just hours after hezbollah promised to shoot down any israeli drone that violates lebanese airspace it is blaming israel for sending 2 drones to it stronghold in the southern suburbs of beirut one of those drones exploded according to the hezbollah leader they were on a suicide mission but there were no casualties in that attack the drone attack just hours after the israeli army a knowledge ng that it carried out air strikes near the syrian capital damascus hezbollah acknowledging that its bases was hit and in fact 2 of its fighters were killed and while nasrallah was addressing it was was giving a speech late on sunday yet another drone attack reported in iraq close to the syrian border there have been a series of drone strikes in iraq targeting groups backed by iran paramilitary groups that the government calls popular popular mobilization forces so israel is believed now to be operating against iran and iran backed groups in 3 countries in
6:01 pm
the region levanon syria and iraq and clearly this is a sharp escalation so far iran and its allies have not retaliated they are now threatening retaliation the words of the hezbollah leader hassan nasrallah were quite strong he's saying that these drone attacks will not be left unaddressed and we can't allow israel to continue violating lebanese airspace so a sharp escalation if those retaliation if the if those groups start to retaliate then the situation could spiral out of control still head on al jazeera. migrants friend in israel a rush to get into ecuador late on sunday plus. i'm going fishing in hampton virginia where the people here are commemorating 400 years since the 1st africans were brought to the english speaking qualities and forced to work their sleeves.

hello once again the philippines will become the source of the developing tropical system of some sort you get an idea of the big circulation he was that's not the one that's going to make a difference in the next couple of days i think this circulation is going to cross to the side of luzon its main effect is going to enhance the rainfall which has already produced some floods anyway newell's news on but the dark green scent is drifting science was toward northern born you're also going to be telling in the matter of rain potentially for you in the next day or so which has more recent the structure across thailand as well we can't we see where it is map wise because see where bangkok is and this thailand and meanwhile increasingly on the edges sumatra where the cloud in the rain are rebuilding south of all this and winter carries on not so much of a vengeance di but with another frontal system coming in particularly to tasmania
6:03 pm
you don't see much apart from the streaky cloud as a clue so the temperatures are 14 mark on tuesday recently quite day but increasing cloud and wind coming to western tasmania 22 in the sunshine in perth is fairly typical it's warming up still more wednesday but the temperatures are dropping for adelaide and for hobart anybody agree a sober look at the clouds that's a frontal system coming in yet more wind and rain. like cats are always and experience economy class like never before cattle. always

going places together. and you're watching out to 0 these are the top stories right now donald trump has once again insisted washington is not looking for regime change in iran and made a comment today after iran's foreign minister made a surprise visit to the g. 7 summit where he met with france's president iran's president has indicated he would be willing to talk to the americans if it further the interests of his country and donald trump says chinese officials call the american trade negotiator on sunday and want to resume talks to resolve their trade dispute stock markets across asia have closed in the red after the trade war escalated in the past few days and 3 israeli airstrikes have reportedly had

