appeal from one of the un's top humanitarian officials can't to this council take any concrete action when attacks on schools and hospitals have become a war tactic that annoy longer sparks outrage is there nothing to be said or done when indiscriminate barrel bombs are dropped in civilian areas a clear breach of international humanitarian law and of council resolution 2139 millions of bettered and beleaguered children women and men cannot wait for another geneva round to succeed. 22 health facilities have been targeted the u.s. representative at the meeting says there needs to be accountability france make it

clear they believe that this could be war crimes that are being carried out by the russians and the syrians very much stuck to their position that they've had since the beginning of this offensive the russian seat was held by the deputy foreign minister and he said simply that they were targeting what they describe as terrorists he says 99 percent of the deescalation zone is currently controlled by armed groups that he calls terrorists of course you have to look at what the law is on this international humanitarian law and that's quite clear it says even if you're fighting groups that you consider to be terrorists you've got to be proportionate in the way you do things and remember there are some 3000000 civilians living in it live men women and children so on the international humanitarian law bombing areas where there are civilians would seem to be something that is clearly not allowed our diplomatic editor james bay is reporting live from

the u.n. james many thanks. protests leaders in sudan are increasing the pressure on the transitional military council to hand over power to a civilian one of ministration a 2 day strike is on the way with workers nationwide walking off the job protesters are hoping the strike will force military leaders into a new round of negotiations let's go live now to the sudanese capital khartoum just there was a man caught as the iran the deputy head of the transitional military council is speaking right now what's he been saying. yes that's absolutely right he's known locally as a miti he was addressing a did a full fellow officers and what he said was quite key actually he began his statement by saying that this the army was part of the revolution that it was part of the protest movement and that without the army the sudanese leader omar al
9:09 pm
bashir it would still be in power he also said that if the protesters went back to their old slogans and he used old slogans that may well be the possibility of a deal to live it very quickly is still speaking at the moment so we're waiting to see whether he calls full the sudanese people to go back to work however we haven't heard from the sudanese professionals association they're the ones that have been leading the charge when it comes to organizing the protest on behalf of the opposition coalition they're likely to issue a statement in response to have bts statement and it's likely to be very strong because they feel that this strike action is working and that the sudanese people have had enough of this negotiation that's going on between the opposition coalition and the army itself and they say that the army simply isn't negotiating in good faith in rome what impact on daily life is this strike having how well
9:10 pm
supported is it. well here in khartoum certainly it's almost citywide i was out during the day taking a look at the streets every few blocks or so there were protesters out in the street take a look this is supposed to be one of the busiest orifice in cartoon it's actually completely empty old the shops the shots this is the holy month of ramadan so everything does open in the evening in the streets are normally very busy but like i say they have been very busy because of the strike so let's take a look now at exactly how the day has gone. on any other day this would be the main transport hub for the whole of holter but the central bus station is shot and the general strike is holding disruption to the capital's airport would strike is displaying signs saying we will build our country shops and businesses are closed citywide and protesters are out in the streets a handful of shops and government offices did open but the strike is widespread
9:11 pm
enough for the organizers to deem it a success the plan today walkout was organized by the sudanese professionals association speaking on monday night before the strike started organizers said they were forced into taking action because the transitional military council are not negotiating in good faith. the sole guarantor of the revolution are the sudanese people and the law and order in what we agree upon as a constitutional declaration or otherwise this is the guarantor of the revolution not a military rifle for the workers who have walked out they hope that the military leaders who replaced ousted president omar al bashir will listen to their demands for a civilian like government. 2 but for more. longer she was a little shocked at the base of the transitional military council has criticised the strike saying it won't hand over power to an unstable civilian government it's
9:12 pm
also said that the army is the most popular institution in the country according to these people that's not true however the transitional military council will be very concerned that the strike is holding and it's courtroom why it's the opposition coalition will be hoping that the strike gives them negotiating power and that the transitional military council will have to listen and we have been told if they don't opposition leaders say they will take further action such as more strikes for now the padlocks remain firmly closed as do the talks between the 2 parties. which is there a lot. here with the news from al jazeera still to come on the program u.s. drug companies in the crosshairs as a court case seeks to hold them to account for their role in the crisis. for violence in brazil's prisons just 24 hours after 15 inmates were killed in a riot at a facility in the. and in sports more bad news for the name oz he loses the

