wall it seems that the saudi and u.s. positions of very much aligned. both the saudis and the u.s. are talking about defensive posture and even despite those strong words from pompei o they seem to have backed off a little bit from that and her taking a stand back stance however the u.s. has made a commitment although it's really a minimal commitment compared to the range of options the u.s. could have deployed in response to that attack on that saudi oil system so you've got about several 100 troops we don't know whether those are simply technicians or whether those are actual fighting soldiers where there will also be a missile and air defense systems deployed there by the u.s. so presumably some u.s. experts there and that creates a situation a tense situation where if iran or the these in yemen were to attack saudi arabia now there's a possibility that they could kill an american that would draw the u.s.
12:01 am
further and deeper into this conflict so tensions have only risen since this whole thing is began despite the fact that both the u.s. and the saudis say they are in a defensive posture at least until the end of the investigation into exactly where those attacks originated john hendren live for us in washington d.c. thank you jon well for more on this we can speak to ronnie corey has a nonresident fellow at harvard kennedy school and he joins us now on skype from boston mr corey having listened to it we didn't hear anything today that we haven't had before necessarily. that's right and that little bit on the saudi government have a couple of problems here 'd he has very little credibility because he for 23 weeks he was lying and repeating lying when he was killed and turkey about a year ago now and involved in a big inefficient cover up which was later dropped because the saudis admitted that he died and they kept lying about how it all happened 2nd of all the saudis don't
12:02 am
have any credibility in terms of investigating these kinds of things if they're investigating where the tack came against there are so today i hope their investigation is more efficient than their investigation into the killing of jim ussher object so they have to real serious problems there on the 3rd one is that they have clearly. shown that they don't want to get into a war with iran because they are neither technically it's capable of doing it nor do they have the political will to do it on the 1st problem they have is that they've been fighting this war in yemen mercilessly bombing and killing people in yemen tens of thousands of people have died in yemen and the is so it is of them this 'd was a direct aid of the u.s. and britain and other members of the so-called international community so to call on the same international community to prevent people attacking saudi arabia has very little credibility so the saudis really are standing on very very send ground
12:03 am
here but having said all that nobody should attack saudi also says that it was a crime and should not happen and that we should find out who did it and prevent it from happening again at the same time as the attacks. in yemen and also the strangle strangling campaign of sanctions and pressure on the iranians that this so disciplined prodding along with the israelis and them it out is to bring iran to its knees prevented from doing business or exporting oil this has to stop to so that's the wider context that we have to look at to understand the weakness of the saudi position here but mr corey i want to come back to you saying that this investigation doesn't have a huge amount of credibility now we just saw the saudi ministry of defense some of that drone wreckage just a few days ago and they said that was evidence of iranian involvement but then it was a bad today saying the bad investigation is still very much ongoing to determine the source so what kind of definitive evidence do you think they can actually provide and is that likely at all. i think it's unlikely they were that there will be
12:04 am
definitive evidence showing who organized this who ordered it who prepared it and who carried out the attack there's no doubt i think in anybody's mind including mine that there is some kind of iranian involvement with the hotels with people in iraq with other people who are critical of so doing a bit for all the criminal things that so these have done in yemen and other places there's no doubt that the iranians have been involved in and in some way but the saudi statements have been very precise and they haven't said this attack originated in and was organized and were sent from from iran they're very careful not to say that because that they just don't don't have the evidence so the bigger question again is people need to look beyond just this one attack and who did it and to stop these kinds of things from happening they need to resolve this wider ideological and military battle that's taking place with the so it isn't without israelis and americans on one side and the iranians and hezbollah hutus and other
12:05 am
people on the other side that's the big picture and most of the international political statements and the media reporting refuses to accept that this is a battle that has to be addressed from the perspective of both people and then this idea that the u.s. and iran might come to war i think is pretty nonsensical neither of them want a war and this is not going to happen ronnie correa nonresident thing a fellow at the harvard kennedy school thank you for joining us on al-jazeera well as we've been discussing the u.s. is sending more troops to saudi arabia and the united arab emirates to base defenses against what it calls it rain in aggression the deployment of follows that attack on the saudi oil facilities our mike hanna reports. it was a hastily arranged news conference at the pentagon following a meeting of the national security council the secretary of defense announced the further deployment of u.s. forces to the middle east the intention he said to bolster the defense systems of
