5:06 am

optically with their new veterans coming into these programs is that it is a program so you don't run shelters you know this isn't a mission. it's a man supportive housing program. everybody takes turns doing chores and somebody has been living on the street for 15 years cleaning the kitchen might be totally alien experience for them but it's something that they all have to do make it their own or to teach that. i don't know i don't know how to say it but there's just i love this place you know how i wish everybody could experience this.
5:11 am
this is my car again my wife lived in this car. it's not a good place to live but i guess it beats the street you know let me show you where i was living. it was basically. sit like this and put the seat. where is it right here all the way back and this is this is the position we slept in and i would have sleeping bag pulled up over me and my pillow behind my head but as you could see i'm not burkle or horizontal. so i wasn't i mean you try to turn over and you just get more uncomfortable and that's where they all called him and you know you drink enough you just pass them out a way to do that and you wake up in the morning so or you know and you do you start
5:12 am
your day all over again doing the same thing trinket so you wouldn't have to feel anything when you when you try had to crawl back in this thing and sleep in it the end i think happened in the mcdonald's parking lot and i stopped getting i try to use more drugs and they just wouldn't work and it's like likes something outside of my so said to not. and i went to a veterans resource center and things have just been going good sense and you know i completed i did everything i needed to do. to do the right thing you know to get help. and now this car is just a reminder of what i'm done with. today like this so good. i'm going to hang on to what i get. a leg and go.
5:13 am
to dinner pretty. good it will. let me go to school each. day he's going. to be there. but when it's so tough for. me to get big fish i'll. just. have you seen circumstances where you can say i've seen circumstances in which the client didn't want to be saved. somebody will decide. her winner or i'll call was much more important at that moment and then we just hope that we left enough of an impression that at some point they'll be ready for hoping the come back we can. never turn our back on a veteran and we're not going to do it today hopefully someday they'll all come
5:14 am
back. i have just had i am a veteran of 2 branches i did 6 years active duty many is a separate mission from there i went into the naval reserves. completed i went into the army national guard which i'm still hurt currently serving in. where that total of 14 years now for the car they were to play with just sticks i have periods i swear i have a substance abuse problem that i have about all that and get over it which was hard but i've done it now and again and this last time was a lot harder but at least i was able to. bounce back from it all. and since then have been trying to find income to help kind of move forward to.
5:15 am
read and here we have to cross over into it a creek area. and give you a heads up when. you're holding is an compassed way of doing nothing but surviving that foothold to go around to look for housing or to look for jobs it becomes much harder because you're more focused on where am i going to get my next meal. or how am i going to get to these free services or how my going to do these 2 things. and then to think about where is our next hour. can i do anything you look colas and your clothes are all dirty himself like that you can't better even if you want to change. a lot of great stuff that's like agent reagan.

given. moment yesterday when i left the story completely had no idea who it was didn't know where my car was had a full blown panic attack just going through those where in one minute i'm in reality the next minute i'm not quite painful. in this process is you know brought up all the stuff i've stuff for 20 years. i don't buy it that's my good friend jenny hi how do you do. dave dave this is jay jay mohr nice to meet you. i went into the coast guard to go help others when i was 17 and a month before i went to maps they weighed me and told me i was 5 pounds overweight
5:32 am
i was 170 lb body builder with 6 percent body fat so i quit eating in basic training so through my time in. my anorexia took over my life at that point i was 112 pounds. so i finally was able to get into rehab in rehab my 1st week i was then cornered several times by a counselor and the last time he raped me so my history in the military was difficult one for something i wanted to do something i so wanted to do i had to get out to save my life women with m.s.t. military sexual trauma if any female says i've been raped or i've been sexually assaulted or i have been brutally badgered they had nothing happens it's sort of falls on deaf ears and you get kicked out and you get nothing and it happens time
5:33 am
and time again. i also myself was raped 3 times different times in the military and it definitely is it's horrible and it happens to women quite often very much often that was 20 years ago when i finally broke this last may. i had been stockpiling pills and i'd already been drinking a lot and taken a lot is innings through the day. so it took about 80 norco's percocet xanax prepared all and then some into an argument like you shouldn't drink of whiskey. and i was ready and i said i'm going to bed. i thought i would be done i looked it up on the internet that combination should kill anybody. my next thought. was my friend jenny.
5:34 am
shaking me awake screaming at me. saying if you're dead i'm going to kill you bitch today. not so much i was so mad to be alive and the only thought i could think of was i can't believe i'm here i can't believe i'm still here. i convinced her i was just sick she went to go get another friend to help watch me overnight while they were gone i took a half a bottle of tylenol pm. the next day. when i woke up again i was like you've got to be kidding me but by that. that it now you know i'm really glad of suicide i'm. well you know you're inspiring i'll say that my goodness to 2 of you

