once and what we've done is take a water bottle just like this in front of its journey after it's been lubin to see exactly what happens. when. the world is addicted to plastic. it was sold to us as the product of the future product like. this educational video from the 1940 s. celebrates the convenience of plastic airlie on our. wedding our comfort. back then it was a symbol of the modern times to come 6 decades later the reality is. the earth is choking on it. according to the united states environmental protection agency only 9 percent of plastic is making its way into the recycling stream that's a people problem as they try it on the streets or troy in the ocean or
11:25 pm
unfortunately that's a habit that has to be stopped it's our addiction to single use plastic for fast food storage and packaging community. that's at the root of the problem we're guilty of and we should just admit it dr stephen not is a professor of materials science at u.s.c. he studies the physics and chemistry of materials like plastic seems to have been a material that was developed for convenience but we're now you know almost 100 years later paying the price if you look at the population as a whole probably a majority have not yet realized the magnitude of the problem. and nothing symbolizes the problem like the omnipresent plastic water bottle americans consume water from about 50000000000 bottles a year. made from last cold p t polyethylene turf late 2 monomers ethylene glycol and purify tariff
11:26 pm
acid combine to create a polymer resulting in a lightweight strong material why then does it last all my stuff to infinity and the landfill this essentially are the same type of bonds that hold together diamond if you're conscientious enough to throw a water bottle into a blue recycle bin like we do here at techno and you probably think that water bottle is going to be turned into another water bottle but that may not necessarily be the case techno wants to find out what happens next so we followed the water bottle. this is the massive 20 facility near los angeles california. located near a large metropolis it can take a lot of trash. if you take a football field from post to post 10 feet high. fill it up with trash about
11:27 pm
a 3rd of that water that comes over here every day. $3000.00 tons a day this facility of is a glimpse into the wilds of single stream recycling because all of the recycled material it receives comes from a single source been like this convenient because all recyclables end up in one basket but there's a price you can't unscramble an egg susan collins is a manufacturing engineer who heads up a nonprofit recycling institute once materials get mixed together too much like glass shards ending up in paper. or plastic bottles ending up in the paper stream or a limit on cans ending up in the plastic stream all of that is detrimental to recycling sorting seems to be a massive component there are multiple compositions of plastic when these different
11:28 pm
plastics are blended together then the recycling become difficult to impossible that's exactly what's happening at the plenty of times that means of those who won't be turned back into another bottle but instead it will go on another journey into the secondary plastic market one of the myths is that once you place the water possible in a blue recycle bin it can actually be made back into water bottle again the technology is that why isn't it being done more you know i can't really speak to the industry of what happens after you know the water bottle leaves our facility we just make sure that the containers that come in here are recovered as much as possible so you don't know what happens to the plastic that you recover once you've given it to the break up both you know but from what we understand that there is a local market for the. for the most part lot of the material is shipped overseas
11:29 pm
mostly to be asian pacific in 2014 the 2nd cheap plastic market sent about hoffa's of california's plastic trash to china because it's a mix of all the different types of plastics it can only be melted down repurposed a process known as down cycling it could be t. shirts it could be teddy bear stuffing it could be carpets. because down cycle products and. they just take a longer trip before they eventually end up in a landfill and there's another inherent problem with single stream recycling half of the country has access to recycling and the other half might have a drop off program that might be nearby or it might be 10 or 20 miles away in. u.s. were able to lose about 5 to 7 percent recycled content and beverage bottles in the united states the number in germany is 25 to 35 percent in the u.s. bills. california is only one of 6 states that places a redemption value on non-carbonated p.t.t.

