which is that maybe maybe people are changing their minds because it is such a complete mess that perhaps you know that there's some buyer's remorse in there somewhere and people maybe don't want to leave as much as it did but at the same time there's another reading which the labor party's busy trumpeting this morning which is the people over the concerns them bricks it's in the in the woman lisa folds who won the election has been going around saying she didn't campaign around directed at all she come by and around schools and hospitals austerity and all sorts of things that lead parties as people are much more interested in them bricks and so that's another reading of it as well but even though you know that the party is astonishing and successful and relegate the conservatives to 3rd which is disastrous for them it is difficult not to see this as something of a failure for the bricks of policy and that they also in some level exposed is easy for a protest vote in the european elections but they don't have any policies as all other than leaving the european you know they have no manifesto and when it comes to
6:01 pm
things like national votes that's really very important what does this mean for the conservative party that is it from. well that's where it is really important that the conservative policy is now in an absolute hole. lost as goes but he later she says she going to stay on until a new leader is found but that new leader has got an absolutely disastrous choice to make now because if they try to pursue the sort of hard bricks it's that the bricks it policy wants. in order to avoid annihilation of the hands of the brics it policy then they will immediately face a votes of confidence here which they will very likely lose which would trigger a general election which based on the results last night simply sobre would probably lead to the labor policy winning the national election so if it comes to a choice that the conservative party membership have to make are you going to
6:02 pm
choose a leader like say boris johnson who wants to pursue a hard bret's it's then you've got the choice of potential national action and the jeremy colvin who's described generally is a marxist becoming becoming the prime minister it's really in a trap of their own making that was very very difficult for them all right and london thank you. the critic out so has been told a state actor is likely responsible for an attack on oil tankers off the coast of the u.a.e. last month saudi arabia norway and the u.a.e. presented a joint report that said the sabotage was sophisticated and coordinated but didn't blame any country specifically the u.s. has previously blamed iran but tehran says israel could be responsible russia's deputy ambassador to the u.n. downplayed the evidence. you shouldn't jump to conclusions too once you know in the face if you refuse or you know no you know nobody cares where you know no conclusions and leave the investigation will be continued so no name no iran no you

6:04 pm
which is farther west papua has been quite wet recently and i think will be again the northern philippines design in particular remains dry because we're looking to the west where you might expect to see something more significant in the way of advancing monsoon equally has been significant rain not just west papua but some parts of northern australia but it's looking a bit weak at the moment the heaviest rain in the last 24 hours has been in west australia that's been wanted and significant for example not them beans average for the month is 50 so it's been exceeded already this is the 1st 1st of many fronts and having drawn warmer down the significance is there for more significant rain in south australia i think but the next frontal system the comes into his purse will be a windy one to the east it hasn't changed very much slowly warming for adelaide in melbourne but only up into the high teens.

