are internally distrait displaced persons i.d.p.'s what are stateless people thank you for that scott and 1st of all thank you for having me on it's a great question even though i work on statelessness full time i'm very aware that most people have never heard of statelessness it's a bit counterintuitive most people have a nationality everybody they know has a nationality so statelessness is a bit of a mystery but it is the situation of people who have no nationality no government on the planet recognizes them as its citizens it's different from the refugee age issue because stateless people haven't crossed an international border typically there can be exceptions but most stateless people live and die in the country they were born and without ever having a nationality it when you look at this region in particular it sounds as though we have one of the worst cases of statelessness people and that are the range of when you have this you know this is

a workshop going on here in the region this is going to be i guess what's discussed here brought to geneva in october when you look at what's being done here now you've got this really big problem just next door what's being done what needs to be done to correct that. that example but also broadly here in asia well the good thing about working on statelessness and it's one of the inspiring things is it's fully solvable the solutions are at hand all governments need to is the political will to adopt best practices in their nationality laws so for example in the case of the room. that there is explicit discrimination and myanmar's nationality law jamar is by no means alone however some 20 governments on the planet a little bit more have some form of discrimination whether based on religion ethnicity or race and their nationality law many more governments have gender discrimination in the nationality law they don't let women confer nationality on their children on an equal basis as men so what we're basically doing here is we're

advocating with these governments for the adoption of best practices in their nationality laws the high level segment that you mentioned that will be held in geneva in october is an opportunity for the governments that have made positive reforms and there are many to take credit for those to shine the spotlight on the good practices it's a little bit glass half full glass half empty we have a lot more to do but we've seen tremendous strides in the last 5 years when it comes to the identification of state with people protection of stateless people grant of nationality law reforms and accession to the statelessness conventions we've seen 20 new accessions to the state with most conventions in just the last 4 and a half years so i guess the biggest challenge is getting these nations to it here to the laws that really are already in place and obviously there are some great issues with that so we should also this meeting here these best practices and discussions will be taken again to the bigger state was this meeting in geneva in october. or live for us in bangkok scott thank you so had on al-jazeera toys
