on iran has been a very dangerous player very bad player there a nation of terror and we will put up with it the times call for extreme caution in separating fact from fiction legitimate voices from paid trolls and credible commentators from virtual ones. for analysts reporters policymakers anyone who is trying to make sense of iran these days if their only point of reference is what's happening on social media they should think twice before publishing it as this is how iranians feel about this things one thing that these 2 seemingly unrelated stories that have come out at the same time prove is that this space is highly manipulative and it's far from reflection of iranian public opinion. we're discussing other media stories that are on our radar this week with one of our producers johannes joe hundreds of thousands of protesters on the streets of

hong kong this week demanding that the government scrap this proposed new extradition of our journalists were among those protesters why is that well primarily because of fears among press freedom at forgets that this new bill which would allow the extradition of alleged criminals from the semi autonomous city of hong kong to mainland china will be used by beijing as a way to target political enemies and critics including journalists and their sources once in china they say those extradited would be at the mercy of an opaque justice system and at risk of serious human rights abuses according to reporters without borders china currently holds at least 111 journalist under life threatening conditions in an open letter sent to carry law who is hong kong's head of government $23.00 human rights organizations including the committee to protect journalists and pen hong kong urged the government to scrap the law and what about news outlets on the chinese mainland how have. they've been covering this story
5:34 pm
well they've either completely ignored the protests china's state broadcaster for example that not mention them at all or they are parroting the communist party's line on this in some cases blaming the unrest on foreign interference and collusion with the west the chinese edition of the global times was one example of that saying quote some international forces have significantly strengthened their interaction with the hong kong opposition in recent months the english language paper china daily also played down the story it said that more than 800000 people had backed the new law in an online petition in position countering a protest by about 240000 people which clearly is a very conservative estimate of the numbers out on the street online searches for news on the demonstrations on china's twitter like way bow or the messaging app you'll get no results at all nothing and well no such answer ship currently exists in hong kong activists are warning that those liberties are slowly being eroded as beijing moves to tighten its grip on the city ok thanks chad. for 4 months now

algerians have been hitting the streets demanding political change while they've succeeded in toppling the country's long time president abdullah as he's beautifully they are done they're demanding a comprehensive dismantling of the ruling elite there rallying cry they must all go many algerians are far too politically aware to trust the state owned news media which initially under played the protest story and continues to spin it long before the demonstrations began a generation of youtube people like garage. and nest tina emerged as unofficial spokespeople for algerian youth and as yon is a musician now living in exile in prague and tina is a comedian still posting material from his home in the algerian capital both get clicks in the multimillions we spoke with the 2 of them about the grievances they articulate the political and social changes they advocate in the videos that they've produced that are now part of the soundtrack of the algerian revolution.