12:06 am
saudi arabia and the united arab emirates the president has approved the deployment of u.s. forces which will be defensive in nature and primarily focused on air and missile defense we will also work to accelerate the delivery of military equipment to the kingdom of saudi arabia and the u.a.e. to enhance their ability to defend themselves it's not clear how many troops the u.s. will provide but the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff emphasized this was a defensive deployment and indicated the u.s. would ask its allies to offer their support were contributing to shoddy reviews the french we would be looking as the secretary said for other international partners to also contribute to show your abuse defense. the secretary of defense continued to insist iran was responsible for the attacks on saudi oil installations last weekend brushing off repeated iranian denials of involvement but at the same time confirming that the u.s. forensic team working with saudi experts had still not concluded its investigation
12:07 am
. news of the deployment closely followed president trump's decision to impose new sanctions on iran at the end of the day as president trump hosts a dinner for the prime minister office trailer it appears that the u.s. economic pressure will be buttressed by a show of military force even if at this stage it is declared to be offered defensive nature mike hanna al-jazeera washington. well there's plenty more ahead for you on this news hour including donald trump accused of political impropriety following a whistleblower as allegations about the president's dealings with foreign powers plus in sports the super bowl champions get rid of antonio brown less than 2 weeks after signing him piece it will be here with back story.

now the 1st ever youth summit on climate change is taking place in new york the summit was opened by a 16 year old swedish campaign aggressor turn bag who inspired a day of global environmental protests led by young people on friday organizers said 4000000 people of all ages took part while the wives. tribute to young activists everywhere just a day millions of people across the globe. marched and demand those real climate action especially young people. we showed the we we are united and that we young people are unstoppable. about it here's a james bays is following developments at the united nations in new york and joins us now live from there james for a young woman who started such a massive global movement presa comes across as incredibly modest what do you think it is that made her message come through at this point because we've been hearing
12:09 am
from scientists on campaigners for years. absolutely i was talking to the head of the u.n. environment program about this that someone who heads a u.n. agency with hundreds and hundreds of staff who deal with these sort of issues you've got campaign groups like friends of the earth and greenpeace scientists activists working on this for years and certainly the words of one teenager have started a youth movement which you just saw in the last 24 hours has started people protest around the world on president a number of people in countries around the world coming on to the streets the idea i think that the u.n. hope is that they can leverage that that's why they're having a youth summit today the youth who led those global protests taking of one of the big holes here in the u.n. leverage it to monday because monday is the day that really counts monday is when the youth will be replaced by world leaders who will be under pressure from those
12:10 am
used to actually change their positions and take further action and james what do we actually expect to hear on monday from world leaders who are coming. well and that's the big question certainly the u.n. secretary general has said to those world leaders when he's invited them don't come with a speech come with something new a concrete plan of action and we certainly know there will be heads of state starting off a number of heads of state throughout the day and certainly some big names at the very start of that climate summit we have chancellor merkel we have president macron prime minister modi among the 1st speakers but it's some of the other countries that are more skeptical we need to watch countries like australia like brazil given what's been going on in the amazon and of course the 2 biggest emitters so you there you have china they are not pressed sending president xi to
12:11 am
the un this week but they are sending the 2nd highest person they could which is their state council and foreign minister huang ye then of course there's the u.s. will president trump will be in new york at the time of the climate summit he is not attending he's attending his own event on religious minorities so who will represent the u.s. at the climate summit along with merkel and micro modi and others well in the u.s. system they often say the longer the title the more junior you are i can tell you the u.s. delegation is being headed by the principal deputy assistant secretary of state for oceans and international environment and scientific fairs i'd never heard of before marcy or burn a cat tame favored diplomatic editor at the united nations in new york we're bringing bringing you developments from the u.n. or week to if they want a fair amount of their thanks james. well as we mentioned the u.n. event follows massive climate change protests led by young people organizers had
12:12 am
