on the set could have you with us just sort of the scene for us about what it was actually like before the military went in and disbanded that protest site because you know you've seen it before and after well let me tell you there was a real carnival like atmosphere we would go almost every evening spend a few hours on the site speaking to people there was a family atmosphere there were places where you could little kids could get make up you know but the sudanese flag on their faces it was very much a place where people would go and meet with people and you know demand freedom you'd have a challenge many methane which means civilian civilian rule there was stages music playing so it was a very peaceful it was angry i mean there was anger towards the military council but it wasn't in any way violent. and it was it was a great atmosphere a family atmosphere and then during this that happened on june the 3rd happened because. the military went into the site and cleared it violently they used heavy

weaponry on unarmed civilian protesters and then the nature of the protests we've been actually changed was completely empty streets now we took a drawing a couple of days later through the protests it was unrecognizable there were these paintings on the walls revolutionary paintings commemorating world gone on in 24 hours those paintings were all whitewashed they'd all gone so the military had to raise every sign of any player protests taking place it was almost like the protests hadn't happened and so you speak to the protest movement leaders and people involved in the protests we've been saying well now these empty streets are protests these strikes operates as this is the only thing we have left and of course the military had when they went into the camp. it had said leading up to the moment that the. area's been infiltrated by criminals and by gangs i mean what sort of evidence how would you describe that statement and those
10:55 pm
statements up to june the 3rd well there was no evidence presented by the military themselves for these infiltrators and they had been using that word for weeks previously saying their protest movement has been infiltrated by criminal elements and we need to control them the protest leaders themselves are encouraging these criminal elements coming in and that was always the accusation from the military but no evidence was ever presented certainly we didn't see any kind of criminal activity when we were at the protest site there may well have been but we did see it. but no evidence was ever presented now there was an area outside of the protest site it was called colombia colombia was where young people go and they were drink legal alcohol and they would smoke dope and this was seen as a criminal element but it wasn't anything to do with the protesters so when they went in and they cleared colombia then they went ahead and took the city and on june the 3rd this was a police operation that could have been done without the military involved if they just wanted to get rid of those young people who were taking part in criminal

this really could actually be as large as the occupy protests which were held in 24th and shut down parts of the central part of hong kong but despite their efforts this bill is likely to be passed by the hong kong government has a majority in the cities and the chief executive harry lam want to abide by the end of the month. some of even call this the final fight for hong kong so how did it all come to this what critics say beijing has been encroaching on the city's autonomy for years in 2012 the hong kong government tried to include national education courses in schools to sort of nurture patriotism towards mainland china and that led to mass protests which forced the government to council the plan then 2 years later police fired tear gas against tens of thousands of protesters demanding direct elections the next day huge crowds came out on the city's main roads were blocked by demonstrators for 2 and a half months 4 of the 9 leaders behind what became known as the umbrella movement