a palestinian groups compound in the lebanese town of qusayr near syria's border it comes a day after an israeli drone crashed in beirut another exploded before landing. iran says it has deployed its most sophisticated warship to provide security for its ships in the gulf of aden that's one of the world's busiest shipping routes iran has also announced that it has sold the oil that was on board a tanker that was detained by british forces enter baltar appear on didn't say who bought the crude the seizure of the agent area one led to a standoff between iran and the u.k. let's bring in our correspondent who joins us now from tehran also what more do we know about this this naval destroyer. well we believe that this is pretty routine it happens every 3 to 4 months a new destroyer is sent out and the one that's been in service for 34 months returns to iran but the fact that it's been announced could be significant we know
6:06 pm
that this is a brand new destroyer has more capabilities it's faster and also that it's made but it's also great speculation as to why they've announced this now this could be related to that because no one knows what route it will take but the fact that they destroyed has been sent to the gulf of aden it could mean that it comes down the canal and then. to iran and this is significant because we know that the united states requested to seize this iranian vessel and iran warned them against that but also we also know that the united states is trying to put together this naval coalition for what they say is to protect navigation through the strait of her most in the gulf on the other side of the arabian peninsula so far the united kingdom in the strait you have joined that coalition and they are increased tensions iran still holds a british flag tanker that they seized in the strait of hormuz but iran has said that someone has bought this oil and the owner of that world decided where the tanker goes next that's now that's very strange to some because iran has been very
6:07 pm
secretive about who's bought this or that and where it's heading so there are many possible routes it could go down the suez canal it could go back. around africa back to iran but also the speculation it could go through the black sea through to the caspian sea and dock in the north of iran so right now we still don't know where it's headed but we know that this destroy this iranian destroyers going to the gulf of aden with this increased tensions in the region with the 5th american 5th fleet in the region to u.k. warships in the region and any miscalculation could lead to a conflict. with the latest from tehran i said. it's cornell what's happening at the g 7 matthew prize is a senior fellow at the atlantic council's eurasia center and global energy center he joins us from istanbul let's pick up on iran donald trump u.s. president this morning that he did know that job in serif the foreign minister of iraq was was coming that's not the same thing as saying he was being consulted so
6:08 pm
do you think that this has had the effect it. was going for. i think it did have that effect i think emanuel objective was to show president trump that he's a bit i say he's quite isolated in comparison with the rest of the g 7 actors president claimed during his press conference earlier today when he was with president el-sisi that not only not only did president mccrone mention the. minister zarif was coming but also president trump claimed that mccrone asked his permission that is at odds as you suggested with what senior white house staff were leaking to the press when they said actually it was a surprise that. showed up so i think the message has gotten through to president trump and by claiming he was consulted i think president trump maybe in damage limitation mode so let me ask you this there is
6:09 pm
a peter nichols wrote this in the atlantic this is a quote he says there are in effect 2 different summits underway one that is happening and president donald trump's mind and another that is actually happening on the ground there says summit that trump is trying to will into existence and the summit that is unfolding in real time and often there will be comments that come from donald trump that are and direct opposition to the other leaders there at the summit how are they managing this summit with his presence. that is a perfect quote and it underscores how differently president trump deals with foreign policy compared with the traditional way these g 7 countries the world's leading democracies the most powerful economic a liberal market economic democracies have worked together so the idea of the g 7 is that the world's leading market democracies have a common vision of of what should happen in the world economic political social they get together once a year at the g.
6:10 pm
7 summit and they coordinate they chat they prepare a communique that outlines what they agreed and they conduct multilateral diplomacy president trump hates small. lateral diplomacy and we're seeing that now it's president trump believes that the u.s. can maximize its own interests by isolating individual countries and individual leaders leaning on them squeezing them using a combination of threats and insults on the one hand in charge on the other hand to squeeze out every possible concession from them including the u.s. is closest allies and so that's what's happening when we see how president trump staff has complained that president mccrone has put on the agenda with a term on the u.s. side ancillary issues like climate change will absolutely be around the world in fact if i can add to that it was just reported that donald trump skipped the working session today on climate. yet there you go yes so he is simply trying to use the g.
6:11 pm
7 summit as a tool to further his america 1st foreign policy and that gets him in trouble because the u.s. china trade war and those relations that that is not a specific agenda item at the g. 7 china is not part of the g. 7 but but the trade war is something that's looming over the talks and as boris johnson suggested gently the u.k. is not in favor of a trade war of tariffs so president trump is trying to pressure boris johnson and the others to say trade war is good they're saying it's not good at all so a president trump is also trying to reform the g 7 such that it no longer is simply a forum for the leading democracies and that's by bringing are suggesting russian president putin should be reinvited so he's really out of step with the rest of his allies senior fellow at the atlantic council matthew prize that thank you very much matthew. the u.n. says the worsening humanitarian situation in northern syria could affect at least 3000000 people russian backed government forces have been shelling and launching

