that we can all breathe easy because fears of a trade war between china and the u.s. getting even worse have been eased for now at least after a summit of the world's biggest economies on the sidelines of the g. 20 in osaka u.s. president trump agreed to resume talks with china and said he wouldn't be imposing further tariffs on chinese imports the leaders of the world's most industrialized nations did agree on a climate control deal similar. the one that was struck last year in argentina that the u.s. was the only nation refusing to commit to that climate change mechanism and president trump said he did raise the murder of the journalist jamal khashoggi with saudi crown prince mohammed bin salman but he later refused to blame him for being behind it white house correspondent kimberly halkett begins our coverage. with fears of further escalation in the trade war between the united states and china chinese president xi jinping issued words of warning to u.s. president donald trump. should only china and the united states

benefit from. a confrontation. of the united states donald j. troll those words may have resonated following that meeting on the 2nd day of the g. 20 summit trump announced a breakthrough no new u.s. tariffs on chinese goods and a restart of stalled trade talks we're going to work with china on where we left off to see if we can make a deal but the 25 percent tariff already on 250000000000 in chinese goods into the united states remains in place the threat of tariffs on an additional $300000000000.00 more in chinese products a potential risk to the global economy have been delayed for now still unresolved the issue of huawei the chinese telecoms manufacturer the u.s. is banned from its markets and accused of facilitating espionage and intellectual

property theft we mentioned way i said we'll have to save that till the very end we'll have to see. tensions have also been escalating between the u.s. and turkey over its purchase of the russian s 400 air defense system the u.s. warned the buy in from the russians would threaten turkey's role in the f. 35 fighter jet program and could trigger u.s. sanctions on saturday truck blamed his predecessor president barack obama and defended the purchase by turkey's president he wanted to buy the patriot missile president obama's group said no he kept wanting to but they kept saying no no no couldn't buy it we needed it for defense he knew so he then went to russia it was these types of bilateral controversies that captured headlines during the 2. today meeting of leaders for the world's 20 major economies so much so the leaders final declaration stop short of what many had hoped it was going to tell me to do in this

summit we were able to agree on fundamental principles backing a free trade system which is to ensure free fair nondiscriminatory trade and open markets as well as conditions of fair competition but the g 20 declaration failed to denounce protectionism and its impact on global economic growth perhaps because this was a meeting dominated by bilateral issues making resolution of global matters a struggle kimberley health at al-jazeera osaka all right we can do it bret bruno who's in washington he served as the director of global engagement in the white house under president barack obama thank you very much for joining us and picking up on kimberly's last point and that is that this was a summit all about the bilateral than that would have suited president trump because he doesn't really do multi-lateralism does he like to go one on one meetings how do you think it went for him well i think it's a mix performance on the one hand we didn't have the disasters the drama of past g.

20 past the 7 summits but at the same time there was actually very little that he has to show for his performance i mean it's good news that we didn't further exacerbate the trade war with china but at the same time there's not much that he actually has been able to extract from xi jinping so i think at this point we avoided the worst but we certainly didn't accomplish anything it was interesting that he was asked a question as to why he gets on particularly well with the moral thora tarion types of leaders putin and then with. kim jong un was mentioned in the he seemed to dodge dodge the question but it was a very interesting point to raise at his press conference was in that. it is and i think certainly trump has tendencies that prefer those strong leaders who in many cases do exert or thera tarion either tendencies are or are
11:55 pm
themselves tarion leaders and he seems to embrace that style of leadership which is an anathema to the kind of leaders we expect here in the united states so certainly there is this divide between the aspiration trump has for the role of the presidency and the aspiration the american people have right so what do you think then of the comments made by. really stole the headlines when he gave the in t.v. to the financial times when he talked about liberalism in the values of liberalism being obsolete well i'm really concerned by how the financial times and other media provide putin this very powerful platform megaphone really to try and undermine the western order i mean this quite frankly was a russian information operation and it was delivered to you by the financial times

i think you know you know how marx sorry to interrupt but i think you think it's a role of a respectable international publication to to publish the views of all thoughts of leaders whether it whether their views agree with the also not well yes and no but i think it's important to also put them in balance to analyze what are some of the objectives and what putin is trying to do with this interview is to undermine international institutions undermined confidence in the west and i think he achieved a good deal with that interview and so you obviously don't agree with him that institutions like the g. 20 itself perhaps not fit for today's world where there is a rise in the national is and and puppet isn't. i think what we're seeing are efforts both by putin but by trump himself to undermine these kind of fora and to

search for the kinds of events the kinds of engagements that will provide them with more power them with more influence because what we see at a g. 20 summit is the diminishment as i wrote in the business insider of the role of individual presidents and it becomes much more about what collectively they can achieve and that's not something that suits putin or president trump right and finally it seems to be an invitation to meet by tweet president skiing for kim jong un to meet in a meeting at the d.m.z. for a handshake and a hello is kind of unconventional hey you know i call this teller a swift esque diplomacy call me maybe i'm going to be in the area but it really unfortunately is emblematic of the kind of impulsive diplomacy that trump his practice and that doesn't necessarily lead to progress what we see are

a lot of fits and starts and unfortunately peace seems rather elusive all right thank you very much indeed brett brew and talking to us live from washington thank you. well another of the talking points at the g. 20 was the meeting between president trump and the saudi crown prince and it appears they are as close as ever. reports very much for being here thank you for another meeting between friends as u.s. president donald trump sat down with saudi crown prince muhammad ali son man for breakfast and osaka on saturday the true leader is demonstrating just how form they are of each other than with you mr president we did a lot of great achievement in the political sides who decide. military side and economical side specially if we never of them before we saw i believe that will contribute in a lot both country good for g.d.p. growth job creation more safety for both countries trump who has consistently been asked by u.s. politicians to sanction saudis implicated in the murder of journalist she tried to

focus attention on other issues instead crown prince of saudi arabia a friend of mine a man who has really done things in the last 5 years in terms of opening up saudi arabia and i think especially what you've done for women and seeing what's happening it's like a revolution in a very positive way journalists however insisted on raising the issue of their murdered colleagues each time they did know trump ignored them and thank you all very much appreciate it very much. thank you very much at the start of the g. 20 summit the crown prince made a point of demonstrating that he still had a place at the center of the international community the u.s. president's fared no effort to show how much he supported the saudi era parents widely believed to have been behind whistle trees killing a recent u.n. report slate blamed for the murder with the saudi states and called for an

investigation of involvement at the highest level. despite both u.s. and saudi attempts to ignore last october's murder in istanbul turkey is president roger tabor to one raise the case at a media conference during the summit insisting that the international community has a duty to bring those responsible to accounts we she made. they don't need to look elsewhere for the perpetrator in fact there are the lies that the former foreign minister said and the lies they made in b.s.a. it's so clear what else should i say they need to reveal this the documents are there the recordings are there 1st and foremost a human was killed asked again later in the day and president trumped this time trolls not to ignore the question.