on housing seeker this is al jazeera live from doha also coming up heads of state from iran russia and china made into stand to discuss regional security the tanker incidents in the gulf could dominate the talks. growing calls to find out who's responsible the u. . and weighs in over the incident in the gulf of oman. the risk of spread to countries outside the region remains low. and the world health organization decides whether to declare a global health emergency on africa's ebola outbreak. hong kong has suspended a bill that would allow extraditions of suspects to mainland china chief executive kerry lamb called a media conference to announce the reversal off the saying earlier this week she
5:50 pm
would push ahead with the bill hundreds of thousands of people have protested against it and more mass demonstrations were planned for sunday after repeated internal deliberations over the last 2 days i now announce that the government has decided to suspend the legislative amendment exercise restart all communication with all sectors of society do more explanation work and listen to different views of society i want to stress that the government is that ducting an open mind to heat comprehensively different views in society toss the bill well scott lay is live for us now in hong kong with more on this so scott this would appear to be a climb down from the hong kong government and something that the protesters will be celebrating at least for now. at least for now yes and also in that press conference kerry lamb the executive director here. hong kong's
5:51 pm
government she also said that you know their. their government didn't do the best job of communicating this bill she said and she said that she's working to correct that there's really no time line now what's going to happen with the bill again is as we heard her say there it's going it's going to be paused but we know that it's not dead and as far as other celebrations from the protesters obviously this is this is that a good development for them but it's not over they want this bill killed it will probably see some some statements along those lines in the coming hours probably on sunday when they're holding this mass march like they did last sunday that's almost a 1000000 people so that's still going to take place we also know that the kerry lead is is also meeting with going to be meeting with the opposition in the legislative council that's going to be happening later on today she's reaching across the aisle if you will to discuss this further again she's saying that this is something that's not dead this extradition bill proposed expedition bill it's
5:52 pm
something that's been put on pause there needs to be better communication obviously within the legislative council that's what she's meeting with with the opposition later on today but then also with the with the community with the hong kong community because we saw such an outpouring over the last several days indeed decision was the result of those huge protests that we saw in hong kong this pos we just just feel a scene here a little bit on what is it about this bill that that many people are so angry about and what it involves for them. specifically with this bill it's the fact that. criminal suspects can be extradited to mainland china and something that a lot of hong kong people are very proud of is their independent judicial system here in hong kong very different from what it's like in mainland china it's transparent here it's known around the world as being fair so the concern is if there is. extradition bill pushes forward the certain suspects could be extradited
5:53 pm
to china bigger concern too is that maybe the chinese government will trump up charges against critics here in hong kong that is the main concern specifically with this bill that's the immediate goal for these pro-democracy protesters but the broader issue too is something that's been happening over the last 5 years plus and that is what pro-democracy demonstrators see as an erosion to hong kong's identity by beijing and that's something that she jumping is really pushed forward with this bill being one but then also the certain powers that he's exerting beijing powers he's been exerting here in hong kong that's the broader issue and that's why you see such a large large outpouring of dissatisfaction with this specific bill haslam all right for the 1st there in hong kong now emily lau is a former leader of the democratic party in hong kong and spent nearly 25 years as a legislator she says that despite lam's announcement many in hong kong will still be unhappy. people want to just kill the bill we don't want it
5:54 pm
we don't want to sort hanging over our heads and that is what it is that was so i think many people are going to be very dissatisfied it's offend fundamental issues of 2 different systems in hong kong we have the rule of law independent judiciary protection of human rights or with a mainland china is completely lawless that's that's right a people feel barry very unsafe if you center but they're at the trial you cannot guarantee the person is going to get a fair trial so it's not a communication problem what she said it's nonsense of course the protests will continue tomorrow and i don't know how many hundreds of thousands will turn out some may be a bit relaxed that have been just not pushing ahead or a boat next week in the legislative perhaps or the better perfect sect of the matter is they have been negotiating with the mainland authorities but we're 20 yes
5:55 pm
about rendition of ancient and got nowhere and so so long as the 2 legal systems are so different so long as you cannot guarantee the person sent back would you have fair trial it's very difficult to have a deal i don't know is not a communication problem when country 2 systems is really crumbling and so do all our freedoms and the rule of law that's what really very comes up it's not just the spirit but the whole promise of one country system seem to be slipping away and the one a colonial power a bit ted is doing precious little so that's why we have to link to the international community immunity to speak out on our behalf. still unknown who is responsible for the explosions on 2 tankers in the gulf of oman on thursday but the united states believes it was iran tehran denies the accusation and president trump said a graining minute grainy video released by the u.s.
5:56 pm
central command on thursday is proof of iran's involvement how much volatile from. what or who is to blame for the explosions on board 2 tankers in the gulf of oman the u.s. blames iran and they released this video purporting to show iran a sort of illusory gods removing an unexploded limpet mine from the japanese old kuta courageous the timestamp according to the americans shows it happened after the vessels crew had been rescued well ron didn't do it and do you know they did it because you saw the lower i guess one of the mines didn't explode and it probably got essentially a run written all over it and you sort of voted no trying to take the mine off and successfully took that mine off the boat and that was exposed that was a boat that will damn. near didn't want the evidence left behind i just i don't know that we have a signature we could be perfect in the dark that worked very well. russia and
5:57 pm
germany say the video at least inconclusive and the incident requires 30 s. today should iranian leaders accuse the u.s. of what they call diplomacy against the country. speaking at a gathering of eurasia leaders in kyrgyzstan iranian president hassan rouhani said the u.s. is pushing and aggressive stance that cannot be tolerated. as the government of the united states over the last 2 years using economic and military capacity and is creating an aggressive approach the united states has stepped over all the norms and regulations of the international community and has created new threats for the region and the world. and the war of words the japanese owner of one of the ships has cast doubts on the u.s. claim that mines were used he said the ships a lot of soft flying objects before the explosion this for analysts hard evidence is kept but intentions on the one side or the other are easy to gain your on may

well one to prove that if squeezed it can hit back by dissipating oil supplies through the strait of hormuz the u.s. leaders on the other hand have long shown their desire to punish iran for its alleged nuclear ambitions one analyst says whoever is behind the attack incident has given the us a perfect opportunity but i think it's pretty clear that the united states administration is really rushing to judgment there is quite a bit of cynicism out there are young people who are trying to read the messages from palm bay oh a lot of people think this is possibly a little too convenient given that there are some in washington some in certain countries in the region that want to see the tensions between the u.s. and iran remain really high some of those countries are iran a sunni muslim neighbors saudi arabia and the united arab emirates in addition to
5:59 pm
israel but there was no telling what a war on iran could cause to the region gulf nations have much to do is if a major war breaks out even a north country life could find itself in the crossfire because of its location other nations such as the united arab emirates may well really think before encouraging a conflict that's good and the economy prosper. some advice on disease must come home and. vents in the gulf have been a topic of discussion in 10 downing leaders from more than 30 countries are there to talk about economic and security challenges in the region bernard smith joins us live now from the tatic capital so bernard iranian president hassan rouhani has brief leaders at the summit what we have to say yeah well he has again essentially using stronger language than he used in the past few days he's renewed really his ultimatum to the united states and he says iran is going to

continue really scaling back its compliance with this j c p o away this nuclear deal but the americans withdrew from last year in this deal that meant iran sold access enrich uranium and would not therefore be able to create a nuclear bomb iran has scaled back its cooperation with it so it might increase your reign in production has on rouhani so that really iran's patients within and he said that they while expressing a readiness to engage in any sort of bilateral interaction has decided to cease performing on some of its commitments under the j c p o and he really what he's reiterating is this 60 day deadline he gave in may. will start enriching uranium as a high level unless the world powers move to protect iran from u.s. sanctions as i'm and so going to tell us more about some of the other key players that are attending we know the russian and turkey.