4000000 people of all ages took part in the world wide call for action from new york i reports. the young people are fed up and took to the streets of new york to say it's time for adults i don't need to acknowledge climate change but instead to do something about it you're only 17 years old why is it important for you to be here today this will be movement is you sledding we're the ones who are going to be affected the most by climate change because be at the longest time ahead of us and we're the ones you by traditional means don't have much political power actions like this show that we have a voice in our futures here i've written 0 hour in red lipstick oh it means that this is really like 0 hour like no more time left to act on climate change because people around the world are already being affected they are taking their message straight to older people in positions of power like it this climate strike in
12:13 am
washington d.c. but in america new york is the focal point on thursday a giant melting glacier was projected on the side of the united nations headquarters as well as words scroll down the side demanding action on climate change world leaders are gathering at the u.n. next week for the annual general assembly. but it was the noise on the streets friday meant to make those world leaders take notice easily hundreds of thousands of people demonstrating through the streets of new york city right now mostly young people this is happening in over a 1000 different cities throughout the united states but not only here locally as well. across the pacific islands many of which are already experiencing the impact of rising sea levels a pledge to fight climate change there are protests in australia were several $100000.00 people skipped school college or work to take part and in india more

demonstrations and a groundswell of global existent passion for action also seen in south africa. all told demonstrations in more than 150 countries. even experienced activists say they are learning from the youth i have to say they can communicate much better that maybe a 1st day of creativity innovation and the way it dies the numbers of young people that are coming every country will be. the last 6 months. they're now saying it's no longer a matter of trying to bring attention to climate change but rather what to do about it gabriel is on to. new york. our new environmental show planet s.o.s. begins here within hours on al-jazeera at 730 g.m.t. this saturday now to island nations have cut diplomatic ties with taiwan in favor

12:19 am
is taking place right now in new york it was opened by 16 year old swedish campaign and pressure turned bag was inspired a day of global environmental protests led by young people on friday. now a day after those global protests volunteers are helping tided the streets for well to clean up day for them costello who joined community groups in turkey who are trying to make a difference. this school for full interests are gathered in istanbul for the world clean out say their aim is to clean streets so fall out of the streets in istanbul old town they have brought mainly children among them today because they want to educate them for their future to save their future and teach them how to clean them garbage in a city is that they are living good creating a sense of personal responsibility of taking care of your own spaces and your own neighborhoods is really fundamental to making a change all over the world if everyone takes care of their own space we wouldn't
12:20 am
have this problem if people took care of their own beaches if they took care of their own neighborhoods in their own cities who would be doing a lot better so getting the children and gauged in keeping their own neighborhood clean is really important but yesterday there was a bit because i'm it strike that the jews in believing and as adults i feel as an adult i feel that is and a shave that i made this was such a terrible place that knowledge is and have to carry this burden each citizen and istanbul generates at least one kilogram of ways per day and it's mannix around 20 tons of waste per day in istanbul and $90000000.00 tons of waste at forster's in general which is a huge number and according to official figures there is a problem here because 2 thirds of the ways for us it's generated by the furthest fearful is mismanaged which means it is not through sorry fold or acclimated or kept in the way of houses properly and listens bad forward our friend and my mentor
12:21 am
the experts say which raises a crucial and for the future and also thinking that turkey has become the set the marja splats 6 and weighs in for terry for only do you hate and this is also raising concerns of on the public because since 2 thirds of the west has mismanaged all are they going to manage it the noise from other countries in all of this is a question being asked by many interested. well for more on all of this we are now joined by timothy now decided he's a climate change activist from fiji he's at the united nations in new york now timothy i know you've traveled a long way to be in new york today tell us what your message is to the leaders that . my message to the world it is is that i one fear 2. i want them to know that climate change is real and it is like a few in the night it will not only steal but cures and destroy us and also our one
12:22 am
who will lead is to please hear more from the young generations because we will be one day if each of tomorrow indeed but timothy i know you're from fiji and you had to deal with syco and winston that took place back in 2016 and i remember seeing the devastation myself can you tell us how fiji and other pacific islands are coping with climate change that we're already seeing. the pacific island nations or fiji after the constant the trying to rebuild again they're trying to continue with their farming and. they're trying to replant and also. people who have lost their. houses they're trying to rebuild and houses are not repaired yet.