companies settle out of course. it's a drug crisis of epic proportions that's what i wouldn't die for it according to the center for disease control in 2017 close 250000 people died from overdosing on drugs more than a 3rd of those deaths were caused by prescription opioids given to patients for pain faced with a growing crisis oklahoma's attorney general decided to take action to big drug companies purdue pharma and tiva pharmaceuticals have already settled before being taken to court that leaves johnson and johnson who lawyers say are an opioid kingpin these companies we believe. made no effort. when this process began 20 years ago to ensure that they were providing in a clear and informed way what the downside was oklahoma's case is just the 1st of almost 2000 lawsuits brought by states local municipalities and native american

tribes this then is an important test case for the entire nation if lawyers here can prove a multi-billion dollar company like johnson and johnson played a role in the opioid crisis the ramifications could be huge ultimately campaigners say it will save lives and could be the beginning of tackling a crisis has claimed so many legal experts say whatever happens drug manufacturer is watching closely and think it's going to have a really good benefit for the public as a whole in terms of the safety and the marketing of drops in april president trump valid to tackle the opioid crisis by providing more treatment and oversight of big pharmaceutical companies we will end this terrible menace we will smash the grip of addiction we will make our cities safe our communities strong and our future brighter than ever before as one united nations we will work we

said they were greedy but it is a difficult case for them to prove johnson and johnson's lawyers will be taking to the stand this afternoon this is a judge only trial that's actually being streamed live on you tube which is a bit of an unusual move but one that goes to the heart of how important this is to a place like oklahoma 800 people died here last year from overdoses and many people have been coming in just to watch the trial because they've been directly affected by an opiate crisis that's plagued this nation for 20 years you've been speaking to a mother who lost her son to or period addiction what's her reaction to this. well this is emily walden women are outside the court she's not taking part in the trial but has son was 21 years old when he died from opiate addiction in 2012 he starts it off with a back injury i wonder prescriptions run out he found the drug illegally something is quite easy to do so she has no doubts about it that these companies need to pay for what they've done $1.00 estimation says that it will cost the state of oklahoma

