alternative view of the world today. on al-jazeera. hello again welcome back to international weather forecast well expect some showers here across parts of northern turkey the front that's going to cause those showers is coming over the black sea right now with a line of clouds and we're going to be seeing a drop in temperature for ancora coming down to about $1000.00 degrees once the front goes through we are going to be seeing some active weather just to the east that is going to be probably some severe thunderstorms and probably snow in the higher elevations down towards the south though plenty of heat we're going to sing baghdad at about $43.00 on saturday and over here towards crutchley we are going to be watching some potential rain coming into the forecast not on sunday but expect maybe monday or tuesday as we go towards beginning of next week as well where here across doha expect to see very humid mornings but the good news is by the time we get to the afternoon things are really going to be drying out and that will be the
3:47 pm
trend over the next few days so 41 degrees here on saturday at 36 and really staying the same as we go towards sunday maybe some more clouds down across oman as well as yemen and speaking of clouds it is going to be clouds along the coast here across parts of south africa over the next few days cape town you will see those clouds as well we don't expect to see a very warm temps or few at about 17 degrees but it will be warm up here towards johanna's very with plenty of sun a 29 in durban and about 26 degrees for you. stories generate fountains of headlines. separate the spin from the facts the misinformation from the journalism with the listening post on al-jazeera. and just 20. 1 from a summit. almost part of the effects of salt on. many

3:50 pm
developments for us here. from cairo to alexandria to men sora anger and resentment filled egypt's streets people protested against president abdul fattah el-sisi calling for him to resign from known corruption allegations and a reassigned they flooded into cairo's to his square before police dispersed. crowd arresting some the square was made famous in 2011 during the egyptian revolution that toppled former president hosni mubarak the fact that it is a people have been able to actually enter to harry square is in itself an incredible achievement for the people in order to try to protest against sisi so it seems that there is this bubble that's growing this tension is growing and it seems that momentum is increasing and minute by minute egyptians are frustrated about corruption but it was a businessman in spain that storks the fire calling for the protests muhammad ali started posting videos on you tube and facebook and early september he leaked
3:51 pm
cissie and his military wasted millions of dollars of public money on palaces villas and hotels he said he knew because he built them i wonder why spend a huge amount of money building these houses i never understood his decision the problem was that cities wife didn't want to sleep in the same home when mubarak's wife stayed taken low level corruption to a new level i built 5 villas for theses a palace for the president and a military camp in cairo the slap to the one week ago speaking at a youth summit in cairo president says he did not directly address the accusations of corruption against him and his army but he did say this. how much do you think a day of operations in sinai costs we don't talk about this then we see someone varing to come out and defame the army someone who wants to shock you panic you someone who dares to try to disparage the great value of our great army when cici
3:52 pm
little military coup of president mohammed morsi in 2013 he outlawed all unauthorized protests a government crackdown followed with tens of thousands of egyptians arrested including journalists like al jazeera is own mahmoud hussein who has not been imprisoned more than 1000 days egyptian government and cry. any group has ruthlessly this sort of like a people are prepared to take to the streets tonight i think speaks to the enormous frustration the enormous anger that. actions due to words. from an egyptian whistleblower posting you tube videos the internet has galvanized egyptians frustrations and now move to the streets ballasts. while responding to the protests human rights watch issued a warning saying president security agencies have time and again time and time again used brutal force to crush peaceful protests the authorities should recognize
3:53 pm
that the world is watching and take all necessary steps to avoid a repetition of past atrocities all back in 20 levon activists on the streets of egypt sought to change the course of the country's history the terrier square revolution forced longtime media hosni mubarak to step down the fall of mubarak paved the way for the muslim brotherhoods mahmoud morsi to become egypt's 1st democratically elected president in 2012 but a year later mass protests took place against morsi and he was overthrown in a military coup led by general abdel fattah see the current president says he went on to become president while morsi died in june this year while standing trial has seen since strengthened his grip on power journalists have been arrested including those working for this network rights groups accused security forces a frequent abuses a crackdown on dissent. let's all speak to mohamed el masry who is chair of the
3:54 pm
media and journalism program at the institute for graduate studies here in the studio with us thank you so much for coming in mohammed so just how significant and important the protests that we saw on friday in egypt across several cities given everything that's happened in the country in the past few years exist past few years in the violent crackdown that we see how significant are these demonstrations i think they're very significant not in the sense that these protests are automatically going to lead to cc's forced removal we don't know that yet it's too early but there are significant in the sense that this is a a people a shop that has gone through brutal repression the c.c. regime killed hundreds of protesters in the streets in broad daylight on video in 2013 you mentioned some of that in your in your lead up so the fact that people are risking quite literally risking their lives by going out into the streets is highly significant and i think it speaks to the extent to which people are fed up they're
3:55 pm
fed up with cc's authoritarianism and they're fed up with the economy. the egyptian government has crashed any protests ruthlessly in the past we didn't see any of that on friday or perhaps we haven't seen it yet what does this suggests to you the fact that the protests were able to go on without the violence that we've seen in the past the past the crackdown that we've seen from security forces in the past well it's probably too early to speculate i don't want to get ahead of the game i think we're likely to see a continuation of protests we have to remember that the mubarak regime employed different strategies at times they were relatively more calm they allowed people to sort of vent their their anger and at times they cracked down so we'll have to wait and see what the sisi government does over the longer term right now but one thing that some analysts have suggested as a possibility is that maybe the security apparatus is. and completely on board with c.c.
