far more attention paid to all of these incidents especially when they take place at a rally attended by the president of afghanistan in the run up to a controversial election like this but i think it is true to say that there has been an increase in violent attacks in events all around afghanistan the concern for the authorities here is that you know we're still 2 weeks away from the election is it going to be get worse or are they with the deployment of thousands of security personnel as they are deploying around the country going to be able to keep a lid on this and be able to give afghanistan at least a chance of a free and fair election at least in the roughly harf of the country that the government seems to be in control of there just talk us through sort of broader security concerns as the run up to elections starts because we were talking to you earlier you were telling us that literally thousands tens of thousands of troops security personnel are to be deployed in the run up to the election. that's right

they're putting out something like 72000 security personnel from police paramilitaries the army are being deployed across afghanistan to keep these polling stations open the concern is of course just how much of afghanistan the government is still in control of it certainly the security situation is far worse than it was in the last election back in 2014 in that election the government was able to open 7000 polling stations across the country they had been hoping for a similar number this time but it is quite telling that already they have conceded that only around $5000.00 polling stations will be opened come polling day and of course polling day is still 2 weeks away. rob the taliban always seems to increase its attacks and its threats before presidential elections in afghanistan just think this is likely then to affect voter turnout on the ground. that's the concern

especially in the areas where the taliban are in control you know they have said told people to boycott this poll they didn't want this poll to go ahead it was their firm expectation in fact that this election day would be postponed if they had signed a preliminary peace agreement with the americans that as part of that agreement this poll would be pushed back possibly for some power shape sharing arrangement to be brought in so just as the afghan government is committed that now this peace deal isn't going to be signed and that they will go ahead with this election to boost their legitimacy and give the people of afghanistan afghanistan at least a chance of a fair election the taliban seem to be as firmly committed that it won't go ahead and of course there are much more areas of the country that are controlled by the taliban and they do carry out so they make these threats which they do carry out