capacity more than 15000000 cubic yards. playfellows and that is stuck in his expression oh well i want to move out of this area americans create about 250000000 tons of trash a year. in 1988 there were about 8000 landfills in america 2 decades later that number dropped to below 2000 spurred on by environmental and health concerns heavily populated areas started closing landfills and shipping trash to more remote regions. san francisco hauls its trash about 50 miles across the bay to york city trash is trucked out of state to new jersey pennsylvania even as far away as ohio virginia and south carolina and until recently america was doing a brisk business selling its crap to china but now even china is leery times of changed awareness of the public is much greater about health issues now than it was
11:36 pm
when newby began newbie is one of the largest active landfills on the shores of san francisco bay i think it's more like this in america the city of milpitas filed a lawsuit against san jose over environmental impacts caused by the landfill. the bay area air quality management district which has received 2000 new b. landfill order complaints has issued newbie island 5 public nuisance violations related to odor issues according to a district spokesman they're still negotiating the fines. trash is a big business and an unfortunate smelly business too don let's field is the northern california environmental manager for public services the community itself seems to have some concerns about this site and the odor problem that they're experiencing unfortunately we've been a little slow to address those concerns and we'd like to apologize to the community for that here at the landfill we've had the order mitigation plan that we've been working on for years we get
11:37 pm
a lot of fresh refuse that comes in every day and we have order misting stations set up in strategic locations throughout the landfill that can mitigate some of the fresh orders. in addition the public says it invested heavily in the state of the art recycling facility to help divert landfill list. all of the mature that we accept over a 1000 tons a day in the bay area of california comes into this facility and we diverted from the landfill so we've processed the material and removed everything that's recycled over. 200000 tons a year are being diverted from the landfill are all 4400 tons of paper and 30 tons of plastic 90 tons of the last 30 tons of metal every day despite diverting nearly 50 percent of their annual beats the landfill is still growing and that causes some to look toward another possible solution. in sweden a country that boasts $33.00 incinerators trash is burned to create fuel and what's
11:38 pm
known as waste to energy about half of their waste is recycled and the rest is pern less than one percent goes to landfill sweden is known as a world leader in waste to energy incinerators like this one which utilizes modern technology to capture and control emissions san francisco authorities tell us they have no plans to build an incinerator in the bay area instead they say they plan to increase composting and to continue to ban what they call bad designs. what is your hope for san francisco what we're trying to do is really break that addiction to pasta quater san francisco is the 1st city in the country to ban the single use water bottle from city property in the case of our ban on single use plastic water bottles the goal here is to establish a marker laid down in san francisco to work with other cities to do the same in the meantime however we are still a consumer and dumped nation republic landfill manager augustine marino says he

wants to residents know just one thing. ringback as the one that works in trash for a living and you hear the concerns of the citizens and yes what you have to say to them this is not a dog you know you hear that were very often and for us you know that that we work here every day it's not fair to call this a dog this is a mother and son it died down feels we take pride in what we do here these residents say they just wish they were doing it somewhere else so this is not a day i'm just waiting for my vehicle and i'm fighting for a day and. nobody's going to get is going to be the. mountains of trash piled high as the eye can see at this landfill just outside san francisco but inside this mass scientists the potential for some of this waste is organic about 40 percent of landfill waste nationwide is from food that's waste that doesn't have to be there innovators are tackling that waste a program that takes food from restaurants and farms in the area turns that waste
11:40 pm
into energy and we're finding new ways are what we used to call we are right now in my 90 percent. waste recycling composting gabrielle is on owens a small cafe in san francisco's mission district she composts everything i'm a strong believer that i'm doing what i can and that is that i can what she's doing here on a small scale is part of a much bigger picture and if you look at what she's doing here and turn. so diverting waste away from landfills and creating a recycling type of circuit here with everything that happens and that's what we have to look to inspired by western europe san francisco opera owners like this on our financial incentives to compost. a lot of these small businesses are actually doing it for economic reasons it lowers their bill for recycling for their garbage but overall money is a way to motivate people but it's not the only motivator when the food waste is in
11:41 pm
the landfill it decomposes and in generates methane gas and methane is a very potent greenhouse gas john hankey the civil engineer who runs the resource we could reprogram the east bank with a combined solid food waste really quickly swatting to create fuel that has no air now carry organic yes that's the term we use to describe this it's like a black gold. and. the process works like this food waste from throughout the bay area is trucked here to the east bay municipal utility district a mud the sewage treatment plant and a pioneer of green power for the 1st plant and north america to be commentor genius you all and ultimately energy confidantes. when we started the truck we've got a grammy if out 40 percent of the energy we needed to run the plants and that's pretty typical her away from her treatment plant today were at 130 percent of our

to be and not allow that this. whole energy to do that or to vote on our neighbors next to ours. and what actually happened there we're standing by at that label of good life that he did sludge is going into an animal that dies just a digester is like a human stomach so organic material goes into the digester and in there it's bio degraded by. cherry and they feed the solid material and that solid material is being converted into bio gas. and bio dad is a great renewable energy source and it's a fuel that we use to run our engines and turbaned to generate electricity let me get this straight i think i'm sure there and i think the energy in the fuel that i can from that and that it goes in there and you know collect that 'd you're getting at the bacteria that they're turning out and the energy that's correct each
11:43 pm
digester here is about 2000000 gallons and we have 11 of them so that's 22000000 gallons of capacity east a mug shared the technology and now other water treatment facilities in brooklyn new york and in california cities of marin 1000 oaks fresno and san diego are using it for. most of us don't think about the waste whether it's flushing the toilet or throwing things in the garbage it just kind of disappears and i think as a society we've been very successful at sort of hiding where the waste go and i think as time goes on and the population grows and waste generation grows they will become more aware of waste generation that's a great responsibility not to me if such a big impact and they are in the world for the next generation.