there but we don't welcome those hateful divisive years that come from people like brian tamaki in just the double standards. of his views in this particular situation on the one hand ok we want to defend muslims and protect them on the one hand you know stand for anything that allows for them to freely express their religion and for that to be you know our showcase publicly because it's against his basically his racist hateful views. and 10 mckee's views can be dangerous according to former us government intelligence analyst paul buchanan this gets back to the vast pool of enablers and accomplices is you know if you have people of his stature . be. outright islamophobia you have the possibility that one of his followers may decide to take up arms and defense of christianity or in defense of the new zealand way of life. now
6:32 pm
a private security consultant buchanan has lived in new zealand for the past 20 years he doubts the christchurch killer was a true lone wolf if there were other like minded people still out there i mean he was part of a community that was both physical in the south island and then why he was being cheered on and real time during the mass murders including by people who claim to be in new zealand. was just 6 when he arrived in new zealand with his mother and siblings from somalia he says like most refugees he battled racism all his life we feel like you know we have to fight just not only to be. and to express how i think to express our religion. and he says he knows what it's like to be targeted by white supremacists getting chased by skinheads you don't expect
6:33 pm
the scot to suddenly turn around. you knowing he's a skinheads and people pretend life we don't have that history here in new zealand in fact it's wrong on for it's being a hotbed of white supremacy in this country. in the ozarks of the christchurch attack prime minister just seemed. was quick to condemn the shooter we were not a target because we are a safe for those who fight. we were not true isn't for this act of violence because we can darn rices them because we are in on clay for extremism. we would chosen for the very fix that we none of these things her response was widely priorities to round the wound but to google it must it was deeply flawed this whole this is not us again it's denying the experience that it's everything that is us everything
6:34 pm
that is all os that races that hatred that exists in this nation it's us and he says he you know this is in the muslim community who are calling it out for years prior to the christ church massacre we're going to talk nice we've had conversations about actually what causes hate and intolerance and how we need to target the root causes of violent extremists and nothing is done it's that sense of complacency bad got us here a. violent jihad the extreme using was much more of a real threat here than anything else to an harassment of our communities extra profiling of our communities that was not necessarily warranted if you want to monitor us just as much before and make sure you capture every single risk. police minister stuart nash says a royal commission is now examining any failures of authority is in the lead up to the attack if you look around the world a lot of the terrorist incidents. you know what's the protests you know i don't
6:35 pm
think they were oblivious to it but we need to make sure that their intelligence agencies were looking across the border and not being overly concerned about one area to the detriment of another. and it seems other agencies may also have serious questions to answer i've been saying for a long time that this was going to happen and when it did happen this is the voice and the back way hence i should try harder. former soldier peter bridle represented new zealand as a combat shooter. 18 months ago he went for a shooting competition to this rifle range needin listen 5 hours' drive south of christchurch we now know who the march 15th gunman had been a member hiya. bridle says he was shocked to see shooter is wearing camouflage. like cam are on a range in new zealand is a strain on our the army with uniforms not civilians and they were quite militia.
6:36 pm
and he says he became even more alarmed by what he describes as a deeply bigoted views of members one even complaining he was stopped from taking a rifle to a university it was a big red flag for me and then it was the i want to talk about i'll mark my words that the new zealand defense force will be deployed on the streets of dunaden with all of these terror attacks with you know the muslim immigration and what's going on in syria and did you ever mate the shooter from christchurch do you think yes our beliefs are. i strongly believe so and i vividly recall the details of the conversation. he says the shooter anothers how did discussion about the guns used in a stray use worst mass murder. in 1996 martin bryant killed 35 people and wounded 24 that was one of the biggest
6:37 pm
triggers for me going to a place so i can say here this is the 20th of november 27th saying bridle documented he's concerned that night in a posting on a firearms group website and at times i fear their isolation in the redneck friendly tapes out is a bit of a worry i was literally scared so many sympathized but one member of the group urged to go to the police the guy sounds like a fruit loop the next arm want to talk for it. was a mass shooting and done a 30 years ago it doesn't matter it was 30 years ago that mentality. that mentality was still there and after you posted these you went to the police yes absolutely the place i have reportedly said that they have no reason to have an ira or me i don't dismiss that but i have a record here don't i it was not taken seriously i was dismissed hour on the spot the concerns of. the group of us and so too was the person who recently sent this
6:38 pm
message to bridle he tells of his along at scene the christ church shooter firing multiple rounds as he changed magazines and how his complaints to the dunaden rifle club was ignored so i'm not blaming the dunaden place i'm not blaming anyone i'm blaming new zealand as a whole for having this it's never going to happen in a culture. little more than 3 weeks after the shooting at the mosques new zealand's parliament banned all semiautomatic and military style weapons like those used in the attack. but many believe the gun licensing system also needs an overhaul. the christchurch shooter had only been in new zealand a few months when he got a firearms license he required 2 new zealanders who knew him well as referee clearly the the referee or not wouldn't have known him there would appear so on the

surface but i don't want to preempt the press investigation. but it wasn't the 1st time a dangerous destroyed ian had been granted a gun license in new zealand peter edwards had 53 criminal convictions in a story when he got his over just 18 months he bought more than 70 rifles and shotguns modified them into pistols and sold them to criminal gangs before he was jailed in 2014 and maybe what we should there was ensure that a striving to get licenses and but you i mean i'm being but obviously but seriously we do need to make sure that the system has enough integrity to ensure that are not there into the hands of criminals. edwards border all of his far arms from what claims to be the biggest guns to war not just in new zealand but the world the man convict. did of new zealand's previous mass killing at our own. also board

and it will translate made on legal obligations. but new zealand police haven't always agreed they have twice revote steeples gun dealers license for breaches of the arms act only to have it overturned by the courts and successfully sued for damages and uses the court system to his advantage of that there was no doubt would you consider somebody who is a convicted criminal or a fit and proper person to have a gun dealers license i mean i have a personal view around this but as a minister of police i need to follow a process but as the minister for place more importantly do you believe that someone with a serious criminal record should have a gun dealers license in this country is the minister of police what i am instigating is a program to ensure that those who do get deals indorsement often proper what constitutes for profit going forward. we need to work out but i can tell you that

african union's decision to suspend sudan's membership over a violent crackdown on protesters and the military's refusal to hand power to civilians doctors say that more than 100 people have been killed since monday but hundreds of others arrested military officials though deny those numbers and say that just 46 people have died but jones has shut off the internet that has banned al jazeera journalists from reporting from sudan it's been the most violent week there since the military forced president omar al bashir from power in april after months of peaceful protests al-jazeera smith has the latest for us just a warning though you may find some of the images in but it's reports disturbing. another person with a bullet medics rushed to stop the bleeding then another would all the. sound of gunfire. this was cartoon on monday and this is the latest video to emerge from when the palin military group known as the rapid support

military in april after 3 decades in office bernard smith al-jazeera. well here's why many see it here piers prime minister ahmed as someone who could end the crisis in sudan he became africa's youngest head of state when he took office in april last year in just a few short months he's implemented rapid reforms that include lifting a state of emergency and ordering the release of thousands of political prisoners abbie has also allowed dissidents to return home and unblocked hundreds of websites and t.v. channels his biggest achievement so far is ending the state of war with eritrea by agreeing to give up disputed territory on the border let's bring in our low who is an electoral specializing in east african politics and law at kiel university in the united kingdom good to have you with us again how open to mediation will the jointer and the protesters be in sudan.

