barracks for months and some for years in fact 2 of the children we interviewed have been held there without charge for 3 years but many of the children we interviewed described trying to escape boko haram attacks when they were arrested and as folks of iran suspects they have been held generally without charge without any opportunity to go to court or to see a judge only one of the children we interviewed ever had a chance to say that they thought might have been an attorney there held without any contact with the outside world in appalling conditions children described cells with 250 year 300 teenie asked them to a 10 by 10 meter area hundreds of detainees sharing a single toilet with overwhelming stench detainees fainting from the heat and in fact sometimes bodies being taken from. we acknowledge that the nigerian

military has released over 2000 children and the rate of detention according to un statistics has dropped significantly between 20172018 if there are no children there now that's wonderful news but we really encourage nigerian authorities to open the barracks to the united nations so that they come can come and verify whether or not any children are there and in any case where urging nigerian authorities to sign what's called the handover protocol to ensure that when children are apprehended by the military that there swiftly transfer to civilian child protection authorities so that instead of languishing for months or years in military detention they can be reunited reunited with their families and get the rehabilitation of the community high point that they need let me jump in if i can a so fall from what you've seen those children who are detained obviously are going any kind of derives its allies ation process. but as i mentioned most of the

children that we interviewed appeared to be both victims not boko haram fighters none of the children we interviewed expressed any sympathies with boko haram in fact some of them felt that the boko haram commanders should be dealt with by severely. but the children described no programs while they were in detention no education so i was just a time to really do authorities tell you what is ok why these kids being held them if they're not undergoing any of the radicalization because most of them may not even have anything to do with boko haram what was the official reason for holding kids then. that's an excellent question as i mentioned virtue very few of these children are ever charged with a crime and so our evidence shows that there is you know very little evidence or weak evidence to hold them in the 1st place we approached the during authorities 2 months ago with our preliminary findings asking them for comment and to date we
