down one on one east meets the grandmas who is saving the schools finally getting an education on al-jazeera. boris johnson loses his majority in the u.k. parliament has one of his m.p.'s the facts ahead of another crucial breck's a vote. hello i'm barbara starr you're watching al-jazeera live from london also coming up on the program hurrican dorrian grows in size but weakens as it batters the bahamas with dangerous winds and a life threatening storm surge un experts find potential war crimes on all sides in the yemen conflict and say the u.s. britain and france may be complicit and why america's love affair with e-books
10:01 pm
appears to be ending. thank you for joining us we begin with another momentous day in british politics just a few hours ago prime minister boris johnson lost his parliamentary majority when one of his m.p.'s defected to the pro e.u. liberal democrats johnson has vowed to leave the e.u. on october 31st even if it means crashing out without a deal but dozens of m.p.'s including many from his own conservative party want to stop that they've introduced a motion to prevent a no deal breaks it which will be voted on in a couple of hours if they are successful johnson has suggested he will then push for a snap election where we're going to be live outside parliament in just a moment 1st though this report from needs bark. britain's democracy is at war. with itself. as protest as march to westminster.
10:02 pm
returned from the summer recess used to seize control of parliamentary business and block forest. m.p.'s including prominent figures in johnson's own conservative party have joined forces with opposition m.p.'s to prevent the country leaving the e.u. without a deal on october the 31st they want to pass an emergency motion later this evening to take control of the parliamentary timetable and extend the brags that deadline one conservative m.p. defected to the opposition liberal democrats meaning johnson no longer has a majority in parliament if m.p.c. do pass a bill to prevent a no deal exit johnson says he'll have no choice but to push to hold a general election enough is enough the country wants this done and they want the referendum respected we are negotiating a deal and there are a total i know i heard it i know i'm probably getting
10:03 pm
a deal we will leave by october 31st the circumstances reality or no deal breaks it's being called reckless by the opposition labor leader no deal mr speaker will main food shortage is reduced medical supplies and chaos at our ports not me not me saying that the government's own leaked analysis. and it warns of chaos all across the board john his decision to shut down parliament for a month beginning next week outraged his opponents they say it leaves no time to debate breaks it increasing the chances of a no deal departure johnson supporters see no deal is an important negotiating position with the e.u. but many conservative party rebels don't have ready to. to risk their jobs to prevent it there are lots of pressures on me. and i've been threatened with the selection and will be weighing up the loyalty against the national interest this is
10:04 pm
this is painful and hard but i think we have the rights it has distorted british politics uniting all the potence dividing old alliances the country is careering towards a new brakes a climax with a question this confounded the country and the continent is whether we're approaching a breakthrough for knowledge or simply another cliffhanger. even if johnson loses to the opposition and rebels from his party this evening he still needs the backing of most m.p.'s to trigger a snap election. opposition parties and now weighing up the risks of a possible vote for now the battle lines are drawn the government and parliament are fighting for the right to determine britain's breaks in future leave barca al-jazeera london well jenna hall is live for us in westminster joe now already the prime minister has lost his majority in parliament and that may not even end up being the most important thing that happens today to him and the government to talk
10:05 pm
us through what the next hours might look like. well the debate in parliament is raging as we speak the crucial vote proximately 2 hours away now and some pretty heated scenes inside the house of commons conservative party rebels have joined in the so-called rebel alliance bringing this motion in the 1st place who will vote against their own government later being accused of standing our against in their attempt to subvert the people's will the democracy in the referendum and try to interrupt boris johnson's promise of a no deal if no deal can be reached on the 31st of october and john bercow the speaker his decision being challenged in this debate to allow the debate in the vote to go ahead he says he will carry on unperturbed do or die he said echoing boris johnson's own promise to bring the brakes it to pass on october the
10:06 pm
31st do or die let me bring in my guest now craig dillon is a digital strategist founder of westminster digit digital you ran boris johnson's digital campaign as part of his leadership campaign strategy what's the strategy now do you think craig the strategy is very complicated at the moment there's a lot of things at stake we don't really know what's going to happen the power is now going into the hands of parliament so what we've seen is there's a few options left but the question is what happens tonight is really going to change other things do you think they counted on losing their majority the conservatives quite so quickly definite say quickly but i think they were prepared for everything and i think one of the big issues that we face with that is that it's really put up some barriers you know the majority has already tiny and you know as you saw treason they really struggled a lot of that stuff so now having not even have a majority still is a big problem and with that tiny majority coming to office just for 5 weeks or so ago it must have been pretty clear to everybody that an election was close to what
10:07 pm
it always the strategy doing to wind up and. these to get them to block no deal to wind up brussels to get them to refuse to negotiate and then set up an election that essentially pits the people against parliament and the e.u. i don't think boris ever went into this wanting an election and none of the parties are prepared for elections right now you know none of the in shelters in place i don't think that was the goal i think one of the goals was that we would be forced into a no deal breaks it by you know the e.u. not to go shaking things up but i don't think anyone wants an election which is why we're seeing things going a little bit shaky and a little bit we don't really know what's happening and we're starting to lose lose control of it a little bit so we what was that was there a sign of that sense of losing control this afternoon when boris johnson fielded questions many of them from his own employees and did so in a slightly stumbling way he looked quite unsure of himself from time to time was that a sign do you think of boris johnson losing control the script not going entirely
10:08 pm
the way he planned out i think course evolution's control he always knows least but i think this is a very very tough time and he knows there's a lot of pressure on this he sees as his personal judy to deliver breaks it and i think these hurdles are being put up in his way he sees as more of a challenge than anything that he's sort of too worried about i think he believes that we can get through all of this. really about losing a general election i just don't think he wants to have one right now the public certainly don't want to have a general election if you're going reliever there thanks very much boris johnson's digital strategist there well he may not want an election that people may not want to the election something though he's going to have to give and quite possibly this side of october 31st back to you john hall outside westminster thank you were you could hear the protests there while the jono was speaking and there have been major street protests right across the u.k. and my hayward sent this update from parliament square. all the protests really
10:09 pm
goes to show that this is no longer just then these do you have rank said there are no deal right so it is. about austerity it is about boris johnson and it is also about the future of britain what you hear a lot here the driving force for getting people out onto the streets is the word democracy they say that the punk suspension a parliament is simply undemocratic one wasn't told me that they believe that boris johnson is simply trashing the democracy will their boys is behind for that very loud down the road there is accounted administration taking place of people who believe the practice is a good idea it just goes to show that 3 years more than 3 years after the referendum this issue is still very divisive. hurrican dorrian is inching away from the bahamas after slamming into the island nation as a category 5 storm officials say they're in the midst of