3:56 pm
maybe they almost want to let people vent vent out their anger one thing that we know is that there is a fracture within the you know the power structure in egypt this is been this is played out over the last couple of years sisi has rivals from not only within the military but within the interior ministry and so that's something that will have to be so is it the case in amman it that it's the internal fracture within the gyptian military within the regime that could be the biggest threat to c.c. rather than the mass demonstrations. well i think they both work hand in hand i mean it was the mass demonstrations that brought down mubarak but there needed to be people on the inside there that were either fed up or that were willing to sacrifice mark so we'll have to see when at what point the military is willing to sacrifice sisi the demonstrations of course came after this. businessman and not to monitor his presence of corruption his contract and military contract as well how
3:57 pm
big of a threat. and you know how much momentum is there for these demonstrations until you mamma died is probably the most popular man in egypt right now millions of people have watched the videos of his hashtags. have gone viral this is something that is a legitimate threat to the c.c. government if it wasn't a legitimate threat and sisi wouldn't have come out and responded directly to mohammed ali at last week's youth conference that was unprecedented for sisi to be put on the defensive like that inside of egypt by an egyptian why have the allegations that mohammed ali has made. transfixed egyptians so much i mean they have been allegations of corruption in the past against sisi and the military why why this time is it resonating more with people you think yeah i think there are a number of reasons perhaps i mean on the one hand he hasn't said anything that is super groundbreaking i mean egyptians know that there's corruption and inside
3:58 pm
inside the government apparatus right there's no surprises there but the fact that he's an insider that he worked with the military for about 15 years the fact that he has intricate details and also the fact that the economy is increasingly spiraling out of control for the average egyptian the average egyptian has been completely lost in the dust poverty is about is that about 33 percent according to the egyptian government that is about a 3rd of egyptians live on just over a dollar a day if we use the more realistic figures where the world bank and we're talking more like 50 to 60 percent of egyptians who are living in acute poverty so people almost wanted they were looking for some kind of a spark and muhammad ali has given that to them i'll be interesting to see how the situation develops of course thank you so much mohamed el masri from the. graduate studies thank you for joining us on this. in other world news the u.s. is sending more troops to saudi arabia and the united arab emirates to boost defenses in the face of what it calls iranian aggression the deployment follows the
3:59 pm
attack on key oil facilities in saudi arabia which the u.s. has been aimed at anyone i can every course it was a hastily arranged news conference at the pentagon following a meeting of the national security council the secretary of defense announce the further deployment of u.s. forces to the middle east the intention he said to bolster the defense systems of saudi arabia and the united arab emirates the president has approved the deployment of u.s. forces which will be defensive in nature and primarily focused on air and missile defense we will also work to accelerate the delivery of military equipment to the kingdom of saudi arabia and the u.a.e. to enhance their ability to defend themselves it's not clear how many troops the u.s. will provide but the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff emphasize this was a defensive deployment and indicated the u.s. would ask its allies to offer this support we're contributing to saudi arabia's defense we would be looking as the secretary said for other international partners
4:00 pm
to also contribute to show your abuse defense. the secretary of defense continued to insist iran was responsible for the attacks on saudi oil installations last weekend brushing off repeated iranian denials of involvement but at the same time confirming that the u.s. forensic team working with saudi experts had still not concluded its investigation . news of the deployment closely followed president trump's decision to impose new sanctions on iran. at the end of the day as president trump hosts a dinner for the prime minister of australia it appears that the u.s. economic pressure will be buttressed by a show of military force even if the stage is declared to be of a defensive nature mike hanna al-jazeera washington let's speak to our correspondent in tehran now assad big assad how will iran be viewing this u.s. decision to send more troops to saudi arabia.