so through all of this it's clear there is a problem out there with recycling with way too much pressure what can we do is consumers well and some people think it's an individual choice we just need to get better at sorting our trash and sorting our recyclables and actually following through and others think that we need to be taking a legislative approach and in san francisco if ban water bottles and government property and maybe we can do more things like that when i work in latin america glass bottles or the norm there that is what you use whenever you get a soda from a. restaurant or something but the difference there is you are expected to return that glass bottle to the person and they recycle it was a times they'll give you a quarter in return but if you don't return that glass bottle you're being very rude it's like a societal norm that you are breaking i think as consumers we need to be extremely mindful of not using plastic ones so just try and increase the times piece of packaging and then just make sure that you trash in a bleep in once you finish with it when it comes to responsible use i mean also you
11:45 pm
think about whether or not you're putting it in the blue bin at all i mean a lot of people just have this idea what i'm going to throw it in the trash and throw it in this bin and whatever it is it's going to disappear into the ether and now i'm absolved of all responsibility but it has to go somewhere i mean conservation of mass if nothing else really did make me more aware of how much plastic i'm actually using when i use a plastic straw or plastic cups only those things we just because it seems like there's so many of them we just use them once and throw more in that's the absolute is nothing like standing at the open face of a landfill and going through your head of like why i threw away that yogurt container and that i had a water bottle this morning in my cups probably in there and you really start to realize how much of this waste you generate and day i'm sure you could see it and you could smell it yes doesn't it certainly a dirty job but an important one to tell so thank you for bringing that to us that's it for now be sure to check in so next time right here on technology dive deep into these stories go behind the scenes at al-jazeera dot com slash techno.

a key syrian border town pushing out kurdish fighters from the area also in the news millions across tokyo were told to brace for the onslaught of japan's typhoon haiyan it's finally makes landfall. on final rallies held in as mozambicans get ready for next week's general election. and in sport alley and keep chugging takes a giant leap forward for athletics the kenyan running the 1st ever saw our mouth and beating the barrier point 20 seconds or. so turkish forces and their rebel allies have seized control of a key syrian cities town center it follows 4 days of intense fighting with kurdish forces in basra line but advances on the ground of meant a setback in relations with some countries especially the united states and iran
11:50 pm
which had urged turkey to pull out its troops is now offering to mediate between turkey and the kurds we start with this report from on the turkish syrian border. they are battling their way into kurdish controlled towns along syria side of the border with turkey it hasn't been an easy fight for several days turkish troops and their allies the opposition syrian national army have pushed into the northeastern corner of syria they now say they are in control of one of 2 main towns along the 120 kilometer stretch of territory they plan to capture in the 1st phase of this operation cross the line has fallen they've also advance 30 kilometers deep reaching the highway that connects to west and east syria effectively dividing the territory under the control of the. positions of the kurdish led syrian democratic forces are coming under heavy fire but an incident close to a u.s. outpost along the border has added to tensions between turkey and the united states
11:51 pm
which said its forces were close to being hit by turkish artillery fire turkey's defense minister has a car denies his troops targeted the position saying they were responding to fire 1000 meters away the new front in syria's war is worsening relations between the nato allies which have long been strained the pentagon was more blunt calling them damaged international pressure is mounting on turkey to stop the advance the united states is threatening to impose economic sanctions the message from here is clear we will not stop the operation president russia or the god made it clear the wife the syrian kurdish armed group that forms the backbone of the us they must 1st withdraw 30 kilometers from the border with turkey. the humanitarian impact of the conflict is being felt on both sides turkish civilians are being killed in rocket fire that's being fired into border towns but i. don't have any protection but
11:52 pm
we're not thinking about moving out now since we have a life here we don't want to leave our home in syria they have also been casualties among civilians caught in the conflict aid groups are warning of another humanitarian disaster in syria's 8 year war the area is home to people who've already suffered violence and displacement the united nations says 100000 are on the move and this battle has just started the number of those affected may rise fast. on the turkey syria border. that's just elaborate on the international side of things we've got rosalynn jordan in washington d.c. now rosalynn i can't really are saying that there's been some setbacks in relations with countries including the united states can you define that for us a little. well that is significant because the u.s. and turkey are both members of nato but that's not preventing both congress and the president from threatening sanctions against iran if this military offensive isn't
11:53 pm
stopped quickly as well as if the turks do not use any care in trying to avoid civilian casualties and then of course there's this new wrinkle which has developed to which are alluded to in her story which is the report that there was artillery fire that happened very close to where u.s. special forces were stationed in northeastern syria on friday we've received a statement from the u.s. military saying that they still consider this military invasion a bad idea that the turks should not be working outside of what they're calling a security mechanisms zone and they are also why implying that u.s. forces could respond to protect themselves if this sort of thing were to happen again let me read the precise language the u.s. is demanding that turkey avoid actions that could result in immediate defensive