5:37 am
a human existence we have tough times we have good times that's the whole balance of why we're here and that has really helped me because i'm doing good today but you never know i get triggered things happen but if i can. 33 will walk down here or remember this in my mind i know it. they say that. a veteran commits suicide every 61 minutes here in the united states and unfortunately i think the number is so off the drinking the drugging the overdosing the risky behavior. i'm sure that sure that number number is at least double that in terms of. all these other causes. reverted it least in the last month 24 suicide sued the training that and can
5:38 am
mandate my case managers get and then. you know we've probably lost 3 in the last 2 months and who knows how many more that we've engaged with that we just haven't heard of at this juncture you know it's. it's horrible. when. we have a lot of successes to clients that come into the program they work really hard. and they leave us. i don't want to say normal but they leave us you know better productive members of the community they are happy they're healthy yeah the 1st week go out to get by a truck a brick you believe every do. you start it up. you know fill

5:40 am
your life back in your. face feel out of and you're like. get out if you've ever had to do anything let you off but we were. like oh my god it's ok i will. i think i have there's somebody that has become a lot closer to me if i see her every day and i talk to her every day. i've actually got might even be my unemployment is out so i've been getting out which helps a lot. gives more sense of freedom to be able to do a lot more stuff and catch up and repay people back as well. and that money that she did receive she was able to take care of her debt with her storage facility she actually has to go in choice and space there's always room for dinner.
5:41 am

how the cold has crept north through a good part of australia you can't really tell when this is mr lee but you watch the temperature max in alice springs down the queens and coast would suggest showers nothing that's going to be reflected in the forecast so the $22.00 in times though not very warm while the on that is same is for the south in brisbane and we're coldest 2 as have been the case for a couple of days in victoria and dancer tasmania west to adelaide as well that person is warmish but alice springs as you can see 16 degrees and that's about 17 the day off to townsville is coolest so how often do you see the twenty's in tropical queens and not very often the same scenario is happening in new zealand
5:47 am
had a vast amount of rain and snow for and you can see the circulation here but that circulation as it brought snow course you could think is probably quite cold it is the forecast reflects that wellington's high in the 12 on saturday or clint only 13 and you've got precious little sight of the sun a lot more rain still to come some snow of course at height and it's even colder on sunday the sun might be rather more dominant but your highest temperature washington is plus 9 a bit of heights one is or was it's colder still. on counting the cost from credit fueled currency crisis how can you fix turkey's economy. made in america how much would consumers. pay for u.s. made goods and the debt crisis is making it harder for mozambique to invest for the future. counting the cost.