well i think they have to because. it brings a very clear message from the african union the situation is unsustainable he also brings a very important message in which the union expressed i think its support for the aspiration of the sudanese people and they were clearly stated in its communique that the sudanese must be the sole outers of the distance and they rejected any external intervention by actors within the region so he had that behind him but most importantly as you just said he is a highly progressive leader that brings useful vigor and enthusiasm experience of dealing with transition at home understandable the challenges and opportunities so . i think when you look at the kind of multilateral process that is started by the decision of the african union to suspend sudan and the political weight that

european prime minister brings to the table it would be very difficult for both to turn this number 3 council the opposition alliance to reject could easy appears former peacekeeping role and for him. intentions as a mediator. i think it has always played a very positive and constructive role in terms of peacekeeping operation currently it is the single largest contributor to peacekeeping operations by the united nations its forces played a very positive role not just in darfur but also in south sudan. and that's the you know the fact that they were there as part of both the u.n. and then the african union peacekeeping mission does not really have any significant implication but also remember that the current prime minister is
6:56 pm
a new individual that brought in an entirely new perspective new vision new policies for the benefit and also for the e.u. more broadly so even if there were some issues back in 20032004 i don't think that would affect the process i also think that even the former prime minister the previous prime minister's strongly supported the sudanese government particularly olmert has another bashir even when the international community or it was trying to arrest him so should be a has been a very sort of supporter of so where does the african union fit into all of this. so the african union as the most important original actor has made it very clear that he does not accept the status quo that it demanded that the attorney general terry council transferred power over to the civilian leaders. now one of the i think key message that is sent by the decision yesterday is that if
6:57 pm
the t.m.c. does not transfer power the african union is we need not only to hold political legitimacy from the council to turn the cemetery council but also to impose targeted sanctions against individuals and various interests and i think that makes it very difficult for sudan as a country and for the generals to deal with other international actors to receive support with their financial or other technical forms of support already we have seen the european union for example issuing a statement saying that the statement stablished a framework within which the african union the european union and other international actors would act so that is a very clear statement i think for the for the military council it it did so again as there's a very strong. be by the transitionary council to forestall the decision of the council so that's a very significant could very thanks did. kill. liberia

is bracing itself for widespread protests as president george will struggles to revive the country's economy we have been in office for just 18 months the former footballer had complained on promises to create jobs and to fight corruption a protest coalition says the president has done little to improve the daily lives accusing him of poor leadership thousands of people are expected to join marches across the country liberia is still recovering from a civil war that ended in 2003 the u.n. says it's concerned that the government may not be able to handle large scale protests let's speak to liberian political analyst rob paley he joins us now by from oxford good to have you with us is this all about the leadership of george weah. i'm sorry would you please repeat the question is this really all about the leadership of george weah. i think it's more than the leadership of george lee it

goes back to the economy i mean the chinese in a shambles i was in liberia for a few weeks ago and people could basically not even provide for themselves buying a basic bag of rice which is a local staple of me commie was difficult for the vast majority of people i spoke to on the ground those who are doing relatively well as well as those who have their livelihoods that are threatened so it's not just about the leadership of we it's the leadership of the entire governance ecosystem the judiciary is to blame as well as the national legislature which has also enabled you know widespread government that's not only in this the ministration but also in previous administration as well as corruption as well as mismanagement so it's not just about we it's about the entire governance ecosystem and as far as the process concerned i mean who is a the protesters that we're expecting to see. moved by genuine fears or is there a political dynamic at work here to. i think ordinary citizens
7:00 pm
who will show up today for this protest have genuine concerns about their economic state right there their livelihoods being threatened but i think there are also a lot of political motives that i find to be quite problematic so a number of the protest leaders who are heads of the council of patriots i think have dubious motivations some of them are members of the previous administration some of them are members of the administration of charles taylor who was a rebel leader turned president many of whom benefited from the economic mismanagement of those 2 administrations and the question that a lot of liberians have who may or may not show up for the protests today is what are their motives are they genuine are they actually representing the will of the people so i think there is both genuine economic concerns that people have who will show up at the protest but i think a lot of the protest leaders also have a lot of motives that are not necessarily genuine.