12:23 am
my in my village in my community and if the village. was poor it has it has not been repaired by now but i think the government were to their best in. promoting a better place for our country and timothy i believe that you've met the u.n. secretary general mr antonio terrorist several times do you think that world leaders will do what they need to do to try to address this climate crisis. i hope so because i hope that through will it is to actions against climate change and i hope that through walk the talk and i hope to hear more from. the young generations from us and also i hope that.
12:24 am
there will be a change and they will work together in promoting a bit. planets for our future generation timothy analysis a climate change activist from fiji thank you for joining us on al-jazeera timothy i wish you all the best with sharing your methods. now the u.s. president is describing the latest allegations of his abuse of power as a political hack job donald trump is being accused of asking the president of ukraine to obtain damaging information about his potential rival in the race for reelection former vice president joe biden now here's our white house correspondent . a state visit between the leaders of the united states and australia overshadowed by questions of political impropriety by u.s. president donald trump i've had conversations with many leaders that are always appropriate for the oval office trump defended and downplayed the allegations he

john lennon the attacks on post is calling for political reform raises fears offend the conflict between rival groups but our correspondent scott highlight is in hong kong from which he joins us live scott i believe you outside a more way of protest as did try to gather today talk us through what's happening right now. you know right now what we're seeing whereby that m.t.r. the train system here in hong kong that station 2 months ago that saw that attack on protesters another civilians injuring more than 40 and that's something that's really been kind of a rallying cry for the protesters so they came here to mark at this m.t.r. station that's just up the street came here to mark 2 months since that incident now the police locks down the m.t.r. station so what happened is the protesters about a 1000 of them had to go into a mall adjacent to that train station and what has happened since then 2 hours since they were kicked out of the mall they're going to streamed out onto the
12:32 am
streets and you can see there's still a large gathering out here now i know what's kind of interesting we've seen this with some of these protests around hong kong once they are kicked out or once they have a confrontation with the police and disperse sometimes there are local residents that tangle with the protesters because you can imagine look at this this is someone's neighborhood these are shops here and we're hearing in the last 45 minutes there's been a little bit of discussions heated discussions between the shop owners here and the protesters who came out of the mall so that's kind of what we're seeing here we know that some tear gas was fired by the riot police in the last hour they have since we have just come up to this position here and since we've been here the police were lined up behind us they have left so right now i guess they're letting the local residents and the protesters sort this out on their own they get them to our station is back behind us and that's where the the sit in was supposed to take place some several hours ago and scott what you are talking about is just one of several events that took place today. what else happened across hong kong.
12:33 am
you know what we also saw this is one of them this is kind of the later day event that was taking place earlier in the day prove beijing supporters did something that they called clean hong kong day but what they did is they went to around the city there are many locations called lenin walls and this is where these protesters have put up posters anti-government hong kong government and then like china protesters these pro. people went out to clean it up there are no confrontations there were the protests were pretty much the. way. there was another or even. going to the board for the road you know a lot of arguing coming on honking their horns to do so much to these protests kind of break up so we had that event of the cli on kong day and then later in the day we saw another protest that was actually sanctioned by the police that was allowed to happen there was a bit of
12:34 am
a clash between riot police and the protesters because they wanted to continue past the deadline that they were given a little bit of a clash there and then they dispersed and a lot of those protesters came over to what we've seen here in the last couple of hours. on the streets of hong kong where things are getting pretty rowdy it seems thank you for that update scott will be speaking to throughout the night. well security forces in iraq have to tend to suspect following friday's bomb attack on a minibus 12 people were killed and 5 injured as an army checkpoint. the city's been the center of muslim rituals during the assura hot holiday and police have who stood right side security that. now the cost of living in france has provoked the latest yellow vest protests there more than $100.00 arrests have been made in paris police fired tear gas at protesters who smashed windows and burned a barricade 7 and a half 1000 police have been mobilized to contain the protests centered on the famous. now u.s.