. china's currency forced to an 11 year low as the trade war between beijing and the u.s. deepens. ecuador tightens its immigration rules making it more difficult for thousands of venezuelans fleeing hardship back home. lives lost homes destroyed or abandoned we're in syria to meet the families caught in the line of fire. so we begin this news hour with the g. 7 meeting in the french city of beer its leaders are wrapping up the summit that's been dominated by the u.s. china trade war and a surprise visit by iran's top diplomat president donald trump is once again insisted that he's not seeking regime change in iran but that was too soon to meet but that it was too soon to meet iran's foreign minister mohammad job and zarif meanwhile trump said that china has asked to restart trade talks in response to

another series of tariff increases he's proposed that they'll be revived shortly and there's been a breakthrough in the u.s. the dispute with france over taxes on american technology companies they've agreed on a draft proposal that will be put to heads of state later on monday let's go live now to the g. 7 summit our diplomatic editor james bays is in beirut so james president trump says that he and other g 7 leaders have quote come to a conclusion more or less on iran what does he mean. well i think he means that for now diplomacy can be tried the u.s. has had a maximum pressure policy a policy of very very tough sanctions to try and bring iran to its knees we've seen a fresh initiative in recent days by the french and president macron including inviting the iranian foreign minister here to be writs president trump and this was
6:51 pm
the key thing says he supports that initiative he says he gave his permission for zarif to come he was going to meet him self at this stage but the u.s. i think making it clear that there is room for diplomacy now clearly there is no breakthrough in just moments ago president trump was with chancellor merkel of germany and she said things were slowly moving forward i think that puts it clearly in perspective for us parts worth also seeing what's been said in tehran because president rouhani has been speaking and he believes there is a 2 month window now for diplomacy. i believe that in order to secure our country's national interests any instrument should be used if i know that going to a meeting and visiting a person will help the country get developed and solve the people's problems i will not miss it the principle is the national interests of our nation and james what's

the latest on the us china trade war china's foreign ministry said earlier on monday that it was ready to take more steps to protect its interests if the u.s. moves ahead with an acting more tariffs. that is a tough sounding comment but at the same time we've been hearing from president trump that the chinese have picked up the phone to the u.s. side and said that they're prepared to talk so i think it's a little bit like iran we don't have any breakthrough atoll in the whole fundamental problems and differences of their parts past a window for negotiation again on the chinese on the chinese side let's listen to what president trump had to say. i mean business they want to be able to feel it's very important. what it was really a lot of things that happened and it's why resolution is

a great leader he is and it's going to be great it's going to be great this is going to be great for the world you know. he's able to do things that other people are unable to so we will call and we're going to start really shortly to. negotiate see what happens but i think we're going to make it. all now another trade dispute that one between the u.s. and france potentially over the digital services tax which targets u.s. tech companies president trump of course had said he might retaliate by taxing french wine we hear that the french finance minister and the u.s. treasury secretary of been meeting it looks like they might have come up with something whether it's actually a proper deal to deal with this or some sort of farge we believe there's some sort of mechanism president trump saying that something may be signed soon on that 2 other quick things to tell you about adrian here at the g. 7 climate they've been discussing this morning notable president trump was not in

the u.s. chair the other 6 leaders was that were there and he was not there for that meeting in the last thing is we know exactly where next year's g 7 is going to be the u.s. is the host president trump was announced to be in miami the controversial bit is he's floated the idea it might be in his own resort our diplomatic at the james bays reporting live there from the g 7 fronts many thanks mark shanahan is an associate professor and head of department for politics and international relations at the university of reading he joins us now from reading in the u.k. good to have you with us president trump has praised china's president xi on twitter calling him a great leader adding that talks are continuing what do you make of president trump's performance at the g 7 he talks tough before he gets there but appears to soften his rhetoric when he's actually face to face with other leaders. this is very much the janus face presence that we often see from trump he talks tough