0. hello i'm maryanne demasi this is the news hour live from london coming up in the next 60 minutes mexico's president sends his foreign minister to washington after donald trump escalates his threat of tariffs on mexican goods. we've been pretty clear about trade with iran that are sanctioned in their terms that are not. the
5:49 am
u.s. 100 pm need is against bypassing it sanctions to continue trading with iran. media freedom under threat in sudan activists warn it could signal a new crackdown on dissent. on the an a m e t e y t u r. and make no mistake it was one for the record books 8 children were crowned the winners of the u.s. national spelling bee. and then for the west indies began their cricket world cup campaign with an emphatic a victory chris gayle star the as they crossed party style by 7 wickets in nottingham. ockham's the program our top story mexico's foreign minister has traveled to washington for talks after the us president threatened to impose new tower ifs on
5:50 am
mexican imports donald trump said he would increase tariffs by up to 25 percent unless mexican authorities do more to start crossing america's southern border stocks and wall street fell after that announcement by trump mexico's president says the people of mexico don't deserve to be treated that way. sit by. i believe this measure will be further analyzed by the united states government i believe that president trump will understand that this is not the way to solve things i think that there will be a correction if not right away at some point because these measures are neither in the interest of mexicans nor united states citizen. let's get some reaction out of washington where alan fischer joins us and so can we what can we expect to a much from these talks and from this visit by the mexican foreign minister. well the difficulty is on one side you've got donald trump saying i'm bringing in
5:51 am
these tad of people that the white house are saying well we certainly got mexico's attention and we of others like republican politicians the u.s. chamber of commerce saying this is a terribly bad idea is a bit like the old psychological tests they give you when there are lots of dollars depending on who you are and what your view is you see things differently and that's where we are at the moment no donald trump says he will bring these in in a week and make score obviously hoping that they will be able to convince him that that is not a good idea and pointing out again and people have done this many times of donald trump when it comes to tad of it is not mexico's government that pays tad if it is american consumers and american companies and that makes things much more expensive for people here in the united states the long term he's seeing companies may well then be forced to leave mexico and come to the united states if they want to have
5:52 am
access to the united states market but that is a long term thing so the markets have reacted as you would expect by being done with the end of business on friday and these talks over the weekend might well produce something the other thing you've got to remember is we're coming in the process where the white house wants congress to approve the united states mexico canada agreement that would replace the north american free trade agreement nafta which donald trump said had to be done this puts all of that up in the year because mexico don't want to be seen to be giving into believing from the american government and in particular from donald trump's white house. that's right and of course the timing is remarkable just when they were already concerns about an ex escalating trade war with the chinese now you have markets reacting as you say u.s. companies and consumer as very concerned about the impact of these tariffs can we be sure that we'll pursue this course of action allan what might happen in the
5:53 am
coming weeks is he likely to stick to his position. i think it's in if you start talking about donald trump and coming weeks you're already making that a very wide window i would bring that down to the next 4872 hours mexico has made it clear look what can we do to stop the migrants coming through oh you've got to stay within the rule of law we've got to respect human rights and people have the right to apply for asylum now the united states might not like that but then mexico turns the question on them and says quite simply what have you done to stop this coming through and there are those who would say if you damage mexico's economy that doesn't make people want to stay in mexico that makes people want to go to or i don't know move to the united states so this is a very difficult position but you can tell when you get reaction from chuck grassley who in the past has supported donald trump who is
5:54 am
a republican senator saying this is a bad idea the u.s. chamber of commerce traditionally a conservative organization saying there are no looking to see if there is anything they can do legally to stop donald trump doing this and important groups who would normally support a republican president and the idea of free trade saying this is a terribly bad idea so it seems that the white house decided that they were making this announcement through donald trump's tweet late on thursday because they were what it was going to leak that meant there was no rule there was no briefing there was no speaking to people who could help influence this instead what you have is many many on the republican side being very very angry at a republican president thank you very much for now allan fish in washington. meanwhile chinese tarps on $60000000000.00 worth of u.s. goods have taken effect a trade dispute is taking a toll on america's midwest many farmers
5:55 am
a struggling but for now president still support from that region as john hendren reports from colfax illinois. as the u.s. administration plans ahead in its trade war with china american farmers say they're getting crushed between the world's 2 largest economies we grew a record soybean crop record corn crop and then you take the fact that our largest buyer just disappeared you know we created a huge ending stockpile that is it's going to take years to eat through it not to mention we tripled what we normally carry china's retaliatory tariffs on corn soybeans import have hit their mark american farmers deep in trim country across the midwest are suffering this is private and one of the toughest years that i've experienced in my 40 plus years of farming are bankers i'm starting to get nervous next year is going to be. a tough time as some farmers are not going to get their
5:56 am