9:32 pm
so i think this trial in oklahoma as well as the lawsuits that are happening around the country are tremendously important here i think they're important for a number of reasons one i think that drug manufacturers and distributors need to be held accountable in a very transparent way for all of the pain and death that they presumably have caused as a result as a result of their manufacturing and distribution process sees you know i think that it's really important that we see what these companies did and in no exactly the practices that may have led to the most significant public health crises that we've probably had in the united states history so and i think that they owe it to the parents of kids who have died not only that they are held accountable but also that they pay for treatment and prevention services i think that's really an
9:33 pm
important part to these lawsuits is the now of a mental building. against. these manufacturers at the state and federal level. i'm sorry can you repeat the question is is there a momentum building legally speaking against these manufacturers these drug manufacturers at the state and federal level. there is a significant momentum building and i think just about there are hundreds if not thousands of lawsuits that are making their way through the state and federal court systems now to hold manufacturers and distributors distributors accountable for their behavior and i think that's really an important and growing part of the issue here i think that you know having spent the bulk of my time at both state and
9:34 pm
federal government levels that government has a responsibility but certainly the businesses that may have contributed to this epidemic and quite honestly made hundreds of billions of dollars off of these drugs be held both financially and legally responsible for the behavior that they that may have led to their contribution to this epidemic what do you think we might learn from this trial to what extent is a pandora's box about to be opened in oklahoma. well i think it's really one of the important reasons that these cases go to trial in the sense that through the discovery process and through the transparent discovery of documents and practices that the public and parents will have will see i think on a 1st hand basis what these manufacturers and distributors did so i think that
9:35 pm
there is a transparency to these lawsuits that settlements quite honestly don't often allow for that sort of public disclosure in terms of the practices of these businesses michael really gets to you many thanks indeed for being with us michael to charlie that. white house advisor jarrett is in morocco drumming up support for the american plan and the future of palestine and israel u.s. envoy is due in jordan and israel later this week donald trump's son in law is to present the economic part of the plan of a conference in bahrain next month the palestinians are rejecting the proposals of urging an arab boy course of the conference mike hanna reports now from washington the white house has confirmed that jared cushion is traveling to morocco then on to jordan then a west jerusalem before going on to join president trump on his state visit to the united kingdom now he's accompanied by special representative jason greenblatt and
9:36 pm
the u.s. iran representative brian hook it would appear that this trip is connected to the conference for bahrain next month at which the jared cushion is says that economic aspects of his settlement proposal for israel palestine are to be discussed he's insisted that the economic aspect of this deal needs to be settled before the political aspects can be addressed now significant believe the king of jordan king abdullah has not indicated whether he'll be attending that conference in bahrain equally morocco has not made clear whether it will be attending the palestinian leaders have made very clear they will not be attending that conference insisting that they no longer see the u.s. as an honest break in the ongoing conflict between israel and palestine so very important for jared to convince king abdullah to convince morocco to take part
9:37 pm
in that conference otherwise it could well lose whatever credibility it may have. iran says no prospects of talks with the united states unless donald trump commits to the 2015 nuclear agreement that he withdrew from the reports from tehran. in his 1st media briefing as iran's new foreign ministry spokesman abbas moussavi wasted no time getting to the point if the united states wants talks with iran the starting point is returning to the 2015 nuclear deal. now we won't have any negotiation with the united states and on line has always been respect for international agreements to restate could return there with. and based on delusion so we have no prospect for negotiation and invades for developments. as to offers by 3rd parties while iran's leaders are open to hearing from concerned friends of he says mediation isn't necessary yet stubbornly sticking to his guns
9:38 pm
seems to have worked in the iranian government's favor the u.s. has rolled back hawkish language and even with the american military buildup still in the region a war seems much less imminent iranians often say they don't care about iran's strategic victories or even standing up to america they care about things like the price of diapers for their children the value of their real currency fluctuating from one second to the next and generally being unable to afford a happy life. in my opinion everything should be solved through negotiations but out of politics should be separate from social issues because innocent people are being grouped into political games if iran and america. get better during a visit to japan this week the u.s. president struck an optimistic note i do believe that iran would like to talk and if they'd like to talk we'd like to talk also we'll see what happens but the

iranian government says the u.s. pullout from the 2050 nuclear deal has shown negotiate. with americans is a fool's errand and as long as meaningful reduction of sanctions remains unlikely talking is a waste of time trudy islamiya the iran is not interested in empty rhetoric and pays more attention to behaviors and will decide and act up and. iran seems to be meeting american sanctions and military threats with more soft power doubling down on a policy of strong links with other countries to build a chain of consensus and condemn america's role in the middle east to that end the new face of the foreign ministry often iran's loudest voice on the world stage made it clear iran remains wide open to diplomacy with everyone except the united states zain but to her on the family of al jazeera journalists are saying and says a new investigation against him has been opened days after an egyptian court

ordered his release to say it's been held for more than $880.00 days now without chanche trial or conviction after he was arrested in egypt while on a family holiday scott griffen is the deputy director of the international press institute he says that egypt's willingness to ignore a court order has confirmed his worst fears. we had hoped that at the very least he would be released under some kind of conditions you know that he would have to report to pretty soon a in the evening for example which is obviously not ideal but at least he would be able to be free and spend time with this family so we're very concerned that this latest move is a sign that egypt is not going to let go of much to say that easily i think we need a lot more pressure from each of us allies in the 1st place we need countries that are western powers that are allied that see a friendly face in the courage of the government to stand up for the ballot was that they claim to protect if you look to the u.k. for example which this announced
