any other alternatives for people in skunk. it's difficult to explain a situation where the government can find $5000000000.00 to renovate the parliament building and another $5000000000.00 to protect the country against the worst of a no deal brecht's it and yet cannot find the money to protect the u.k.'s steel industry had the been explaining its votes as is anybody's guess lawrence lee al jazeera in london time for a short break here not to say that when we come back the fate of the so-called

liquidation. politicians in the us are debating a bill which could provide citizenship for more than 2000000 so-called dreamers who were illegally brought into the country as minors the house judiciary committee are voting on the legislation meant to protect undocumented children who've been living in the u.s. for years president trump has tried to cancel the program shearling the dreamers from deportation these attempts have been shot down by the courts mean all questions are being asked about the safety of new young light winds 5 young people have died in tension centers along the southern border. in the last 6 months the latest is a 16 year old from guatemala who was found dead on monday after a week in detention that's when legal and he's deputy director at the american civil liberties union the a.c.l.u. he joins us live from new york lisa 5 children now died in u.s. immigration detention how worried are you about why these deaths are happening and who's being held accountable for them we are very concerned we've always been
12:20 am
very concerned about what happens in detention centers we believe that immigrants are being detained far too often when it's unnecessary and with children it's that much worse children should not be detained at all because of the psychological damage but now we're seeing actual deaths in great numbers and so we are extremely concerned and are hoping that both congress and others in advocates are going to try and hold people accountable and get to the bottom of what's going on how much do these deaths put the spotlight back on the why the issue of separating immigrant families and why is this still happening and what are the wider implications of breaking up immigrant families. so i think it's important for people to understand that many of the children in these detention centers are genuinely unaccompanied or not separated so that the question of conditions in detention centers goes beyond just the separation of families but the separation of
12:21 am
families is absolutely critical for people to understand that it's still going on still going on we had a court order in june for the government to stop the separations we now know that there have been at least $600.00 separations since the court order but as importantly the government reported about $3000.00 separations we thought that was the end of it it now turns out that there may be thousands more separations that occurred in the very beginning of the trump administration we are going to be the a.c.l.u. and our partners are going to be looking for those families we are trying to get information from the government but it took a court order to tell the government to tell us about those early separations beginning in july of 2017 so we're both looking for families who are separated all the way back to the beginning of the trump administration and we're hearing now about hundreds and hundreds of new separations so i think what we need is public outcry like we had last summer to stop this again we will also be in court the
12:22 am
a.c.l.u. will be in court to try and get additional court orders just a final thought from in the last week president trump unveiled his plans for a merit based system to legal immigration what impact will trump's plans have them separated families children in detention annals of the deferred action the childhood arrivals the so-called dream as. right what we're you know right now it's not a legislative proposal we've seen no real movement from the administration on a number of issues separated families as a problem detention daca all those issues what the administration is focused on solely is trying to stop people from having a meaningful opportunity to apply for asylum at the southern border and that's a problem in this country with our values and our laws we cannot stop people from from having a meaningful up to apply for asylum it doesn't mean everyone's going to get asylum
12:23 am
but there has to be a process right now is central americans who need that process all americans should remember that it's not always been central americans who needed help under the asylum laws a lot of people in this country been for them from those the solemn laws and we should keep those asylum laws intact from you thank you very much indeed for talking to al jazeera not to bomb explosions have killed at least 9 people in the somali capital mogadishu in one attack a car bomb talk that a convoy of politicians heading towards the presidential palace a number of a member of parliament was among those killed the group says it was behind the attack. that was like a huge explosion happened that distant point near death and we have lost a young child and i thought is the soldiers and civilians and many more injured the blast destroyed our homes and we don't have much to rebuild neither. saudi arabia and the united arab emirates due to attend a conference in bahrain next month as part of u.s.