11:54 pm
action that's not the kind of thing you want to hear from a treaty ally but the u.s. military in particular is very concerned about not just the conduct of the turkish invasion but also very concerned about the potential for isis forces to try to reconstitute this is in an area which the s.d.f. and u.s. forces supporting them had reclaimed the territory after some 4 years of a so-called caliphate being set up by isis so fun and interesting rosalynn and unfortunate we often get contradictions between various news departments and the white house but all about getting out of quote unquote endless wars and i think he even said to the cameras we've got no soldiers in syria and here you've office you know confirmation that there are u.s. troops there and could even engage if needs be. that's right i mean it's you know the contradictions between the white house and other parts of the
11:55 pm
executive branch of the u.s. government have gone back right to the very beginning of donald trump's presidency but in this case the military is looking at not what is politically expedient because donald trump had campaigned on pulling u.s. forces out of the middle east and out of getting out of what he called unnecessary wars the u.s. military is looking at the fact that it has about a 1000 or so special forces troops inside syria to help the s.d.f. try to keep isis from reclaiming territory anywhere inside syria and so they have 1st their obligation to protect their troops it's rather you know it's rather blunt shall we say for the military to be this open about what it sees as happening between the turkish military and s.d.f. forces but in this case their primary obligation is to make certain that u.s.
11:56 pm
forces aren't drawn into a conflict where they had no business being ok thank you for all of that rosalynn jordan's in washington d.c. so what we want to look at now is the issue of the actual conflict we're now 4 days in what sort of shape might it take with the turkish forces in northern syria is with us to talk about that an assistant professor at the university of nottingham but also former senior officer in the british armed forces so thank you for your time professor what i see of the turkish incursion so far is that president on is in no mood to listen to anyone else is he and it seems that this is one of those operations which will just press forward and forward until the to say we have done and we won't be influenced by others is that a fair raid on it. i think it is certainly based on what we're receiving in terms of public rhetoric from both turkey and the us but i think that it would be a little bit simplistic to not acknowledge the fact that this is political rhetoric
11:57 pm
and almost certainly there has been. a degree of understanding between president trump and president the gun about what should happen and what should not happen so i would hope that that understanding remains clear in both and the greed in both individuals mind as long as that understanding of the taint the public rhetoric may go one way or another hopefully this. present crisis won't become a catastrophe the turkish forces themselves are national army of course presumably very strong and well equipped are they likely to encounter. the sort of resistance which they can't deal with. i don't know whether they are going to not be able to deal with the resistance but they may well end up paying a price that's happier than they planned the the contains primarily the why p.g.
11:58 pm
the way p.g. as many people will tell you is essentially part of the p.k. k. and the p.k. k. has been waging for many decades on and off an insurgency within turkey itself which the army has fought but it is one that the army has not been able to fully extend wish and so based on that i think what we will find is that. the turkish army military will be able to have tentative control over most of the territory but they will be harassment. and insurgent or terrorist action within the territory that they will have to deal with continually. this is kind of one of those how long is a piece of string questions but i'm going to ask it anyway what are your feelings on how long this could potentially go on is it a short sharp operation which the turks can deal with and get over and done with and get back into turkey or are we looking at something more prolonged. i think
11:59 pm
it's going to be reasonably prolonged the initial phase will depend very much on how much of the resistance that the. the s.d.f. is likely to put up remember of course this is not a 2 way conflict there is. behalf of turkey an organization called the syrian national army that basically turkey's proxy as opposed to the us proxy which is the s.d.f. and so we've got a conflict going on between 2 organizations that are very difficult to control because they're not national actors nevertheless i think that turkey has the capability to bring this relatively narrow strip of land under its control in a matter of weeks or months but in the longer term it will need to consider very seriously the offers being made certainly by iran and possibly by russia to come to some form of a longer term agreement and i think turkey would be wise to achieve that agreement
12:00 am
using those 2 interlocutors with the syrian government so that the problem with maintaining security the problem in taining borders will fall to the syrian army does allowing turkey to declare mission accomplished and return its army to its own territory which is something that i know that the army and the turkish government probably want to do in the long term anyway. ashraf always interesting and informative speaking to you thank you for your time where protests against the turkish military offensive a taking place in several cities around the world smith spoke to some demonstrators in erbil which is iraq's semi autonomous kurdish region little love lost here between the kurds in this part of northern iraq kurdish controlled part of northern iraq and the turkish authorities the crowd has been.