because he's talking to a home audience the audience that may get him reelected in the united states next year and it's very much that domestic consumption he's not a great foreign policy predecessor president he is not a great negotiator so when he actually gets in this kind of multilateral talks he tends to go a little bit quieter he goes a little bit softer he listens a little bit more to the likes of mo call macron and the rest are around the table there and he likes to be loved and therefore he doesn't want to make terrible gaffes nor does he want to go out very much on a limb on his own so he's always quieter at this kind of made thing right talking about not wanting to make gaffes what are we to make of the mixed messages we're getting from president trump particularly over russia. this is been a great g 7 for peace in what we're saying here at the meeting in beirut it's not actually that much you know say they will always talk
6:56 pm
a good game there is no communique at the end of this meeting but they always talk about how they are working together actually the g. 7 is probably less unified than it's ever been trump is very much an outlier we don't know what to make of his relationship with person or what hold putin has over him on the one hand he is very strong in attacking russian influence particularly within america but on the other hand he wants to welcome him back and extend this to the g. 8 he says some people are asking for a g. 8 he doesn't actually have to specify who those some people are and i suspect they're not the other 6 leaders sitting around the table as you say russia not represented at the g 7 neither is brazil does it matter. you're looking at the g 7 which essentially is the majority of the world's global wealth and the majority of the world's global trait brazil isn't in that category
6:57 pm
norris russia russia talks a very good game but we are not talking of the empires of the past it is the struggling economy the one you might say why are they here are china and why is china not surpassed at this group at the moment. for brazil. rose sits beside trump as one of those strong populist leaders and trump doesn't want to alienate him but there is a strong pushback from the rest of the global leaders about the environmental destruction that pulse narrow it's largely causing within his own country so again we get these mixed messages we get this lack of unity and while there is a lack of unity that won't actually be a particularly strong action against bolton are you saying that it's not a good g 7 but at least it hasn't ended in acrimony like last year's and president trump appears at the moment to be policing it through to the end. though not sitting in on the key talks this morning we have the g 6 plus one at the moment so

you could talk about the europeans the canadians the japanese all being together on this and trump still being the outlier he's not a natural diplomats he doesn't like multilateral settings he prefers the art of the deal that comes from bilateral conversations and that's where things that worked well for him on this meeting he's had these little acolytes boris johnson standing one step down on the stairs looking very very pleased to be there and to get the nice words from trump that again will play well in america. everything now is about the trump campaign for 2020 setting the meeting next year in miami and again will play very very well with the trump voters and that's what he wants to achieve look at how he presents himself he is front and center he's saying that sharif was only at that meeting because of his permission it wasn't his permission to get it was an invitation from who is hosting this mixing so trump likes to feel very important

likes to feel loved and it's just about got away with it this time around barbara good to talk to you many thanks did not try to hand there in reading stock markets across asia closed shop trade down on monday on fears over the trying to u.s. trade war tokyo's benchmark nikkei index fell by more than 2 percent china's currency the yuan dropped to an 11 year low against the dollar scott hi there reports from beijing. asian markets sharply down on monday in this escalating trade war we a tit for tat tariffs being gone back and forth between the united states and china announcements on friday markets futures for those markets were sharply down over the weekend they proved to be true monday sharply down across asia now futures in america also look like they're going to be down those markets haven't opened yet but indications are the open lower but not as low as we thought over the weekend because the futures had softened a little bit something else it's quite interesting on monday the chinese currency

the yuan is down to a year low now this is reaction obviously to the market that the trade war that's been going on between these 2 countries now we know that they're supposed to be further negotiations next month in september but no details have been released about that so there's concern just where the next step is where this trade war goes from here at a concern to that we have a global slowdown in the economy so there's concern that this trade war could also prompt a global recession iran says that has deployed its most sophisticated warship to provide security for its vessels in the gulf of aden one of the busiest shipping routes in the world iran has also announced that it has sold the oil that was on board a tanker that was detained by british forces in gibraltar but to iran hasn't said who's pulled the crude c.z. of the one led to a standoff between iran and the u.k. let's go now.