12:55 am
a decision on that issue it will also enable the house to come to a decision on a 2nd referendum which i continue to believe would not be the right route for this country to go we should deliver on the 1st referendum suggesting anything about a 2nd lawrence lee joins us live now from london lawrence the crisis around i'm am brigs it is deepening it seems what's been happening. well you know how they say that the definition of insanity is to try to repeat the same thing over and over again and get a different outcome and that's what series a maze many opponents are now accusing her of repeatedly to bring the same deal on leaving the european union back to parliaments it's lost the vote 3 times already no changes from the to speak of this time except that in gaijin it was a promise of a 2nd referendum if m.p.'s want that and that's proof sufficiently toxic now among the conservative party that is under direct attack from her own rank and file
12:56 am
m.p.'s and cabinet ministers it's not if she's a dead woman walking politically it's not going to be if but when and it could be 2 nights that she has to resign the there's a question about if it doesn't happen either this that this week is the european elections tomorrow the idea of a prime minister resigning the day before the elections is completely unheard of but that bad things are if it's not tonight then it would have to be friday because it can be next week since donald trump's in london with 3 with the bill as the prime minister restored or standing in for a whole lot of 2nd world war commemorations and you know in there's not they're not prepared to let it drift on any longer and they're going in to see her telling her she's got to go and we're waiting for downing street to actually confirm that she's going to make some sort of statement later on which may or may not happen but if it's not think it'll be by the end of this week and frankly that has to happen because this half in half out bracks it isn't working opinions on both sides of harden's very very much and if the u.k.

is going to get itself out there needs to be a change of leadership in governments and a different direction i that's i have absolutely no deal bracks because the u.k. completely which to a lot of them wants or a 2nd referendum or a general election and some reason may through just run prince stubbornness won't let any of those things happen and she just got in the way frankly you know lawrence i mean uncertainty of a briggs is being blamed for another major industrial setback today what more can you tell us. yeah i mean if you live in the northern english town of skull and thought where in the 907 seas a full 3rd of a 1000000 people work for british steel comfort was actually built to house the workers at the factory that's big british steel was now only 5000 people work there because industry shrunk so much if you live in scandal you might care about stories and maybe a car lot more about the fact that the receivers have been called in because the british government simply decides it doesn't want to bankroll british steel anymore when it's when it's not making enough money and you know it all collapses in so all
12:58 am
the things about brick sets in strategy and the future of british manufacturing many many big questions about what's brett's it means to britain's industrial base . exactly a year ago british steel produced this corporate film glamorizing what goes on inside its plants in scum. high quality tailored manufacturing the sort of thing the u.k. used to be feigned for all over the world. one year on the accountants of moved in british steel has collapsed putting some $25000.00 jobs in direct jeopardy the government it seems was unwilling to provide just $30000000.00 pounds or $40000000.00 to keep it afloat the opposition cannot believe it but also mr speaker i want to express on behalf of the labor party my outrage that the government has again failed our steel industry putting 5000 jobs at risk in british steel 20000

more in supply chain this government has failed those people we will be working with the company and others and the official receiver in the days and weeks ahead to ensure that we can pursue every step to secure the future of the operations at scunthorpe skinning grove and on to the side the irony isn't lost on anyone that the news of the demise of british steel comes one day before european elections in which the conservative party is expected to risk. threshing and the story of british steel plays into a much wider debate about brics it and the future of british manufacturing. has been blamed in parts for the demise of british steel just like hundreds decision to close its car factory in the west of england it's widely thought the so-called hard bricks it would lead to the closure of nissan in northeastern england as well to many voters the points of the exercise was to get politicians to pay more attention to their communities it's not happening the reality is and it's an uncomfortable
1:00 am
truth is that we wouldn't be having these difficulties in the way in which they're presenting themselves this week if it wasn't for the decision to leave the european union perhaps the most startling statistic around british steel is that over the last 2 years alone china produced more steel than the u.k. has done since the industrial revolution in the 19th century maybe politicians think it isn't worth trying anymore but they don't have any other alternatives for people in scum fulp it's difficult to explain a situation where the government can find $5000000000.00 to renovate the parliament building and another $5000000000.00 to protect the country against the worst of a no deal brecht's it and yet cannot find the money to protect the u.k.'s steel industry had the been expanding its voters.
