a rare eclipse. it's just been i am in hong kong where a massive cleanup operation has begun the day off the hundreds of protesters stormed the city's legislature monday's violence left day bodies scattered all over the building police used tear gas to clear the area off to demonstrate just smashed windows and splashed graffiti on its rules although still the day the government held ceremonies to mark 22 years since the end of british rule and hundreds of thousands joined a peaceful march where hong kong's leader carried them condemn the actions of protesters that stormed the legislative council on monday evening. extreme use soft violence and vandalism by protesters who stormed into the legislative council building over a period of time so this is something that we should seriously come down because
6:02 am
nothing is more important than the rule of law in hong kong so i hope community at large will agree with us that with these violent acts that we have seen it is right for us to condemn it hong kong's police chief justify the temporary treat with which some say create the gap for protesters to storm the building we found that there was some protest tampering with the electricity poppy i only find that some of the lights have gone out and in fear of a total dock out that the protester while charging someone turned off the like i'm afraid that there will be people stepping people there were already a toxic powder. attack on my office in the afternoon so without knowing whether this is another toxic powder tech we have no other choice
6:03 am
but to temporarily retreat from that cold. well katrina is standing by for us in beijing with the latest reaction out of china we'll also be live in hong kong with our correspondent sara clark but 1st when hate takes a look back at how monday's events unfolded. after another day of protests in hong kong police ran out of patience with tear gas and battens they moved in to clear the area around the legislative council hong kong's parliament it's become the focal point of anti-government rallies over the past 3 weeks because protesters believe it's now largely controlled by mainland china this time they had little choice but to flee and quickly disappeared into the nights. the catalyst for the police action was a decision by the protesters to seize control of the legislative council after hours of smashing windows and doors they went inside vandalizing the building as
6:04 am
they went after several protests over the past 3 weeks some of them turning violent in clashes between protesters and police this group was able to force its way into the debating chamber in the legislative council facing very little resistance along the way they say they had no choice but to escalate the situation after becoming frustrated that the government wasn't listening to them and i think for many many young people. they didn't expect that it took so long for the government. to respond there are rallies every year on july the 1st which is the day 22 years ago that hong kong was handed back to china by great britain but there were much larger numbers this year because of a proposed extradition law it would allow suspects in criminal cases to be sent to mainland china to face trial in the justice system that critics say is deeply flawed. the bill has been suspended but opponents want it scrapped altogether and
6:05 am
the resignation of hong kong's chief executive who spoke earlier. monday at a ceremony to mark the anniversary. of the instant that happened in recent months has led to control the sea and disputes between the public and the government this has made me fully realize that i as a politician i have to remind myself all the time the need to cross a public event accurately. the system agreed between great britain and china 22 years ago was one country 2 systems for 50 years but protesters believe that deal is being pushed aside by kerry lamb and 2 government who they say are increasingly being dictated to by beijing. soon after police moved into the latest rally it was over the streets in the legislative council and their defiance dispersed but they left their mark on what's supposed to be the center of power in hong kong there will no doubt be repercussions but they're vowing to continue a fight that they say has become about much more than
6:06 am
a proposed law it's about the future of the city wayne hay al jazeera hong kong well let's go live now to sarah clarke in hong kong sara so the cleanup operations been going on now for some time just bring us up to date with what's been happening there. the clean up has been going on for hours now since before daylight and we've got piles and piles of rubbish scattered around the entire of the lips of council building or government headquarters here in central hong kong and now it's policy but everything from hundreds if not thousands of umbrella as well as all the devices that were used to store and smash through this floss we're talking saw in the street signs we're talking fences lights fences were dismantled around this area some of those were blockades or barricades that were used in the protests yesterday but others were fences that actually had screwdrivers and they are they detach that screwdrivers or they touch those those fences they've used those 1 then to smash through here so those piles of rubbish are still here we've had trucks removing them but it's going to take
6:07 am
some time for all of this rubbish to be cleared and we're just outside inside there's also a massive area that's been trashed including inside the council chamber which is where the lawmakers are restricted or allowed to go in but not the public in the problem of the protesters yet so they've got access to i should also start now that the area where we were inside before we've now been pushed out and that area is now a bank. cordoned off and police have cooled this area a crime zone simply because kerry land wants to pursue the prosecution of those protesters who were involved in yesterday's storming of monday's storming of hong kong's parliament and sara how is the media there in hong kong been looking at last night's events and whether the protests go from here as well. well as you'd imagine it's on the front page of every newspaper here we've got this fund this is the the oriental daily news it's a private it's obviously got the front page showing there's a protest of storming into the china but it's the government will never be the same
6:08 am
