bahrain where his role was to catch al-qaeda leaders in the middle east and pakistan this included the capture of a saudi citizen known as abu zubaida you know. i think underestimate it when i say battery's i mean the back really government i believe underestimated the importance of the problem that they had they thought that they could divide their own opponents by having their opponents attack each other and that's not the way that it worked out i think that the bahraini government believed that it could pit sunni fundamentalists against the shia population and keep both sides divided that way and that's not what happened what happened was it further angered the population and at the same time encouraged fundamentalism among the sunnis so they mean at least as to whom you are nasser. did the one of the.

and this american habit or. that's for sure i mean it's a tool that rand has a huge unfortunately on life not unlike other neighboring countries where that is the u.a.e. or or saudi arabia or egypt or are that regimes that using these elements basically is a form of terrorism a state run down or is him against a peaceful and a dissidents if you know when we captured was a beta on march 22nd 2002 we also captured with him his diary and i went through his diary that night and in that diary were the cell phone numbers the mobile phone numbers of 3 members of the saudi royal family so i wrote a classified cable back to cia headquarters and i said listen i found something
9:25 pm
that i think is very important these are the mobile numbers and these 3 men are members of the wood family the saudi royal family well within weeks one of them died in a one car accident in the desert one of them went camping in the desert and died of thirst if you can imagine such a thing and the 3rd one disappeared and no one ever saw him again that tells me that these men knew too much they knew about their own government and its work with al qaeda at least at the creation of al qaeda if not after the september 11th attacks and they were too much of a liability to allow to remain alive that's not unique just to the saudis. that happens with every government in the region that decides to cultivate this

rounds of tear gas as you mentioned several arrests and some people injured as the place trying to clear those people off the streets now at one of the other rally points which is enclosed by by which is again what one of the biggest. retail areas in hong kong a lot of those protesters are now flooding back in to this area of so i want to support those protesters who are being cleared off the streets out this standoff has been continuing for some time now but the right place doesn't look like they're going to back down so the level of violence will confrontations will no doubt continue throughout the night and we're seeing more and more clashes between protesters and police say their protest is cause for an inquiry into police conduct misconduct they say i mean how potentially volatile the situation in hand. well this is the 2nd night of violent clashes between the police and protesters
9:55 pm
there's now a lot of accusations of anger against the police from those protesters because they've been accusing them of using excessive force trying to clear out some of these some of the peaceful rallies but this is being some violence but there are accusations that the police using excessive force on the protesters that. is on this is scary as for where we go next trying to change policy body on hong kong and macau if it is doing a press conference tomorrow at 3 pm monday at 3 pm local time in beijing to give us this situation all they've stance on the ongoing escalating violence and protests in hong kong this is a bit about the. same clashes and confrontations on a weekend we bice's at the moment these protesters who are now moving into the side one area they look like they're willing to die throughout the night and sara would of course be watching very closely tomorrow to see what the chinese government tests say about what's happening but what about authorities in hong kong.
9:56 pm
themselves and carrying their what did they say we haven't very much from them lately. well they're. now with the been no concessions from the side not the side of the government all the protests appear to be backing down which is why these protests are continuing it started off simply as a message will opposition against this opposed extradition bill which could see fugitives in hong kong extradited to the milan to milan china but it started with all this isn't that now it's a water movement what a group of people who are calling for greater democracy in hong kong so it's not the side backing down these protests will continue. and center as you say these have become about so much more than the extradition and often we see protests there about specific issues yesterday they gathered and you know all. about
9:57 pm
a 100 people attack to protest as in that area last week what is there an issue that protesters. on the streets for today. well the issue again is accusations of the police using excessive force at these particular rallies as i mentioned we've seen numerous rallies i've since june where we had 1000000 people do a peaceful rally one week and the following week and we had 2000000 people now those rallies were peaceful demonstrations like 2 into the evening it seems like are occurring with the younger more hardcore protesters they're willing to escalate these protests rallies to a higher level of bodett. confrontations between the police and the protesters and i think big concern is that they not being the government has said very little on this matter yes has she said this particular bill is did but they
9:58 pm
concern is that the extradition bill hasn't been dumped all together it could be brought back on the table in a different form and that until there's some concession made on the side not the not the big government all the purchases are looking to back down south thank you very much for that from now live in hong kong we are going to get more on this we're joined by adam a china researcher at a career university and he's joining us live from berlin very good to have you with us on al-jazeera so as sara was saying we are expecting to hear from the chinese government and beijing tomorrow on monday about what's happening how warry do you think that the chinese government about these 7 weeks of protests in hong kong. i think that continuing massive protests in hong kong is a direct challenge to beijing's authority to the chinese communist party and the really highlights i think that the border is a book cross-section of pomponne society not happy with how things are going and
9:59 pm
highlights the key contradiction at the heart of this it that and that is on the one hand beijing is trying to integrate hong kong into its political system and on the other hand home calm is attempt to to keep their rights so i think beijing is rightly really worried about. this crisis has gone on for much longer than ageing initially anticipated. and indeed i think the longer this goes on for the stronger these crisis what challenge the legitimacy of the communist party at home as well as its image abroad and where do you see this going because again it's been 7 weeks of protests protest as according for the resignation of carrying them there were reports circulating a few weeks ago that she had actually offered a was thinking about offering her resignation to chinese authorities they wanted her to resolve the crisis. shot i mean i mean certainly they want
10:00 pm
her to resolve the crisis and she supposedly offered her resignation but really it's a job that nobody wants at the moment because. because a broad cross section of the hong kong society is not happy with the hong kong government is losing its remaining trust in the hong kong government's ability to protect their interests to act independently of beijing and they don't trust the beijing government so i think that's at the heart of it is a lack of trust in hong kong police does a lack of trust in hong kong government there's a lack of trust in the government in beijing and that's why people are in the streets so this is not just about. violence police use of oil.
