now here's something that hasn't been widely reported but it has consequences for all of us the cost of shipping crude around the world has shot up to 11 year highs after the united states blacklisted chinese ships more than 40 v.l. cc's or very large crude carriers operated by china's cosco shipping energy transportation have been blacklisted for moving sanctioned iranian oil cosco has a total of $1100.00 ships iran's oil tankers estimated to be around 54 of also been sanctions in total nearly $300.00 tankers have been black with listed including venezuela's that represents about 3 percent of the world's oil tanker fleet according to refer it if i call him that said the cost of hiring a ship from $18000.00 to almost $300000.00 a day to ship crude from the u.s. gulf to asia the longest routes to ship oil now costs around $14000000.00
7:33 am
add to that sanctions countries a still managing to get crude to customers by offloading at sea and switching off tracking devices who better to pick all this up with than rajat kapoor managing director of oil and gas at a.w.i. lloyd thanks for being with us roger so what needs to happen to bring tanker prices down should we be concerned here who's shouldering the cost. obviously a big effect on the tanker prices and the way it is and where they are today has got to do with the current sanctions that the u.s. administration has put on iranian crude in order to prevent offloading often include in the high seas in order to stop at least do it to the bare minimum export of group to china the u.s. as you know last month inboard the sanctions on the tanker subsidiaries of costco which is china's shipping line and in the largest shipping line in the world so once you have the sanctions coming in from the u.s. on these entities on these particular. because they suddenly become hot cakes
7:34 am
nobody wants to touch these tankers and this these williams are then taken out the international treat and that's that's that's a substantial piece of hardware that goes out and obviously supply to. the place or shoot up we've also got to laze that it's not just the china connection there are there are other aspects to the increase in tanker trade as well as you know the venezuelan sanctions are also in place similar to a union crew doing venezuelan goold are all sort of under the lens of that put away another piece of get out of circulation and as you know that i am more 2020 said to kick in in the next 3 months which basically means that the ships need to adhere to or rather stricter level of pollution control so a good number of ships have actually in the box and they're going in blob grid scrubbers and things like that so all these things things put together is what is currently impacting the rise in the tank afflicts is that cost or that increase in
7:35 am
cost being passed on to the likes of you and i obviously the crude transporter or are those that are finer that is taking the crude once he's got to pay an additional cost to ship his crude he's going to mark his products the final end product that comes out of the refinery the gasoline the petrol the l.p.g. at a higher cost which you and i have to pay unfortunately iran has always said that it has the means to get oil on the market in spite of the sanctions there is a lot of sanctions busting going on here how is that happening. you're going to realize i mean even if you look back 304050 years in in history the informal trade. the informal crude sales whether it was a barter system or totally off market sale of crude has always existed in iran from the times of the shah in the seventy's when iran was producing at its peak at about
7:36 am
$6000000.00 barrels of crude there were always barrels that were available off the coast of iran north of the coastline of the arabian gulf states where crew was sold informally of course that was and that has continued to list a i mean if you were to stand on any any one of the gulf states along the coastline and with a high powered by knockers you you could even today see these small barges having 203040000 barrels of crude which was obviously iranian in origin and it was being sold at high seas so iran has always found a way to get its crude to sell its crude our way from the eyes of the formal market as it were of course this this crude was either pull forward was either. siphoned off given the seepage is in the iran supply chain but now what we're seeing is a surface if not sponsored state sanctioned sale of iranian crude.
7:37 am
from the prying eyes of the west this happening by means of high seas. things like that help me understand this then then the sanctions are concerned iran is still able to trade with any anyone who wants terms of oil it's just that the payment can't be in dollars is that how the sanctions work so it's ok for them to come offshore and offload from one tanker to another as long as the payment is due in dollars the most kind of strange and aspect of the sanctions that game in early early last year was section 1245 of the n d 8 the national defense authorization act which actually imposes penalties on financial institutions which are in any way connected with it in united including that includes banks financial institutions lenders and government treasuries as well so white iran has the coup and whilst there is
7:38 am
a huge appetite at least amongst consumers to take that group very few people are reluctant to get that crude into their refined into their inventor is undefined reason because it's difficult before that how do people get on for the longest time never accepted dollars that they had benchmark in yours of for the longest time any even when the sanctions were not there and i.o.c. and i.d.c. always dealt in your 'd daughters today even that is difficult iran is did a selling it's good it's down from 3 and a half 1000000 barrels for millions battles a day it was about 3000000 barrels a day earlier this year even today by most estimates they are still selling pour 100000 odd buttons of everyday. a lot about is is money that is it out there away from international banking tons some amount of it is done in barter system. white boards i pads. i phones washing machine the likes and it is
7:39 am
a good amount of good that is currently being stored on credit by the iranian government in the hope that when the sanctions go they'll be able to engage that iou fascinating project many thanks david being with us regards to your own counting the cost thank you agent good to be there for years the u.s. has complained that the e.u. has illegally subsidized airbus putting the american plane manufacturer boeing at a financial disadvantage now the world trade organization agrees and it says the u.s. can impose $7500000000.00 in tariffs on a wide range of european products in response to those tariffs which have just kicked in at a drop in all of oil prices a putting spain's all of industry under enormous pressure now to 0 looks at the repercussions of those tariffs on the families that the penned on all of oil exports for their livelihood. harvest time in spain should be
7:40 am
a time for celebration on of this year it's a time of anxiety as they shake down the trees the u.s. is imposing a new 25 percent import tax on that olive oil tax to decimate this 5th generation family business unable to compete with cheap imports. given enough. the vessels that are carrying spanish olive oil to the states haven't even reached their destination so what's going to happen they were sold before these tariffs were a threat so pushing a 25 percent margin on top of this will kill our competitiveness. spain is the world's largest producer of all of oil exports to the us a worth $440000000.00 but those working in the fields have not had it easy lately last year's record harvest caused all of oil's purchase price to plummet by 34 percent and more and more countries are planting their own articles joining the market piling the tariffs on top of this could lead to collapse i
7:41 am
i last week thousands of out of workers took to the streets of madrid demanding the e.u. push back on the new terrace and prop up the industry and say they don't understand why nick grimm and the politicians had with us should penalize their products. we think it's very unfair because the agricultural sector acts like a monetary exchange for other industries that have nothing to do with the sector in this case is the aeronautical industry which has nothing to do with us what other producers are already feeling the squeeze around $845000000.00 worth of spain's agricultural exports will face us tariffs the e.u. warns it will retaliate with its own import taxes if they win that parallel case against the u.s. next year it will have the makings of a texas trade war. fish farmers in northern malaysia calling on the government to tackle the issue of marine pollution they say the poor quality of seawater of