we've got this one which is apple direly it's pretty considerable product of a critic newspaper front it's got here protesters. with some amazing shots showing the turnaround of events yesterday and i should also say other developing news the executive council which is the hong kong cabinet it's making for the 1st time in some weeks kerry lamb is hosting that she's cancelled media session but she is hosting that have it meeting we've also been talking to some of the pro-democracy lawmakers have been coming in to the let's of council they've been expressing their discontent with a concern about what happened yesterday that could be seen as a negative for the pro democratic movement or to sort of talk in hong kong so thank you let's talk to katrina you now and she's in the chinese capital beijing katrina so what's been the reaction there in beijing to events in hong kong as the chinese government has taken the action do you think. well so far here in beijing it's been very quiet we haven't heard an official
6:09 am
response from beijing we are still waiting on that but we can assume that the chinese censorship agency hit here has been on overdrive from what we've seen we haven't seen any poorest on social media about these riots is very little recent online and this is because the chinese government is very good to sort of take down any posts that they think would stir discontent the events of last night are going to cause very some very uncomfortable questions for the chinese government and here they've been at pains to convince the people of the mainland that hong kong people love the fact that they're now returned to the motherland they returned to china and we've had some responses there from state media although we haven't seen anything in terms of social media so so far what we've seen falls into 2 categories i'm going to show you some headlines from some to state media newspapers quite different to what we would have seen in hong kong we've got here for the global times and we'll have china daily no pictures of protest instead we've got pictures
6:10 am
over celebrations in hong kong you've got another thing if people are saying i love hong kong and and really are having a good time here all yesterday so according to state media at least a decent papers nothing happened it was all happy there was a big celebration but of course we did see from the global times online not on the front page but online and editorial which really struck back at the protestors and this really sort of reflects what the chinese government are going to probably try to do when they do respond to this protest which is to discredit those who are who are involved let me just read a few lines of that he mentioned that these were nothing short of of mobs and they were only acting out of blind arrogance and rage with a complete disregard for law and very interestingly this line he says those who love the city must be sad and frustrated so we're seeing a real. attempts at least by state media to divide the people of hong kong and to
6:11 am
put the events of last night really as the behavior of radicals the behavior of some bad eggs which really have nothing to do with how the people here in hong kong the mainstream people who call feel at least that's the that's the message they're trying to get across here all right to katrina you were there in beijing katrina thank you now u.s. president donald trump says iran is playing with fire that solve the un's nuclear watchdog confirmed that iran is stockpiling more enriched uranium than allowed by the 25th the nuclear deal washington warned it will never allow iran to develop nuclear weapons and that it will continue its maximum pressure campaign until 10 iran changes course is what trump told reporters at the white house. they know what they're doing you know what they're playing with and i think they're playing with fire so no message to iran whatsoever when earlier rounds foreign ministers said tehran does have the right to exceed the limit because the 2050 nuclear deal has not been upheld. as i've been informed iran has exceeded the 300 kilogram limit
6:12 am
to enrich uranium we had previously announced they simply were transparent in saying what we are going to do we considered a tower right reserved in the nuclear. power your coffee and. actions by the europeans have not been enough so we will move ahead with our plan we are in the process of doing our 1st phase of action increasing our stockpile of enriched uranium as well as our heavy water reserves we have already announced the 2nd phase which would be surpassing the rhenium enrichment limit of 3.6 percent this will be our next step. john hendren has more now from washington d.c. . president donald trump says iran is playing with fire that is after iran announced that it is violating the 2015 nuclear agreement the multi-national agreement in which it set levels at which it could store stockpiles of uranium
6:13 am
before that happened the white house put out a statement saying in part maximum pressure on the iranian regime will continue until its leaders alter their course of action the regime must end its nuclear ambitions and its malign behavior but responses have also been pouring in through the 280 character format of twitter from the administration we have secretary mike pompei oh the u.s. secretary of state saying the world's top sponsor of terrorism can never be allowed to enrich uranium at any level john bolton the national security adviser for the u.s. says there is no reason for iran to increase its enrichment unless it is part of an effort to reduce the breakout time to produce nuclear weapons there have also been responses from the democratic presidential candidates bernie sanders says he's pushed us to the brink of war with iran and kept us in the horrific saudi led war in yemen we need real diplomacy any clothes are a centrist candidate says now iran is closer to a nuclear weapon than before trump took office this did not need to happen and we
6:14 am
should negotiate back into the agreement that's the 2015 nuclear agreement the us has bailed out of in joe biden the former vice president and leading candidate in the democratic presidential race says trump's iran policy has alienated us from our allies and taken us to the brink of another war in the middle east everything this president does is backwards this could end in a number of different ways with an agreement possibly between the u.s. and iran with a military conflict like the one that only days ago president trump said he was within 10 minutes of ordering or we could have the kind of prolonged standoff that we have right now. time for a short break here and al-jazeera when we come back foreign observers give a thumbs down to a crucial election that took place in albania over the weekend and we'll tell you about a foreign invader that's choking nigeria's rivers and waterways more of that stands .