course the huge financial losses al-jazeera florus louis reports the state of. there have been fish farms here at the mouth of the korean river in penang northern malaysia for more than 40 years but owners say the quality of the seawater is degrading and they believe that is causing their fish to die and they blame a nearby landfill for polluting the water. we depend on the sea for living if all fish can survive we are going to have to shut down the farm if there's no fish in the waters will be out of job its role on the northern shores of penang island. says his caged fish have been dying as well he too blames the water quality the state government says the polluting of sea water may
7:43 am
be caused by runoff from an illegal quarry operated by marine research as say the increase in jellyfish off the coast of penang is an indicator that the sea water is becoming more polluted but say their studies suggest that that's not enough to cause fish to die as the same thing is difficult for us to actually pinpoint on one factor ocean is a very dynamic environment. is the ball and. affects as well as. the climate change that causes course the pollution. it's not just those in the fishing and aquaculture industries who are affected. freighters as well as hoteliers tell us that on some days the pollution from this river is so bad that a foul smell hangs in the air and the water turns into a dark almost black color on those days they tell customers to avoid swimming in the sea. the local government says residents have to do their part and if so cross

7:45 am
a lifelong dream has stalled now we wait for the prices to go down. bangladesh relies on importing scrap metal from the u.s. to make steel rod which are the backbone of the new buildings but that become more expensive to build because they import costs have risen. president trans trade war with china is impacting bangladesh a still industry which imports a significant amount of scrap iron from the united states protectionist measures taken by the us administration is reducing supply and increasing prices and so the cost of constructions have gone up in bangor that the capital dhaka is the heart of the still drug market still traders say business is bad and on accomplished i'm a little bit like yes there's an impact with sol's almost coming to a halt people who are planning to build a home a very cautious now as i have to pour in money while the market is volatile. some

still traders are stockpiling stocks betting prices will rise when or if the trade war eventually ends yes the price is changed. why are writing more on speculation and when it went up sharply president trams tariffs are costing poorer countries as well his own and china there's been a construction boom in bangladesh over the past 20 years or so but the high price of construction materials such as steel are threatening to start a recent economic growth. show for this week if you'd like to comment on anything you've seen. you can tweet me i'm at a finnigan on twitter please use the hash tag a j c t c when you do or you can drop us a line counting the cost of al-jazeera dot net is our e-mail address as always there's more for you on line at al-jazeera dot com slash c.t.c. that takes you straight to a page a day you'll find individual reports links even and tire episodes for you as

gas and water cannon to try to disperse the crowds the army has said that it will from now on come down harder on the protesters that it doesn't want to see these kinds of scenes of destruction on the streets but everyone we've been speaking to say that they will continue to come out to protest that they are fed up of years of empty promises by the politicians and they want change gears of a crippling economic crisis has left many lebanese struggling to make ends meet it's been made worse by political upheaval and the arrival of one and a half 1000000 syrian refugees who fled the war lebanon as the 3rd largest debt in the world the government is trying to secure $11000000000.00 in aid banks russian foreign currency last month. the state of economic emergency was declared the latest protest was triggered on thursday when the government announced plans to charge people for using the whatsapp messaging service that was the tipping point for population for straighted by a growing cost of living what many call

a dysfunctional state the mass turnout forced the government to drop the tax plan but it hit a nerve resulting in nationwide protests. prime ministers psagot had to be cancelled friday's cabinet meeting and says his efforts to bring in much needed reforms have been repeatedly blocked by others in government no one is taking responsibility here but i'm giving our partners in the government a very short deadline 72 hours to give us a solution that can convince us and the people in the streets and our international partners but there is little trust left in the political elite who has run this country for decades people are hungry people are struggling people are tired everyone says these protests are unprecedented and they are determined to continue stephanie decker al-jazeera beirut. well let's get more on this we're joined now by robert rubin a professor of political science at florida atlanta university and he's joining us

live from and very good to have you with us on there as we follow what's happening in lebanon the country has had serious challenges for many years so what do you think it is that really has united people in a way that we haven't seen inside along you know was that the proposed whatsapp tax that was it just the straw that that really broke the camel's back here. yes well it has been building up for quite some time and the grievances against the government against corruption against unemployment it gained so many things just to blow up yesterday you know and i saw it coming myself i was 11 on an august and i could see you know people are not happy you have many people are hungry many people you know they need the job you have high unemployment and also as i look at the political leadership and they and they say it and they say openly now it's like a mafia like political leadership that look at the economy that look at the

political system as the spoils you know and every leader or every leader of his sect you know always they want to want to have his share or her share so deeply what we see is a popular social movement across extending on movements you know is that a significant and radical reform and mr b. how significant is that you know you talk about cross sectarian this is these are people from all the different religious sects who are out to get the not necessarily affiliated themselves with any of the political parties but playing the lebanese national anthem raising the lebanese flag everywhere you see. everywhere absolutely and as a matter of fact you have some leave that as they will do you know they are going to you know member to say this that he also and they told them listen we want all of the money has fled and this is what i see that now they are united in having it but i government and i bet our last low and it's enough is enough let's you know
7:55 am
the about me is i suffered and then i want to myself you're going to civil or in about these has suffered so much and you have if would also scientific through you have a confessional system but today what happened is that the problem now really they united them all so now it's not about political affiliation or it's not about confessional of 3 to a few years it's about the bread and butter and i what they committee and this is what's happening now is the streets and we've had you know a promise to haiti to respond to this giving from the politicians a 72 hour deadline to come up with a solution given so many of the country's problems that you know you talked about they have been around for decades and in pot have been caused by the same political elite that south had 80 is apostle of so can they be trusted to come up with a solution. well as well as a matter of fact they demonstrate that they are calling for the thought of the

resignation of the president the prime minister heidi and the speaker of the house i never saw myself even in the sound was in the city of tire you know people you know so many of whom calling for the resignation of betty so many the point is a forum that heidi is going to be calling for in 72 hours i don't think they're going to war and i'll tell you why because they are going to bring the same cabinet you know with some different you know he had and there is not going to war i think myself you need a technocrat government that does this then put on the political leadership and i believe that medical study many many talking to see should be in bed that is the system you know and corruption should be rooted out from the system as well. and how likely do you think that is because that is. a totally different system that we're talking about that you'll suggesting to what's been in place in lebanon. ever since it's since its foundation really but given the sort of protests that we're
7:57 am
seeing could they lead to real pressure to change the system ok my if you is someone very time aereo and cement with the lebanese system you can keep the confessional system but you want to allow the confessional leave that ends the system to choose whom they are going to employ is a system mainly you base that on medical crises if you have the matter that you will go ahead and have a job if you have a matter that you have a contract from the government you don't deal with the system as a place for spoils give me your share and take your shit give me your share and they could share is not going to war now also there has been some talk of changing the system making it more secular i think this is going to take time lebanon now is in a really is in a region where you have a lot of problems you know. and was and was what's happening and the reason so this is going to take time so best things to do now reform that you can do it also
7:58 am
before and i believe that and your government distance from the political leadership you know root corruption out and make. make contracts and of course i have i have to say some see some of the vital area for example and if there is city water telecommunication they are all in the hands of the political leaders yes why they should be contracted out the best there and reduce the taxes on the people so my point is you can create a decent government and still you maintained the confessional system and you and through us reform not cosmetically form and then overall now hopefully hopefully you know you are not going to go i don't like before and i'm going to say oh we are going to have somebody what i'm going to end up with was my thinker or mr bailey thank you very much for your time on this we do appreciate it that is right or how
